Mehso-so

At the turn of the 19th century, Iceland was a very poor country under Danish rule. Thurídur Einarsdòttir worked as a fishing deckhand from her teens, eventually became captain of her own crew (not her own boat), and managed a small leasehold farm. She had ups and downs, cared for various family members, and fought injustices against herself and others.

All that said, I didn‘t love this. Fascinating story, but maybe not a fascinating book.

Pickpick

This will probably be the last book I finish this year, and it‘s a good way to end it. This was a lot of fun and would honestly be an easy one for me to recommend to a lot of people. Complex characters? ✔️ Propulsive plot? ✔️ Interesting world building? ✔️ Vivid writing? ✔️ There‘s magic/fantasy but it‘s mainly a heist story. And there‘s romance but it‘s not the main plot. Found family, an anti-hero you can root for, diverse cast. Easily 4.5 stars

IriDas Best book ever. Glad you enjoyed it. It‘s my comfort read. What can I say, I have a weird life. 😂 12m
shortsarahrose @IriDas I can totally see how this would be a comfort read! 2m

The Mouse and His Child | Russell Hoban

Pickpick

The mouse and his child are clockwork windup toys joined at the hands. Purchased as Christmas toys by a family, they are eventually broken by the family cat (LOLOL the most real event in the book) and thrown away. This is where their adventure begins.

Themes of self determination, redemption, and community.

Some pop culture centered around New Year's. Loved this '72 version. I thought Gene Hackman was hot. 🤣

Champagne hits the deck;
New Year's cheers drown as lights die–
Time to climb the tree.

“…Pall claimed vaccinations were just a superstition. The only thing you needed to do when you got sick, he claimed, was to curse and suck it up. He apparently tried this on his death bed. It didn‘t work.”

Nice to know there are those among us stuck in a mentality already outdated in 1830s Iceland.
