This one has been staring at me for over a week, waiting for me to dive in for @AllDebooks #rereadtheclassics #buddyread (except it‘s a first-time read for me!)

I‘ve been trying to clear the decks a bit by finishing my current chunkster (The Agony and the Ecstasy), but tonight I decided I‘d better get started! I‘m going in. Wish me luck. 😁

TheBookgeekFrau Whoa, that's a really big book 😳 3w

Bklover I think you‘ll enjoy it! The Agony and the Ecstasy is a chunkster too, isn‘t it?! 3w
AllDebooks The agony and the ecstasy is on my list too x 3w
Saknicole Enjoy! I liked the book quite a bit but sometimes a good movie taints my expectations on plot as this one did. Have you seen the movie? Swoon, so good! 3w
BarbaraJean @Bklover So far I‘m parceling it out at 25-30 pages a day, but I enjoyed last night‘s reading so much I‘m sure I‘ll be reading ahead before long! Agony is indeed quite the chunksterβ€”660 pages in my edition! 3w
BarbaraJean @AllDebooks I‘m really enjoying The Agony and the Ecstasy! There are times that the writing feels a bit dated (written in the 1960s, I think), but it‘s fascinating and I keep having to put the book down to go look up pictures of his art as the narrative gets to the creation of each one! 3w
BarbaraJean @Saknicole I have seen the movie! So good! It‘s funny, because my husband tells me my issues with the plot of the movie should be addressed satisfactorily when I read the book πŸ˜† 3w

I‘m a lot behind but wanted to play! #wondrouswednesday Thanks @Eggs tagging me!

1) taggedβ€”my fave book last year. I still think about it every now and then
2) I have to love it without reservation to be a five-star book; books I really like get 4, books that are ok get 2-3. Really bad books get 1/2 star
3) Sometimes. I did a lot as a teen. Listening to some songs now still brings back thoughts of the books I read listening to the same song.

@Amiable Just started Volume 2! Luckily I am enjoying it.

Just wondering, can we change our books if we read a book that fulfils a category before we get to the planned one? #chunksterchallenge2023

swishandflick My favorite classic! I remember being in the sixth grade, and checking out an unabridged copy from my school library. I‘m calling it on the year‘s best book. There‘s no way I‘ll read better between now and year‘s end.

This is embarrassing though. I quit the brackets in August because I couldn‘t choose a favorite book in the first 8 months. But in hindsight, the cat took the lead by a hair. πŸ˜πŸˆβ€β¬› In the end, the Count beat them all.

So so many good books I read this year that didn‘t even make it into the #readingbracket2022

BarbaraBB Love your winner and that you read so many good African books! 3mo
Vansa There's so much discussion about "the canon" being irrelevant and so on,but I find that a lot of old classics are genuinely excellent, well written books with great character development. And by character development,I don't mean a privileged woman banging on about how she has " mental health" issues 3mo

This book is the ultimate revenge novel, but with a little of everything: romance, pirates, murder mystery, betrayal, adventure, travel. Dantes was thrown in a dungeon on trumped up charges & after escaping and becoming insanely wealthy, he seeks insidious revenge on the culprits who put him there. It was impossible for me not to cheer him on. My only frustration was how he β€œhelped” 2 lovers at the end; it was written to be a kindness but I ⬇️

Texreader took it as a cruelty. But I loved the end of Dantes‘ story. It was poignant. The book encompassed all my brain power and I couldn‘t read anything else at the same time. Too much going on and many surprises. Does anyone agree there seemed to even be a lesbian tryst in the book? The narrator was terrific. I doubt I‘d have finished it because of its somewhat dated writing style had I read the book. Listening to it was perfect. #chunksterchallenge 3mo

I really need to learn to stop reading my childhood favorites and just let them be. I didn't love this this time around. Too much going on and not in a good way but in a "meet the word count" way. I am sad.

To raise my spirits, I have included a pic of Henry Cavill from the CoMC film he was in. So young then. This is apparently one of the times that I prefer the movie over the book.

IndianBookworm It's interesting to know your perspective, even I liked it as a child. I wonder what would my opinion be now! 5mo

It‘s been a decade since I first read this & it was just as powerful the 2nd time around. The scenes with Dantes in prison remains some of my favorite from any book. I love his relationship w/the Abbe. The whole plot is an incredible example of patience & slow-burning revenge. There‘s a lag in the middle where the plot gets distracted, but other than that it‘s incredible start to finish. When it all comes together it‘s hard not to cheer out loud!

ravenlee I loved the Count! I felt for a while that all these subplots and seemingly random chapters were just peripheral, kind of milking the serialized story, but it all comes together! Hi Felix 😍 9mo

writerlibrarian One of my favourite Dumas and the trope is almost immortal. Revenge plots are rarely bad. 9mo

I have been on such a BUMMER kick of β€œblah” reads (sorry for all my β€œso-so” reviews πŸ˜•) that I just want to throw out a blurb and say I am loving this book. It‘s exciting! I actually don‘t know where it‘s going all the time, and it‘s exactly what I want out of a novel. πŸ˜„

LeahBergen It‘s such a great read! 10mo

#tarottakeover

Betrayal, heartbreak, isolation – Edmond Dantès experiences all of that (& more) in Le Comte de Monte-Cristo.
