This was my first Austen. I don't know what her other books are like, obviously, but I can say this romance doesn't support all the harsh criticism I've heard against Jane Austen as being fluffy or against romance in general. This book is hilarious. Miss Bates had me spitting out the tea I was not drinking. And how generous of Austen not to have Mrs. Elton fall face first into a pile of horse shit. Who says reading doesn't encourage empathy?

Sace I did a double take with the clever sticker placement 😂 4d
sprainedbrain Great review! I adore Jane Austen, and I think Emma is my least favorite book (still like it a lot). Hope you read and enjoy some of her others! 😊 4d

I must be going soft as I get older. Characters like Emma Woodhouse and Catherine Moreland, from Northanger Abbey, used to annoy me, but now I find their innocence and good intentions endearing. This dramatization was excellent company on some very boring treadmill runs.

Rereading Emma prompted by the news of the upcoming movie, via audio so I can #audiocrochet since I'm getting nervous about finishing this blanket before Xmas 😬 At least it's starting to look more like a blanket than a weird scarf... but I crochet very slowly.

Feeling nostalgic today and going through my wedding photos. I love my centerpieces! Super thrifty. I already owned all the books (and for those I didn‘t it gave me a good excuse to buy more books...) and my mom owned the milk glass. All books made it safely back home, haha.

cherinium A coworker recently gave me two canvas shopping bags full of books she had used as centerpieces at her wedding. She bought them all at thrift stores and had no intention of keeping them past the wedding. I'm the one who made out on that deal! 4mo

Before she began writing Emma, Austen wrote to a friend “I am going to take a heroine whom no one but myself will much like”. She wasn't so much unlikeable as simply a flawed character (the horror!). And the book isn't so much “about“ Emma herself: it's a slow-burn exploration of the lives of genteel women, with marriage, gender, and social politics all delightfully satirised. My audio book adventures continue. I enjoyed this book, and enjoyed the dramatization of the novel. I‘ve tried to read it several times but could never get through it, but finally completed it! And I can totally see how Clueless is a modern version now. I recommend the audible version for others like me who couldn‘t get into the written book.

1) Emma, because I loved the movie Clueless.
2) I was 11 and my mom gave me a volume of Austen for Christmas.
3) Colin Firth, as both his Darcy gents.
4) Definitely Lizzie when younger. Possibly Elinor now?
5) Knightley.
6) Wickham. The timeless cad.
7. Oh. The 2005 P&P film soothes me - I fell asleep to it every night through some hard years. Also, the 2009 BBC Emma is utterly charming. #janeites #austentatiousanswers #janeausten

Emma just didn't hold my attention. I couldn't relate to any of the characters and the long stretches of dialogue didn't appeal to me. The plot was thin and plodding.

The narration of the audiobook was excellent but the sound effects were too prominent in the mix. Ticking clocks, goo-goo babies, silverware scraping on plates, microphones that seemed to be placed in the heels of shoes - it was hard to listen to at times.

bookishbitch I find the major character so irritating! 6mo

A book ahead of its time. Warms your heart and soul. And Emma is so relatable at time and other times you just want to shake her up and be like "Girl stop." But the ending is satisfying and really amazing.

Such a wholesome and hearty book about this girl Emma who is confident with herself, maybe a little too much which makes her do somethings she's later not proud of. Way ahead of its time and worth a read.

I first read this in spring 2004, and didn‘t much care for it. That was for a class. This time was for a family book club, and I‘d hoped to like it better as an adult.

Unfortunately not. I found every character insufferable. Interesting parallels to her other books, and well written, but definitely not my favorite. Only one I have left is Mansfield Park, and juvenilia.

I did end up liking it more during my reread via audiobook than in my initial read 10 yrs ago, but it‘s still one of my least favorite Austen. It‘s not terrible, but it‘s so long! There are some delightfully ridiculous characters and the audiobook narrator did an amazing job conveying them, but it was slow and meandering in certain points. All-in-all, a pretty fun read, but I would not recommend reading it as your first foray into Austen.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa It‘s funny, I‘ve read my way through almost every book of Austen‘s...except this one. It just never sounded as interesting to me as the others. 8mo
feminismandyoga It's my least favorite too. It just feels like she's messing with people's lives. But the high school adaptation from the '90s is my face adaptation of any book ever. 8mo
Merethebookgal @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Yeah, it‘s funny bc it‘s some people‘s favorite Austen, but it‘s not on the same level, in my opinion. You could check out the abridged Audible version with a cast recording that‘s like half the length of the actual novel, or you could just watch Clueless bc that‘s an amazingly fun movie retelling 😄 8mo

⭐️⭐️⭐️ I had to finally read this considering Clueless is my all-time favorite movie. Unfortunately, the fun of figuring out how each character & situation adapted to the updated film version is the only reason I got through this. Though the full-cast audio narration is fab, it didn‘t quite save the boring story & dull characters. I might be dodging tomatoes here, but I after finally reading P&P a few years ago, & now this, I‘m not into Austen.

BooksTeasAndBookishThings And this is my least favourite Austen, but I absolutely LOVE P&P. It is to this day my favourite classic ❤️ At least you know, though, but even as someone who loves P&P, I agree this one is her worst IMO 9mo
