I Am, I Am, I Am
I Am, I Am, I Am: Seventeen Brushes with Death | Maggie O'Farrell
An extraordinary memoir--told entirely in near-death experiences--from one of Britain's best-selling novelists, for fans of Wild, When Breath Becomes Air, and The Year of Magical Thinking. We are never closer to life than when we brush up against the possibility of death. I Am, I Am, I Am is Maggie O'Farrell's astonishing memoir of the near-death experiences that have punctuated and defined her life. The childhood illness that left her bedridden for a year, which she was not expected to survive. A teenage yearning to escape that nearly ended in disaster. An encounter with a disturbed man on a remote path. And, most terrifying of all, an ongoing, daily struggle to protect her daughter--for whom this book was written--from a condition that leaves her unimaginably vulnerable to life's myriad dangers. Seventeen discrete encounters with Maggie at different ages, in different locations, reveal a whole life in a series of tense, visceral snapshots. In taut prose that vibrates with electricity and restrained emotion, O'Farrell captures the perils running just beneath the surface, and illuminates the preciousness, beauty, and mysteries of life itself.

I just finished re-reading Maggie O'Farrell's I Am, I Am, I Am: Seventeen Brushes with Death (it's our listener-chosen November Book Club book for Unabridged, and I was wowed all over again by O'Farrell's brilliance. While I'll save most of my thoughts for our podcast discussion (listen during the first week in November and then join the discussion on social media all month), (continued in comments)

UnabridgedPod I so appreciate the way that she emphasizes both the tenuous nature of a life and also the wonder of living. Each new brush of death reminds the reader of how precious life is. Though the stories could stand alone, their accumulation offers a vivid sense of O'Farrell's life journey. I absolutely love this memoir. 2mo

Latest #audiocrochet project done! I finished up this shiny magikarp hat while listening to I Am I Am I Am. It was a lot harder than I thought especially the tail which didn‘t turn out right and I‘m not sure if I was counting wrong or the pattern had issues (I had to frog it twice & still doesn‘t seem right). I haven‘t put in the barbels yet and was thinking of leaving it off as I imagine the 6yo might complain about it hanging about his face.

Megabooks @britt_brooke So true! Even people I usually agree with like you and @L_auren , sometimes we feel differently. (Loner is fascinating, though, if you haven‘t read it. Great twist!) Same with Tampa and How to Start a Fire. 🤷🏻‍♀️ (edited) 3mo

Really terrific, low-key memoir. Based on 17 near-death experiences, o‘Farrel‘s life story is told with a lack of self pity that is bordering on clinical but leaves you wondering how any of us survive at all. Lovely writing from a strong, insightful author.

17 essays held together by the theme of the author‘s brushes with death. It‘s a poetic look at each of those moments with the maturity of hindsight. It‘s about death and cheating death and the awareness that so much can change in a moment. There is no single story arc and yet O‘Farrell brilliantly weaves together her narrative that somehow seems to have a beginning, middle, and end. Life is unpredictable; live it to the fullest.

I really liked this approach to memoir: slices of a life, nonlinear and centered around a common theme. In this case, it's a terrifying one, as O'Farrell relates her various brushes with death, many taking place while traveling, and some due to an illness from early childhood. She writes beautifully, whether about mortal terror or quieter moments. As a person who is fairly risk-averse, I admired her zeal for new experiences, in spite of her luck.

TrishB I liked this one and this author 👍🏻 7mo

I think Maggie O‘Farrell was aiming to make readers really consider how fleeting moments can alter the course of their lives. In this memoir, it is clear that her near misses with death gave her a new respect and awe of life that she shares with her readers in a very profound and extremely personal and intimate way. And that last chapter about her daughter left me breathless. i was afraid to read this, but I‘m truly glad I did!

This is a unique way of telling an autobiography. Each (non chronological) chapter reflects on a near death experience of the author and are beautifully written. I was incredibly moved by the story of two of her children and her fertility issues as well as a childhood case of encephalitis in particular. This really moved me and at times resonates strongly

Maggie O'Farrell has bravely allowed us all to see a snapshot of her life, but rather than show us the best parts, she's shown us the times when things could have easily ended differently - her near death experiences. I liked this collection but I wasn't amazed by it and lost interest somewhere in the middle. It's 3 stars for this brave and thought-provoking memoir.

• I am, I am, I am (2017) by Maggie O'Farrell

I actually read this in 24h - hadn't done that in a long time! I was hooked on this memoir. O'Farrell gives the reader little snippets of near-death experiences she has had (not necessarily her own), and since they aren't chronological the reader slowly puts together all these isolated moments of her life. Her writing is, as always, outstanding, visceral, and personal. I loved learning more about her.
