The Help | Kathryn Stockett
The wildly popular New York Times bestseller and reading group favoriteAibileen is a black maid in 1962 Jackson, Mississippi, who's always taken orders quietly, but lately she's unable to hold her bitterness back. Her friend Minny has never held her tongue but now must somehow keep secrets about her employer that leave her speechless. White socialite Skeeter just graduated college. She's full of ambition, but without a husband, she's considered a failure. Together, these seemingly different women join together to write a tell-all book about work as a black maid in the South, that could forever alter their destinies and the life of a small town...

I am so conflicted.

The characters seem stereotypical, I didn‘t like the glossing-over of the civil rights movement, some of the dialect was cringey, and I‘m uncomfortable with the fact it was written by a white woman.

Still, the story is entertaining, the plot moves along nicely, and I truly enjoyed and was moved by many parts. The audiobook is incredibly well done.

If I just consider this a beach read, feel-good type of book, it‘s ok.⬇️

sprainedbrain I also may have rated it higher had I not read so much really great ownvoices literature dealing more realistically with these themes, or Roxane Gay‘s essay about the movie/book beforehand. I feel like it has to be a pick, though, since I enjoyed the audiobook so much.

This was my #booktomovie choice for #booked2019... but I‘m not sure I want to watch the movie. 🤷🏻‍♀️

⭐️⭐️⭐️
(edited) 2mo
Susannah I never felt good about the fact that people thought this was such an amazing representation of the Civil Rights South, and I think it‘s been considered great literature when it‘s ... just not. Your review was great; it captured my ambivalence perfectly. 2mo
sprainedbrain @Susannah you just perfectly summed up my overall feeling... this is not great literature and I‘m not sure why it‘s lauded like it is. 2mo

WhatWouldJaneDo My mom gave me a copy of this years ago and I've avoided reading it for all the reasons you mentioned, but it fits a PopSugar category I'm struggling with (more than a million ratings on Goodreads) and since I have it on hand I'm planning to try it and hopefully just keep the beach read mentality. Thanks for the great review! 2mo

Moray_Reads This is why I've never read it. I remember being very uncomfortable seeing interviews with the author that failed to address any of these issues

Loved this story so much! This is one of the few books I recommend to watch the movie first, because the actors did such a wonderful job portraying these characters. Picturing the actors while reading made the story that much more enjoyable. Such an amazing book with a really important message. 5 ⭐️

5+++ ⭐️- I‘m getting more and more into audiobooks, specifically digital audiobooks. When I saw that Octavia Spencer would be reprising her role as Minnie from the 2011 movie, The Help (based on the ahmazing 2009 book), I jumped at the chance to buy a copy from Audible.

I adored this well narrated audiobook that made me remember why I loved this 2009 book so very much.

My Full Review: http://bit.ly/2HQnwwi

jillrhudy whaaaaat? OCTAVIA is Minnie? OMG I have to listen to this. Oh yes! Libby has it for free! Going to be a long wait though! 3mo
Bakingbookworm @jillrhudy It was such a good listen. The other two narrators are just as wonderful. Enjoy!! 3mo

Bakingbookworm @IvoryLunatic Audiobooks are soooo long. It‘s hard to listen to them in time before they‘re due back. I joined Audible.ca and just buy the audiobooks I want (Harry Potter, Into the Wilderness series, The Help etc) with my monthly credit then put my account on hold so I can catch up and not keep accumulating audiobooks/$15 per month fee. 3mo
IvoryLunatic @Bakingbookworm I used to have audible but it just got too expensive for me. Now I just take my chances with the library and if they don‘t have anything I want at the moment, I listen to podcasts. 3mo
Bakingbookworm @IvoryLunatic I hear ya. I‘m just collecting my fav books and then I‘ll probably put it on hold indefinitely. I prefer to listen to books I‘ve already read. 3mo

HF about the lives of African Americans who work in the houses of white women in the ‘60s. I loved how Skeeter fought for the women she documented, & against racism, not only through her writing but also through some of her more sneaky actions. Chapters were written from different characters‘ points of view allowing us to gain a deeper understanding of their lives. This book is in my “faves of all time” stack! Saw movie after...book is way better.

Because of its widespread acceptance as a noteworthy novel, I‘ve been wondering about this. Fictional Minny voices an opinion here: “...it‘s a sorry fact that it‘s a white woman doing this” (217). The author is a white woman, writing about, and from the perspective of, Black women. To what degree is her writing this novel another white person‘s attempt to “save” African Americans? To what degree is it beneficial and to what degree is it harmful?

Stand-off between Aibileen and Miss Leefolt about Aibileen‘s new just-for-her bathroom: “And I know she ain‘t saying what she want a say either and it‘s a strange thing happening here cause nobody saying nothing and we still managing to have us a conversation” (29). Love this line. It holds a lot.

It‘s #BookishGoal 45 now.

I liked the audiobook, Whoopi Goldberg‘s German voice-over artist was a great ear-catcher. The story is very strong when it comes to describing the social situation at that time (which is not so long ago 🤔). Then it‘s touching and left me handshaking – because racial segregation is so absurd to me.

But also it felt a bit long here and there even though I can‘t put my finger on why.

I‘ve never quite understood how a person‘s color makes them less. Sadly things haven‘t progressed in the US as much as they should have since the setting of this book.
My students have been loving the book, so I think the success of that speaks for itself.

What a fantastic story. What an eye opening read about black women working in white households during the 1960s.
