Lolly Willowes | Sylvia Townsend Warner
76 posts | 43 read | 114 to read
In Lolly Willowes, Sylvia Townsend Warner tells of an aging spinster's struggle to break way from her controlling familya classic story that she treats with cool feminist intelligence, while adding a dimension of the supernatural and strange. Warner is one of the outstanding and indispensable mavericks of twentieth-century literature, a writer to set beside Djuna Barnes and Jane Bowles, with a subversive genius that anticipates the fantastic flights of such contemporaries as Angela Carter and Jeanette Winterson.

This book was a hot mess but I loved it anyway. We don't get a real peek into Lolly's head until 50 pages in. And the last quarter could have been a different book entirely, it took such a turn!
But... an aging spinster seeks a life of solitude, becomes a witch, and gives a pretty great feminist monologue right at the end? Hmmm. Yeah, this was my kind of mess 😂
Also it was the very first #botm pick in 1926. Pretty neat!

Starts out as a typical tale of a spinster striking out on her own, and then takes a turn into a wholly unexpected but wonderfully subversive direction. But I won't say more than that as part of the fun was the surprise. I suggest avoiding commentary before reading even if, like me, you generally don't mind spoilers.

May 1st. Our #NYRBBookClub is officially underway! I thought it'd be fun to share personal favorites from NYRB that we have read. Above are my favorites of the ones I own that I have actually read. What are yours?

sisilia I have Lolly Willowes, and I couldn‘t relate to Morel 🙈 My favorite so far is Grand Hotel, All for Nothing, and The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne 🌷 9mo
GatheringBooks wow! they all look great - and i haven‘t read them all!! 😭😭 will do a separate post of my faves and tag you. 🧚🏼‍♀️💕📚 9mo

This is one of those situations where going in to a story blind (as I like to do) ended with a surprise. I bought it because it was the first ever BOTM back in 1926. I knew it had been called a classic and feminist. I was cruising along for 2/3 of the book with Lolly, a spinster aunt who spent most of her life in service of others, and then in the 1920s in her late 40s, she moves to the country alone, and suddenly... witchcraft. 😳😂

I loved this little subversive tale with a touch of the strange. In order to escape her controlling family, Lolly Willowes moves to the countryside of Great Mop. Flouting societal conventions and enjoying a freedom of herself, Lolly soon becomes an actual witch.

I‘m really enjoying this book! I didn‘t expect the humor and I love the main character. I picked this simply because it was the first selection when #BOTM started in 1926, but I‘m definitely going to read more by this author.

This is the last BOTM book I‘ll get to this month. I‘ll have finished 4 after this (I enjoyed them all). I started and DNF‘d 8, which brings me down to 22 unread BOTMs. Not too bad - cleared some space on that shelf. 😸

Finished this little novel this morning and it is one of the best aging spinster tales I have ever read. At the beginning it reads like a Jane Austen novel with Laura Willowes growing up and her family trying to find a mate for her. Unlucky in love she becomes plain dear obedient aunt Lolly until one day she has had enough! Pretty cozy with some great English countryside descriptions but it gets pretty weird at the end (like witchcraft weird).

On paper, this book sounds right up my alley: a woman is tired of dealing with society‘s and her family‘s expectations and needs, and moves to the country to start living her life. But the writing style was just so boring! I don‘t know how many naps I have taken to get through this book, I just couldn‘t keep my eyes open. I really wanted to like this, but it was just boring 🤷‍♀️

I'm really conflicted on how I feel about this one. I wanted to love it, a spinster makes a deal with the devil and becomes a witch just do she can get some peace?! Brilliant! It felt to me like a book where the time period made the context deeper. There were details I just wasn't registering and whilst parts felt magical realism the dream like quality didn't allow me to just go with it. Some wonderful parts but it took a long while to get going.

"Willows" or "Willow-es"?

Dogearedcopy Interestingly, the only reference to that last name that I find is in ‘The Oxford Dictionary of Family Names in Britain and Ireland‘, and it‘s in reference to a 14th century Poll Tax. Incredibly, the name doesn‘t seem to exist in contemporary times outside of that novel! Though admittedly, I only did a cursory search. Anyway, I would be tempted to say /‘wil-ōs/ unless there‘s something in the text that says otherwise. 2y

After her father dies, Laura (Lolly to her family) comes under the care of her brother and lives a suffocating life in the city, having to be eternally obliging to others. After some years have passed she thinks, To hell with this shit, #ItsMyLife and rejects polite society by moving back to the countryside to live in isolation as a witch.

Sly, strange, irreverent, and witty, but probably not to everyone's taste. #rockinmay @Cinfhen

Cinfhen Awesome review, book is on my #TBR but thanks to your summary I feel like I don't need to read this one 😃💕 3y
saresmoore Well, damn. Here's another book I want to start reading ASAP! 3y
batsy @Cinfhen Oh no the book is MUCH better 💚 But I'm learning that not everyone likes it as much as I do. *sad* 3y

batsy @saresmoore She's so good. I must read her other books! 3y
Cinfhen @Reviewsbylola pretty much put a big fat stinky face on this book months ago...so I was already pretty ambivalent about reading it...maybe I'll keep it in my #TBR a bit longer & will not abandon it all together ...thanks @batsy 3y
batsy @Cinfhen @Reviewsbylola Oh no! Lol. But I totally get it. And our TBRs are plenty out of control already, thanks to Litsy 💜 3y
Reviewsbylola Lol, @Cinfhen is right. I absolutely hated this. 😭😭 3y

#readathon continues! Sticking with shorter books this time to see if that helps with the momentum

My first ever #botm! I'm so excited! And the tote bag is NICE. Free totes are usually so crappy.

PandaPanda I'm obsessed with the tote! I use it as my gym 💪❤️⛹️ 3y
PandaPanda Oops. My emojis replaced the word bag lol 3y
Megabooks Marlena is great! Enjoy! 3y
HippieChickHomeschool @PandaPanda Maybe I'll start going to the gym so I have a good place to use it! 😉 3y

Pickpick

Finished this delightful, slim, novel about a woman who just wants to be left the hell alone.

Same. Lolly. Same.

It's ironic that I read this on the plane to visit my family. Zero minutes of alone time in my near future.

#TravelReads #ReadHarder: published 1900-1950

Notafraidofwords Stacked. I want to be left alone too lol 3y
WhatDeeReads @Notafraidofwords This is one example of how to do it. Takes a little weird turn toward the end, but I dug it. 3y
Reviewsbylola Glad you like this one. I really hated it. I couldn't connect with the story at all and then it just got weird af. I wanted to love it so much. 😭 3y
WhatDeeReads @Reviewsbylola I liked it. I just went with the weirdness. I spend a lot of time alone. I understand how your brain can play tricks on her. 3y
