#audiobook 2 done for #BFC also 35 minutes of exercise today!
I have to give this a so-so as I just didn‘t love it. I think I‘m mainly just tired of #YA and this is very teen and I am multiple decades beyond. I think teen readers would definitely enjoy it though. Well done audio work. This also completes my Z for #litsyatoz!

36 Minutes of exercise today for my #BFC! Also a good third into my second audiobook. So far it‘s OK, but I‘m not loving so far. It may be I didn‘t realize it was YA, and I‘m a little burnt out on YA.

This book is hard for me to review. On one hand, the writing was great, the story good, the topics it covered important. On the other hand, I had trouble relating to Zuri, and don‘t like P&P. And... honestly? I felt vilified. I know that is part of Zuri‘s character, and that caucasian culture as a whole still has miles to improve, but I didn‘t like being told we‘re all insensitive uncaring culture destroyers. Maybe this just shows my ignorance :(

GlassAsDiamonds I wouldn‘t say ignorance - no one reasonably would like that (and I don‘t think mass generalisation help anyone progress any agenda ever...). 2w

Not for me. I love a retelling but this didn't feel like there was enough original content for me. P&P is close to my heart, but I felt like I cringed my way through this. I didn't feel connected to any of the characters and Zuri was just horrible - her 'prejudice' went beyond being judgemental to telling everyone what their identity should be and how they should express it.

AvidaLectrix ☹ Bummer. I love P&P too! 3w

I started this “Pride and Prejudice Remix” last night, and then finished it tonight. I love how Zoboi reworked Austen‘s classic to set it in present-day Bushwick, a neighborhood in Brooklyn. The protagonist, Zuri, is not impressed when the Darcys move in across the street, but you probably know the rest of the story. The book addresses gentrification, community, culture shock, and first love. It was a fun read with a lot of heart.

I think I would've liked this a lot more if it hadn't been for the Pride and Prejudice-ness of it, which I should've known but somehow hadn't anticipated, so that's all on me. I did enjoy the very modern take on it all, though. Also, Elizabeth Acevedo should narrate all audiobooks. Every single one.

I really enjoyed this book. I have never read Pride & Prejudice so I wasn't comparing it to the original book. But I do have the book and it has made me want to read it to see how it is. I loved seeing how Darius and Zuri interacted together and how they really didn't like each other at first but the more they got to know each other they realized they really liked each other. I also loved Zuri family! Great quick read!

I‘m torn on this—I think I was distracted by trying to identify the correlations to Pride & Prejudice, and evaluating how this “remix” matched up. Several scenes & plot points felt a little forced to me, like it was trying too hard to match up to P&P. That said, I liked ZZ and I loved the themes Zoboi brings out: class, gentrification, pride in a neighborhood & an identity, crossing boundaries, understanding people who are different from you...⤵️

BarbaraJean Con‘t: Overall, I loved the idea of taking P&P and setting it in a modern-day Brooklyn neighborhood gradually being gentrified. But I think this would have been a tighter narrative if some of the correspondences to P&P had been pared down so this story could come into its own just a bit more. 3.5 stars rounded up to 4, because I may have been doing a little too much comparison to the original. 2mo

I am a sucker for P&P and any retellings based on it. This one takes place in a minority neighborhood in Brooklyn. Zuri is a Haitian-Dominican girl from the hood with a big family. When Darius and his bougie family move in across the street, everything starts to change. Zuri is so judgemental but I get why and where this defense comes from. To see them dance around each other and how their relationship stutters was beautiful. (Cont in comments)

TsundokuAleax Zuri has walls and trust issues with outsiders. Darius is such a perfect version of Darcy with how much of himself he hides from the world. Everytime he lets Zuri see him, he throws up another front.

TsundokuAleax It was wonderful to see so much of the Brooklyn I grew up in in this book. I also love how much this book referenced the culture of these neighborhoods and the people who live there. The inclusion of Santeria was a special one to see since it is not talked about often. 3mo

If you know me, you know I‘m an Austen fangirl and I love Pride and Prejudice. I fully expected to love this ‘remix‘ and I did. It‘s smart, funny, and very thoughtful... it‘s a retelling, but with realistically modern characters and a meaningful storyline. It‘s a very well done YA romance with lots of poetic prose. The narration by Elizabeth Acevedo is soooo good, too. She really brings it to life.

Magnificent, transcendental, gut punching. Brilliant tribute to Bushwick and Jane Austen‘s original work.

I‘ll reread and reread this book when I want to get lost in the themes of coming-of-age, self-discovery, first love, family-pride, and the love of Bushwick, or any neighborhood that starts to lose its heart.

I really enjoyed this clever retelling of P&P. Zuri Benitez lives in Bushwick, Brooklyn, a predominantly Afro-Latinx community, and is witnessing the increasing gentrification of the neighborhood she grew up in. Most significantly, the arrival of Darius and Ainsley Darcy, two brothers in the rich family that moved in across the street.

I loved how Haitian and Dominican food and culture played such a huge part of the story. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
