We Deserve Monuments is a beautifully written YA novel, that focuses on a multitude of important concepts while exploring small mysteries!
Tre is a sophomore, and his family is dealing with the recent death of his older brother. This story is about his family dealing with that grief, but it‘s also about friendship, crushes, the pressure of high school sports, and figuring out how those things work together. It‘s also about a Native American team proving themselves, and includes some action packed basketball games. 🏀
Due to language and alcohol use, I would consider this mature YA.
Brilliant! Two years after 9/11, a commission is formed to build a memorial. All is well until the commission discovers that the winning design was submitted by a Muslim.

Here's my Bookspin list for February! I am both pleased by the number of books that didn't and and slightly dismayed by the number of books that did carry over from the last time I did this in August. Lets see if we can knock this list down some more!
I highly enjoyed the growing friendship between Abena and Faiza. Abena came from a rich family while Faiza was a Kaya girl from the country. A kayayoo (kaya) is a person (usually a young girl) who carries heavy objects on their head. They are usually seen as low class.
It was a good read.

I'm almost done with the tagged book but after hearing so much about kelewele while reading, I figured that I would try making this Ghanaian food. Kelewele is fried spicy plantain. This was tasty; however, I would like to try it from an actual Ghanaian restaurant.

An interesting but hard read throughout.
Read for reading prompts.
