The Illustrated Eric
The Illustrated Eric | Terry Pratchett, Josh Kirby
50 posts | 94 read | 22 to read
Terry Pratchett's hilarious take on the Faust legend stars many of the Discworld's most popular characters. Eric is the Discworld's only demonology hacker. The trouble is, he's not very good at it. All he wants is the usual three wishes: to be immortal, rule the world and have the most beautiful woman fall madly in love with him. The usual stuff. But what he gets is Rincewind, the Disc's most incompetent wizard, and Rincewind's Luggage (the world's most dangerous travel accessory) into the bargain. The outcome is an outrageous adventure that will leave Eric wishing once more - this time, quite fervently - that he'd never been born.

I love Prachett‘s version of hell in this book “The damned must suffer repeated viewings of other people's holiday slides, elevator music, and the reading aloud of every clause of the 40,000 volumes of health and safety rules.”

Soubhiville I don‘t have the illustrated edition, but I did enjoy Eric. I think I‘ve read this one 3 times... I love that it‘s a quick read, and perfect for in between heavier books. 8mo
See All 18 Comments
julesG @Soubhiville The illustrated edition is just that, the same content just with a few pictures added to it. 😁 You're right about it being a palate cleanser. 8mo
Soubhiville I‘ve always been intrigued by the summoning demons trope, especially when it comes with humor! And I love to see authors get creative with their demon building and hellscapes. 8mo
Soubhiville I enjoyed The Parrot, tiny Quezovercoatl (TP‘s punny names strike again!), And hell‘s paperwork traps- perfect! 8mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Yes I enjoyed this one too. And yes @Soubhiville I loved the commentaries on corporate infrastructure that were all wrapped up in his Hell. 8mo
DrexEdit I'm finally caught up! Thank you short Eric book! 😊 I really enjoyed this one. I felt Rincewind comes into his own here as a refined character. Ironically the eponymous Eric is barely present, but he gets events underway in a good way. 8mo
Laura317 I am not a huge Rincewind fan, but the description of Hell had me cracking up. Giving commendations as punishments, all the paperwork was just such fun. 8mo
gossamerchild I actually don't like this one 🙄. It feels incomplete, somehow, or a filler between two other stories. I feel bad for saying this 🤣 8mo
dariazeoli I was happy for a shorter read this month, but Rincewind continues to make me feel decidedly “meh” - consistency! 😉 8mo
Gezemice @gossamerchild I have read this a while ago and was not one of my favorites, so I did not re-read it. 8mo
khooliha I am beginning to feel like Rincewind is never going to find himself in the sort of story that let's him develop, which really sets him apart from the other MC branches on the Discworld books. I will say, though, this book wasn't as bad as bad as it was in my memory! Not, you know, real good or anything, but I like hanging with Rincewind and I liked how mean he was to Eric. 8mo
khooliha (I also forgot to comment the day this post went up, which is a review of the book in and of itself!) 8mo
julesG @khooliha No need to comment on these posts right away. Do it when you have time to do it. 😉 8mo
Iblu Sooo, catching up catching up coming through!!!! So this Rincewind subseries appears to have a pattern: a forever on the run moth-eaten wizard encounters a willing or not so willing travel companion for a trip to far away (in space and/or time) places. Plus the Luggage, which in this book featured only as a frustrated running after kind of pet. I still liked it though!!! Although my preferred series are those with the witches... 6mo
julesG @Iblu Now that you mentioned it, I can see the pattern. Love the witches and Death, of course. 😁 6mo

Sorry @julesG ! #ookbookclub

Not my favourite Pratchett so far. Not sure if I needed to be more familiar with Faust, if I‘d have been better off with print (though the audio narrator did grow on me), or if I just needed to concentrate better, but I found the storyline jumpy & hard to follow.

Which doesn‘t change the fact it has a lot of very funny moments, and some fantastic characters. Especially Lavaeolus. I‘d read a whole book about him!

julesG Well, no need to be sorry about not liking it. 8mo

You have an extra book‘s-worth of space in your suitcase next week @julesG - Eric arrived early (but thank you!)

Still practicing travelling light, I‘m reading Milkman on my phone. Love the book (quite a surprise!) - her voice is just 👌. Not loving the phone-reading experience though 🥺

CarolynM Milkman would be extra tough on the phone - all those long, long paragraphs! 8mo

Pratchett delivers the best silly stories, all while picking at the sacred cows of classic literature, religion, and corporate infrastructure...and that‘s just in this installment. So read it for a pure fun romp or for the witty asides, either way a fun way to pass a few hours.

The scenes between Rincewind and his probable ancestor Lavaeolus (I can't remember if it gets confirmed or not) got me Actually Emotional and I'm very glad Eric wasn't around to ruin the last one.
#OokBOokClub

khooliha I should have read literally half a page more to see the ancestor thing confirmed. And I'm happy that Rincewind didn't want to kill him, despite his earlier grandfather-slaying enthusiasm. Love yourself/your family, Rincewind! 9mo

Soubhiville This one‘s a short fast and fun read! 9mo
RachelO @julesG Aw, thank you! I‘m sure it‘ll turn up that weekend though (it‘s an ebook, so more chance of arriving on time 🤞). I might need packing tips though! I‘m off to Edinburgh for 10 days with just walk-on baggage & my usual ‘fling it all in‘ approach isn‘t going to work! A month with just cabin baggage is V Impressive (and quite a lot beyond me)! 9mo
julesG @Soubhiville I'm looking forward to rereading it, not only in English, but also the illustrated edition. I remember reading the German edition more than 20 years ago. 9mo
julesG @RachelO I had access to a washing machine and it being summer helped, too. I try to pack items that I can mix and match. Say, long sweater that works with jeans and with a pair of leggings; large scarf that can double as a wrap-around skirt/cardigan/... 9mo

Eric Thursley is an adolescent demonologist hoping to cut a deal with a demon in order to become king of all the nations of the Disc, meet the most beautiful woman in history, and live forever... except he accidentally summons Rincewind instead (who has been stuck in the Dungeon Dimensions for a few books now) and of course nothing goes according to plan.

Quick and goofy. Loved the time travel back to the Discworld equivalent of the Trojan War.

twohectobooks Are you reading them consecutively? I just started a planned consecutive (re)read this year and I‘m very excited. 13mo

Super funny book! It was one of those reads where your husband tells you off because you keep giggling to yourself and hes reading Private Eye

The story didnt go weird or philosophical in a hard to follow way like a lot of Pratchetts early books do. It was just long enough, I never felt any sections needed more time or got too long winded.

Erics character was adorable for a clueless teenager and I loved the soldiers aswell

Soubhiville @hoggman you really don‘t need to read them in order. I like this one because it‘s a quick read, but they‘re all pretty good and funny. The first two- Colour of Magic and Light Fantastic, I think weren‘t as good as the others, but by the third the Discworld feel really settled and the signature humor shows. 2y
hoggman Good to know! I had heard that you didn't in general, but that there were still some that should be read before others, like within different storylines. But i dont really know much about it, just that I want more lmao 2y

Flying through this one, with my lovely Saturday coffee. I thought I had read most of the Discworld novels. Imagine my delight, when going through them yesterday on Goodreads, there is at least 10 I haven't read yet😊 Delighted with life!

BookishGal I've been recommended this series so many times but it just seems so daunting! I have no idea where to start!! 3y
Greg @BookishGal Do a google search for best order to read DiscWorld. There are graphics that show the orders of the different novels. I would start with either the Witches books or maybe the City Watch. You don't and probably shouldn't go in order of publication. Enjoy! 3y
Lizpixie You have to start with The Witches. From there starts the whole wild ride, but first there was always Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg & co. 3y
BookishGal @Greg thanks for the suggestion!! 3y
Ais Definitely the witches arc is the best, but I do absolutely ❤️ the mort (death) arc as well. I think Rincwind is for a seasoned Discworlder! 3y
