Not impressed. Reminded me of why I don‘t like Dutch literature😔 Conversations I can‘t imagine anyone actually having and in general dry and emotionless language use. Maybe the Dutch language just isn‘t suited for passion...
I did like the story itself. It‘s about guilt, the desire to DO something, about being naive, about learning to see a parent as just another human being.

Deifio The cover looks just like my Cerny piano sheet music! 🤔 1d
LittleBug @deifio Hope that‘s more fun to play than this was to read!😉 (edited) 1d

Fun read! Light hearted and yet with threads about loaded subjects such as the opium trade in colonial times and gender bias.

A man, dying in the ER, reflects on his life, especially on his process of writing his one and only book.

The story fell flat for me. Very little depth, unconvincing dialogue. Maybe those are hard to achieve in under 100 pages, but then, there are plenty of awesome short stories, aren‘t there?

Finally read this little gem! Thanks @Caroline2 for including this in the #blinddatebookswap☺️

Not my usual fare, but fascinating to read. The stories are somewhat somber, the first two about people who have in one way or another retreated from the world.
The final one is my favourite, it reads like a summary of a myth and illustrates how myths can be created when history gets embellished.

Caroline2 I‘m glad you liked it. 👍 1mo

My first Coelho and I'm not impressed. Could have been a story of a very profound experience, but fell flat for me. Didn't like any of the characters, couldn't connect to the story... I doubt I'll be reading another Coelho any time soon...

And that‘s number 10 in my WOTReread done!💪🏼 Mat‘s storyline was good fun, Rand and Nyneave achieve the unachievable but nobody knows/believes which causes some creative plotting... I‘ve given up trying to pace myself with these books, next one will be started on today!🥴☺️

So much of what the previous books have been working towards is finally fulfilled in this one, very satisfying! It may be the pregnancy hormones, but I cried over Elayne and Aviendha‘s ceremony and loved their and Min‘s bonding with Rand. I can‘t wait for Mat‘s storyline to continue, so much fun! And the end… I promised myself to finish a few other books before starting book 10, but I don‘t think I‘ll be able to keep that promise!☺️

Yay, writing reviews of books I actually read recently? Number 8 in my WoT Reread felt like a built up to the rest of the series, with the pace slowly picking up. We see a continuation of Egwene‘s awesomeness, despite all the bickering Nyneave and Elayne finally reach their shared goal, Rand learns the hard way that he doesn‘t know everything and on top of all that we‘re left with quite a few cliffhangers…

Almost caught up with my reviews😎 Number 7 in my Wheel of Time reread was again a joy. I‘ve seen many reviews about how slow these middle books in the series are, but I‘m still going through them at high speed☺️ Egwene might just become one of my favourite characters, Mat is slowly becoming more likeable (tank you Tylin!😉), and Nyneave & Lan finally get their story written.
#WoT

I can‘t stop reading these books!🤩 In this one, Perrin is back, Egwene develops into a very impressive young woman, and the ending…😳😱 The bickering between Elayne and Nyneave is still annoying at times, as is Rand and Mat‘s conviction that only they know what needs to be done. But then, to a certain extent this also makes them human...☺️

This book was like a trip down memory lane for me 😊 It reminded me very much of a childhood friend, who came up with all sorts of adventures based on the books we read. That's what this felt like to me too, a story of a boy that creates an adventure to explain what he doesn't (yet) understand.
I don't usually like to read books for a younger target audience, but because of the nostalgia I actually had good fun with this one.

Wow...just wow. This is such an important book. I'll admit, I didn't like most of the characters, but that's not really the point anyway. Shamsie does an incredible job of placing the ancient myth of Antigone in our time. Because I was familiar with the myth, I realised it was going to be a tragic story, but the modern setting really brought it home. Simultaneously a beautiful, horrific and tragic story. Absolute MUST READ!

March has turned out to be a very good month for my WoT Reread…Book 5 done makes 3 books in one month☺️ I understand many critics‘ complaints about the slower pace, but it just doesn‘t bother me the way it seems to do others. LittleBug Nyneave and Elayne got a bit on my nerve with their constant bickering, but at least they too developed quite a bit. That seems to be the trend in this series, either a lot happens, or there‘s a lot of character development… 5mo

Although I really liked the content, I wasn't too impressed by the writing style. I constantly felt torn back and forth between different aspects of the story, racism, discrimination, feminism, science... This is my first biography, so maybe I'm just not used to the style, but it made me feel disconnected with the people and the subject, even though I really wanted to connect...
Only barely a pick, and only because the content is so important.

Deifio I feel the same way about it. I don't think I can finish it because the writing style is not the point, but rather to some many different aspects of the story. It's very exhausting to read 5mo

I‘m not sure I‘d continue the series without the #HPBuddyRead or without having been told that the later books are better. I don‘t have the patience anymore for YA or children‘s books and HP really does fall in these categories. However, I will ABSOLUTELY have my kids read HP. It‘s easy reading, good fun, and there are quite a few major life lessons in there.

Deifio I absolutely loved them as a kid. I got the first three books for my birthday when nobody in Germany had even heard of HP. I like the first and the third one best! ;-) 7mo

Yay! I actually managed to finish the second WoT book before the end of February. Back on track with my reread! I raced through this book, just like I remember doing the first time. Some critics of the series mention that there‘s too much detail, or even superfluous detail in the books, making the pace slow... So far, I can‘t say I agree. Yes, there are lots of details, but they help us get to know the main characters.

Oliver Twist | Charles Dickens
post image
Mehso-so

I‘ve never really liked reading ‘the classics‘. Every time I‘ve tried I ended up disappointed, or even bored. But, I keep trying, cause…well, there must be a reason they are considered classics, right? Reading Oliver Twist has not helped me to find that reason…
👇🏼👇🏼👇🏼

LittleBug It‘s a cute read, but it‘s filled with what I felt were plot holes. I‘d summarise the story as a ‘Murphy‘s Law‘ kind of heaping of bad luck, followed by a ‘divine intervention‘ kind of never ending good luck. The characters remained flat, stereotypical to me and the setting seemed surreal. I kept wondering if Dickens actually saw the world the way he described it, whether he was making fun of it, or whether that‘s actually the world he lived in…? 7mo

How to be Good | Nick Hornby
post image
Mehso-so

Can‘t say I liked this one. The title seems to suggest it‘s about how one can be good, but to me it read more like a parody on the lengths we go to be happy. The MC is whiny and dissatisfied, is she supposed to be a caricature of modern day western people? The one redeeming thing is the fact that the book did get me thinking. About how I can help people around me be happier and isn‘t that a very nice way to be good?

First one of my WOT-reread done! I started a little later than planned, cause January was a bit more hectic than I expected. Fingers crossed I can get to the second one in the series before the month is over…
I know many critics of WOT see the similarities with LOTR as proof of Robert Jordan‘s lack of imagination. To me, they read more as a tribute to a master. Most of them make me smile in appreciation for both authors.

Had fun reading this one! I don‘t particularly like reading children‘s books, maybe because I don‘t have kids yet to read them with... But this was good fun nonetheless. And there‘s quite a bit of important stuff in there for kids to learn. I quite liked the quote I marked here. It may seem heavy for kids to read something like this, but I really like that JK Rowling isn‘t afraid to address such things. And she doesit wonderfully, I think.

This was a tricky one… Not an easy read, because of both style and subject. Short sentences, often formulated in a ‘stream of consciousness‘ kind of way, have you wondering how much you‘re missing, how many more layers there are to the story. It is not until the end of the book that the story starts to take on a more concrete shape. I almost DNF, but am very glad I pushed through. A very impressive read, can only recommend!

I don‘t know about this one. I grew up watching the 80s film during Christmas holidays. They used the first part of the book for the film and I had fun reading it. But then it got…maybe not boring, but definitely less engaging. With every chapter it felt more like Michael Ende wanted a way to poor as many fantastical creatures and adventures in just one story. It took me forever to finish it and left me quite dissatisfied.

Maewyn I seem to remember that the version we had as children had red print when about Bastian and black the rest of the time. Was it that way in yours? 9mo

ju.ca.no I still have to read this, and am much looking foward to it :) I really enjoyed the first books in the series! 9mo
LittleBug @ju.ca.no I loved them all so far😊 9mo

Really happy with this story. The MC is confronted with an old enemy she only barely defeated in the first book in this series. It felt viable and gave us some more insight into the MC‘s thoughts and feelings.

I only realised in this book, third in this series, that the MC is about my age. Maybe that‘s why I like her so much? She has a no-nonsense attitude, with little patience for non-essential conventionalities.

LittleBug Simultaneously though, she has realistic insecurities, caused by life choices, or inevitabilities. Really enjoyed identifying with her☺️ (edited) 9mo

imyril Such a fun series! I love how Irene‘s confidence seems to have grown - she‘s so secure in her abilities in this one. 9mo
LittleBug @imyril very true! And yet she still has doubts and insecurities. Really like that about her. 9mo

I love the generosity of the Litsy community💜💜
@DuckOfDoom Thanks for these books and the surprise bookmarks☺️ I can‘t wait to read them!!

DuckOfDoom Brandon Sanderson never disappoints!! The books are fantastic - so good that I bought them in Hardcover so they will survive all the rereading 10mo
JLaurenceCohen Great books, though a bit long 10mo
LittleBug @JLaurenceCohen To me there‘s no such thing as a book that‘s too long😊☺️ 10mo
JLaurenceCohen @LittleBug lol, maybe I should say that Sanderson is overly fond of describing things like cornices 10mo
LittleBug @JLaurenceCohen I‘ve only read the Wheel of Time books he wrote... That series is not particularly short either😉 I‘m curious to see if I‘ll recognise a style...maybe in his descriptions🥴 10mo

Thanks soooo much for the Christmas card @ju.ca.no 💜
It was such a lovely surprise! We‘re always late with our cards and therefore usually go digital, but this surprise arrival made me think about maybe going back to proper cards next year

ju.ca.no you‘re welcome😘🤗 10mo
