The Devil Crept In
The Devil Crept In: A Novel | Ania Ahlborn
An unforgettable horror novel from bestselling sensation Ania Ahlbornhailed as a writer of some of the most promising horror Ive encountered in years (New York Times bestselling author Seanan McGuire)in which a small-town boy investigates the mysterious disappearance of his cousin and uncovers a terrifying secret kept hidden for years. Young Jude Brighton has been missing for three days, and while the search for him is in full swing in the small town of Deer Valley, Oregon, the locals are starting to lose hope. Theyre well aware that the first forty-eight hours are critical and after that, the odds usually point to a worst-case scenario. And despite Stevie Clarks youth, he knows that, too; hes seen the cop shows. He knows what each ticking moment may mean for Jude, his cousin and best friend. That, and there was that boy, Max Larsen...the one from years ago, found dead after also disappearing under mysterious circumstances. And then there were the animals: pets gone missing out of yards. For years, the residents of Deer Valley have murmured about these unsolved crimesand that a killer may still be lurking around their quiet town. Now, fear is rebornand for Stevie, who is determined to find out what really happened to Jude, the awful truth may be too horrifying to imagine.

Day 12 of #21DaysofHorror
My first experience with Ahlborn was a little over 4 years ago. It was the beginning of summer & I was browsing the new release shelves at the library when I saw The Devil Crept In. Right before I left for the library I noticed a couple of Litsy posts praising this recently published book. I was in between books at the moment, so I sat down the same day & had one of the most unsettling reading experiences of my life.👇

vivastory And I loved it. If there is one author who manages to reliably unnerve me, it's Ania Ahlborn. There are scenes from several of her books that have permanently imprinted themselves. Also, a reminder that as wonderful as Halloween is for seasonal reading, any month of the year can be a great time for reading & discovering wonderful horror authors! (Pictured is one of my fave signed editions: Ahlborn's latest, signed by both Malerman AND Ahlborn!) (edited) 2y
vivastory I would like to also point out that this seemed to have been one instance when Litsy was way ahead of everyone else on bookish social media. At the time that I read Devil Crept In, I didn't hear Ahlborn mention anywhere else on social media. 2y
Nute Horror was my favorite genre for a long while. I read it all year round, but now I do usually only read it in the month of October…in its season. It‘s funny how we compartmentalize things in our lives. I‘m sold on your memory of the reading experience for this book, but that is another thing that has changed with my horror fiction reading. I don‘t like super creepy any more. I‘m still stacking!😆 2y
See All 6 Comments
vivastory @Nute I'll be interested to hear what you make of it. Her work really gets under my skin! 2y
Reggie I remember she writes a scene between the main character and his cousin playing monopoly and one is pretending the pieces are dinosaurs and the other is pretending something else but I thought it was a really nice scene of what boys do. And then there‘s the horror….😱 2y
vivastory @Reggie Right?! I just looked at her bio online & for some reason I thought she lived in New Jersey. I had no idea she lives in New Mexico. 2y

#2021Book28
This book started strong and extremely creepy. The middle slowed and got repetitive, but when the perspective switched to another character, it picked up again. I absolutely loved the ending, but I know it's one of those endings that people will hate if they want every detailed wrapped up nicely. But if you're looking for a solidly creepy book with an ending that leaves a few questions unanswered, then you should pick up this one.

Reggie I felt so bad for the kids in here. I loved how she wrote his word salad aspect of speech. She writes kids in general pretty well. 3y

Bail 😑 I really struggled with calling this one. I loved Brother, but I just can‘t eat into it. When it‘s feeling like a chore, the book and I are not meshing. I hope to revisit one day, but I‘m moving on!

Patchshank @Marmie7 I've noticed you didn't mark in The Devil Crept In. Do you want the book left unmarked? I just want to know before I start reading it, so I don't mark in it if you don't want that. 4y
Marmie7 Mark all you want! I just kind of rushed through it, I'm a nurse and work has been crazy😦 I barely have time to read- it's so hard not being able to do one of the things that usually relaxes me. 4y

I have a new favourite author! Ahlborn's writing keeps you hooked to the story. If the first and second sections are nail biting, the third section will not let you put the book down at all. Loved the author's storytelling, both from the POV of a 10 year old and a married woman. The story gives you all emotions- curiosity, shocked, scared, unsettled and plain dreadful. Best horror book Ive read in a while. Def pick this up if u love being spooked.

What a GREAT weekend read! It does capture the essence of childhood and the frustration of feeling alone in the adult world, and it's a legitimately disturbing story. Rosie's narration just sucked me in and I couldn't put it down 😱😱 It kept me guessing and it's relevant that I hadn't read 370 pages in just two days for such a long time! I would definitely like to read more from this author 😋

Drinking game: Every time a stray cat is mentioned take a shot. Unless you‘re a pro, you won‘t make it past chapter 3. Lol. This was my book for my #screamsbymail group and I feel great about it. Ania has yet to write a book where I feel a formula is involved. This hit a lot of horror points for me. Stevie finds out his best friend and cousin, Jude, is missing. Small town, dark woods, good creepy stuff. She wrote 2 young boys very believably.

I‘m calling it. Didn‘t make the whole 24 but did ok.
Tips for the next 24:

1. Don‘t schedule the paint nite your friend bought you for X-Mas on Saturday night thinking it‘ll just be a 2hr reading break when it‘ll turn into a 6 hr catchup.

2. Don‘t read a 672pg. emotionally exhausting book to start your second day. It‘ll wipe you out. Keep it light.

3. Reg, the day you swore would never come, came. You definitely prefer digital books. 😵

Cathythoughts Love the painting ! & well done with the reading 🎉. I‘m thinking there is a place for real books & a place for digital. It‘s all good. I think the next 24 in 48 is July. I‘m going to try & I will take your tips on board. 👍🏻 6y
Avanders 3. No. What?! How? Why? No but really... why? What changed? 6y
Reggie @Avanders it has gotten to the point that I‘m so lazy I‘d rather read off my phone and just swipe my thumb to turn a page than turn an actual page of a physical book. It‘s the height of supreme laziness. Also, wanna look up a word, boom, you just highlight it. Want to remember a passage, boom highlight it. Want to remember where you were boom, it opens to where you were automatically. I hate myself, lol. 😜 6y
Avanders 😆 that's awesome. 😂 It sure is easier though... except, for me, when I want to keep flipping back. Which it seems I always do... 😁 6y

Pickpick

I always enjoy Ahlborn‘s writing! This one may not be my favorite (it‘s more sad than spooky, really) - but it definitely is a fast-paced read that is hard to put down! And while I didn‘t have a picture of chicken poo to color (a favored insult in this one), it worked out with my coloring calendar being a chicken!! #Audiocoloring

DeeLew Reading this one on my Kindle! 👍🏻 6y
JoeStalksBeck @DeeLew it‘s so good! 6y
DeeLew @JoeStalksBeck I am hooked! I love her books. 😱I regret reading the Shuddering right as winter is setting in though. If I get snowed in this season I might have a major panic attack. 😂😂 6y

I'm having a little bout with depression and finding it a little hard to focus on reading. ''Tis the season for the blues. I hope it is temporary. 😔 On the bright side, my (four legged) baby is sleeping and I have some peace and quiet. I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving. Remember, if you are suffering with depression and/or anxiety, you are not alone. I really love this community and feel like it is a sort of sanctuary. 💜

JacqMac This time of year is hard. I hope you feel cheerier soon. 6y
ErikaB My ability to concentrate has been shot for the better part of the year. Audiobooks have been a huge help; I get to hear the story but I don't have to totally focus on only that. 6y
TheBookAddict 💕💕💕 I hope you feel better soon. We‘re here for you. 6y

Well, as we all know, @JoeStalksBeck is one awesome Litten. She just sent me this tagged book. She steered me in Anya‘s direction a little while ago and I love her work. This one sounds very creepy. Thank you!!! You are the best!
(Plus, earlier today the #kindledailydeal got me again😊)

😍 I've been coveting these books for so long now! Especially Stiff and the tagged one. I've been on an Ania Ahlborn kick lately where I just want to read everything she's ever written so this is amazing. The Poe bookmark is perfect and everything is just so cute. Thank you @JPeterson ! #halloweengoespostal

JPeterson You are very welcome! I hope you enjoy! Mary Roach has been one of my favorite authors for years, and Ania Ahlborn is a current favorite! 6y
