A little bookstore haul with my bookstore bestie @TracyReadsBooks ♥️♥️ We always have the best time exploring the bookstore together and having dinner out. Last night was bittersweet though- we were saying goodbye to an amazing friend and colleague. She will be missed greatly but books help. They always do.

Lisa See never disappoints. The rich cultural detail that she includes in her books add a layer of complexity to the plot that makes me feel I‘ve learned something when I‘ve finished reading. The island of Jeju, part of Korea, has a fascinating history especially the haeneyo-or women deep sea divers. The society is run by women-men take care of the kids and the home. There is sadness as well, Japanese/American colonizers did terrible things.

Samplergal Loved it. I had never heard of any of this history or about the women. One of my favorites of the year. 3w

Fun YA read about a prince that needs to select a wife out of 35 commoners that were selected in his country. It‘s a cross between a romance and dystopian novel. It didn‘t draw me in and I really don‘t care what happens in the next book which is why I rated it so-so. When my daughter was in 8th grade she LOVED it. Probably meant for that age group 😂😁

This might have been the most depressing book I have ever read. And I like dark, intense reads. But the consistently depressing mood, layered over and over bad choices and drug abuse-it was hard to find any hope lurking in this novel. The writer definitely has skill but I couldn‘t find the plot and didn‘t get invested in the main character. Between so-so and a pan ONLY because the writing wasn‘t terrible.

I truly can‘t figure out how Sally Rooney made this story so mesmerizing and magnetic. But she did. I could not put it down. I cared so much about Connell and Marianne, the main characters, who we see in a coming-of-age meets millennials love story that takes place in Ireland. I was so drawn to their story and the decisions they made that sometimes helped them and sometimes haunted them. She captures messy and real life so accurately.

batsy Lovely review! She takes the mundane and ordinary and makes it so compelling and interesting. 1mo

Loved this middle grade book about grief. Moving and sad but also humorous and matter of fact because that‘s what real life is like. I really enjoyed the “voice” of the main character and how the author captured so much realness without shock or scariness which makes this the perfect middle grade read.

This might be the most eclectic pile of books ever. Can you tell my school had a book fair this week? And that my library holds came in (always all at once🙄🤷🏻‍♀️). I‘m definitely ready for Shabbos!

This week has been trying and difficult for many reasons. But the hardest has been #yomhashoah also known as #holocaustmemorialday I‘m really feeling so emotional about it in a way I haven‘t in a while. It‘s hurting my heart. 💔🖤 (more in comments)

ElishaLovesBooks Part of it is because I‘m relatively new to #instagram and the images are just surrounding me everywhere. Part of it is because I‘m teaching The Diary of Anne Frank right now to a diverse group of 7th graders. And every year that goes by, we‘re all farther and farther removed. And I can see it in the kids. And I worry I‘m not doing enough to help them understand. 2mo
ElishaLovesBooks Teaching is such a huge responsibility. Education is where it all starts. And I hope and pray I‘m doing enough. And finally, books are where I always turn for comfort. They will always be here. There will always be more to learn. 📚 (edited) 2mo

Interesting graphic novel about a prince that feels more like himself when wearing women‘s clothes. The dressmaker knows the prince‘s secret and creates fantastical dresses for him to wear- hoping to achieve her dreams of becoming a fashion designer. I think this book is meant for kids/teens as I found the plot a bit simplistic and I didn‘t love the art. But it is a good story overall and I think kids would enjoy it.

TracyReadsBooks Definitely meant for kids—we have this in the library and it‘s very popular with students. 2mo

LOVED this middle grade book that has a parent trap vibe! This entire book is told through emails and letters mostly between Bett and Avery, 12 year old girls. They have such refreshing and lively personalities that you see through their descriptions of the world around them. Their dads (who fall in love) want them to be friends but there are many twists, turns, and growing up along the way. Everyone should have a Night Owl to their Dogfish. 🦉🐬

Wow, was this book intense. This fictional book is told from the perspective of Moonbeam, a girl who escaped alive from the takedown of the cult she had been part of since she was a small child. It jumps back and forth between Before/After the catastrophic fire and gunfight when they were rescued. It‘s excellent and a fascinating look at human behavior. What enables one person to control others so completely they will do ANYTHING for that person?

What a fabulous middle grade book about what it was like to be an immigrant in America in the 1990‘s. Mia Tang and her parents are from China. One of the jobs they are able to be hired for is managing a motel in California. Largely biographical, the writing is fresh and lovely and just right for it‘s intended age group. And Mia is spunky and determined-while also describing the harsh realities of immigrant life and poverty.

When I came to the end of this book I thought “What did I just read?” It is definitely unique and original and I could see it being made into a movie or TV show. However, I thought the world building was unwieldy and cumbersome- some of the details seemed completely unnecessary and complicated. And I felt there were some holes in the plot. I know there are some points about society in here but they‘re buried under all the problems I said above.

Taking a trip to New Orleans earlier this year really sparked my interest in the history of the city. This book is all about how the French settled the area and how they sent women from France known as the “casket girls” (because of the shape of the boxes holding their belongings) to marry the settlers. It is a pretty dense book and I think you would need to be interested in history in order to enjoy it.

My feelings about this book are complicated. The longer I‘ve been away from it, the more I like it. The main character has a powerful voice-one that needs to be heard-but sometimes his tone was too flippant for me. I think that was part of the point but I had a hard time with it. Very powerful, sad, and important book about the present day experiences of Native Americans.
