A daughter is accused of murder. Did she do it? This story is told in 3 different POVs- the father, mother, and daughter. The author really focuses on family dynamics and keeps you guessing. The suspense quietly builds while the narration at times is factual and almost sparse (you can definitely tell the author is Swedish). I really enjoyed it but it‘s not your typical sitting-on-the-edge-of-your-seat thriller.

I couldn‘t put this book down! I loved Vivian‘s voice as she tells her story about NYC during the 1940‘s and beyond. Packed full of historical details and happenings, I was fully immersed in the time period and the plot. There is just the right mix of characters and bad decisions to keep the reader hooked!

Sorry for the bad picture- I was in a rush when I took it. 🙄
I really wanted to like this one but I found it really slow. It‘s ultimately about relationships and the parts with Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis were interesting but there wasn‘t enough movement in the plot for me. I even found myself not caring about the ending which is pretty rare for me.

Anna40 Picked this up at the library yesterday but put it back on the shelf. Interesting to read your review today :) 3mo

Thought provoking and interesting graphic novel about the author‘s life/childhood. I definitely think it is labeled correctly as a tragicomic- there is a lot of tragedy, but also humor. This seems like a very honest telling of her life as it happened to her and I really respect that. It didn‘t seem exaggerated or in any way like she was trying to justify anything about her parents. I think the intended audience is teenagers and above.

This is not your average “main character makes bad decision after bad decision book.” There‘s more depth than typically found in this genre and I really liked how this author developed Queenie as a character. And of course I loved all the British details included as well. I was rooting for Queenie the whole time. 😊

I enjoyed this part family drama/part mystery. I really liked all the interesting cultural information about the Netherlands and China. Interwoven throughout the story is what it is to be an immigrant and how that can shape future generations. Great story that also made me think!

This book reminded me a lot of Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine- in a good way. I‘m pretty much a fan of all things British and loved all the Britishisms (is that a word?) that the main characters displayed. Andrew definitely has some stuff going on in his life that he needs to deal with, but there is also humor and interesting life lessons to be found throughout this books. Definitely an enjoyable and meaningful read.

So far Reese‘s book club has not disappointed me. A very strong and forthright book about love and grief and how those emotions can stay with you. Some of her sentences about grief took my breath away.

I also loved the descriptions about Sicily, both the culture and the food. And the way that Tembi Locke talks about embracing a new culture is interesting and enlightening.

Lisa See never disappoints. The rich cultural detail that she includes in her books add a layer of complexity to the plot that makes me feel I‘ve learned something when I‘ve finished reading. The island of Jeju, part of Korea, has a fascinating history especially the haeneyo-or women deep sea divers. The society is run by women-men take care of the kids and the home. There is sadness as well, Japanese/American colonizers did terrible things.

Samplergal Loved it. I had never heard of any of this history or about the women. One of my favorites of the year. 5mo

Fun YA read about a prince that needs to select a wife out of 35 commoners that were selected in his country. It‘s a cross between a romance and dystopian novel. It didn‘t draw me in and I really don‘t care what happens in the next book which is why I rated it so-so. When my daughter was in 8th grade she LOVED it. Probably meant for that age group 😂😁

This might have been the most depressing book I have ever read. And I like dark, intense reads. But the consistently depressing mood, layered over and over bad choices and drug abuse-it was hard to find any hope lurking in this novel. The writer definitely has skill but I couldn‘t find the plot and didn‘t get invested in the main character. Between so-so and a pan ONLY because the writing wasn‘t terrible.

I truly can‘t figure out how Sally Rooney made this story so mesmerizing and magnetic. But she did. I could not put it down. I cared so much about Connell and Marianne, the main characters, who we see in a coming-of-age meets millennials love story that takes place in Ireland. I was so drawn to their story and the decisions they made that sometimes helped them and sometimes haunted them. She captures messy and real life so accurately.

batsy Lovely review! She takes the mundane and ordinary and makes it so compelling and interesting. 5mo

Loved this middle grade book about grief. Moving and sad but also humorous and matter of fact because that‘s what real life is like. I really enjoyed the “voice” of the main character and how the author captured so much realness without shock or scariness which makes this the perfect middle grade read.

This might be the most eclectic pile of books ever. Can you tell my school had a book fair this week? And that my library holds came in (always all at once🙄🤷🏻‍♀️). I‘m definitely ready for Shabbos!

This week has been trying and difficult for many reasons. But the hardest has been #yomhashoah also known as #holocaustmemorialday I‘m really feeling so emotional about it in a way I haven‘t in a while. It‘s hurting my heart. 💔🖤 (more in comments)

ElishaLovesBooks Part of it is because I‘m relatively new to #instagram and the images are just surrounding me everywhere. Part of it is because I‘m teaching The Diary of Anne Frank right now to a diverse group of 7th graders. And every year that goes by, we‘re all farther and farther removed. And I can see it in the kids. And I worry I‘m not doing enough to help them understand. 6mo

Interesting graphic novel about a prince that feels more like himself when wearing women‘s clothes. The dressmaker knows the prince‘s secret and creates fantastical dresses for him to wear- hoping to achieve her dreams of becoming a fashion designer. I think this book is meant for kids/teens as I found the plot a bit simplistic and I didn‘t love the art. But it is a good story overall and I think kids would enjoy it.
