The Road to Oz | L. Frank Baum

Mehso-so

I read another Oz book today. Gathering these stories into collections like this one makes sense because they're so fast-paced (and sort of...pointless?). There was an especially fun cameo appearance by a non-Baum magical being, and the book ends with Dorothy still in Oz, which is different. #beyondtheyellowbrickroad

Dorothy again finds herself traveling through fairy lands & meets a variety of characters on her way to Princess Ozma‘s birthday party.

Baum has such a way with creating unique, beautifully absurd characters. We get to meet Polychrome, Button Bright, & the Shaggy Man! & one of my favorites Johnny Dooit. Button Bright may be silly, but it strikes me that if more people were willing to admit they didn‘t know something, we‘d be better off.🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑

BarkingMadRead I‘m sooooooo far behind! I will catch up in May! I am having surgery so I will have some down time 🤣 1d

Soscha I‘m trying to remember how far I‘ve read in the Oz odyssey. Into Ruth Plumly Thompson‘s Famous Forty. It‘s an ongoing series really, the OZ foundation ppl or similar name, canonizing further books. (edited) 1d
BookmarkTavern @Soscha I‘ve only read one or two of Thompson‘s, so I‘ve been debating continuing through. But you‘re right, it is ongoing! The most recent book recognized by Baum‘s estate according to Wikipedia was published in 2014! (edited) 1d
willaful @BookmarkTavern quite a few of the characters at the birthday party have their own Baum stories. 1d
BookmarkTavern @willaful Really? I‘ll have to do some research then! 1d

#Read2025 #SeriesLove2025 #DynamicDs

Finished this weekend for #BobWhiteBuddies there is always a chance of #Danger when Trixie Belden is around. This one was a favorite growing up probably because of the NYC setting & finally, Dan gets to go somewhere! (Granted it‘s within state lines but anyway…) I can still recite the first 2 lines of the fortune Trixie is given by a fortune teller she helps at the airport which is pretty impressive since ⬇️

DebinHawaii … I have trouble remembering where I park my car at the grocery store. “Great-headed man, with blinking eye, A shaded road, a horse‘s cry,“ after that I only remember bits & pieces of the rest of it but there is a mention of #Danger: “Where shines a beacon 'cross the sky, Beware, great danger lurks close by.” so it works for today‘s prompt. Trixie is a bit annoying in this one & does some dumb things as does the gang. ⬇️ 6d
DebinHawaii … So what do they do right after declaring they will stay together as a group to keep safe? They separate of course, giving the inept bad guys yet another chance to try to grab the statue Trixie buys. Speaking of the statue, even the adults are awfully careless with it. But still, I have much nostalgic love for this series & this book (#12 in the series), so it‘s a pick. Next up we go to Corbett‘s Island, another favorite of my youth. (edited) 6d

Another adventure through strange and random lands. Another thing that is pretty dark if you think too hard about it, which Baum clearly didn‘t intend the reader to do. The characters were fun, and while I‘m getting pretty sick of the way Baum correlates beauty with goodness/friendship, at least he subverts that a little in this book.

BookmarkTavern Yeah, the beauty = goodness always bothers me too. 6d

#Naturalitsy #HyggeHourReadathon

Spending my #HyggeHour with Trixie & the gang for #BobWhiteBuddies & enjoying this cocoa custard Easter Bunny roll as my snack with tea. I‘m excited about this one (book 12) in the series because I remember the first 2 lines of the fortune Trixie gets when the Bob-Whites go to NYC.

Not looking forward to it being Monday tomorrow although this is a no-travel week for me, so hopefully a bit calmer.
