HarperCollins is proud to present its range of best-loved, essential classics.'"Come along, Toto," she said. "We will go to the Emerald City and ask the Great Oz how to get back to Kansas again."'Swept away from her home in Kansas by a tornado, Dorothy and her dog Toto find themselves stranded in the fantastical Land of Oz. As instructed by the Good Witch of the North and the Munchkins, Dorothy sets off on the yellow brick road to try and find her way to the Emerald City and the Wizard of Oz, who can help her get home. With her companions the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman and the Cowardly Lion, Dorothy experiences an adventure full of friendship, magic and danger. A much-loved children's classic, The Wizard of Oz continues to delight readers young and old with its enchanting tale of witches, flying monkeys and silver shoes.

I love the movie so much I had a hard time getting into this, but loved the reading by Anne Hathaway so it‘s a pick. I realize people love this book and I am probably making your skin crawl. Sorry about that!

I had no idea this book was so different from the movie based on it. I have fond memories of the movie, mostly because it was a big event whenever it came on TV; my sister and I would be allowed to stay up late and we would have big bowls of popcorn and watch it with our parents. (This was in the days of TVs with dials that you had to change between the 3 channels by hand! 🤣)

I found this copy in a LFL, and it was fun reading it!

rubyslippersreads I fondly remember the days when Oz was a once-a-year event. 😊 Is that Toto in your photo? 😂 6mo
AmyG Ha! I remember those days. My brother got a TV for his Bar Mitzvah with a channel changer which was such a BIG DEAL. It will always be more fun to watch The Wizard of Oz the old way- once a year. 6mo
ChaoticMissAdventures Mary Poppins was the book that really surprised me! Julie Andrews and all her love didn't prepare me for how mean book Poppins was 😳 6mo

Today I finished reading the wizard of oz. I can‘t really complain about short reads because I usually just use them as a little in between to longer books. However, this is definitely a lot more violent than I remember. Definitely not for children, I struggled even as an adult :/
I gave this book 3 stars ✨

A very enjoyable classic, which I really enjoyed reading. Though a bit darker than expected at times, I loked the plot and all the whimsical characters we meet. I love the Land of Oz and the magic it brings, the short chapters with a lot happening was great, and I loved the sense of childhood it brings! Definitely need to watch the movie next so I can pick out all the differences!
I also really liked the morals of the story too❤

I really enjoyed this. Definitely a lot more going on in the book than the musical. And darker at times. Dorothy is a little girl, the shoes are silver not red, and many other differences (but not too far off the mark). Just a lot of really interesting creatures and good narrative. I listened to the free audiobook from Apple Books, and there‘s also a free eBook!

I don‘t think I‘ve ever read this before. The 3rd book in the series is on the best 100 fantasy list, so I figured I should get started on the first two before I read that one.

This was interesting. I can‘t believe it was written in like the 1900s. It‘s been a long time since I‘ve seen the movie, but I know it well enough to spot some of the differences.

Girl and 3 - no, 4 companions (sorry Toto) wander across magical lands generally causing mayhem & bludging off the inhabitants in their quest to find each of the 5 their heart‘s desire (guess yours is the same as Dorothy‘s, Toto).

I reread this after 2 decades & it has lost some of its magic for me. 3⭐️

As a kid, I didn‘t like the Wizard of Oz movie, so I‘ve put off rewatching it as an adult or reading the book. However, I‘ve had many people recommend the book so listening while it was currently available for free through #AudibleStories seemed perfect. I‘m glad that I did because this was a wonderful story of friendship and adventure.

#audiobook

rubyslippersreads Obviously I‘m biased, but give the movie another try. It‘s my favorite from childhood, but even as an adult, always a comfort movie, especially when I‘m looking for “someplace where there isn‘t any trouble.” 😊🌈 #theresnoplacelikehome 2y

What an adventurous read! Dorothy wants to be rescued from the strange land she happens to be in accidentally and wishes to go back home, but before that, she goes on a series of thrilling events with her friends (Lion, Scarecrow, and Tin Woodman) and her dog Toto. I absolutely loved reading this tale.

#UCFLAE3414F19 The Wizard of Oz was originally written by L. Frank Baum in 1900, however this book is a condensed version of the original. The condensation of the text and illustrations are done by Charles Santore. This Modern Fantasy book is perfect for a literature circle since it is a longer and has so many different elements for the students to discuss over the course of a couple of weeks.

Jewelwinkler This book would immerse readers into a world of fantasy and teach them the meaning of friendship as well as being confident in yourself. For this book the UDL guidelines I would follow would be 8.3 (foster collaboration and community) 9.3 (develop self-assessment and reflection) and 6.1 (guide appropriate goal- setting). 2y
Jewelwinkler The EL strategies I would use for this book would be 6 (continually monitor students comprehension) and 44 (focus on thinking skills). Since these EL strategies would be useful during a literature circle. Some more information about how literature circles work in the classroom can be found here http://www.litcircles.org/Structure/struct4.html 2y
MarkZalewski This is a classic, a good pick for sure great job! 2y

Growing up, a new toy came once a year and new clothes maybe twice yearly. However, I could pick as many books as wanted from the monthly Scholastic form so long as I read them - and I did. Years later with my Kansas-born kids, I read hundreds of books again and anew. ...But I had never read this, until now!

Tanisha_A Aw! Love this photograph! 2y
marleed @Tanisha_A I had such fun with Paisleigh, the book, and the yellow brick road. It was hard to choose which pic to use. The funniest was as she held the book. I was trying to take a photo, title out, but she kept flipping it. She wanted to look at the front cover as I snapped pics! 2y
BooknerdsLife This is such an adorable photo! 🥰❤️ 2y
marleed @BooknerdsLife Thank you. I specifically took my book to this shopping area so I could snap that pic on the yellow brick road - seemed I had to do something special since I‘m in Kansas. Lunching with my daughter and her little pal, Paisleigh was a lovely bonus! ...P‘s mom never expected this fun collection of pics! 2y

I've always loved the wizard of Oz and I really love the connections that my hometown of Holland Michigan has with L. Frank Baum 😁 Baum summered in the macatawa area of Holland Michigan and it's said that the area and the people were his inspiration for the Wizard of Oz!
