I wish it didn't take the movie coming out for me to find out about this book - I have always loved Stephen King but hadn't read him in years, other than re-reads of some of my favorites. I loved The Shining, but I think Doctor Sleep is even better. I'm still creeped out from reading it! But it was fun to read more about Danny Torrance and finish his story.

Oh my god I LOVED this book!! I loved that we not only got to go back and discuss things from The Shining but moved Dan Torrance‘s story forward. Even though it was a real door stopper the plot moved quickly and was just thrilling. And the characters were amazing! Might be my new favorite King novel! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Reminded me of "old school" King stories that I read in the 80's. The story is suspenseful and rather rapidly paced for such a long novel. The only downside is that the ending felt a bit too rushed with an epilogue that I didn't care for. 4 out of 5 stars.

The audio for this one was very good. I spent a large portion of Saturday and Sunday listening while doing housework and sometimes I‘d find myself just standing and listening. Even though I read The Shining five years ago, I didn‘t need a recap of the previous story to enjoy Doctor Sleep. This one kept me on the edge of my seat. 🌟🌟🌟🌟

Oh boy... finished the book yesterday and saw the movie tonight. Anyone else read the books and saw the movies (the shining as well)? I have feelings!
I can appreciate that to get a 600+ page book down to a 2.5hr movie things need to be condensed but I though there were some key points left out. AND to try to appease the original movie goers, things need to be changed slightly. The movie was an interesting mix b/w the books and the shining movie.

Bookish.SAM Nevertheless, the book was decent. Felt long, but in retrospect, necessary to get all the details/history/nuances in there. 1mo
ElizaMarie So. I was so excited about seeing the movie. Expectations were so high! Way too high. I do feel like it was “good“ but I left the movie a bit disappointed. I love Stephen King and everything Stephen King. But I don't know if its because I had such high expectations or if it just didn't “hit the mark“ for me. 1mo
Bookish.SAM I hear ya @ElizaMarie ... I had super high expectations too. I actually walked into the theatre saying ‘I bet this is better than the book.‘ The book took a while to get going, but as is the case with most King, for good reason. King takes a lot of time with details so you really ‘get‘ what‘s up. I will admit I was wrong, the movie was not better than the book, but I get why it went the way it did. 1mo

ElizaMarie Super curious as to what you think of the movie. Please update! 1mo
Bookish.SAM Will do @ElizaMarie! Have you read the book? I‘m going to fully nerd-out before seeing the movie and re-watch the Shining (read that book not too long ago)... as well as the documentary Room 237. 1mo
ElizaMarie Yes. Well okay I read the Shinning ages ago. (I didn't do a re-read of it), but then I was able to watch it on the big screen (the Movies did this replay thing of it last month), then I re-read Doctor Sleep (had read it when it first came out but re-read it before the movie). Then I saw the movie. So.... I have a lot of feelings about it. But I don't want to spoil anything until after you see it (so please repost after you do).. 1mo

ElizaMarie Also I haven't seen the Documentary. Do you know if its streaming anywhere? Sounds like I might enjoy it! 1mo
Bookish.SAM @ElizaMarie ok... so we are clearly on the same page when it comes to prepping for Stephen King adaptations 😂😂😂 ... I haven‘t seen the doc streaming anywhere, I picked it up from the library after a friend recommended it. 1mo
JacqMac I‘m reading it right now, too. Pre movie. I‘m thinking I should have done a reread of The Shining first. But I did watch that movie before I started. lol 1mo
Bookish.SAM @JacqMac I‘ve been working through a bunch of Stephen King this year, so fortunately hit The Shining recently. I‘m pretty sure I‘ve only seen bits of the movie, so I‘m looking forward to getting fully immersed in the life of Danny Torrance before seeing Doctor Sleep 🤓 . If you‘re into King, it looks like there are a bunch more adaptations in the works... so get ready! 😆 1mo

Saw Doctor Sleep a second time earlier today. Stellar adaptation with a whole lot of heart; something, in my opinion, that was missing from the 1980 film which I've always thought of as a great movie but a bad adaptation. I read a tweet describing what Flanagan has accomplished as a feat of cinematic diplomacy, which is a neat way to put it. The way he strung together elements from both books, especially towards the end, while ⬇️

rohit-sawant doffing his hat to Kubrick's visual vocabulary is brilliant. Speaking of hats, still can't get over how terrific and terrifying Rebecca Ferguson was. I want to reread the book at some point just so I can picture her as the character. 1mo
vivastory I'm really looking forward to seeing this. I agree about the movie, it's undoubtedly a great movie but having recently read the book I do feel like there are aspects that Kubrick missed out on. 1mo

rohit-sawant @LibrarianRyan Hope you enjoy it! 1mo
vivastory I just returned from seeing this & I'm still trying to collect my thoughts. I read The Shining & Dr Sleep back to back around Halloween this year. I thought The Shining was one of the most terrifying books I've ever read. However, I felt like some of what King was attempting in Dr Sleep was better handled in the Bill Hodges trilogy. I didn't dislike it (I gave it 4 stars on Goodreads) but it's my least favorite SK I've read pub since '00. So, 👇 1mo
vivastory the film adaptation. Mike Flanagan is without a doubt one of the greatest living SK adapters. No question about it. His ability to remain faithful to the source material (when it makes sense for the movie) is admirable. I really hate to say it, but Flanagan's ending of Dr Sleep is better than the book imo. It's strange that he rectified the liberty that Kubrick took with his adaptation by burning down the overlook & then took one of his own 1mo
rohit-sawant @vivastory Just caught up on your review of Doctor Sleep! So well put, as always 🙌🏼 The parallel to Mr Mercedes never crossed my mind. That's a terrific point. I'd loved it at the time but I'm wondering how I'd feel post a reread now with the Bill Hodges Trilogy in the front of my mind. And cool that you read them back to back. I'd done likewise when DS had hit the shelves. Haha, so true about what you said regarding taking liberties. 4w
rohit-sawant @vivastory The film's ending definitely struck me as more punchy, visceral and clean. I love the way ghost Jack Torrance makes a brief appearance in the book towards the end and was hoping for something similar in the movie but I'm very happy with direction he went in, depicting him as the new Lloyd instead and having Danny share that moment with his mom in the boiler room. That, especially in the film's universe, made a lot more sense. 4w
rohit-sawant King ought to have Flanagan on retainer for all future adaptations 😄 MK is such a master at unfurling the heart of a story and balancing it with the creepy stuff. 4w
vivastory @rohit-sawant I know that King said that Flanagan would be adapting more work in the future. It seems like I read he might be doing the Salem's Lot adaptation (or maybe that's wishful thinking) 4w
rohit-sawant @vivastory Oh, that would be awesome! 4w

As mentioned in previous posts I read The Shining last week. I talked about how terrifying it was, I didn't mention that since finishing it it has become a new favorite King. I needed to spend a few days letting it mentally simmer. My feelings about Doctor Sleep are a bit more ambiguous. I greatly appreciate that King didn't try to duplicate The Shining, which would be impossible anyways. King is a different writer reflecting on a different👇

vivastory American society. One of the most interesting things about reading the two books back to back is not only that they are good indicators of Old King vs New King, but also the way they change with cultural shifts & concerns. Strewn throughout are multiple references to King's universe (very fun) & there are a couple of twists that at first annoyed me but the more I reflected on them, I realized that they made narrative sense. Dr Sleep is not a 👇 1mo
vivastory Shining rewrite, but there are echoes from Dan(ny) Torrance's past in the pages, but this book is just as much about Abra Stone as it is about him. This is where I think my main complaint is. King wrote this seemingly in the middle of the Bill Hodges trilogy & while it is satisfying AS A SEQUEL, much of what he attempts in the relationship between Dan & Abra & the tone honestly felt like a bit of a retread from the relationships in B Hodges 👇 1mo
vivastory trilogy. I still found it enjoyable, & probably would like it quite a bit more had I not already been acquainted with Bill, Holly etc. 1mo

Ok I need to talk to the Walmart merchandiser. They had Doctor Sleep but not The Shining next to it! How do you have the second book of a sequel but not the first?? My wanted to read Dr. Sleep but didnt know it was the second book so I wouldnt let her buy it bc she hadnt read The Shining. If they wouldve had both I wouldve bought both therefore a bigger sale for Walmart. Sorry rant over.

ljuliel I doubt Walmart has a clue about the books they get in. Since this is now a movie or tv show , I think ? , that‘s probably why they‘re only selling it. Our Walmart no longer has books. They changed that area into the waiting room for pick up orders. 1mo
