A nation born of angels, vast and intricate and surrounded by danger... a woman born to servitude, unknowingly given access to the secrets of the realm...Born with a scarlet mote in her left eye, Phédre nó Delaunay is sold into indentured servitude as a child. When her bond is purchased by an enigmatic nobleman, she is trained in history, theology, politics, foreign languages, the arts of pleasure. And above all, the ability to observe, remember, and analyze. Exquisite courtesan, talented spy... and unlikely heroine. But when Phédre stumbles upon a plot that threatens her homeland, Terre d'Ange, she has no choice.Betrayed into captivity in the barbarous northland of Skaldia and accompanied only by a disdainful young warrior-priest, Phédre makes a harrowing escape and an even more harrowing journey to return to her people and deliver a warning of the impending invasion. And that proves only the first step in a quest that will take her to the edge of despair and beyond.Phédre nó Delaunay is the woman who holds the keys to her realm's deadly secrets, and whose courage will decide the very future of her world. Not since Dune has there been an epic on the scale of Kushiel's Dart-a massive tale about the violent death of an old age and the birth of a new. It is a novel of grandeur, luxuriance, sacrifice, betrayal, and deeply laid conspiracies. A world of cunning poets, deadly courtiers, deposed rulers and a besieged Queen, a warrior-priest, the Prince of Travelers, barbarian warlords, heroic traitors, and a truly Machiavellian villainess... all seen through the unflinching eyes of an unforgettable heroine.

Just in case you haven‘t read this- you can get the first in MY FAVORITE SERIES for just $1.99 today- Ms Carey says it‘s available across all ebook platforms, not just Kindle.

SW-T It‘s funny. I tried reading this like 6 or 7 times. Didn‘t take. And just when I was going to gift it to someone else, I made one last try and got swept away. LOVED it and the rest of the series 🥰 Highly recommend it.🥇 Have you read (edited) 1mo

Just wondering how many others do this? For both I have a fancy copy, one to match the rest of my series set, and a paperback to loan-only to very most trusted friends.

TheSpineView Yes. Mainly will have ebook or audio book and the physical book.😊 5mo
PippoRanito Yessss! My wallet disagrees but it stands no match against my desires. I NEED to have EVERY copy of Alice in Wonderland that I see. 😁 5mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Yes, for the Hobbit I have the original paperback I bought in HS, one with a cool cover I found at a sale, and a fancy leather bound version...plus I have the ebook version now too. 😂🤷‍♀️ (edited) 5mo

Riveted_Reader_Melissa @TheSpineView Yes, I do that too, especially if it‘s a book I loved. 5mo
TsundokuAleax I feel better about my growing collection of P&P and Kushiel books because of lovely people like you. 5mo
julesG Yep! Three copies of Harry Potter 1, three copies of The Graveyard Book, I have a few Jane Eyre copies, and there are some other books that I own at least two copies off. 5mo
sammisho I collect Pride and Prejudice, I have 40 copies! Which is nothing compared to @CrowCAH 5mo
sammisho I have a couple editions of Harry Potter too! 5mo
Librarybelle 🙋🏻‍♀️ I have many of my favorite classics in multiple editions. 5mo

TheBookHippie YES. Many. 📖📖📖📖❤️❤️❤️ 5mo
Kalalalatja I do this with Jane Austen‘s books 🙌 5mo
CrowCAH @sammisho very true 🥰 it‘s up to 172 on Litsy #PnPCovers but I got two more over Christmas which I‘ll be posting soon! Yay @TsundokuAleax and @Kalalalatja represent the Jane Austen!!! 5mo
BookishTrish Yup 5mo
Felso I have many copies of each Jane Austen‘s books. 5mo
Patchshank Yep. Some I get based on the art. For instance, I have several copies of Alice in Wonderland because I liked the different art styles. 5mo
DGRachel Oh yes. For some, I collect both US and UK covers, I have multiple editions of Persuasion, Jane Eyre, & The Three Musketeers. Oh, and I have two copies of the same edition of Les Mis-one to read the text and one to have open to the endnotes so I don‘t have to flip back and forth. And that doesn‘t count the books I have in multiple formats (print, ebook, and/or audiobook) 5mo
DGRachel Oh, and we won‘t discuss my Harry Potter “problem”. 😂 5mo
Gissy Here is one!!! I can have more than one copy because I NEED those U.K. Or limited editions! I really need them in my life! 😳📚📚📚😍❤️❤️❤️ 5mo
Daisey This is really interesting me because I‘ve never collected different editions of the same book. I have multiple copies of some for students to read, but the only book I have a few versions of is the Bible. Recently I have started getting duplicates of a few books to have another format, either ebook or audio to go with print, but I still have no plans to just collect editions. 5mo
LokiDokey In our house its the Harry Potter series. We have a hard cover, paperback, audiobook and digital copy of all 7 books. 😜 5mo
GlassAsDiamonds Yes actually...and of the Kushiels books particularly! 😂😂😂😂 (Hardcover signed, hard cover and soft cover and since those are all in storage in Oz .... another set of soft covers here!! 😂😂😂😂 I‘d have that illustrated edition as well if I could find it!). @TsundokuAleax - we‘re in good company here! 5mo
Soubhiville @GlassAsDiamonds and @TsundokuAleax I wish I‘d had the money for the Chosen illustrated when it came out 😢. I‘ll be looking for it down the road, when the price has gone way up I‘m sure! Lol. 5mo
TsundokuAleax @Soubhiville and @GlassAsDiamonds I did not know the illustrated existed until recently and it will probably be life goals now. 5mo
GlassAsDiamonds @TsundokuAleax & @Soubhiville - oh yeah. That (I didn‘t even realise they‘d done released an illustrated edition until a few months ago either! 😭😭😭😭) and Earth Begotten - goals!!!! But then, they do say it‘s good to have goals in life... 😜 Wonder who has the 26 leather bound versions???!!!?? 5mo

I was looking for a new fantasy series and this was recommended by Bookriot. Really glad I read it as it is very different than my normal style. Set in an alternative historical time perios reminiscent of Rome, it follows Phedre, a courtesan who is trained as a spy and also marked by two gods. Politics, murder, religion and history but mingled with intrigue, mystery and sex.
Can't wait to read the next ones

How to describe? Political machinations abound - a complex world where sex is not shameful, nor are prostitutes... while the main character is marked by Kushiel and enjoys pain, the sex isn‘t the focus- it IS however important to the story and treated respectfully and more-or-less tastefully

My favorite under-the-radar book (and series and author) for #24in48‘s hour 30 challenge.

I know there is a cult following, but still I‘m surprised at some fantasy lovers not knowing about these books.

I consider them under the radar because of the S&M aspect; there are some people I definitely don‘t want to discuss them with! But if you like incredibly sexy books AND epic fantasy, you need to read these now!

Mehso-so

I enjoyed the story in this book, and Phédre and Joscelin are extremely likeable characters in a huge cast of mostly likeable characters. However, not only was it a huge book, which made it intimidating to me (but in no way affected my rating) but I read the Kindle version, which had too many grammatical formatting errors, which was distracting.

Soubhiville @GypsyKat @ElishaLovesBooks if you read the blurb you can imagine the books are intense and kind of niche... I love them so much, but they‘re not for everyone. If you like the idea of a sort of sacred prostite, plus tons of political intrigue, plus fast paced adventure in a beautiful fantasy land, these are for you! They‘re all #chunkster s too! 1y

My big romance shelf, with top shelves devoted to adventure stories with romance elements.

WarpedSweetness First books to catch eye on that shelf were the Kushiel books! I love Jacqueline Carey. 2y

Went to the bookstore to get myself a couple books as an early birthday present! A new used bookstore opened up down the street from me. I picked these 2 up and my hubby actually bought them for me! 💕

My anxiety isn't as bad today. So I thought I would play catch up with the #awesomeautumnbooks from @Jess7 . Day 3 is #coverlovers These are my absolute favourite covers, probably because they're some of my favourite books. :-)

GlassAsDiamonds Agree completely!!! 😊😊😊 2y
WarpedSweetness @GlassAsDiamonds I love these books so much I want the rose marquee tattooed on my back too. Lol When I fangirl, I fangirl hard! 2y
GlassAsDiamonds Okay, gonna book geek it up here! Did it bug you that the book art didn't seem to actually depict the marque Carey described AND would you go with the one described or the cover art?? (& yep, seems perfectly rational to me!! Although painful, bones of the spine and all...😱). 2y

WarpedSweetness @GlassAsDiamonds OMG it bugged me so bad!! I actually went to the internet and started looking up better versions that matched the description. I was so mad about the book art! I would go with the description. My plan is to take the description to tattoo artist and have that person draw me up something from it. 2y
GlassAsDiamonds 🎉🎉🎉 Ha! Me too (the art and tattoos... not sure if I could stand one all the way up my spine. I discovered I was a woose after my first tattoo & might just stop there). I just never understood why, if you loved THE BOOK you'd get a random odd cover art picture tattooed on you instead of the one she actually described! You'll have to share photos once it's done 😊 2y
WarpedSweetness @GlassAsDiamonds I do not have a single tattoo yet. So I am not sure if I can stand to have it up my spine. I might have to rethink it after I get one tattoo. We shall see! And I agree! The description sounds sooo much better than what the book art looks like. Have you been to her author page? She has photos of other people's tattoos up on there. 2y
GlassAsDiamonds On bone would *hurt* especially a large one....!!! (But the pain level changes depending on body part so it's tricky!). I haven't looked at her author page in ages.... must remedy that! 😊😊😊 2y
WarpedSweetness @GlassAsDiamonds I love her author page! She has some great pictures on there. I can only image it is going to hurt. My plan is to get a couple of other tattoos first, to see how I can handle it. 2y

MrBook Welcome to Litsy! We hope you enjoy your stay with us. This place can suck you in and never let go, lol. 😊 2y
CrystalPowers Thank you! I've always used Goodreads but I do like the concept of connecting with people better on Litsy! 😃 2y

Probably about a third of the books I own have black covers so I grabbed a few that weren't shelved because I ran out of space in the lone bookcase that I own. Also, check out my socks! They're knee highs but the rest of the pic was cropped out. 😌

EchoLogical @WarpedSweetness I love Kushiel's Universe so much that I'm afraid to read anything else by her. 😵 2y
WarpedSweetness I was too when I first read the Kushiel books. But I really enjoy her other books. I think she is a fantastic writer. 2y

Okay I think I am finally grasping what is going on. So much information is being thrown at me, it's hard to keep it all straight. Luckily tor.com has a handy little guide. This is definitely the longest book I've jumped into this year. Hoping I can finish it this week. This is my first go at an #epicfantasy

SamLBooks You got this! 2y
Soubhiville I hope you love it! Some of my favorite books! 2y

If I could sneak into any book universe, it would be Terre D'Ange, I love this world and all of these books so much!

Would I be a member of the gentry? A Nightblooming Flower? One of Phedre's boys? A Shahrizai? Who knows, but if this book beam became a possibility, I'd sign up!!!

BarbaraTheBibliophage Good pick! I haven't read it, but hear so many raves. 2y
cariashley I just downloaded this, it was Tor's free book of the month. Looks very intriguing but looooong. 2y
Soubhiville @cariashley they are long, but sooooo good! I love long books though. 2y

EchoLogical Ahhhhhhhhhh! @Soubhiville I'm freaking out right now because I've found you and by "you" I mean someone else who loves this series as much as I do. ? 2y
EchoLogical @BarbaraTheBibliophage I've just discovered this question, 4 days late but SAME! I'd also want to be beamed into Terre D'Ange! 2y
Soubhiville @EchoLogical cool! I think this series is really under read. I think a lot of folks are turned off by the kinkiness, but there is So Much More than that! I absolutely love the language, the intrigue, and the characters! 2y
