Violette Toussaint is the caretaker at a cemetery in a small town in Bourgogne. Random visitors, regulars, and, most notably, her colleagues--three gravediggers, three groundskeepers, and a priest--visit her as often as possible to warm themselves in her lodge, where laughter, companionship, and occasional tears mix with the coffee that she offers them. Her daily life is lived to the rhythms of their hilarious and touching confidences. Violette's routine is disrupted one day by the arrival of a man--Julien Sole, local police chief--who insists on depositing the ashes of his recently departed mother on the gravesite of a complete stranger. It soon becomes clear that the grave Julien is looking for belongs to his mother's one-time lover, and that his mother's story of clandestine love is intertwined with Violette's own secret past. With Fresh Water for Flowers, Valrie Perrin has given readers a funny, moving, intimately told story of a woman who believes obstinately in happiness. Parrin has the rare talent of illuminating what is exceptional and poetic in what seems ordinary. A #1 best-seller in France, Fresh Water for Flowers is a delightful, atmospheric, absorbing fairy tale full of poetry, generosity, and warmth.

4✨ I read this earlier this week as a suggestion for my 12 book recommendations at the beginning of the year. @CBee Thank you for the recommendation it was fabulous. Violette is a caretaker of a cemetery. When Julien a Police Chief comes to bury his mother on a strangers grave we go into a back story of how his mother and Violette are connected from their pasts. It made me laugh, but it also pulled at my heartstrings. ⬇️

Roary47 My biggest issue was the incestuous nephew, and Violette had a lot of short comings. 😞 4mo

This book was sooooo beautiful! I didn‘t want it to end.
Not sure if this makes sense and feels odd for me to say but reading this made me want to live and love and lose and do it all over again. Oh, and also unlocked my newfound goal of being a cemetery keeper.
I‘ll definitely look into for more from this author.

A book about the life of a cemetery keeper in France. I was touched by the way she tended the graves and by the way she often performed tasks that were not in her job description. All the while, she was dealing with her own grief and hardships. It‘s a sad and mysterious story, but also wonderfully moving and hopeful. I loved it! 💐

I go up to my bedroom and open the winter wardrobe to put on a dressing gown. I have two wardrobes. One I call “winter,” the other “summer.” It has nothing to do with the seasons, but rather the circumstances. The winter wardrobe contains only classic, somber clothes, for the eyes of others. The summer wardrobe contains only light, colorful clothes meant only for me. I wear summer under winter, and I take off winter when I‘m alone.

Leftcoastzen That‘s lovely, need to get to this one. 10mo

I've decided to try to read an author in every country - partly inspired by picking up this lovely work in translation from France.

Well-plotted, this story unveils the life of a woman we meet as a cemetery keeper - there's one main timeline and a few different past timelines you're following. Briefly confusing timeline switching on audio, masterfully plotted in when details were revealed. Beautiful, sweet, sad story that I really enjoyed.

TrishB This is a beautiful read ♥️ 11mo
Tea_and_Starstuff @TrishB - it really is! While many not-peaceful things happened, I feel like peaceful isn't a bad description of what it felt like reading it. Great atmosphere - I felt transported to her cottage in the cementary and her garden filled with flowers. 11mo

I loved this - it starts slowly, and the layers of the story build and build so skilfully that before you know it you have such a deep and nuanced view of each character. It‘s sad, involves lots things that might be triggers ( the main character looks after a cemetery) but its joyful too! There‘s hope and reminders about how we live our lives, how we love and care for those closest to us and how we want to leave this life. I love this author!

This is a love story. Or a story of how love always has loss too. Love of family, life, self, friendship. It‘s heartwarming and heartbreaking. Beautifully written. I collect Europa Editions and am so happy to add this to my collection even though I chose audio for this from my #auldlangspine list from @CBee so I could also read another on the list in print. The alternating POV actually adds to the pathos. The plot twist made me gasp out loud.

CBee I love your review! I‘m so glad you enjoyed it. I just found a quote that says “grief is the price we pay for love.” It can be all-consuming sometimes but it‘s just all of the love you have for the person you‘ve lost “grief is love with nowhere to go.” ♥️ 1y

Because I‘m always late to book parties, I‘m grateful to @Deblovestoread for putting this in her #ALSpine list and to @CBee for sending it to me to make sure I would read it. 😀 It‘s a poignant read with a slow burn that veers into a thriller and then ends kind of abruptly. The chapter-header epigraphs were my favorite parts. A lovely book (but I‘d still give the nod to “A Constellation of Vital Phenomenon,” Cyd. 🤷🏻‍♀️)

#AuldLangSpine

Tamra Such a pretty pic! 🍀☘️ 1y
Amiable @Tamra Thanks! It was the best I could do in terms of “flowers” in the middle of winter in New England. 😀 1y
CBee I understand! Constellation is a hard book to beat anyway - I think this one came along at a time in my life when I really needed it, if that makes sense. Both incredible reads!! 1y
See All 10 Comments
Amiable @CBee I also wonder if (for me, at least) it‘s a function of the translation. I was quite literally halted in my tracks at various spots by the way Marra described events and people. He wrote it in English. I read it in English. Perhaps if I read this one in the original French (which I can‘t do), the writing would hit me differently? (edited) 1y
CBee @Amiable that‘s totally possible! 1y
Amiable @CBee I think that translators are often not shown the proper amount of love for what they do. Every time I'm reading a Fredrik Backman book and sobbing my eyeballs out, I think, “darn you, Backman -- and your translator!“ Because that person managed to make me cry in a whole different language than the one in which the book was written. It's a skill! I am envious of that ability. 1y
CBee @Amiable oh, I totally agree on both counts! Backman is one of my absolute favorite writers and of course all the love and respect to his translator! Everything he writes just makes so much sense to me. About life, and parenthood, and humanity, it‘s like he‘s speaking right to my soul! 1y
Leftcoastzen I‘m even later to the party, it‘s on the TBR mountain! 1y
Deblovestoread I‘m glad you liked it! 😊 1y

And this is why I never decide my favorite books of they year until January. I absolutely loved this complex & character driven story. I went in expecting it to be about a woman in a cemetery and her cheating ex, which it is but it is so much more too. Filled with grief, a bit of mystery, and a few love stories I was enamored with Violette from the jump and could have spent many hundreds more pages with her.

^^Grief of parent losing seven-year-old child, person suspended in time, imagining lost possibility, listing places mother can continue to find her daughter: in the world‘s whispers, in the sea, in the garden, in candlelight, in the sunrise, in another young girl in the street. This book does investigate healing from grief rather well, though with a tip towards suppression & sentimentality rather than rage/bargaining.

Pickpick

Domestic novel / romance / epistolary / whodunnit mashup. Two generations of romance/obsession intertwined. Violette is frustratingly passive, but forges her path by the end. Something withheld—characters indirect. Evocative, atmospheric. Largely set in a cemetery in Bourgogne, lush gardens & graves. Grief, guilt, forgiveness, finding family. Change of person/POV inconsistent. LONG—one edit more? Cheesy but lovely. Prose lulls, hypnotizing. 2018

There is a particular cemetery in Burlington, edged by Lake Champlain, that I love to walk in. These photos don‘t do justice to the beauty, serenity and peace found there. This morning I suddenly realized how much it reminded me of the home of my favorite character, Violette, from my favorite book, Fresh Water for Flowers. 💕

Kimzey Beautiful cemetery! Great book! 2y
Suet624 @Kimzey I feel a special kinship with anyone who loves this book. 😊💕 2y
Kimzey @Suet624 And I feel a special kinship with anyone who also enjoys walking in cemeteries - and who loves the book.💕😊 2y

I can see why this has been a litsy hit! #HeapsMorePraise This tender story about a French cemetery keeper is a triumph of found family and healing.

Violette grew up an orphan and married a no-good man in her teens. They work at a railroad crossing, and V is raising their daughter, the joy of her life. When a terrible tragedy strikes, he looks for answers while she turns inward. Later, she meets a man whose dead mother had an unusual request.

squirrelbrain Lovely pic! 2y
CBee This one is probably going to be the best of the year for me. It‘s just an incredible read!! 2y
Megabooks @squirrelbrain thanks! 😘 2y

Megabooks @CBee it truly was fantastic! Glad you‘re enjoying it too! 👍🏻👍🏻 2y
writerlibrarian She is currently in the French book world *the it author* we, I, as the acquisition librarian went from buying 1 copy to 3 to 6 for the new titles and… her back titles in the space of 6 months. She is along Claude Lelouch‘s partner in life and work. 2y
KristiAhlers I really enjoyed this one when I read it a few months ago. This author has a new one out now but haven‘t picked it up yet 2y
BarbaraBB @KristiAhlers I haven‘t dared yet to pick it up. My expectations are so high after this one! 2y
KristiAhlers @BarbaraBB which is pretty much why I haven‘t either! 😂 2y
CBee @Megabooks oh yep, I read it a few months ago but I still think about it 😊😊 2y

Megabooks @CBee whoops, meant to say “you enjoyed” head faster than hands! It‘s good to know Three is as good @Cinfhen I can definitely see myself picking it up in the next few months. 2y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB @KristiAhlers I‘m waiting for it to be more affordable, but I definitely plan to pick up Three! 2y
Megabooks @writerlibrarian wow! I figured that was the case re: her being the top author because it‘s been so popular abroad too. (Kind of like Sally Rooney and Ireland.) I‘m not familiar with Lelouch, so I will have to look him up. (I need to read more literature in translation!) Thanks for sharing this. 👍🏻 2y
writerlibrarian @Megabooks Lelouch is probably one of the last great French film maker from last century alive. His masterpiece is Les Uns et les Autres. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Les_Uns_et_les_Autres 2y
Megabooks @writerlibrarian ah! And I remember un homme et une femme being mentioned in the book. Makes sense. Once again, thank you! I love learning new things! 2y
CBee @Cinfhen sweet @AmyG sent Three to me as a bday gift and I can‘t WAIT to read it 😊😊 2y
AmyG It‘s not as good as Fresh Water but it‘s a good one. For me the beginning was slow but it picked up and I really enjoyed it. 2y
Cinfhen Agree @AmyG in the end I loved it but it required a lot of patience and concentration 2y

#AlphabetGame Letter F

I was planning to only choose books that I read a long time ago so I wouldn‘t be digging the books again that you‘ve already heard me rambling about!

But I can‘t ignore this one, last year‘s favorite 🤷🏻‍♀️🥰

TrishB But a great pick ❤️ 2y
CBee Agree 100% ♥️♥️♥️ 2y

1. I don‘t think it matters if your thumb is green,I think it matters whether or not you enjoy it and what it gives to you,I started this about 30 yrs ago when it was just dirt I have had many failures in some plants dying but other successes with so many taking root and thriving.
2 Fresh Water for Flowers in this story used gardening to inspire friendship&healing ❤️‍🩹
3. My library sale I picked up Gardening Hints and Tips
