I'm just going to happily assume @Tiffy_reads thinks I'm an actual mermaid and revel all weekend in such goddess-ness.🧜🏾‍♀️😍

You guys can't really see, but the blanket is in the form of a mermaid‘s fin (it's so cozy I'm dying), and of course the necklace is a beautiful bonus!! ♥️ Side note: This is my first Gaiman and first Miss Marple, so thank you so much for this. Seriously. :) #blanketandabookswap

I‘m crying. 😭😭♥️♥️

tif I just wish Reese didn't have to cast herself in EVERYTHING she produces. Couldn't she look at giving a break to some lesser known actresses? 6y
bookloo @tif This was my first thought as well!! I‘d like to know what she can do behind the scenes in directing and bringing new actors upfront versus her being the “star”. ...But I also think she would be perfect as Elena Richardson. 🤷🏾‍♀️ 6y
KarenUK @tif I guess she didn‘t cast herself in Gone Girl..... which was a good thing. But I think it‘s all about investment money... if she doesn‘t ‘star‘ it‘s harder for her to raise the cash. It‘s why Brad Pitt is in ‘12 yrs a slave‘... his company couldn‘t raise the funds without the promise of his star power. (edited) 6y

DreesReads I agree with them. I liked it better before the change. Now it seems like the same books get nominated for all the big prizes and that‘s silly and boring. 6y
readordierachel That's very interesting. Hey, if it's detracting from the diversity of the nominees/awardees, then by all means keep the US out. We have plenty of awards already. 6y
RowReads1 It doesn‘t bother me at all. It‘s what I‘m use to. Americans have only been considered for about four years now. Of course, I‘m not a writer. 6y
See All 9 Comments
GarthRanzz But they need to not just pick on the US if they‘re going to do it. I don‘t like seeing the same books win every prize but to just exclude American authors who won two of the last four years since the change is a little drastic to me. (edited) 6y
Rachbb3 @GarthRanzz I agree. 6y
alisiakae I also liked it better before the change. Last year, I think 3 of the 6 shortlist authors were American, which was disappointing. Nothing against my fellow Americans, but I always liked the Booker Prize because it introduced me to new authors I likely otherwise wouldn‘t have found, like Arundhati Roy and Keri Hulme. 6y
diovival 🤔 6y
CarolynM I think there are other prizes that are just for UK authors (Costa?) And other countries have their own, so there's no real need for the Booker to be as restricted as it was. It's a shame the Commonwealth Writer's Prize has gone, though. 6y
Becker There are so many great American books but as their Canadian neighbour, I must say we are flooded with American titles. I much prefer hearing about lesser known authors (at least to me). It is a bit disappointing to see the same big American authors over and over. Having said that...I loved Lincoln in the Bardo and was glad it won.🤷‍♀️ 6y

This. Is. BAD. Gosh where do I even start? If you‘re a Jane Eyre fan you will HATE this. It‘s a very loose interpretation (if it‘s even that at all) and it seriously reads like fan fiction. If you don‘t want to be heartbroken and read about a drunk, jealous Mr. Rochester (who reminded me of Mr. Grey), or a quick-to-fall in love “Cinderella” Jane Eyre—do NOT read this. What we all love and cherish about Jane Eyre is totally lost here. Ugh.
#24in48

Cinfhen That's a shame because the cover looked adorable! 6y
KathyWheeler I didn‘t hate it, but that‘s because I loved Jane‘s relationship with Adele. 6y
GripLitGrl Thanks for sharing. I was hoping it was good to get into graphic novels doesn't sound like a good place to start. 6y

bookloo @Cinfhen I know. 😭 My high hopes have been shattered. 💔 6y
bookloo @KathyWheeler Jane‘s adoration for Adele is the only thing I can think of that actually stayed the same. ...But I was too focused on the massacre of Mr. Rochester‘s character. 😖 6y
bookloo Yeah, sorry @GripLitGrl . I would try to recommend it if you can go in separating this from the original, but I wasn‘t joking about it being written like fan fiction. Definitely find something else to start with (Saga was my first intro to graphic novels). ♥️ 6y
batsy Oh no! I had high hopes! 6y

Question 5! ♥️ #botmbuddyread

TheBookHippie She is the youngest, they always say the closer to birth the more you can still see the other side. I'm thinking she knew the song to sing. 6y
kspenmoll Maybe in the telling of Richie‘s story, in Given coming for Mam and Richie getting sent away from Mam, she was able to sing their story & in that telling, freed up the ghosts. She seemed to have more connection between both worlds, like she was a conduit. 6y
Christine11 @TheBookHippie that‘s a really interesting idea - that her youth made her closer to it - that does make sense I think. 6y
See All 7 Comments
Valeka Kayla was the youngest and maybe the most ‘gifted‘ although she didn‘t have the vocabulary to express it in any other way but through song. She gave them peace and comfort. 6y
JaclynW @TheBookHippie I think this was it too. 6y
JaclynW This part in the story was quite moving for me. 6y
janeycanuck @Valeka I thought this as well - that she had the same gifts as Mam, the ones that seemed to skip over Leonie. 6y

Question 3!! #botmbuddyread

TheBookHippie The themes of unjust murder, prejudice, birth, who we are related to, poverty and what the past does to the future and the reverse the old "sins of the father" rhetoric ...is a ribbon throughout the story 6y
Christine11 It‘s as if everything and everyone is connected and pain and suffering is passed down from generation to generation. The past affects people for so long after tragic events take place and the dead stay with us because of this. 6y
Valeka The memories of all of the characters connect throughout the book. They experienced events differently and separately but they carry the memories with them in their daily lives and those memories impact their actions, decisions, emotions. The memories live and and continue to live through the characters. What they do, say, think keep the memories alive. 6y
See All 8 Comments
JaclynW @TheBookHippie @Christine11 @Valeka Yes! Our past experiences shape who we are and what we become. We share our experiences, memories, stories with those closest to us. Thus passing the torch. Hoping the future learns from our past. Hoping for a better future... 6y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @JaclynW yes!!! ❤️❤️ 6y
kspenmoll @TheBookHippie @Christine11 @Valeka @JaclynW Sorry life interrupted me so I am coming in late, but what you all wrote resonates with me. Its so interesting that we all can experience the same event but bring out different perspectives that impact our memories- or what we choose to remember whether consciously or unconsciously. See that in families. Memories/stories essential to the book; bodies carry them. 6y
JaclynW @kspenmoll That is so curious isn't it? Our different memories can also lead to disputes with others! Recollections can be muddy! Our emotional responses lead to very different memories. Learning to understand this about others can be helpful. Communication skills....right?! 6y
EllieDottie I think this is especially evident in JoJo as he taken on both the memory of Richie and then a little of the memory of Given 6y

Afternoon #botmbuddyreaders! ♥️📚

Questions 1,3,5, and bonus will be on my page; Questions 2 and 4 on @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks !! #botmbuddyread

TheBookHippie This is an interesting one for me. Is it to bring everything to light for the path to peace? 6y
Christine11 I‘ve been trying to figure out the titles meaning ! Maybe the Unburied part is in reference to JoJo and Leonies abilities to see the dead ? Interested to see what everyone thinks because I‘m really not sure 🤔 6y
JaclynW I've wondered about the significance of the title. There is a lot of singing in the novel. Jojo sings to calm Kayla. Kayla sings to the spirits in the trees. Ritchie sings. Singing brings people together. Singing can bring peace and calm. It's comforting. Maybe it's as @TheBookHippie said above. 6y
See All 17 Comments
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I think she is letting everyone “sing “ and be free. All of the African Americans, especially in the south, who have been wronged through racism, slavery, and any form or prejudice or other horrible cruelty... 6y
Christine11 @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Yes ! I definitely think there‘s a huge correlation in the book between singing and freedom of the soul 6y
kspenmoll On literal level, Richie heard the singing across the waters but cannot join or reach there. He sings too, and JoJo can hear him, but it is a keening; he cannot shake the prison until JoJo comes. He thinks hearing his story will unbury him. He burrows into the earth at night, unable to leave the earth. Just my thoughts; the title‘s meaning is not totally clear to me 6y
kspenmoll @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks That is a good point; often their songs had meanings their white slave owners did not understand- 6y
suvata I took to mean that I you‘re still alive, sing the praises of those who have died in the fight for equality and justice. 6y
TheBookHippie @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks sing all the atrocities so they can be heard. 6y
Valeka I may be wrong but I believe it was mentioned that Mam could hear people‘s inner songs. Maybe the title means that the unburied, those still on earth, should continue singing their songs (living their lives). 6y
jhod Also the man Richie escaped with also spoke about singing to get home (I forget his name) 6y
Sydsavvy @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks love that! I also think it means tell the stories of the dead. Feel free to sing about the atrocities. Singing, telling our stories, is ultimately the only thing that frees us. This also answers another question. Only when the stories are sung and acknowledged are the dead free to fly away. 6y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Sydsavvy yes!!!! Love this!!! ❤️❤️ 6y
EllieDottie @Sydsavvy I agree! I tied it to when Mam was talking about how some people where killed in such violent ways that even God couldn‘t watch and that is how people become ghosts (I interpreted these people to be the Unburied). I love all these comments it makes the reading experience so much richer! (edited) 6y

“I hungered for the sharp, frightening, breathtaking, almost painful excitement that the story had given me, and I vowed that as soon as I was old enough I would buy all the novels there were and read them to feed that thirst for violence that was in me, for intrigue, for plotting, for secrecy, for bloody murders.”

AmyG I read this book when I was in high school. Just picked it out of the stacks in the library. It was the first time I read a book that not only stayed with me...but changed me. (edited) 6y

bookloo @Smartypants I think he‘s becoming one of my favorite authors as well. His writing is very similar to James Baldwin, just a tad more cut open as if he‘s like you said, baring his soul out. I‘m obsessed. ♥️ 6y
AmyG Have you read Native Son? Also, brilliant. 6y
batsy Wow. 6y

Christine11 It was so tense and I was terrified that Jojo was going to get hurt. It seemed to escalate so quickly and without any real logic on the part of the officer. 6y
TheBookHippie Happens every minute of the day in this country. I have trained my kids I mentor for this so they don't get killed. It makes me so angry that none of my words are kind. I have personally a horrific view of most police officers, which I fully realize is skewed ...but I can't trust them with my kids. I recognize my own privilege and even then it isn't close to how different it is for most. (FYI there are cops, prosecuting attorneys in my family. ) 6y

NCNY I kept thinking about how Leonie had observed that Jojo was starting to look like a man even though he's still a child. I wanted to yell at the cop "He's a child!" Not that the cop would've really cared, most likely. 6y
Reecaspieces This was superbly well written. Had me on the edge of my seat. Of course, you are the delta of MS, this is a young black boy with questionable people with him. So..... 6y
AnneCecilie I was shocked and didn't really understand why they were stopped in the first place. After that things happens really fast. 6y
Suelizbeth It reminded me of the scene in THUG where the teen gets shot by the cop. I was so worried that the cop was going to shoot Jojo, again, for no reason. 6y
janeycanuck @Valeka me, too! Such amazing writing... but I will admit, I giggled a little when Kayla threw up on the cop. 6y
NCNY @janeycanuck Me too! It felt like all the other vomit scenes were building up to this one cathartic vomit. (edited) 6y
Christine11 @TheBookHippie That‘s awful that it happens so frequently. There just didn‘t seem to be any reason behind JoJo being taken out the car and it was so depressing that Leonie and Michael didn‘t really do anything to defend JoJo and protect him. 6y
JaclynW @Suelizbeth Yes! I thought of that too! If the rest of you haven't read The Hate U Give, you should read it. So good! 6y
TheBookHippie @Christine11 Because they knew they'd get shot they're conditioned to not move ... 6y
TheBookHippie @Suelizbeth yes ...excellent read!! 6y
JaclynW @TheBookHippie My husband and I often think about the people we know who have become police officers. Every one of them were the trouble makers and bullies at our schools. They were power hungry and angry individuals. And that is who is out there enforcing laws....yeah...very questionable.... 6y
Christine11 @TheBookHippie That‘s so depressing to hear - I was so, so worried JoJo was going to get shot. @JaclynW I‘ve got THUG on my TBR for a challenge this year so hoping to get to it soon but if it‘s as upsetting as this I may need to take a break first. 6y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Reecaspieces I agree... unfortunately looking at the whole picture the cop was probably freaking out a little too... I was terrified for Jojo tho. In a split second he could have been gone for reaching in his pocket... happens every day... 6y
Reecaspieces @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks and the cop...was by himself on a lonely stretch of road...and it does happen every single day 6y
TheBookHippie @JaclynW YUPPPP. Us too. My father always told us there's a very fine line between good and evil and cops walk right on the line wavering back and forth ... there's a lot of truth in that statement . 6y
JaclynW @TheBookHippie So true. Unforrunately. 6y
kspenmoll @Reecaspieces Coming to discussion late but I was so tense reading that scene, first thinking Jojo might be shot, then thinking Leonie was going to die after swallowing the drugs. And yes, just as many said here it still happens; this is a well written scene- you could also feel the policeman‘s panic. 6y
JaclynW @Christine11 It's a must read. It has difficult parts for sure. But it also has a lot of love and compassion. Many enlightening moments for me. Overall a positive read. But, yes, frustrating and disturbing. It's a call to action. 6y
Christine11 @kspenmoll Yes I think the policeman was panicking too but that just made the dangerous feeling worse as panic makes people do really terrible things. It was such an intense scene 6y
Reecaspieces @kspenmoll yes..he was outnumbered....scary situation. And the way it was written, The reader knew it too.... 6y
Christine11 @JaclynW I‘ve only heard good things about it - hoping to get to it later this month and it‘s nice to hear there is some positivity found in it 😊 6y
Reecaspieces @Christine11 @kspenmoll the policeman handled it better than expected. He also handcuffed everyone at the front end to take out their threat. Could have been so much worse. He was scared 6y
TheBookAddict @Valeka @Christine11 @Reecaspieces I agree! It had me holding my breath as well. I was angry at his treatment of Jojo and how he decided that Misty was the only “good” person in the car to trust without cuffs. It broke my heart when Kayla started crying and going to Jojo. I also understand that it could‘ve been much worse. 6y
Christine11 @TheBookAddict I know what you mean - or could have been worse - I really thought there was going to be violence. It was so stressful 6y
Reecaspieces @TheBookAddict to me this was the brilliance in the writing 6y
TheBookAddict @Christine11 yes, I thought the same. I was fearing the worst for Jojo. Even though I know that Leonie wasn‘t going to be doing so well after swallowing that bag, I let out a sigh of relief when the officer let them go and Jojo was safe. Sadly I can‘t feel much for Leonie. 6y
TheBookAddict @Reecaspieces exactly. She carried suspense with her written words, which is an amazing talent. She‘s a great author! 6y
MrsV During that whole scene, o thought I was going to come out of my skin, I was so on edge. I‘m scared to see how this whole situation effects Jojo. 6y
Christine11 @TheBookAddict I really struggle to feel much worry for Leonie as well. I know drugs have a terrible affect on a persons state of mind but with the way she treats the kids and constantly puts Micheal first, I just find it difficult to have much empathy. 6y
TheBookAddict @Christine11 exactly. I‘m glad to know that I am not alone. 6y
PandaPanda I work at a Civil Rights legal non profit so this is basically what we live every day. However, it broke my heart at that moment when the cop looked at Jojo and Misty and chose to handcuff the scared child. 6y
EchoLogical I'll have to reread this segment because I really didn't take in the officer's feelings as I read. My heart broke for poor JoJo and Kayla, his helplessness and her desperation brought me close to tears. 6y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @TheBookAddict she is phenomenal ❤️ 6y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Reecaspieces totally agree!!! We have to also remember that this cop is alone with a group of people coming from Parchman, with no backup... As with anything else there are good cops and there are bad ones... (edited) 6y
Reecaspieces @Christine11 oh I agree with that. When she puts Michael ahead of her children. I just want to Gibbs slap her 6y
TheBookHippie @Reecaspieces I want to slap sense into her myself 🤦🏽‍♀️ 6y
kspenmoll @Christine11 You are so right; panic makes people not see the situation clearly & get into reactive mode. That policemen was definitely in that place which also contributed to the dread I felt while reading. 6y
kspenmoll @Reecaspieces Felt the same way. Its so incredibly difficult with addicts- their choice of drug comes before anyone & anything. 😟 6y

Question 3! ♥️♥️♥️♥️

#botmbuddyread

janeycanuck I think there‘s some guilt there - he couldn‘t save Richie, he couldn‘t save Given... he only tells Jojo the story in little pieces, there‘s pain there and I think he‘s trying to find the parts he can talk about, maybe he‘s not ready to talk about Given yet? 6y
AnneCecilie I think he's still grieving Given, so it might be easier to talk about someone else. As a parent you will always grieve the loss of a child. 6y
Christine11 @AnneCecilie Yes I think he cannot bring himself to discuss Given at all. He perhaps associates his not being able to save Given with his helplessness in dealing with Richie 6y
See All 21 Comments
Valeka I agree with @AnneCecilie that Pop is still grieving Given and recounting stories of Richie are somewhat easier. But talking about both boys is painful for him. 6y
Suelizbeth Yes, talking about both boys is painful to him, yet he does with Jojo. Why? Is he hoping that he can save Jojo, at least? (edited) 6y
Reecaspieces @janeycanuck @AnneCecilie @Christine11 @Valeka I agree with all your statements. Pain and guilt are the motivators (edited) 6y
JaclynW @janeycanuck @AnneCecilie @Christine11 @Valeka @Suelizbeth @Reecaspieces Yes to everything you've said! Jojo is his last hope, right? 6y
Christine11 @JaclynW Yes I think so - as if he feels that he didn‘t protect Richie or Given so he needs to do everything he can to protect JoJo 6y
TheBookHippie JoJo is his last hope and it's too much to talk about all that pain and regret I'm sure... 6y
kspenmoll @janeycanuck Came in late here agree with your thinking. He cannot finish many stories- a way to keep the grief away about those he tried so hard to protect but in the end could not. I imagine he was worried sick with Jojo on this trip. 6y
JaclynW @TheBookHippie So painful! You can never turn back time. That is all a very heavy weight to carry. 6y
kspenmoll @TheBookHippie Missed discussion but I agree. I find it difficult to hear their stories myself. 💔💔 6y
TheBookHippie @kspenmoll Yes it shatters those of us who are hugely empathetic ...which is most readers I've found. ... 6y
TheBookHippie @JaclynW Yes we try to break it down to little things and smaller amounts of times and tasks the entirety is usually way to overwhelming . FYI for decades I've taught them to put the baby, toddler, child in a car seat in a safe place in your house walk outside breathe count to ten, start over..if you're still not calm call a trusted person or me..much is taught about newborns nothing about a child over that age they panic can't cope too much 6y
JaclynW @TheBookHippie Looking at life in its entirety is overwhelming for me!! For anyone I'd imagine. Even if you are educated and think you know what you're doing, you don't always. Breaking things down is always a good idea for everyone. Yes, after a certain age I bet the programs and education do go away. Unfortunately. Life is tough even under the best circumstances. 6y
TheBookHippie @JaclynW I live moment to moment and just try to do the next right thing !!! So I get it too!!! Which is what I try to convey. I mess up as a parent and I have massive privilege !! Forgiving yourself is difficult especially if you have to be constantly reminded ...of your mistakes. 6y
TheBookAddict @janeycanuck I agree! I think there‘s love, grief, guilt, and fear. He fears that just like Given and Richie he won‘t able to save Jojo either. The boys he has loved and tried to protect have died and his only hope for redemption is Jojo. Yet, he sees his grip slipping away from the boy so he tries to share bits and pieces of Richie‘s story to let Jojo know that he cares and he‘s trying, but that he may not be able to succeed in protecting him. 6y
TheBookAddict Nevertheless, it‘s still a painful retelling so he can only give it to Jojo in small doses. He hopes that Jojo will understand and maybe learn something from his stories. 6y
EchoLogical Super late to the discussion but I agree! Pop seems to want to impart his wisdom onto JoJo and prepare him for the world that took the other boys. It's hard to discuss it without spoilers, though. 😭 6y

Tips for Living | Renee Shafransky

My current reads for the week! The real surprise here is Tips for Living— A woman‘s cheating ex-husband and mistress (now wife) are shot to death in their bed. Did she do it? Typical mystery/thriller storyline, but it‘s surprisingly good. Also the narrator is hilarious and very interesting. I keep reaching for it to see what happens next! ♥️

By the way, Red Clocks is our #botmbuddyread ‘s May selection! If you can wait, join us then! ☺️

Teia Sounds like my kind of book! I'll have to put it on my tbr list!! 6y
Godmotherx5 Tips for Living sounds like the Betty Broderick case. 6y

bookloo @Godmotherx5 Well now I obviously have to research this case. If it‘s anything like this, it must be interesting. 😮 6y
Godmotherx5 I saw two books on Litsy about her. I know she was denied parole about a year ago. Forsaking All Others is an older book. The “newest” release is just called “Betty Broderick”. 6y
TheBookHippie I remember when this happened!!! I've read all the books watched the miniseries and the movie 😂😂📖fascinating story. 6y

TheBookHippie As a mentor I see kids like this daily. They take care of their siblings, they see their parents in prison, they understand the drug world. I actually had a child named JoJo for two years when he was 6 and 7. If anything I hope this helps people gain insight that although this is a story, it's more real than one would believe. For me reading it has been interesting. 6y
Mrs_Black @TheBookHippie I was just thinking this. I teach 13-14 year olds and many have parents in relationships that are similar. Many are also cared for by grandparents. Meth is also a big problem in the Midwest, so this could be the story of many of my students. 6y
TheBookHippie @Mrs_Black I'm Midwest too. I mentor K4-12 so I see alll the aspects of this story. 6y
See All 49 Comments
Mrs_Black I‘m interested in how Mam‘s story will play out. I know we can see where it is going, but I wonder the effect it will have on all the other characters. 6y
Christine11 @TheBookHippie @Mrs_Black That is so sad to hear ! You almost want to believe this is quite an unusual life but it‘s not - drugs can cause so many ripple effects on the whole family. I recently watched a documentary about the drug problems parts of America are coping with and drugs are such a huge problem here in the UK as well. It just showed how sad life can be for the kids affected by this. 6y
TheBookHippie I'm interested to see what the relationship is that Leonie fights for ...is there one?? 6y
TheBookHippie @Christine11 Sad and it always amazes me how resilient the kids are. Since I've been mentoring for decades I've seen kids in this situation grow up and have kids...it's interesting the ones who break the cycle . 6y
Mrs_Black I‘m also interested to see how the magical elements play out. What do you take away from Jojo‘s ability to “hear” animals? 6y
Christine11 @TheBookHippie I‘m really hoping that‘s the case here - that JoJo and his sister get a happy ending. It‘s nice to hear that some do break the cycle. 6y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks It broke my heart on a Jojo‘s Birthday and he couldn‘t even blow out the candles on his cake because Leonie had to go answer the phone! Leonie knows how disappointed he was... Also when she stopped at the gas station and he was so thirsty and she wouldn‘t buy him a Coke.💔💔 (edited) 6y
Christine11 @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I know !! That broke my heart too ! It‘s not even like she‘s always particularly cruel to him - she just started doesn‘t notice him or think he‘s more important than Michael or whatever else is happening. 6y
TheBookHippie @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks This is how I knew I've been in it awhile ...that was normal to read/hear for me ....oye breaks my heart everytime ...I've thrown up after a morning of tutoring before...because it's just soooo many kids.. 6y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Christine11 and poor Kayla!!! 💔💔💔 6y
JaclynW @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Christine11 I felt the same! SO sad! I think she's very self-centered and can't see past that. Her grief, the drugs, don't help that. She's self-medicating. @TheBookHippie That is a good question. You would think that relationship would be her own kids. Doesn't appear to be so, yet. 6y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Why do you guys think that Pop tells Jojo the story of Ritchie only in fragments? @TheBookHippie @Christine11 @Mrs_Black @bookloo anyone else?? @kspenmoll (edited) 6y
kspenmoll @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks 💔💔 yes & he stole saltines & juice from that crazy drug house full of food for he & Kayla. 6y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @kspenmoll I know!!! 😭😭😭😭😭 6y
kspenmoll Worries me if what is to come... love this book & discussion. (edited) 6y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @kspenmoll and he sleeps on the floor beside her every night!! 😭😢😭😢 6y
kspenmoll @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I am thinking he has horrors so he can never get to end of stories- 6y
JaclynW @TheBookHippie @Mrs_Black What a job you have! Thank you! Why is it that this is becoming more prevelent in our society? I'd love to hear your thoughts. My husband and I have similar discussions. We wonder if it's our society's downfall from not truly experiencing emotions (good & bad), not embracing/learning from mistakes, not living our own life (doing things for others), lack of real guidance and support...There is probably more too. Layers! 6y
Christine11 @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @JaclynW I know! Kayla obviously sees Jojo as her protector and not her mum which is upsetting ! I‘m not sure exactly why pop only tells Ritchie‘s story in fragments - maybe because he finds it painful to talk about or because he feels he let Ritchie down ? 6y
kspenmoll @TheBookHippie @Mrs_Black And the students I have like this take a long tome to trust- once they do, they will tell you their stories. 6y
TheBookHippie @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks It's all he can take...or he wants him to soak it in.. 6y
Christine11 @kspenmoll I know how you feel - I‘m worried about what is still to come ! 6y
TheBookHippie @kspenmoll Yup. I hear allll the stories ..I'm in year 30. Woe. 6y
JaclynW @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Maybe the story is in fragments because it is too painful to tell? Or to keep his interest? When someone leaves you hanging, you always want more. Or maybe he's testing Jojo's ability to handle such a story? I'm not certain. It's interesting though. I want to say, "Out with it already!!" 6y
Mrs_Black @JaclynW I think part of the problem is the cyclic nature of addiction and abuse. It increases exponentially each generation, especially as resources for help are reduced. Not only for addiction and abuse, but mental health as well. When something is going through a number of generations that is all kids see as they grow up. At least Jojo has Pop and Mam as role models. 6y
TheBookHippie @JaclynW It's been like this for as long as I can remember, however, recently it was getting better. Since the election it's so much worse because there's no hope and their safety is threatened ..I think we hear about it more now and that makes it seem more prevalent. 6y
TheBookHippie @Mrs_Black Currently I am seeing third generation of the cycle come through a lot...but some it's so far back I'm not sure where it started . I'm a firm believer in one good role model, still. 6y
JaclynW @Mrs_Black @TheBookHippie It's terribly sad. It makes me feel helpless. The problem seems bigger than me. I can see how the cyclical nature gives no hope, no opportunity. In your opinion, what is a good resource or way to help? (And yes, since the election, we all seem to be in a downward spiral of sorts.) 6y
TheBookHippie @JaclynW In all reality I tell people to walk into an unperforming poorer public school and drop off socks hats mittens coats boots etc- books for sure- friend a teacher ask them what they need - any youth center- boys and girls club, nuns 🤣 seriously we have to start with the young. Every single act matters. I have proof of that in older kids and young adults. Warm mittens and a scarf is the world to a kid. As is a book. 6y
Mrs_Black @TheBookHippie I agree. Thank you for being a mentor! We need them for so many kids. I mentor a student in my school. I always feel like I‘m not doing enough, but it doesn‘t take much to have an impact. 6y
Mrs_Black @JaclynW I agree with @TheBookHippie that books and clothes are a good way to help. See if schools nearby have mentoring programs. 6y
TheBookAddict @TheBookHippie @Mrs_Black it is sad to say that I see it as well even though I work with preschoolers (ages 3-5). We have kids who know that either both or one of their parents is in jail or they have passed. Some just don‘t want to go home at the end of the day. It‘s heart breaking and it takes a toll on us. 6y
TheBookAddict @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks it also broke my heart to have to beg and steal to have something for him and his sister to drink and eat when his mother is right there with them. It‘s just terrible, I honestly can‘t understand how she‘s ok with that. And I have also wondered why Pop doesn‘t share Richie‘s whole story at once. I also think that it may be because while he wants to tell it to Jojo so he can learn from it, it‘s painful for him to share it. 6y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @TheBookAddict she obviously has no heart... I agree, he‘s wanting Jojo to learn from it... I love Pop ❤️ 6y
JaclynW @Mrs_Black @TheBookHippie When I taught school, I taught in an inner city school and saw what you are talking about. The first school that my own kids went to was a bit like this as well. Now that I don't teach, I volunteer in 2 different schools. I do hope that I can be a role model. Continued ⬇️⬇️⬇️ 6y
TheBookAddict @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks yes, she doesn‘t. Not for them at least. I love Pop as well, he seems like he has a big heart even if he doesn‘t know how to verbalize his love. I feel that I will soon be shedding big tears not just for the kids, but for Pop as well. 6y
JaclynW Thanks for your suggestions. I do some of that already, I've wondered though if it was just a band-aid and naive approach. If it really helps and makes a difference that's good to know. When you donate, you don't often get feedback. I will keep volunteering and making donations in schools where it's needed. 👍 @Mrs_Black @TheBookHippie 6y
JaclynW @TheBookAddict How sad! That's how it was when I taught Kindergarten in an inner city school. I wanted to take all of my students home with me. 6y
JaclynW @TheBookAddict I think you are right. Big tears coming....😢😢😢 6y
TheBookAddict @JaclynW yeah I know the feeling. 6y
TheBookHippie @JaclynW I say that daily I just want to get a big house and take care of them all... 6y
TheBookHippie @JaclynW I had a child hang on to a pair of mittens for proof there were good people out in the world there were new tags still on them ...so she knew they were "really bought" she's 25 now -still has them ... I keep that in my mind along with a kid who told me I gave him the only birthday card he ever received....went to the army with it. 6y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @TheBookHippie just breaks my heart 💔 6y
kspenmoll @TheBookHippie I have a friend who started collecting shoes for homeless- a policeman in city joined, then a shoe store, podiatrist - now they have bins at local places like starbucks for shoes- huge difference to all these families to have warm feet, good shoes. It can sometimes truly be one person. 6y
JaclynW @TheBookHippie Wow! Those are great stories! Thanks for sharing! 6y
JaclynW @kspenmoll That's a heartwarming story too. That's great that the community stepped forward to help! I'm glad there are still good people in our world. 6y

Here‘s Question 3! ♥️

#botmbuddyread

Mrs_Black I think these could be interpreted in many ways. As the trip plays out it may give more insight. I think the feather to help him fly away from trouble, the tooth to help him defend and nourish himself, and the rock to keep him tough. 6y
Suelizbeth I don‘t know what they symbolize, but it‘s obviously for protection against bad things/evil beings. 6y
Valeka I am with ya, @Mrs_Black! That is my interpretation as well at this point in the book. 6y
See All 16 Comments
TheBookHippie @Mrs_Black I assume the same and all of it to protect and ward off evil. Security . 6y
kspenmoll A rock to keep him grounded to earth & home; reminder he is strong; also reminds me of a passage where he talks about life being like a river. feather so he can fly away like birds- freedom. The tooth to give him ability to fight if necessary on many levels ( as simple as taking saltines & juice for his sister & he) for survival. All essence of home, Mam, Pop. Pop kept one close & was still alive- Their gift of protection for Jojo. 6y
Christine11 I‘m not sure yet ! I like what you think @Mrs_Black and I think they are definitely about protecting Jojo from something. Maybe because he felt he didn‘t protect Given ? 6y
kspenmoll @Mrs_Black Well stated! 😀 6y
TheBookAddict @kspenmoll I agree! Since Pop couldn‘t prevent Leonie from taking them he needed to protect them somehow. He knows that Kayla and Jojo‘s only hope of returning home safely is Jojo. He needs to protect them in anyway possible since he wasn‘t able to protect Given. 6y
kspenmoll @TheBookAddict your point about not being able to protect Given is such a sorrow in their lives; Pop wants to do all can for Jojo. 6y
JaclynW Protection for sure. I like all of your interpretations. I can't wait to see how they come into play. 6y
JaclynW @Christine11 @TheBookAddict @kspenmoll Not being able to protect your own child is definitely a real fear for all parents/caregivers. I just can't imagine how difficult it would be to lose a child. Such a sorrow that stays with you every day for the rest of your life. I think Pop sees hope/potential in Jojo. 6y
Christine11 @JaclynW Definitely! And pop knows exactly how it feels to lose a child so is even more fearful. I think he sees himself as Jojo‘s father figure and protector and the kids are probably one of his reasons for continuing to have hope when his wife is so ill and his daughter is in a downward spiral. It‘s really sad. 6y
JaclynW @Christine11 Yes! He is trying to teach and protect those kids! So many grandparents in our country are doing this. It is definitely sad.😢 6y
Christine11 @JaclynW I know - it‘s such a shame that they are all having to still parent when they should just be able to enjoy being grandparents ☹️ 6y
Reecaspieces This group is just amazing. I love all your answers. To me they are spot on. @TheBookAddict I agree with your statement about pop. He was doing his best to protect! 6y
Kamisha @Mrs_Black I think that‘s a great interpretation of what the items could be! Definitely I think Pop is trying to protect him in some way. I really like the way this novel weaves elements of the old world beliefs and things like gris-gris bags and plant lore into the fabric of everyday life for this family. 6y

Afternoon readers! Questions 1,3, and bonus will be on my page!

Here is the 1st. #botmbuddyread

Mrs_Black This is my first discussion. Do we respond here or in a separate post? 6y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Mrs_Black you respond here!! ☺️ 6y
See All 19 Comments
kspenmoll First the sentences had me wondering who was to die. Felt sobering, with some anxiety thrown in. Also revealed that JoJo was contemplative, self reflective. All that in two sentences, at least for me. Writing felt simple, direct, like he thinks. Had no idea he was so young until a few more sentences in. 6y
TheBookHippie I think he senses life/death clearly. Usually when you have more responsibilities than having a childhood to be a child, you do. It sets us up to see that the weight of his life has aged him and taken away his childlike innocence. Just my thoughts ... (edited) 6y
Mrs_Black I think having the different POVs makes Jojo‘s thoughts more important because we see how his upbringing has influenced him in contrast to his mother. He is on the edge of growing up, and seems to have surpassed his mother in many ways. He has had to deal with difficult things already, and seems to think he is prepared for the future, but as we see in the slaughtering scene, he isn‘t quite there yet. Which doesn‘t mean it is a bad thing. 6y
Christine11 Yes, the writing definitely felt really direct. It took me a little while to get used to the style - everything written the way Jojo is thinking and speaking. It set quite a sad tone to start off with I think - but very effective! 6y
kspenmoll @TheBookHippie I like your idea of setting us up to see the weight of his life, losing his childhood innocence already. That became so apparent later, as well as his lack of control over getting Michael due to his age, role as son. 6y
Suelizbeth @TheBookHippie I agree. He takes care of his sister as though she were his own child. He is concerned with being perceived as mature enough to handle anything that comes his way. 6y
kspenmoll @Mrs_Black Yes in slaughtering scene felt his youth & also his deep desire to be who he thought Pop wanted him to be. Love there in the way Pop handled. Jojo when he ran out & vomited. 6y
Christine11 @Suelizbeth I think you‘re right - he wants to be seen as mature and like he can take care of his family. He looks to Pop almost to show him how and to measure if he‘s doing it well enough. 6y
Valeka Jojo isn‘t a typical kid. He‘s had a difficult upbringing with lots of responsibilities thrust on him. Life and death surround him living with his grandparents, especially with Mam dying of cancer. 6y
Mrs_Black @kspenmoll Me too. I really love Pop. 6y
Mrs_Black @kspenmoll I like the contrast between the amount of responsibility he has versus the amount of control he has. 6y
PandaPanda @kspenmoll I think definitely it has a lot to do with Pop. He thinks Pop would be like that about death and therefore he wants to be too. 6y
Christine11 @PandaPanda Yes - he definitely models himself on pop - probably because his father is absent/unreliable and he sees pop as the patriarch of the family 6y
TheBookHippie @kspenmoll The lack of control and all that's on his shoulders is so appalling ...ages him I think but doesn't give him the right experience to age with. 6y
JaclynW It was such a powerful (and sad) opening. I agree with @Mrs_Black that his upbringing is a strong influence. And yes, @kspenmoll , I too was shocked at his real age. He does seem wise beyond his years. @TheBookHippie Having more responsibilities makes you grow up fast. No carefree childhood for Jojo. Innocence lost. I love that Jojo has Pop. Where would he be without him? 6y

“When the silence and the aloneness press down and around me, crushing me, carving through me like ice, I need to speak aloud sometimes, if only for proof of life.” I feel ya, Eleanor. ♥️

Question for people who have read this: Are we the readers supposed to like Eleanor? I understand something bad has happened in her life (don‘t know what yet), but she‘s so unlikeable to me. Snobbish. Unaware of her rudeness. That sort of thing. 😮 #newyearreads

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks This breaks my heart!! I liked her the way I like Sheldon on The Big Bang Theory and Ove... I don‘t think she means to be rude and snobbish, it‘s just the way she is... She‘s just 🤔🤔 peculiar... And when you read more your heart will 💔 (edited) 6y
L_auren I liked her but it‘s okay not to. She knows people dislike her and she‘s totally fine with it so it‘s not like she‘s unaware... therefore it‘s okay to dislike her I guess? Ha 6y
Pamwurtzler She‘s really socially awkward, but she grows on you. See how you feel when you‘ve read more. 6y
See All 18 Comments
Andrew65 I think she does grow on you.. 6y
bookloo @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Haha! Well when you put it in Sheldon terms, I understand. :p We‘ll see! ♥️ 6y
bookloo @L_auren Haha, that makes sense. I‘m trying here! I guess I need to know more about her. ♥️ 6y
bookloo @Pamwurtzler I‘ve read a bit more and saw that she loved Jane Eyre which makes us practically sisters. 😜 So I guess she‘s growing on me. ♥️ 6y

Pamwurtzler 😂 6y
Richryan52 @bookloo Thanks for the like. happy New Year and please consider voting 6y
KathyWheeler I just finished it and had similar feelings toward Eleanor for at least half of the book. It‘s worth pushing through those feelings to learn what she‘s all about and why she is the way she is. 6y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @bookloo lol!!! 🤣😂 I really need to read that!!! 6y
bookloo @KathyWheeler Just read your review for this book! Thank you so much for telling me. Your review said it all, you found her behavior ridiculous at times (I‘m definitely finding it myself), but it was worth pushing through. Following your advice! ♥️ 6y
AceOnRoam I didn't like her at the beginning. In fact I thought it was going to be a shallow book about not much…. Read on!!!! 6y
KathyWheeler @bookloo I‘m so glad my review helped. 😊 6y
bookloo @AceOnRoam Thank you! I feel like if I read “Mummy says this, Mummy says that” one more time I‘m going to scream...but I‘ll keep on reading! 😜😩 6y

Pickpick

I have fallen in love with four writers this year. Murakami for his desire, Emily Ruskovich for her empathy, Zinzi Clemmons for being that big sister, and now Myriam Gurba for being that girl whose honesty and witticism has left me speechless.
A memoir that starts with a rape/murder that connects both the victim and Gurba in such an unspeakable and horrifying way, yet Gurba was able to write this with humor and the barest of skins. I loved it. ♥️

mrozzz I‘m sold. 6y

I loved everything about this. The research, the arsonist(s), the beauty of Eastern Shore, and of course the author. Monica Hesse did such a fantastic job at shining the light on the people most important instead of inserting herself (*cough Stranger in the Woods; Patient H.M.cough*), and she was able to keep interested/obsessed with this case and every case like it. I can safely say I‘m a new and huge fan of the true crime genre. ♥️ #botmbuddyread
