I just finished this book. My husband said, “What are you doing?” I said, “I‘m hugging this book because it was so good and beautiful”. And it is - it‘s good and beautiful.

"There's something about first love, isn't there? She said. It's untouchable to those who played no part in it. But it's the measure of all that follows, she said." Whew. This book. It's a punch to the gut and a squeeze of the heart. It's lovely. It's heartbreak. It's both small and big at the same time.

A tenderly written story of love, loss, friendship and acceptance. Sarah Winman has a way of writing that gently rocks you over the sadness and hugs you with the happiness. One small criticism; I was confused as to which character was narrating at the start of a lot of the chapters. Don‘t let that put you off though as all quickly becomes clear. If you liked The Heart‘s Invisible Furies, you‘ll almost certainly enjoy this book ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Total #blameitonlitsy. Was a gift from Litten, as it was on my Litsy TBR, on another Litten's recommendation. Tbh I didnt really know what it was about and forget why I had stacked it, but it was good. A sadder story than I was in the mood for, but not overbearing in sorrow. A story of life, love & loss.

bookseller_cate I loved Sarah Winman‘s “A Year of Marvellous Ways”. Have actually read it twice. I even (#booksellerperk) got to have dinner with her and several other lovely women when she came through Calgary a few years ago. I really need to bump Tin Man up the TBR list. 📚 6mo

Happy new year! I‘m excited to have some reading time today - and here are two of my #newyearwhodis picks, recommended by @LapReader (plus The Bus on Thursday by Shirley Barrett which is on hold at the library, so hopefully I‘ll get that one in soon). I‘m starting with Tin Man. 📚

I‘m currently slogging through Bring up the Bodies (@cathythoughts) and there‘s no way I‘ll finish by Monday, so here is my #18in2018. I‘ve had such a good reading year, mainly thanks to Litsy. I‘ve tried new authors, some authors I‘d been scared of and a few of those #booksthatwinprizes that I‘ve always avoided. My top five are tagged below. Can‘t wait for 2019!

My Favorite Books of 2018.

4. Tin Man by Sarah Winman. One day I am going to have to investigate why I love books that are this devastatingly sad so much. This is the saddest book I‘ve read since A Little Life and it is just so beautiful. Thank you, thank you, thank you. #BestBooks2018

At first I didn‘t enjoy this book. The writing style was a bit funny and I didn‘t really engage with the story very easily as it jumped around. I also didn‘t really enjoy Ellis in the beginning. And then when Dora died I had to put it down for a couple of days because it was was too hard after recently losing my own mother to cancer. When I picked it up again, I fell in love with Michael and his story. I am bereft now I am finished.

Reggie Ughh, this book, 2 summers ago and I still feel 😭😭😭when I think of Michael. 6mo

I‘ve seen a ton of reviews remarking on the love, the lost love, and the regret in here and yes to all of these things. But what I mainly picked up on is the grief and the loss felt by all three of these characters. It was quite painful to read but also so exquisitely written that I‘m glad for this experience.

I‘ve almost bought this book a few times,so when the audio came available at my library I snagged it. My intention was to listen a bit to see if I‘d be interested in the book. Well,I ended up listening to the whole book. It‘s short, and poignant , so touching and sad all at once. As my kids would say “all the feels” with this one 📚💕

For me, finishing 6 books in September was pretty good!

1. Zoo City Lauren Beukes
2. Tin Man Sarah Winman
3. The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet Becky Chambers
4. The Heart's Invisible Furies John Boyne
5. Turtles All the Way Down John Green
6. Die Uitgespoeldes Dalene Matthee

So many of these were really good or at least 4 stars! It helped that 3 were short books, but still 😊

This novel is at times both heartbreaking and lovely. There were so many moments when the beautiful writing just made me sort of hold my breath. However, I was a little confused at times because of the jumping around in the timeline. I think I would have appreciated the style more if it was told in a more linear fashion. Also, it was so short! I would have loved to have spent way more time in this world. #NetGalley ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“Winman has crafted something of a small miracle here. Though the novel clocks in at a only little over 200 pages, so much is contained in it — it‘s like a literary version of a Tardis. It seems impossible that it all fits, yet the slow build of emotion and the cascade of quiet, well-earned tears are testament to how rich this meditation on love, art, loss and redemption truly is.” — a rave review from the New York Times Book Review for TIN MAN!
