The Nix
The Nix | Nathan Hill
From the suburban Midwest to New York City to the 1968 riots that rocked Chicago and beyond, The Nix exploreswith sharp humor and a fierce tendernessthe resilience of love and home, even in times of radical change.
Its 2011, and Samuel Andresen-Andersoncollege professor, stalled writerhas a Nix of his own: his mother, Faye. He hasnt seen her in decades, not since she abandoned the family when he was a boy. Now shes re-appeared, having committed an absurd crime that electrifies the nightly news, beguiles the internet, and inflames a politically divided country. The media paints Faye as a radical hippie with a sordid past, but as far as Samuel knows, his mother was an ordinary girl who married her high-school sweetheart. Which version of his mother is true? Two facts are certain: shes facing some serious charges, and she needs Samuels help.
To save her, Samuel will have to embark on his own journey, uncovering long-buried secrets about the woman he thought he knew, secrets that stretch across generations and have their origin all the way back in Norway, home of the mysterious Nix. As he does so, Samuel will confront not only Fayes losses but also his own lost love, and will relearn everything he thought he knew about his mother, and himself.

I started listening to audiobooks three years ago when I gained a commute. This is the best I could narrow down the 371 titles that have joined my #audible library in those years!

#top10ofthedecade (kinda 😉😉) #audiobookedition

And yes, The Nix is the top and absolutely worth 21 hours!!

Cinfhen You were definitely a pioneer in the audio realm🙌🏻excited for this list!!!!!!! 2h
Cinfhen Did u see Audible is having a sale???? Going to check out some of your titles 2h
Megabooks @Cinfhen I did! I picked up Jami Attenberg‘s newest because it‘s narrated by one of my favs. 👍🏻👍🏻 2h
See All 18 Comments
Cinfhen Bottle of lies almost made my list but the author‘s narration was so annoying 😜but the story was UH.MAY.ZING 2h
Cinfhen @Megabooks oh, I wanted to read that one!! 2h
Megabooks @Cinfhen huh? I liked both, but it almost made my nonfiction best of! Honestly most of my favorite audiobooks are done by a professional VO artist. I usually don‘t like ones read by the author. The author-read ones on here like Heavy and Beauty Queens are the exception. 2h
Megabooks @Cinfhen honestly you can‘t go wrong with Therese Plummer! She‘s the reason that this book is one there. She made it so funny! 2h
Cinfhen Just bought the Attenberg #BlameMeg 😘 1h
Cinfhen I added all the others! 1h
Cinfhen I‘m gonna see if Hoopla or my library has any of them first 1h
Cinfhen One click is dangerous 1h
Cinfhen Woohoo, Hoopla had 3 but of course I‘m out of loans for the month 😝😝😝 (edited) 1h
Graywacke Fantastic amount of audio for only 3 years. Great list. (edited) 1h
Megabooks @Cinfhen lol! I haven‘t even started it yet!! But Therese is really good! 1h
Megabooks @Cinfhen I wish I could lend you some of my hoopla loans because I never use them all!! Anyway, I hope this doesn‘t change your opinion on my taste in audiobooks!! 🤪😘 1h
Megabooks @Graywacke Thanks! I didn‘t include overdrive and hoopla. With all three, I‘m well over three months of total listening time! I never listen to music anymore, and I used to live alone, so I would listen a lot!! 59m
Cinfhen We‘re about to find out 😘I was able to download this one from my “local” library (7,000 miles away) 👙👑 57m
Megabooks @Cinfhen I bought it after listening a couple of times from my library, which is not 7k miles away 😂😂 8m

Day 6 of #adventrecommends ... a favorite from 2019.

Yes. It‘s a chunkster (737 pgs.) It‘s also a smart novel with big ideas that packs a hell of a punch. A sprawling puzzle that goes back and forth in time, it delves into family secrets. It touches on relationships, trust & loyalty with friends, lovers, parents & children. It‘s also a satire of today‘s politics and media with timely observations and insights captured in a clever way.

Megabooks One of my all time favorites! Fantastic audiobook! 6d

this is like infinite jest minus the creativity and the worldbuilding and pretty much everything that made infinite jest so powerful except the pretension and the really bad attempt at being like Pynchon. pic related its what girls think when you tell them the plot of this boring novel

This is one of the best books I have ever read. Written about the protest in the late sixties. You see the sides of the police, politics and “hippies.” The main character dives into his mom‘s past who abandoned her family when he was young. The twist and turns are so entertaining. The length intimidated me because I tend to get bored with long books, but it was such a fast read!

I enjoyed this satire on academia, publishing, U.S. politics, gaming etc. It is a little overstuffed maybe but ultimately satisfying. The prompt #sitdown made me think of it because the protagonist‘s mother was photographed at a “sit in” in the 70s which has a lot to do with the plot. Convoluted but it‘s the best I can do.😅 #RedroseSeptember

arlenefinnigan I do love a good sit in ✊ 3mo

21 hours on audio seemed like it might be too long but the whole thing was an absolute delight to listen to. It‘s a sprawling narrative that spans decades. It‘s got plot but mostly it‘s about the characters; family, friendships, secrets, the choices they make that effect each other. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

What a great story! This book sprawls a timespan of 40 or so years as the main character, Samuel Andresen-Anderson goes on a voyage of discovery about his mother, grandfather and himself. This book is packed full of interesting and amusing characters, and the writing is wordy but enchanting. i listened to the audio version of this book narrated by awarding-winning narrator Ari Fliakos who did a stunning job of bringing the characters to life.

Good Lord is this #audiobook is beautiful! It‘s probably my all-time favorite fiction audiobook, and definitely in my top five favorite books period. I got tingles at the end. @Cinfhen definitely listen to a sample! @8little_paws we were so in sync in 2016 👯‍♀️ I have All Things Cease to Appear checked out as well! 😊 Yes, this book is a chunkster, but it is sooooo good! 5🌟

Some mandalas and stained glass I colored while listening!

Cinfhen Love the coloring 💜 I listened to a sample via Audible but it‘s 26 hours😱I don‘t think I can last that long. I think im gonna go print 8mo

One of my favorite #audiobooks, the MC, Samuel, is in what I consider my tiny Gen Y, born between 1978 and 1982. I love when I find books that cover #mygeneration that tightly.

Plus this book has a lot of other generations, too. It‘s one of the few books I can easily say is “deftly woven.” #anglophileapril

Cinfhen Still on my TBR!!! I‘ve seen mixed reviews so I keep putting it off... plus #pagecountphobia 8mo
Cinfhen How many hours was the audio???? I think too many for me. My mind starts to wander 🙄 8mo
Megabooks @Cinfhen 22 hoursish, but it is really engaging. I usually don‘t listen to chunkster audiobooks (I try to keep it 12 hours or less. Come to think of it, I rarely read chunksters period. 😉🤣) but this is totally worth the time. It‘s one of my favorite books, like of all time. Srsly. 8mo

Megabooks @Cinfhen sounds like a good plan! 👍🏻 Ari Flakos does a great job. He‘s one of the few men who can get women‘s voices right. Plus, I think he really captures the mix of Samuel‘s desperation yet indifference. 8mo
Megabooks @Cinfhen Pwnage is probably my favorite character, though, and he doesn‘t come in for awhile. 8mo

Just finished this sprawling, 732-page novel about a man‘s search for the truths about the mother who left him, the girl he loved and lost, the country he lives in —and about himself. I enjoyed it immensely. I know some have criticized it as being stuffed with superfluous or unnecessary characters. But I think the point is to show that we are all connected by random, seemingly insignificant events and people who impact our individual paths.

Kaye Good review. I‘ve had this on Audible since it came out. Haven‘t even tried it yet ! 8mo
