#turnthepage with @Bookwormjillk
My goal is to finish my current stack for September, and maybe get one or two more read!
1. Assassins Blade ✔️
2. Well Met ✔️
3. Count of Monte Cristo
4. Worth the Try ✔️
5. We Used to Live Here
6. Emma
7. Warrior Goddess Training
These are all in various states of progress 🤣

Bookwormjillk Good luck! 2d
DrSabrinaMoldenReads Are you reading the Count right now? I miss him. 🥰 2d

Bookwormjillk I liked the book but am meh about the ending. 2d
BarbaraJean @Bookwormjillk Same. All that for this ending?? 😒 2d
See All 16 Comments
KAO I also really enjoyed this book—until the ending! So bizarre! Thank you for leading the way through this one! (edited) 2d
Ruthiella The ending can be considered a happy one because Julia and Charles have found their faith, which is (for some) richer than any earthly romantic or marital tie. This is what the Christian focused podcast “Close Reads” pointed out. Thanks @Daisey for bringing the podcast to my attention. I certainly would not have picked up on the conversion undercurrent on my own. (edited) 2d
Cuilin @Ruthiella Agree. I think the “forerunner” talk is about Charles‘ journey to catholicism. That is really what the book is about. Waugh himself described it as an operation of Devine Grace between connected characters. It was wonderful reading it with everybody. Thank you. @BarkingMadRead 2d
lil1inblue @Cuilin @ruthiella I think that's why I found the book so fascinating. I wasn't raised in any religion, so a lot of it is outside my personal understanding. This gave me a different perspective of faith. 2d
willaful I found the ending sad. Like so many jerk men, apparently, Charles finally realizes he missed a chance to know his children. (Or at least his son. 🙄 )

If the point of the story was that Charles was missing some part of humanity because he hadn't found faith, phooey I say.
2d
Clare-Dragonfly @Ruthiella Charles has found religion? I don‘t get that at ALL. I guess he does talk to Nanny and go to the chapel in the epilogue…? 2d
Clare-Dragonfly I thought it was more about Brideshead, the place, and how it‘s changing so much and going away and that‘s sad. 2d
Crinoline_Laphroaig Did this have some beautifull crafted prose? Yes. Did I care about any of the characters? No. Put this in the category of 'it's a classic, I've read it, now I never have to again.' To be honest I actually skimmed, read a synopsis, and then read the ending a few days ago just to be done with it.

2d
kwmg40 Like @lil1inblue, I wasn't raised in any religion, so I too find books examining faith interesting. Loved the beautiful prose, the characters not so much. Thanks @BarkingMadRead for hosting! 2d
ElizaMarie I feel like the ending gives us a little bit of hope. With Charles having found his faith and being back at Brideshead, he has an opportunity to be serene and work at Brideshead (I think his true love). 1d
mcctrish @willaful the whole story is sad, ending with the futility of war, lost chances with children and missed opportunities with friends and lovers 1d
willaful @ElizaMarie That makes sense. 23h

BarbaraJean This chapter kind of made me want to throw the book across the room. Or at multiple characters. 3d
Bookwormjillk Pops cracked me up every time he said Beryl. That breakup seemed abrupt to me but then again Charlie doesn‘t really show emotion. Kind of a weird chapter. 3d
See All 12 Comments
willaful That's pretty much how I expected it would go. :-( Their religion is such a strange and powerful force in their lives. 3d
Cuilin @willaful Yes, it‘s like another character in the novel. 3d
willaful @Cuilin another member of the family, and Charles always underestimates that. 3d
willaful A thought I just had. Julia's marriage to Rex wasn't sanctioned by the church because he was divorced. A conniving person could probably have had that marriage annulled. 3d
Clare-Dragonfly Jeez, what the heck? Talk about an anticlimax! I thought Julia would at least talk to Charles about what a condescending jerk he‘s being about her religion. And is he just forgetting about Sebastian?! @BarbaraJean 💯💯💯 3d
ElizaMarie @willaful but—- I don‘t think Charles‘ marriage could be annulled. I might not know the rules of annulment though 3d
willaful @ElizaMarie Well she married a divorced man once, surely she's got a mulligan for that. ;-) 3d
mcctrish I thought the beginning with Lord Marchmain‘s conflicting letters was hilarious which led to the dominoes of who‘s moving where but Julia being unable to marry Charles because of her religion is just a cop out after her first marriage to Rex ( poor Charles is the only one who really wants the house imo) 2d
ElizaMarie @mcctrish He truly loves the house! 1d

Bookwormjillk I feel like there will be some sort of Catholic stumbling block (not a spoiler just a prediction from someone who married in.) No way everything ends so cleanly. 5d
See All 9 Comments
willaful What a sad chapter. Though Charles' dad made me lol again.

I also have a sense of doom for Julia and Charles. I'm thinking more from one of them than from outside, but a Catholic stumbling block could change things for Julia...
5d
mcctrish I guess Julia wasn‘t pregnant 5d
Clare-Dragonfly Cordelia continues to be my favorite! Oh no, she wasted her youth doing actual good in the world, what a terrible fate 🙄 I‘m with @bookwormjillk and @willaful predicting no good end for Charles and Julia. If nothing else, the timeline is getting way too close to the prologue and he did not seem to be thinking of Brideshead as his wife‘s family home! (Then again, who ever knows what Charles is thinking?) 5d
willaful @Clare-Dragonfly Indeed.

5d
ElizaMarie Poor Cordelia - they talk about her wasting her life AND being ugly. Also she wasn‘t as spunky which makes sense but— I was hoping for more wit. 5d
Sparklemn @ElizaMarie I expected more wit, too. Hopefully we‘ll see some yet. 5d

willaful So I spent most of this chapter diagnosing people. 🙄 Brideshead, autistic. Charles... I dunno but very cold in a perturbing way. Julia, maybe pregnant? She seems like the only person with understandable human feelings and I wonder if it's her curse to fall for men who can't properly support her. 6d
mcctrish @willaful Julia being pregnant makes sense because she is all over the place in her emotions 6d
Clare-Dragonfly I guess I was wrong about Celia pushing for divorce. They have to stay together for the children he never sees 🙄 Maybe she just didn‘t want him around at home begging for sex. 6d
Sparklemn @Cuilin Loved this! 😂 6d
Sparklemn @mcctrish @willaful I agree. Pregnant totally makes sense. (edited) 6d
Sparklemn @BarkingMadRead I pictured Kathleen Turner 6d
BarkingMadRead @Sparklemn ohhhhh that‘s a good one! 6d
willaful @Clare-Dragonfly I think she's setting things up so that however things go, she comes out smelling like roses. 6d
lil1inblue @willaful Totally agree about Brideshead. And an argument could be made that Sebastian has ADHD. 5d
lil1inblue @Cuilin That gave me a good chuckle, as well. 😅 5d

Ruthiella I feel like everyone in this novel behaves rather badly other than Cordelia (so far at least). 7d
willaful @Ruthiella They're not an appealing bunch.

Anyone else thinks everyone knows about Julia because Celia broadcasted it?
7d
See All 13 Comments
Bookwormjillk Celia was made to host art shows. In another time she would own her own gallery and wouldn‘t be stuck with a husband that barely knows she‘s alive. 7d
Cuilin @Bookwormjillk Agree. There‘s this trend on TikTok where husbands pack their wives lunches, most barely make an effort. I thought the same watching that content and reading this chapter, like Celia he doesn‘t even like you. 7d
Cuilin @Ruthiella they‘re all so jaded with life!! 7d
Cuilin @willaful It‘s possible she wants out of the marriage. 7d
Clare-Dragonfly I‘m intrigued that there‘s all this gossip about them but no one is going “well, Celia cheated on Charles first,” which suggests it was kept quiet. Charles may feel justified to himself, but society isn‘t going to think so. 6d
mcctrish @willaful she must have, although it doesn‘t seem like Charles and Julia are going to any great pains to hide 6d
ElizaMarie @Clare-Dragonfly that what I was thinking. I feel like knowing more about her affair would be beneficial to not judge Charles so harshly. Why isn‘t he recounting this? Does he not find it pertinent to his story? 6d
willaful @ElizaMarie part of his coldness I think. He cuts out anything he no longer cares about. 6d
Clare-Dragonfly @ElizaMarie Well, it doesn‘t have anything to do with the Flyte family, so it must not be important. 🙄 6d
Sparklemn The writing here is gorgeous. Loving it. 6d

Bookwormjillk Kind of tells you something that Charlie went all over to take care of Sebastian but didn't even know he had a daughter 🙄 1w
willaful The first half of this chapter had my jaw DROPPED. Such total indifference to his family! Do you think it's because he thinks the children aren't his or because he just doesn't give a damn in general? He has them very firmly compartmentalized as her business. 1w
See All 16 Comments
BarkingMadRead @willaful it‘s so bizarre! Maybe he thinks they‘re not his? How can he not care?!? 1w
Cuilin @willaful He‘s so detached, almost cold. Like “if I don‘t see them, they don‘t exist and I can pretend I live in a different time back when things were beautiful with Sebastian at Brideshead” 1w
ElizaMarie I‘m glad he reconnects with Julia - even though it‘s not really on the up and up. 1w
willaful @Cuilin yes! And it made more sense when we learned more about their marriage but still, kind of astonishing. Would he have any interest in Julia at all if she wasn't Sebastian's sister? 1w
KAO This chapter really surprised me! So much is glossed over—Charles is married! And has kids (whom he doesn‘t know)! And connects at last with Julia! That sea-tossed boat seemed a good metaphor for his life in some ways. 1w
Clare-Dragonfly I was thinking all along that Charles seems to regard his wife as a useful possession, and then he admits to Julia that he married her because she seemed like a good wife for a painter. 🙄 @willaful Right?! I suspect he thinks at least the girl isn‘t his, but it‘s still mind-boggling that he left when his wife was pregnant for TWO YEARS and would rather sleep with his boyfriend‘s sister than meet his daughter. 1w
mcctrish I had no idea who we were talking about ( the wife) and thought I‘d missed something alas it was just the emotions. I have to say listening to Celia talk would probably drive me to Mexico for 2 years 1w
willaful It's an interesting contrast to The Age of Innocence. Charles feels no compunction whatsoever about disliking his wife, ignoring his children and being unfaithful. Perhaps he'll divorce her. 1w
Ruthiella I think Charles has adopted his father‘s way of child rearing-ignoring them. 1w
Clare-Dragonfly @willaful Yes! When he took the card off the flowers and had them sent to Julia I was like “who do you think you are, Newland Archer?” 😂 1w
Clare-Dragonfly Oh! And I totally knew Celia was going to tell Charles she was pleased he was keeping Julia company. I don‘t know if she really doesn‘t think there‘s anything between them or if she just doesn‘t care. Or maybe she‘s pushing an affair so they have an excuse to divorce and she can say it‘s not her fault… 1w
mcctrish @Clare-Dragonfly 🤣🤣🤣 6d
Sparklemn @willaful It breaks my heart to see how little he cared about his children. Maybe this will change but I‘m not holding out much hope. (edited) 6d

ElizaMarie Me too!!! I just thought of her like a guilt-tripper! Sebastian and Kurt? I don‘t like it. Sebastian seems to have very co-dependent relationships. 1w
willaful @ElizaMarie It occurs to me that a lot of people who are rejected by or reject their families of birth wind up in this kind of relationship. Someone who gives you what you need, weird though it may look to the outside world.

Re the mom, even a stopped clock...
1w
Clare-Dragonfly I thought we‘d never get to hear from Anthony Blanche again after he was sent down from Oxford so I was delighted to see him again in this chapter! He and Cordelia are the best. Though Cordelia wins by being smart and honest, not just hilarious. 1w

willaful Oh man. Charles falls for Julia because she's the closest he can get to Sebastian. UGH.

Cordelia is a beam of sunshine. 💛
2w
lil1inblue Cordelia was excellent in this chapter. ??? I also found Rex's whole "I'll just become a Catholic" thing hilarious. 2w
Cuilin @lil1inblue that was so funny, especially with Cordelia interfering. 😆 2w
ElizaMarie Rex doesn‘t seem to get it. I would think Julia would have been insulted that he didn‘t take the Catholicism seriously and dismissed it. Like to say he would throw money at the fact his x wife existed - he is cocky. —- oh and Cordelia is a hoot!!! 2w
mcctrish I quite liked Rex until he went back to his mistress because Julia wouldn‘t put out - she was 20? In an era that frowned on extra marital sex AND didn‘t talk about sex to know what to expect 2w
Clare-Dragonfly @willaful 👆🏻👆🏻👆🏻 1w
Clare-Dragonfly Cordelia is the best. I want to say Rex and Julia deserve each other, but that might be a little harsh on Julia. The bit where she catches him with his mistress so pointedly avoids him, and then when she‘s talked into seeing him she emerges engaged, cracked me up! 1w
ElizaMarie @Clare-Dragonfly YES !!! I was thinking she was going to “hold strong“ with her avoiding him and making him chase her to even talk to her! But... she probably knew how weak she was to him and his speeches. I felt sorry for Julia. 1w
lil1inblue @mcctrish 🎯 🎯 🎯Exactly this! 1w
BarbaraJean @mctrish Ugh, yes. Especially when his earlier version of it to Charles was that Julia knew about the mistress and was fine with it 🙄 1w

Cuilin Oh Sebastian, 😔 I love how Charles is unbothered by Lady M‘s disappointment in him. (edited) 2w
willaful The whole family is so toxic, even Cordelia at times. Though that's from her upbringing and she's sweet enough that she might overcome it.
2w
lil1inblue The discomfort in this chapter was palpable! Oof! 2w
Cuilin @lil1inblue Yes, that‘s a really good way of putting it. I‘m not a fan of Lady M. 2w
Bookwormjillk Ooof the fun is over. 2w
mcctrish The money is all gone - oof 2w
Clare-Dragonfly Is Brideshead‘s first name actually Brideshead?! I thought he was Lord Brideshead but probably has a real first name and the last name Flyte like Sebastian (you know, like George Gordon, Lord Byron)… but even his mom calls him “Bridey.” 2w
Clare-Dragonfly @willaful I‘d have hope for Cordelia if she were to be spirited away to some other family. 2w
ElizaMarie EESH this family is A LOT! I‘d be drinking all the time too!!! 2w
Ruthiella @Clare-Dragonfly Bridey does have a Christian name. Brideshead is just the title and Bridey his nickname. But the book never reveals what it is. 2w
BarbaraJean I‘ve been catching up and discovered today that my copy combines Book I and Book II (chapters 1-8) and therefore Book III has become Book II (chapters 1-5). As if I wasn‘t confused enough already by falling behind 🥴 Also I miss Aloysius. 🧸 2w
BarkingMadRead @BarbaraJean would it help if I started off with the chapter title? Aaaand I‘m just now realizing those are only in my table of contents (edited) 1w
BarbaraJean @BarkingMadRead Yeah, I don‘t have chapter titles at all 😆 I‘m planning to read the last two chapters in my Book I / your Book II today, which will put me back on track with the group and should help with the clarity! It‘s just such an odd difference to have between editions (and makes me suspicious of mine!) (edited) 1w

willaful Fascinating chapter! To me, Charles and Sebastian are clearly in love... But do they know it themselves?

The ending is heartbreaking. Sebastian's family is doing the absolute worst thing they could do in the name of taking care of him. I'm afraid they're driving him to his death.
2w
Cuilin The juxtaposition of the helicoptering of Sebastian‘s family and The “hey you‘re 22, no? you‘re 20, I thought it was longer but, live your own life” from Charles‘s father is something. (edited) 2w

dabbe @BarkingMadRead I was looking over the chapters, and a few of them are 40-60 pages. I'm okay powering through, but I do have a modified reading schedule if anyone is interested; we'd still finish well before the end of September. Starting with tomorrow, here it is:
9/13: Ch. 5, first half
9/14: Ch. 5, second half
9/15: Book 2/Ch. 1
9/16: Ch. 2
9/17: Ch. 3
9/18: Book 3/Ch. 1, first half
9/19: Ch. 1, second half
9/20: Ch. 2
9/21: Ch. 3 ⬇️
2w
dabbe 9/22: Ch. 4
9/23: Ch. 5, first half
9/24: Ch. 5, second half
9/25: Epilogue

This is only a suggestion that I thought I'd share. 🧡💜💛
2w
Cuilin I can‘t remember if this is my third or fourth time reading this book, but I cannot figure out Ryder‘s father!! he just exudes sarcasm, right? Also, Cordelia is hilarious. “I can‘t spare you a whole rosary you know. Just a decade.” 2w
BarkingMadRead @dabbe I love this, thanks for figuring it out! I will make a separate post and tag everyone so that nobody misses it 2w
Ruthiella @Cuilin This is only my second time reading it. I do recall on first reading it how I thought Charles relationship was his father was sad and lonely, but on the second reading I kind of think that Ryder Sr. is doing the right thing by encouraging (in his way) Charles to live within his means (which are very generous 740 in 1925!?!!) and get him out of the house and living his own life. Plus, he likes Sebastian - later chapters will prove. 2w
mcctrish I love Cordelia! Sebastien stuttering “Charles, Charles! It‘s Mr Ryder” Cordelia “Charles, meet me ……” I‘m getting Flavia vibes! I love a precocious tween girl 2w
Cuilin @Ruthiella yeah I agree with this assessment. I do think he was trying to encourage Charles to live within his means and also to use his summer appropriately, maybe get a job and then he could afford go to the theater, etc.. plus I also think Charles though aware of his father‘s loneliness, doesn‘t write to him. 2w

Bookwormjillk I haven‘t finished the chapter yet but those dinner scenes had me rolling. I love this book. 2w
Ruthiella In my limited experience, this chapter with its snarky humor is more typical of his other novels (The Loved One and A Handful of Dust). 2w

mcctrish If surviving dinners with his father does not encourage savings going forward, nothing will 2w
willaful Dad is a piece of work! Though given that he already provided Charles with an ample allowance, I can't entirely blame him for playing dumb.

So I'm guessing Charles used up the last of his money rushing to Sebastian's bedside? Hmmm....
2w
dabbe @mcctrish 😂😂😂 2w
dabbe I can't help but compare Charles and Sebastian's relationship to Gene and Finny's in A SEPARATE PEACE, though this one they're in college, and there's definitely more humor. Pretty much similar time periods as well. And how dumb am I? I had no idea Mr. Waugh pronounced his name as EVE-luhn. I'm thoroughly enjoying this book. 2w
Clare-Dragonfly I don‘t believe a word anyone says in this book. This is not a complaint. 2w
Clare-Dragonfly Why didn‘t Sebastian invite Charles earlier if he wanted him around so badly?! 😂 Also, dunno if Dad is thinking explicitly “hmm, perhaps my son is gay” but I love him commenting that he wouldn‘t turn up at his friend‘s deathbed because the friend‘s wife wouldn‘t like it. 2w
KAO I chuckled aloud when I read Sebastian‘s brief letter to Charles actually dated: “I wonder what day it is”—and I thought to myself that I could easily and honestly date my next letter to a friend this same way instead of checking my calendar to give the impression that I have my life under control with an accurate date! (edited) 2w
KAO I‘m enjoying this book too—and am pleasantly surprised by the amount of humor! 2w
ElizaMarie @willaful I agree! I think the dad is purposely playing dumb about the $ because he knows his son squandered it away —- I love the dad‘s attitude! (edited) 2w
ElizaMarie So far the book is pretty funny! These characters! @Clare-Dragonfly I don‘t believe anyone either!!!! All the dramatics! 2w
Sparklemn @KAO This was my favorite line of the chapter! 😆 2w
lil1inblue I so agree with @bookwormjillk the dinner scenes were uproariously hilarious. I love Waugh's humor! 2w
lil1inblue @dabbe You're nailing these comparisons! It's been a while, but I definitely feel hints of A Separate Peace. 2w
willaful @KAO yes, that was a hoot... And very Sebastian, I think. 2w

TheBookHippie @Cuilin I got a new copy so I could flag it up 🤣🙌🏼 3w
Cuilin @TheBookHippie We need to share what we‘re flagging somehow. I have five different themes that I‘m annotating. I don‘t want to put spoilers in the chat! I‘ll tag you in a spoiler post perhaps 🤔 3w
TheBookHippie @Cuilin I think flagging is my book love language 🤣😅 I generally do quotes to print out -quotes to write on and quotes to ponder 😅🙃😊 3w
TheBookHippie @Cuilin I‘m also tracking the LGBTQIA undercurrent 3w
mcctrish I‘m here for the flagging - I only watched this before and I replaced my childhood teddy with a brand new Gund at the time and named him Elliot. He went everywhere with me. 3w
Cuilin @mcctrish 🧸 cute. I loved the TV adaptation more than the movie. 3w
Cuilin @Bookwormjillk I recommend, it‘s interesting. 3w
mcctrish @Cuilin I only watched the mini series - I was in Grade 12 but now I might try and dig up the movie 3w
Cuilin @mcctrish It‘s good. I think Emma Thompson (love) plays Sebastian‘s mom, but I don‘t think anybody can play Ryder like Jeremy Irons. 3w
ElizaMarie I‘m enjoying the ride so far —- but have no idea what I‘m reading or where this story is going. I feel like I‘m reading into the “friendship” as more? But maybe it‘s just me. We will see —- also have not seen the movie or read any reviews so fresh eyes here! —- these books yall pick are generally not something I‘ve ever ventured towards before (part of the fun) 3w
Bookwormjillk @ElizaMarie not just you 3w
dabbe @mcctrish 💜🩶🧡 3w
dabbe The way Ryder describes Sebastian re: his beauty reminds me of Nick describing Jay Gatsby. Definitely more feelings going on here. 💜🩶🧡 3w
Bookwormjillk @dabbe do you think Nick had feelings for Gatsby? 3w
lil1inblue @Cuilin I highlighted the same passage. Such stunning writing. 😍 3w
lil1inblue @TheBookHippie "flagging is my book love language" makes me feel seen. ? #hardsame 3w
lil1inblue @dabbe Ooh. Interesting comparison. I also got Dorian Gray vibes. Definite feelings. 💖 3w
dabbe @lil1inblue Ooh, good one, too! 🧡🩶💜 3w
dabbe @Bookwormjillk I seriously do. There is also an inference to a sexual encounter between Nick and Mr. McKee in chapter 2. The narrative ends with an ellipsis (...) after Nick and Mr. McKee leave a party, suggesting a passage of time and a sexual encounter. This is supported by details like Nick being in the bedroom and Mr. McKee being in his underwear, which would have been unusual for two heterosexual men to be in that situation in the 1920s. (edited) 3w
dabbe @Bookwormjillk I also think so because of his relationship with Jordan, a tomboy-ish female who plays golf. And that relationship doesn't work out, nor did his one with the girl back home. He seems in love with Gatsby or the idea of him. All inferences, but hard ones to ignore. 3w
lil1inblue @dabbe @Bookwormjillk Now I want to re-read Gatsby. I read it in school in the 90s, so we obviously didn't explore homosexual themes (gasp! 😱🤣 ). I see what you mean, Denise, but don't remember details. 🤔 3w
dabbe @lil1inblue 💜🩶🧡 3w
Bookwormjillk @lil1inblue @dabbe I‘ll have to pay more attention next time I re-read! 3w
dabbe @Bookwormjillk Whoah! Please forgive the overzealous teacher in me! I never picked up on that when I first read it. It's only after YEARS of teaching it that my brain (and wormhole digging) got me to this point. I hate sounding like a know-it-all. I'm so sorry. 🧡💜💛 3w
Bookwormjillk @dabbe no! I appreciate it. I love Gatsby and I re-read it every year so I‘m happy to have a new angle to look at. Thank you! 3w
Clare-Dragonfly Oh good, I‘m so glad I‘m not the only one seeing the subtext (and that it will get even more explicit)! When Sebastian was wearing Ryder‘s tie I was like “it can‘t be, this is a WWII novel” and then the teddy bear and he‘s weird but charms everyone and one of his friends at the party is an aesthete… and then the aesthete tells SEBASTIAN that he‘d like to fill him full of ARROWS… and I‘m delighted that it‘s totally gay. 🏳️‍🌈😁 2w

Cuilin Archer 0 points May 💯 points!!!! From watching the Gilded Age, divorced women were completely ostracized, so ladies had to have their wits about them. 4w
willaful Archer was always trapped. He's just been feebly struggling instead of gnawing his own leg off like Ellen did. 4w

Ruthiella @willaful Totally agree! 👍 4w
lil1inblue @willaful Very true. And in many ways, he's trapped in his own mind, as well! 4w
Bookwormjillk @willaful you got it 4w
Bookwormjillk Also I bailed on this book once before so this is my first time getting to the end. I wish I had known how much I would love this. Thanks @barkingmadread 4w
Clare-Dragonfly At the beginning when one of the moms expressed concern about May overexerting herself I was like oh, she‘s definitely pregnant and got REALLY mad at Archer. But then at the end of the chapter it turns out he had no idea, but she used it to get rid of Ellen! Clever May, self-sacrificing Ellen. 4w
Clare-Dragonfly @willaful Ooh, well put. 4w
dabbe I think I'm the only one here who wishes/ed (I've read it before) that Ellen and Archer would work out. That would mean them both bucking their society for the love they feel for one another. And yes, the only one who would be hurt would be May, but I somehow think she'd find a way to move on--or she'd shoot Archer dead with an arrow. Which is pretty much what her being pregnant has done to him. 🤔 4w
BarkingMadRead @dabbe as someone who was recently cheated on and dumped, i think it all sucks 😆 but if he‘s not happy, he should leave first and then have all the feels. This dancing around and flirting is childish and stupid 🤷🏻‍♀️ 4w
dabbe @BarkingMadRead Agree 💯. He knew he had feelings for Ellen BEFORE he married May; he should have never married her. She even gave him an out! He is the most frustrating and egotistical character, and I think I'm biased towards him because of Day-Lewis.
P.S. I am beyond sorry about your ex and what happened to you. It does suck--totally. 🧡🩶💛

BarkingMadRead @dabbe DDL is a delight for sure 😍 4w
ElizaMarie Ugh @BarkingMadRead cheaters suck - I am so sorry you went through that 4w

Clare-Dragonfly I think Ellen intended to leave when she made the plan to hook up with Archer! She‘s always sacrificing herself for him (and May), which is good because he can‘t be bothered. lil1inblue It's a shame Archer doesn't recognize how very clever May actually is. 4w
ElizaMarie I kinda felt a little bit better that Archer was potentially gonna confess - but felt it was #TooLate. Also I do like the idea of wearing your wedding dress out- I used to wear mine on anniversaries (I was married by Elvis - my dress is more a summer white lace type of thing - not an extravagant dress) 4w
dabbe @ElizaMarie Okay, I have to hear more about being married by Elvis. Inquiring mind is dying to know! 😂 4w
willaful Oh yeah, I was expecting a knitting needle confession before Archer did his, but clever May didn't even need it... 4w

KAO @ElizaMarie @dabbe “Married by Elvis”?!? Please tell us more! 4w
ElizaMarie @KAO @Dabbe ♥️♥️♥️My husband and I eloped and got married in Vegas by an Elvis impersonator. We had been engaged 3 months and while I was on a travel assignment he booked the Vegas trip for us and surprised me (we had already talked about eloping) - so I went to Macys the day before the flight and bought a white summer dress and some white keds. Ruthiella When I first read this book, some decades ago, I was much more sympathetic to Archer…less so now for sure. 1mo
Cuilin @Ruthiella It‘s a great line. We‘re just older and wiser now. 😆 1mo
dabbe @Ruthiella I was, too. And as much as I love Winona, I was never a fan of May. All three play their parts in this society the way they're supposed to--on the outer level at least. Those stays are tied so tightly around them they can't be and get what they really want. What a frustrating time period. 1mo
Ruthiella @dabbe Totally agree. I saw May as manipulative then. Now I consider her position differently. 1mo
lil1inblue Archer leaving the carriage felt like such a tantrum. He doesn't get what he wants, so he leaves. #bigbaby 1mo
ElizaMarie @Ruthiella I can see May as being manipulative, but.. I feel a lot of her behavior is justified. (But -- I never watched the movie or read the book before this readathon) - I wonder if I would be like a lot of y'all with changes in perspective. 1mo
KAO This is also my first time to read the book, and I‘ve never seen the movie. I honestly feel sorry for May, Archer, and Ellen. They all are just so very stifled at the least (or downright trapped at the most) by the society and customs of that era. I guess that‘s the point of it all. #heavysigh 1mo
dabbe @Ruthiella I love how our feelings about books can change over time. 🩶🤍🖤 1mo
Bookwormjillk It‘s a great line if not for the circumstances 1mo

mcctrish Oh what a wicked web we weave 1mo
dabbe IMHO, this is Wharton's magnum opus. 🩶🤍🖤 1mo
willaful I wonder at what point did May realize... 1mo
Clare-Dragonfly May is sooooo good. And Archer‘s inner monologue just gets worse and worse! 1mo
ElizaMarie @willaful I was thinking that too. But I am happy she has pieced a lot of red flags together and figured things out. I love knowing Archer isn't as slick as he thinks he is! 1mo
lil1inblue @willaful @elizamarie I hope we find out! 🤔 1mo
Cuilin @dabbe agreed!!! 1mo

lil1inblue @Bookwormjillk I nearly cheered aloud for May! 😏 😏 😏 #archerisoutmatched 1mo
lil1inblue “[Archer] felt, no doubt, more sorry for her than her indignant relatives; but it seemed to him that the tie between husband and wife, even if breakable in prosperity, should be indissoluble in misfortune.“ That's so rich coming from a #cheatingcheaterwhocheats, and it's interesting that he doesn't apply the same logic to Ellen. 1mo
dabbe @lil1inblue Amazing how sympathetic one can be towards the one that the heart wants, isn't it? 😏 1mo
Bookwormjillk @lil1inblue Archer is playing checkers while May plays chess 1mo
lil1inblue @Bookwormjillk 🎯 🎯 🎯 1mo
lil1inblue @dabbe And how hypocritical! 😂 #ireallydonotlikearcher 1mo
mcctrish @Bookwormjillk for real 🏆 1mo
mcctrish @lil1inblue I don‘t think Archer listens to himself when he thinks or talks 😆😆😆 1mo
KAO @Bookwormjillk Exactly! May has surprised me in this way! 1mo
julieclair @Bookwormjillk @willaful May is amazing AND scary!!! 1mo
ElizaMarie So proud of May —- she knows exactly what she is doing!!!! 1mo

ElizaMarie Okay, so May suspects, but what does she do about it? Do you think she is siding with the family against Ellen because of this suspicion? Like, secretly (or not so), she wants Ellen to be destitute, to financial and societal ruin? Or just to get her to leave? Either way? 1mo

Bookwormjillk @ElizaMarie The passage with may at the end where it said what she said in one phrase and then said what she meant in about 2 paragraphs was so interesting. I'm not sure she even knows what she wants though other than to maybe keep up appearances and practice archery in peace? 1mo
Cuilin “They smell less if one blows them out”!!!!!!! Methinks May wants rid of Ellen. (edited) 1mo
mcctrish I love how Archer knows exactly what May is saying even though she‘s saying nothing, AS IF! Nobody talks about anything, how would he know what goes unspoken #utternonsense but his guilt is talking loud in his head, that‘s for sure 1mo
lil1inblue @Cuilin 🎯😏 1mo
lil1inblue @mcctrish Exactly! His arrogance is beyond the pale. #dick 1mo
lil1inblue “Archer's New York tolerated hypocrisy in private relations; but in business matters it exacted a limpid and impeccable honesty.“ So Beaufort can be a #cheatingcheaterwhocheats at home and no one gives a fork, but he can't fail in business! How horrid! #shameshame 1mo
mcctrish @lil1inblue at least they are worrying about Beaufort‘s wife now being left penniless ( as opposed to when he was gallivanting around town and throwing money at women who weren‘t her) 1mo
lil1inblue @mcctrish I felt like they were less worried about Beaufort's wife, and more worried about the disgrace to the family name. #horrors 1mo
Clare-Dragonfly They‘re worried about Beaufort‘s wife being ostracized by his screw-ups. But they could choose not to ostracize her 🙄 1mo

Cuilin My gast is flabbered! Did May‘s family acquiesce to the preponed wedding because they knew how Archer felt? #ThePlotThickens #TheWellandsAreSly (edited) 1mo

lil1inblue @Cuilin It does please me if they know. Because he thinks he's so sly. 1mo
ElizaMarie @lil1inBlue and @Cuilin - I totally agree! I hope they know. I know Archer is #Delulu but ... come on, people have to see what's going on! --- I so want to read ahead - but so far I am being good #ChapterADay is SO SO HARD! 1mo
BarkingMadRead @ElizaMarie I feel like I‘m approaching a binge finish 🤣 1mo
Cuilin @BarkingMadRead @ElizaMarie I foresee a binge read in my future. Lol 1mo
Bookwormjillk @BarkingMadRead @elizamarie @Cuilin the chapters are so short in this book a binge finish is VERY tempting 1mo
Clare-Dragonfly That conversation was really hard to follow but it does seem like the French tutor is not going to blackmail Archer like I feared! 1mo
julieclair @Cuilin I think they do know. But how would they have found out? 1mo
Cuilin @julieclair he thinks he hides his feelings well, but I think he‘s more demonstrative then he realises. 1mo
Cuilin @Clare-Dragonfly yeah like when Archer got angry and stood up, I had to reread it. Like what did he say that made you angry? 1mo

BarkingMadRead @bookwormjillk ohhhh I didn‘t even think of that! That would be epic #busted 1mo
Ruthiella What I found crazy is that Archer ran into acquaintances in Boston. It really underscored what a small world he moves in. 1mo
Clare-Dragonfly I thought the guy in the crowd was the French tutor from London. 1mo
