willaful @peanutnine I'm buddy watching an English Christmas program (The Box of Delights) and someone commented that all English children are 40 years old. Conversely, I think all English adults may be children. 😂

It does seem to me that if/when someone gets murdered, Albert Campion is indirectly responsible...

Bookwormjillk I had trouble keeping everyone apart as usual but I‘m sure if I keep going it will eventually make sense. 1d
KAO I‘d never heard of this book or the author, so it‘s all brand new to me! I looked it up online to find the original publication date to be 1929. (My paperback copy didn‘t have that info.) Meanwhile, the repetition of “Glad it‘s not mine” makes me smile. More to come on that, for sure! 1d

ElizaMarie Wow!!! Didn't expect that! 2d
BarbaraJean I knew about the controversial ending, but I didn‘t realize it would be the ending ending. Like the last scene. All of this and then THAT. I can‘t. And what was up with Rose of Sharon‘s little mysterious smile?!? 😳 That took it over the edge from uncomfortable to creepy. Still. This was a relentlessly sad and infuriating masterpiece. 2d
See All 12 Comments
eeclayton #mysoulhurtstoo What a heartbreaking story. Thanks @BarkingMadRead and #HashtagBrigade for this buddy read. It's a beautifully written and tragically relevant book, but I wouldn't have been able to finish it if it wasn't for you. 2d
Crinoline_Laphroaig I had to finish before Thanksgiving, I didn't want to be reading with family here. My reaction was WTF? That's it? 2d
lauraisntwilder While the ending is unexpected, Steinbeck was setting us up for something like that the whole time. It's another example of how the poor are only able to rely on other poor people, to the point of sacrificing their own comfort or propriety. There are no strangers anymore and everyone is family. I think Rose of Sharon is glad for something good to come from her heartbreak. Just my take. What a book!!! 2d
Bookwormjillk I had remembered the ending but not the scene with Uncle John and the baby. That hit me hard this read. Also reading this made want to try to do better about my bitterness towards my husband‘s cousin living in my basement 😂 Thanks as always @BarkingMadRead looking forward to starting something short tomorrow. 2d
dabbe I just couldn't reread it this time. After having to teach it in high school (as well as OF MICE AND MEN), I couldn't face the bleakness this time. But, oh, how I love Steinbeck's writing. Here's for a short read in December! Thanks @BarkingMadRead for your on-point #hashtags--as always. 🩵☃️💙 2d
KAO I had never read this, and I‘m so glad I did it this month with you all. I found the writing truly wonderful, even though the unfolding of events really brought heartbreak after heartbreak. I do wish Steinbeck could have given us more hope for these tough characters at the end. Tragic! 2d
Bklover Well. I‘m glad I read it. @BarkingMadRead made it possible, but I am glad it‘s over. Beautiful writing. East of Eden I could read again- this one nope. Thanks @BarkingMadRead ❤️ 1d
KAO @Bklover I loved East of Eden too—and agree that I could read it again. This Grapes of Wrath journey was just so endlessly sad. I‘m still glad that I read it though. 23h

eeclayton I loved that Ruthie wasn't scolded too harshly. In stressful situations, adults sometimes forget that kids are just kids, and it's nice that the mother here didn't. 4d
TheAromaofBooks @eeclayton - Right? And Tom wasn't mad, either - he literally was just like “kids say stuff when they get mad“ I haven't agreed with everything the Joads have done, but I admire the way that they are loyal to one another. 4d

Crinoline_Laphroaig I was so glad the Turtle was safe! And then the poor rabbit. That was enough. I stopped reading and will start with tomorrow's chapter. 4w
ElizaMarie @lil1inblue me too!!!! I think I‘d be super bummed if I pushed through this one 4w
Bklover 🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢👍 4w
lauraisntwilder Don't know what I did to deserve reading about that pig in this chapter and a scene with leeches in it in a different book on the same day. 😳 4w
Bklover 🐇🔥🍽️👎 4w
BarkingMadRead @lauraisntwilder are you reading both of those books with me? 😳 4w
lauraisntwilder @BarkingMadRead No! Definitely wasn't blaming you in any way. I'm reading The Ladies of Missalonghi. Did you read about leeches yesterday, too? My sympathies! 4w
BarkingMadRead @lauraisntwilder I‘m reading the Body, they made the movie Stand By Me based on the book, and there‘s a scene with leeches 4w
lauraisntwilder @BarkingMadRead That's in my TBR. I'll get to it one day. 4w

KAO This chapter makes me so sad. Such helplessness in the face of devastating loss. 4w
willaful This kind of infuriated me because it made me so aware of history rhyming. These books are full of accumulated wisdom and yet we keep doing the same things over and over. Reading it at this very moment in history really drives it home. 4w

SamAnne @willaful exactly. We continue to relive it. One of my clearest memories of high school is our amazing English teacher have us read this. Context: redneck timber town highschool mid-80s. All of us were “whew glad that doesn‘t happen anymore.” And then she showed us a documentary on the plight of orchard workers in CA in relatively current times. Have never forgotten. (edited) 4w
willaful @SamAnne I'm glad you had such a good teacher. 4w
BarbaraJean @willaful My thoughts exactly. All the bank stuff. All the faceless non-human/inhuman entities. All the shifting of blame. 😡 (edited) 4w
dabbe @willaful @SamAnne Same here! 🧡🍁💛 4w
lil1inblue @willaful 🎯🎯🎯 4w
lil1inblue @SamAnne What a powerful lesson. And what an amazing teacher. 💓 4w
SamAnne @willaful @dabbe @lil1inblue Raise a glass to Eleanor Dinkins. She terrified me at first. Then I loved her. And what a treat to get to know her when I was an adult. Even in my conservative red neck timber town, what freedom our teachers had to teach us! The 80s. Now I raise a glass to all the teachers out there doing the difficult work under difficult circumstances. I always thought it would get better, not worse. 4w
dabbe @SamAnne I always took it as a compliment when I student would tell me that I terrified them ... at first. And I always waited for the magic word “But“ ... music to my ears! Here's to you, Eleanor Dinkins! 🍸 4w
ElizaMarie This chapter gutted me. @davbe - I am sure you are one of those teachers people still talk about :) @SamAnne you are right back when we were in school I felt teachers were able to be so much more truthful now- it‘s walking on egg shells 4w
lil1inblue @SamAnne Here's to Eleanor Dinkins! 💓🍸💓 My Ms. Dinkins was Mr. Joe Locascio. Teachers are so amazing. 4w
lil1inblue @dabbe I think I would have loved having you as a teacher. I can see hints of it in the buddy reads you host. 💓💓💓 4w
dabbe @ElizaMarie In both positive and negative ways! I didn't anoint myself as #crabbyabbe for nothing! 🤣🤣🤣 4w
dabbe @lil1inblue You are too kind. I can sometimes come across as too teachery! 🤣😍🤣 4w
SamAnne @dabbe new adverb . Teachery! 4w
dabbe @SamAnne 🤪🤣😘 4w

ElizaMarie GEEZE that former preacher! Ha! I loved his rationalization of his sex life :) We aren't too far in, and again, I am going in blind, so I have no clue whats going on, but its odd. I am looking forward to keep reading and exploring where the story takes us! 1mo
BarkingMadRead @elizamarie I‘ve started it but not finished it, so I‘ll be curious in a little while 🤣 the writing is beautiful but it‘s such a sad story so far! 1mo

Crinoline_Laphroaig I'm glad nothing happened to the turtle. Anymore turtle meaness and I'm out. 1mo
Bookwormjillk This was the only assigned reading in High School I actually finished. I‘ve read it a few times since. But since I have a Swiss cheese brain when it comes to what I‘ve read I don‘t remember the details. 1mo
Cuilin Ok I was this 🤏 close to DNFing but something happened when he started talking about being in prison that made me interested. Especially the guy who returned because life was better in prison then out. Sticking with it for now. 1mo
willaful I was fascinated by this chapter. I think the Preacher's take has a lot to be said fo it.

But I'm so worried about the poor turtle! Even if he's meant for a pet, I fear he wil wind up food.
1mo
dabbe Jim Casey. Initials JC. Just like ... 🧐 1mo
SamAnne @dabbe could catch. Yes. I enjoyed this chapter. Oh that poor turtle! 1mo
lil1inblue @willaful I, too, was intrigued by the preacher's viewpoint. Especially when combined with the JC initial observation that @dabbe pointed out! 4w
lil1inblue I'm way too invested in the turtle. 4w
Bklover @Crinoline_Laphroaig @lil1inblue I agree! This turtle business is making me crazy. 4w
lauraisntwilder The story about stealing the house! 😂 4w

Cuilin I‘ll admit it, I‘m glad this was a short chapter cause I‘m not yet connecting with this book. 1mo
lil1inblue #youarenottheonlyonestressingoveraturtle I gasped audibly when he got hit. 1mo
BarbaraJean I was SO invested in the turtle. Relief when the first car missed him. Shocked when the truck swerved to intentionally hit him! Relief again when he made it across. I‘m going to need future turtle updates, Steinbeck. 1mo
SamAnne I‘m looking forward to this reread. I‘ve also been doing a slow read of East of Eden. I‘m on a 6 week road trip and have traveled through southern Central Valley, the orange groves, Visalia, where Steinbeck traveled and spent in before writing GOW. 1mo
SamAnne And I loved a chapter devoted to the trials and tribulations of a turtle. Perseverance! 1mo
lauraisntwilder I tried to read this once WAY before I was ready and didn't finish. It's been so long that I'd just about convinced myself that I made up the turtle chapter! I've since read and enjoyed East of Eden, so I should give this one another try 1mo
BarkingMadRead @lauraisntwilder would you like me to add you to the tag list? We are reading a chapter a day, and the first few were very short! It would be easy to catch up 1mo
willaful So shocked! People, ugh. 1mo
willaful I guess it makes a great metaphor though. 1mo
Bklover Poor turtle. 🐢 but he‘s hanging on! 1mo
ElizaMarie Because he writes so beautifully, I was totally invested in this turtle. Also, people are shitty 1mo

Bklover Gotta tell you- I was talking to my daughter and telling her we‘re reading The Grapes of Wrath. I just said it was the Litsy group and she wanted to know if that‘s the group with all the women fainting. Made me laugh. 😆 1mo
BarkingMadRead @Bklover 🤣🤣🤣 1mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig I'm catching up. It's interesting to read place you know. Drive past prison in McAlester so many times. It's right on Hwy 69. 1mo
