Come Closer
Come Closer: A Novel | Sara Gran
She Will Never Be Lonely Again . . . Amanda is happily married to Ed, works as an architect, and likes her life. But disturbances begin to upset her. Odd noises haunt their apartment. She suffers occasional blackouts, yet there is no medical explanation. She and her husband have petty squabbles; Ed seems less than lovable. The image of a beautiful woman out of her past invades Amandas dreams. Instead of a book she had ordered by mail, she receives Demon Possession, Past and Present . Soon after, Amanda accidentally burns her husband with a cigarette. Something seemed to take her over. She begins to study the book on possession. Does everything that has happened have a rational explanation? Are the coincidences that have occurred just that? Or has she been possessed by a female demon known to students of the Kabbalah as Naamah?

I started this not realizing it was a novella. When I looked at my progress and saw 30% done when I just started, I was so confused. This was a bit too much to try and pack into a small book and I didn‘t feel the story developed well. It was touted as “so scary” and “terrifying”. I wouldn‘t even categorize it as creepy 😂. Oh well, I‘ll continue my search for a truly scary book for me.

Overall Rating 4⭐ | Narration 😀 = Good
This is a short little story with an indelible little punch to it about a demon possession of an ordinary woman, living an ordinary life. It turned out to be a fairly creepy listen/read that I actually enjoyed despite how short it was.
(My graphic depicts the German (or at least I think it is) cover. I used that version of the cover because it‘s the best one in my opinion.)

Started and finished today.
I'm being a very productive little beaver these days- applying to jobs, interviewing, getting job, finding a new place, getting a new place, training etc.
Anyway audiobooks have been saving my hours of walks/runs/ sorting/packing moments etc.
I enjoyed this one, good level of creepy but maybe not overly a satisfying ending and also maybe a little sexist still.

First heard about this book in a short story by John Langan & was looking forward to it since. It hit all the right notes of a possession story, but I enjoyed the telling more than the story itself. The latter was straightforward, which I don‘t mean as a negative; in a way it lent the story a certain inexorableness, which suited it well, but made for a monorail narrative. SG does a terrific job weaving the demon into the mental fabric of the MC ⬇️

rohit-sawant & then gradually ripping it apart. The loss of agency she depicts is terrifying. There‘s some wonderful, creepy imagery. Rather than just feeling sympathetic, it would‘ve hit emotionally a lot more had there been another POV, but I get the intentionality of limiting the lens. At its core, it comes across as a study of the mental landscape of someone being gaslit into an abusive relationship. In that sense, regardless of the supernatural 9mo
rohit-sawant elements, it operates with the bleakness of reality. You‘ll find no familiar story beats where the power of love momentarily chinks the demonic (which I kinda dig, actually. Think the “false face” moment from The Shining by SK). Just the steep slide down. Even if it strayed a bit from my expectations, it‘s a pretty solid horror novel. 9mo
rohit-sawant And @vivastory, I agree about it benefiting from 50 or so more pages. 9mo
vivastory Excellent review! I definitely thought the most disturbing aspect was the parallel that Gran drew between exorcism & hypnosis ie that you'd never do something under the influence of either that is completely alien 9mo
rohit-sawant @vivastory Sorry for the late reply! And Thank you! Loved that aspect. It reminded of Tom Ellis's Lucifer where he says something similar. 9mo

When Amanda & her husband Edward hear tapping noises in their recently renovated loft, it's only the beginning of their problems in this possession story. A one sitting read for me, Gran's book is unsettling, fierce & smart. What a great first read for Women in Horror Month!

The blurbs on Come Closer claim that it is “genuinely scary” and “an intelligent horror story, a literary creepshow.” I disagree. I thought it was a snoozefest with mediocre writing. At least it was a short read.

I read it on October 1 to kick off #Scarathlon2020. Between this book and an audiobook, I read for 5 hours that day.
+65 points for #TeamHarkness

This is a pick for simply being a decent point A to point B possession story. MC, Amanda spirals from normalcy to being fully possessed by a female demon named Na‘amah. However, sometimes, I want to become so drowned in details that I‘m happily suffocated by a book. This book is barely that rain that just gets your car dirty. Maybe it‘s wrong me right book. It was just ok. Photo credit: She devil by Mary Breus.

Centique I love comparing the details in a book to water like that. I totally get it. When I look for a good fantasy or historical novel I want to drown in it too. 🌊 vs 🌧 1y
readordierachel That is a great analogy. Although I liked this book :) 1y
Reggie @readordierachel I felt bad for the dog who stopped recognizing her. I didn‘t like her husband. Also, I had started work and instead of being prepared my job kind of threw us into a chaos we could have avoided. And I took that out in this book. 1y
readordierachel I'm sorry about your job! That sounds very stressful. Better to take it out on a book, I suppose, than something else. Hope things have gotten better. 1y

I really enjoyed this short, creepy read! The question of whether Amanda‘s problems are of supernatural origin or otherwise was captivating (IMHO, its a little bit of both - sometimes very high emotional states or transitions can result in a rebirth of sorts...) Regardless of what side of the argument you fall on, all in all I thought it was a great look at female rage and desire, and how we don‘t really know how to deal with them.

Amanda hears a tapping sound but can't figure out where it's coming from. She finds herself thinking about harming people. A strange woman seems to always be nearby. Is she #fallingslowly into madness or is it something more sinister? A short and unsettling literary horror novel. No big scares, but permeated with dread.

I am now afraid of any tappings I hear around my house. A quick read but very captivating. I enjoyed the idea of a demon possession book considering I only ever saw movies dealing with the topic. Highly recommend for an afternoon creepy read!

Read this in an entire sitting. I read it for #screamathon it‘s about a woman who is possessed by a demon and slowly loses herself to it. A bit short but I think the length was good.

Finished this last night. It had potential but the story didn‘t go where It needed to. It could have been much darker. It was more like a YA novel. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

TheBookAddict You sure do like horror, lol. Just wanted to let you know that I saw the email about the My Favorite Book Swap. I kinda forgot I signed up for it, but rest assured that I‘ve got you covered. I immediately did some book shopping on the inter-webs and am excitedly awaiting the arrival of your books. This is one of my favorite horror novels. It's short but packs a big punch. It features an unreliable narrator who isn't sure if she's being possessed or just going insane. I recommend it to anyone who likes a good possession story. #ReadingResolutions #PhotoChallenge #UnderratedBook #horror #novella #SaraGran #ComeCloser

I have my #readathon supplies and TBR pile ready for tomorrow! I‘ve stacked a few novellas, a couple of short novels, and a short story collection. I also have The Shining audiobook loaded on my iPod.

Some of these have been on past readathon TBRs, but I never made my way through them. I‘m hoping to add a few more books to my total-books-read tally for the month. 📚
