Since their mother died & their father succumbed to addiction, Luna & Solina have mostly been on their own except for each other. Luna works back-to-back shifts at the local diner in order to pay for her twin sister's tuition at the prestigious Kingswood Academy. Then, the week before she was due to return to school for her final term, Solina says she wants to drop out. (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf The twins argue about the sudden decision & in the end Solina heads back to campus, but 12 hours later she is dead.

The police don't seem interested in investigating so Luna decides to take her sister's place. She's going to find out why her sister didn't want to go back, why she was killed, & most of all, who killed her.

I read this one on a whim so wasn't sure what to expect. It turned out to be a decent read with some quite heavy themes,
1w
OutsmartYourShelf but the reader has to suspend their disbelief that the supposed friends (& boyfriend) of Solina wouldn't be suspicious that she was suddenly acting completely out of character. I also thought that it was very obvious who the killer was. Overall though, it was very readable & kept my interest until the end. 3.75🌟

TWs: see GR post for possible spoilers

This was cute! Sage‘s former friend returns to town & starts working at her family‘s apothecary, while her frenemy is on shift there‘s a break in & potions are stolen- including a misbrewed potion that has causes injury to another classmate. A quick read. The mystery was fun to try to untangle, low tension, the world is fun & I was quite entertained.

Following the death of her grandmother, Freya spent this Christmas alone for the first time in years. Freya & her brother were raised by their grandparents after their parents died in an accident & Freya in particular was very close to her grandmother - living in the same house & running a bakery company 'Past Time Treats' together. Now both grandparents are dead & her brother has his own family, (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf so when a last-minute job is offered to cater for a Twelfth Night ball at nearby Hill House, Freya decides to take it.

There she meets charming estate manager, Callum, & Jasper the loveable terrier, & when she is snowed in whilst preparing the Regency-themed cakes, she experiences vivid dreams which seem to be from another time. It seems Hill House is a very special place & it just may show Freya the way forward.

OutsmartYourShelf Now I'm not generally a big reader of romance, but I loved this! Both Freya & Callum were adorable characters (along with Jasper the dog) & I think the timeslip & Christmasy aspects really gave it something extra. It would make a great Christmas season film! Although it works perfectly well as a standalone read, I will definitely be going back & reading the whole series at some point. 5🌟 2w

Gissy Sold! Stacked!👍 2w
Gissy It is part of a series, do I have to read it in order? 2w
OutsmartYourShelf @Gissy No, this is the first one I've read & it works as a standalone too. Not sure about the first 4, but I'll probably read those in order. (edited) 2w

A soft pick. Jeneva is a good go to for a medium nonsensical popcorn thriller. The ending was creepy enough that I had to finish in the morning.

I‘ve decided to shamelessly review some of my son‘s seasonal books to hit some bingo prompts. This is a Halloween book. It makes no sense, “you‘re my special spider. To me there‘s nothing nicer, you‘re my candy super sweet”. Really out of ideas here. Also why is the cover not a pie?

I‘ve decided to shamelessly review some of my son‘s seasonal books to hit some bingo prompts. I thought this 1 was just fall but it‘s actually Thanksgiving. My personal favorite but especially because there‘s a “You‘re my little marshmallow” and my son is Marshall and his grandma calls him Marshmallow. In general it‘s cute and all the elements tie in Tgiving & explain it as family & gathering etc

Melismatic Apt name for the book! So cute!! 🥰 2w

Kathryn has recently split from her husband, & on a night out with a friend, meets Todd who is an IT expert including carrying out work for the local police department. Their relationship never really gets off the ground, but when Kathryn wants to call it off, the charming, helpful, affable Todd shows the other side to his personality, & due to his IT expertise he has access to her phone, her security cameras, & even her car. (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf Everywhere she goes, Todd soon turns up, & when she has finally had enough & files for a restraining order, things become really dark & Kathryn learns that she is not the first woman he has done this to.

I found this a compelling read but one that made me extremely anxious whilst reading it - it was almost like an intense episode of 'Criminal Minds'. I know this is based on a true story, & it is frightening to think that there seems to be very
2w
OutsmartYourShelf little protection for victims of stalking. What there is, is woefully inadequate, & basically ties the victim up in judicial knots & favours the perp. It was in equal parts infuriating & exasperating how Todd was able to use the law to harass his victims. I can only commend anyone who is resilient & strong enough to take cases like this to court & fight on in the face of such obstacles, it must be harrowing. 4🌟 2w
OutsmartYourShelf My thanks to #NetGalley & publishers, After Dark Ink Publishing Co (IBPA), for the opportunity to read an ARC.

TWs: stalking, imprisonment.
