The Inheritance of Orqudea Divina
The Inheritance of Orqudea Divina: A Novel | Zoraida Cordova
Perfect for fans of Alice Hoffman, Isabel Allende, and Sarah Addison Allen, this is a gorgeously written novel about a family searching for the truth hidden in their past and the power theyve inherited, from the author of the acclaimed and giddily exciting (The New York Times Book Review) Brooklyn Brujas series. The Montoyas are used to a life without explanations. They know better than to ask why the pantry never seems to run low or empty, or why their matriarch wont ever leave their home in Four Riverseven for graduations, weddings, or baptisms. But when Orqudea Divina invites them to her funeral and to collect their inheritance, they hope to learn the secrets that she has held onto so tightly their whole lives. Instead, Orqudea is transformed, leaving them with more questions than answers. Seven years later, her gifts have manifested in different ways for Marimar, Rey, and Tatinellys daughter, Rhiannon, granting them unexpected blessings. But soon, a hidden figure begins to tear through their family tree, picking them off one by one as it seeks to destroy Orqudeas line. Determined to save whats left of their family and uncover the truth behind their inheritance, the four descendants travel to Ecuadorto the place where Orqudea buried her secrets and broken promises and never looked backed. Alternating between Orqudeas past and her descendants present, The Inheritance of Orqudea Divina is an enchanting novel about what we knowingly and unknowingly inherit from our ancestors, the ties that bind, and reclaiming your power.

I think Cordova tried to accomplish a bit too much in just one book. I also “wish” the source of the family‘s magic didn‘t come from quite so far afield…but I still enjoyed this magical tale! Perfect for fans of Encanto, The Night Circus, & The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, with themes of family, secrecy, communication, prejudice, mother-daughter relationships, folklore, domestic abuse, & generational trauma.

monalyisha P.S. We went to a local tulip farm to celebrate an early Mother‘s Day this past weekend. They‘re not quite orchids (as would befit the title) but they‘ll do! 2mo

This was really well written. It‘s a story about magic and family drama which I really liked. It did get over complicated in parts and it lost my interest a few times. I liked the characters and the plot and the culture behind everything in the book. I wish it hadn‘t jumped around as much as it did, but I did overall enjoy it.

“I am dying, come collect your inheritance”
this book feels like a YA version of encanto with some darker themes in places. the world is so brilliant, the characters, the magic, the multi-generational story telling is all so well done. I really enjoyed this and was trying to figure out Orquídea‘s past the whole time, but Marimar, Rhi, and Rey were such great characters to focus on as they grow and learn about their grandma postmortem & their magic

Like reading a grown-up version of Disney's Encanto. 💚

I really enjoyed this one. The magic, the story, and all of the characters were a delight to get lost in for a few hours.

This multi-generational family drama was a fantastic journey and is a great example of why I love magical realism in literature.

BrittanyReads Love Encanto! May have to get my hands on a copy of this ☺️ 4mo

I reas this book because I saw it recommended for fans of “Encanto.” It was not Encanto, and I didn‘t expect it to be. But it was good in all the right ways. A rare ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for me. #Libby #audiobook

Okay, so, I KNOW I haven't read this before... but I'm getting such strong deja vu over the first scene inside the house. Is there another book that happened in, because I'm starting to second guess whether my own grandmother sprouted roots and grew into the ground... 😳

sprainedbrain 😂 I‘ve never read a book with that scene before, but that is funny! 4mo
Johanna414 That scene didn't necessarily feel familiar to me, but I kept seeing similarities between this and Encanto (which my kids had pretty much on repeat the entire time I read it... 🤣) 4mo

I actually hadn't heard a lot about this, but I decided to do the 12 books recommended by 12 friends reading challenge that circulated around and this was one of the picks. And, what a great start. I loved this book! It has been a while since I really read any magic realism and this was a good reminder that I should work it in more often. A really good, character driven story with magic.

This book was fantastic. On the day of her death Orquidea gathers her family to her so that she can give them their Inheritance and then she literally transforms into a tree. Seven years later after a few of the family members die questionably Marimar, Rey and Rhiannon start searching for answers to Orquidea's history.

I loved the magic and descriptions in this novel. The author created a unique magical world in modern day that was refreshing. I did this as an audiobook which was fine but I think I would have followed it better reading because there are lots of characters and time jumps to keep track of. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

This book was so magical!!! It gave me Practical Magic and Stardust vibes in places with a strong dose of The Book of Speculation -- but is really its own thing! Cannot recommend highly enough if you're looking for something magical with strong story and lore but don't want to start a new series. 🔮🌿

Linsy Jenny Lawson put it perfectly: “Like an Ecuadorian Grimm fairy tale that takes place in modern times and also has a fair amount of cursing and booze and ghosts and should be read at midnight around a camp fire.“ ❤❤❤ 8mo

I enjoyed this. I love magical realism, I wish it had been a bit denser, but the weaving of the family stories was well done and it was a quick read that kept my attention. I might need to read it again, as I kept getting confused on the characters, which is my fault not the authors.

Orquídea Divina has lived a life her grandchildren and family don‘t know anything about until she invited them to her funeral and to collect their inheritance.

I loved this magical realism story. The writing and characters were amazing and I loved how intricate the author was in weaving stories inside this story. The story kind of reminded me of Stardust but completely it‘s own at the same time. Probably be rereading this book a lot.

I loved this book! If I have one bad thing to say, it‘s that the ending felt a little rushed, but otherwise it was so good! I loved the way the Montoyas just accepted magic, and the voice of the narrator was very amusing. The ending was a little predictable, and I wish we‘d spent more time at the circus, but I really enjoyed this book.

Time for a quick book recap…
Tagged: slow and rich, with a worthy payoff.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Wine & Punishment: a cozy mystery set in a literary pub built into an old stone mill building … what‘s not to enjoy?
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Westaway: not shocking, not groundbreaking, but a great, chilly, atmospheric fall read that still had a little surprise or two in store for me.

Brutal: it was brutal. And a bit heartbreaking. 🥲

A magically-tinged, creepy story that includes family secrets, a curse, a circus, & some portal magic. The dual narrative came together really well & slowly but mysteriously unraveled the story. The magical realism is fun & intriguing with beautiful atmosphere. Fun & unique characters with some great character arcs. There is a LOT going on & it can sometimes get a little confusing, but just enjoy the ride. I enjoyed this from start to finish.

Thanks to #partner @netgalley and @atriabooks for the digital ARC of Zoraida Córdova's The Inheritance of Orquídea Divina in exchange for an honest review. The book is now available for purchase!⠀

This beautiful novel begins with a letter. Orquídea Montoya is dying, so she calls her relatives to her home in Four Rivers to claim their inheritance. She‘s lost touch with most of them, driven them away with her secret keeping and stubbornness. ⬇

UnabridgedPod Still, each has been marked in some way by their relationship.

Orquídea‘s home is fueled by magic, a magic she brought with her when she moved to Four Rivers from Ecuador decades ago. And then she never left. When her family—and especially her grandchildren Marimar, Rey, and Tatinelly—arrive, they find that Orquídea is becoming a tree, transforming as she sits, helpless in the center of her home.
