Food and Literature | Gitanjali G. Shahani
71 posts | 3 to read
This volume examines food as subject, form, landscape, polemic, and aesthetic statement in literature. With essays analyzing food and race, queer food, intoxicated poets, avant-garde food writing, vegetarianism, the recipe, the supermarket, food comics, and vampiric eating, this collection brings together fascinating work from leading scholars in the field. It is the first volume to offer an overview of literary food studies and reflect on its origins, developments, and applications. Taking up maxims such as 'we are what we eat', it traces the origins of literary food studies and examines key questions in cultural texts from different global literary traditions. It charts the trajectories of the field in relation to work in critical race studies, postcolonial studies, and children's literature, positing an omnivorous method for the field at large.

yourfavouritemixtape I‘m not sure I will manage yet another reading challenge, but this sounds so fun. So yes please, I‘d like to be on the tag list 🙂 6mo
Laughterhp Hey, can you please take me off the list? I was unable to participate at all this year, so don‘t think I‘ll be able to next year either. Thanks! 6mo
Catsandbooks @Laughterhp no problem! 👍🏼 6mo
Captivatedbybooks How does this work? 6mo
Texreader @Captivatedbybooks Read a book set in or by an author from the country during its respective month, and try to enjoy one traditional recipe/meal from that country. All completely voluntary—participate the whole year or when you can 6mo
Tineke Can you add me to the tag list? Thank you! 5mo
Catsandbooks @Tineke added you! 😊 5mo
Tineke Thank you! I'm so looking forward to this. Is there a master list of books set in the selected countries? I have King Peggy by Peggielene Bartels and Eleanor Herman on my wishlist. And it's about a naturalized American woman who becomes the king of a village in Ghana. It's non fiction. This story has interested me for years, so high time to acquire this. The wikipedia is interesting too and will send me down a rabbit hole I'm sure. 5mo
Catsandbooks @Tineke Yes we will have a master book list where suggestions can be made! There's currently one for 2023 too! As it gets closer to the end of the year there will be more resources being posted 😉 5mo
vonnie862 Ooh I would like to join! 5mo

Libby1 I think I will, @Butterfinger . I‘m not very good at cooking or baking so I may source the food from restaurants or bakeries. 😊 2y
Butterfinger @Libby1 that is exactly what I do. I have been pretty lucky so far except for last month's Zambia. 😁 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick @Libby1 This year I've been so bad with the food portion that I've only had a banana from Guatemala. 🤣🤣🤣 I'll be enjoying some Mexican food this month, though. 2y
Texreader @Libby1 I‘m adding you to our group list. Yay!!! 2y
Texreader @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick But your book reviews are so darned awesome—we all learn so much from you I think we can forgive you for missing the food half of the challenge. 😉😂 But Mexican food is very hard to pass up anytime! 2y
Texreader @Libby1 @Butterfinger When it‘s available I absolutely order out! But oh my gosh I found this Moroccan style steak and couscous my grocery store prepares to cook at home and it‘s now a staple. So don‘t underestimate your local grocery store! I so scored on that find when we had #Morocco month. 2y
Sapphire I have Yacoubian Building somewhere in my TBR so I think that will be my January read for Egypt. But here is a list for anyone searching: https://www.newyorker.com/books/page-turner/an-egypt-fiction-reading-list 2y
Texreader @Sapphire thanks!! 2y
Sapphire @Texreader I will remember tags in the future! Thanks for hosting these events. Looking forward and so excited my title is also a ROOT for me! 2y
Sapphire Planning is so fun! With my Egypt book selected I started looking for Argentina In February with an eye to also finding books I already own. Bingo! Fictions is on my tbr. Haven‘t read Borges since high school and that was in Spanish class. If folks are double teaming it with “books in translation” here is a list set in Argentina by LA authors : https://taleaway.com/books-set-in-argentina/ @Texreader @Butterfinger @Catsandbooks 2y
Texreader @Sapphire Yay! Thanks so much! 2y
Sapphire So I found 10 titles in my tbr and will post later. I don‘t have Kenya or Haiti so will go to the library for those when it gets closer rather than picking now. But this looks like a good list for Kenya: https://www.theuncorkedlibrarian.com/books-about-kenya/ 2y

Catsandbooks @TheBookHippie no worries! I started helping out with images earlier in the year and am officially co-hosting in 2022 ☺️ 3y
TEArificbooks I just found a great Jamaican restaurant near me. I nominate Jamaica. I also liked how there was a variety of countries from different continents and they were spread out throughout the year. That way we were not eating very similar foods in back to back months. I also nominate France. 3y
SamAnne I hope to participate more next year! I have followed it done some reads and cooking. I nominate Spain! 3y
TheBookHippie @Catsandbooks ♥️♥️♥️ how fun! I love this challenge so much. 3y
Sapphire I did not see this in 2021 but I want to follow and participate in 2022!! I nominate Turkey if you did not do it in 2021 ( going to try and go back through hashtags). (edited) 3y

Texreader @mdm139 @butterfinger picked two countries from each continent and I picked their months based on big events in those countries. Getting it off the ground was a lot of fun! Thanks for your nominees! @catsandbooks then joined in with all the artwork and energy! 3y
