This is every reader's catch-22: the more you read, the more you realize you haven't read; the more you yearn to read more, the more you understand that you have, in fact, read nothing. There is no way to finish, and perhaps that shouldn't be the goal.

Halfway through this, and though it‘s quite long (editor must have not been very liberal with their red pen), I am enjoying the pace and storyline.

And there we have it. Page 94 of this book (The Black Arc Of It) grabbed me, sank it's teeth in and now I can cry and breathe and make sense of my anger and pain.

I would put the quote here, but I would be typing this out word for word, line for line.

Thank god for this book.

The Slap: A Novel | Christos Tsiolkas
Bailedbailed

I waited for the buzz around this book to die down.

I waited for the buzz around the miniseries to die down.

Finally, I put it on my audiobook reserve list through my public library app and one month later it was mine to listen to. Not 45 minutes into it and I had to abandon it.

I'm no prude, but hearing the C word used to describe how the 1st character thinks of women in the opening paragraph made me feel like shit. No thanks, Christos.

TheWintergarden Yes felt the same way about this one when it was included on a uni reading list. Had issues with creepy comments harry makes. He lusts after a young female much younger than he. It seemed to celebrate a misogyny of patriarchal culture. This could be educational if it is demonstrating the hideous male privilege that undoubtedly exists in our culture but unfortunately the scene was going to be glossed over as nothing. Not acceptable. 1y
Croissonter I would have failed the unit this book was assigned to as reading material... Kudos to you for getting through it! 1y

The problem is the puer ever anticipates loss, disappointment, and suffering - which they foresee at the end of every experience, so they cut themselves off at the beginning, retreating almost at once in order to protect themselves.

Less: A Novel | Andrew Sean Greer

"Twenty years of joy and support and friendship, that's a success. Twenty years of anything with another person is a success. If a band stays together twenty years, it's a miracle. If a comedy duo stays together twenty years, that's a triumph. Is this night a failure because it will end in an hour? Is the sun a failure because it's going to end in billion years? No, it's the fucking sun. Why does a marriage not count?... Let's end on success."
