Literature and Food Studies | Amy L. Tigner, Allison Carruth
59 posts | 2 to read
Literature and Food Studies introduces readers to a growing interdisciplinary field by examining literary genres and cultural movements as they engage with the edible world and, in turn, illuminate transnational histories of empire, domesticity, scientific innovation, and environmental transformation and degradation. With a focus on the Americas and Europe, Literature and Food Studies compares works of imaginative literature, from Ovids Metamorphoses and Shakespeares The Winters Tale to James Joyces Ulysses and Toni Morrisons Tar Baby, with what the authors define as vernacular literary practiceswhich take written form as horticultural manuals, recipes, cookbooks, restaurant reviews, agricultural manifestos, dietary treatises, and culinary guides. For those new to its principal subject, Literature and Food Studies introduces core concepts in food studies that span anthropology, geography, history, literature, and other fields; it compares canonical literary texts with popular forms of print culture; and it aims to inspire future research and teaching. Combining a cultural studies approach to foodways and food systems with textual analysis and archival research, the book offers an engaging and lucid introduction for humanities scholars and students to the rapidly expanding field of food studies.

Chrissyreadit Thank you! 2y
Chrissyreadit I will be honest- my struggle was being diagnosed with diabetes last month and trying to get used to the diet I‘m following- it felt intimidating to prepare unfamiliar food. But that being said I know there is a fruit mix with mango and papaya in one of my recipes. ❤️ 2y

My Norwegian meatballs were sooooo good. This meal is a keeper. Although, Chaya was hesitant because she knows about the reindeer sausage. The recipe says to eat the lingonberry jam on top of the meatballs and it works.

She read Master Maid - a folktale retold by Aaron Shepard. I could not find it in the database. It reminded me of the Jack Tales.

We don‘t have a plate big enough to do the family-size thing so this is my plate with the bread, injera, from top left, goman alicha (cabbage potatoes and carrots), chickpeas (didn‘t get the Ethiopian name), tibsi (beef stew), and lamb tibs (lamb stew). Delicious, especially the lamb. #Ethiopia #foodandlit @Butterfinger @Catsandbooks

JamieArc Oh man. We have a wonderful Ethiopian restaurant that I haven‘t been to since before the pandemic. I‘m going to be craving it now! 3y
Butterfinger It's so colorful. 3y

Catsandbooks Looks so good! What did you think of the injera? 3y
Texreader @JamieArc Yes indeed! 3y
Texreader @MySharonaK I think you‘re right since I just googled it. 3y
Texreader @Catsandbooks @butterfinger Injera was different. The smell is off-putting but the taste was fine, although I got tired of it pretty quickly mainly because Daughter and I used it as our utensil to eat the other items and were full within minutes! As I was shoveling away the leftovers I tried some with the soaked-in stew and it was so delicious. So we decided we‘ll layer the leftovers on injera and let it soak up the goodness & use forks! ☺️ 3y

We have eaten and discussed three nations so far. As I was finishing up one of my Ethiopian reads, I started thinking of the similarities. Africa, South America, and Asia have all been represented and I see similarities. Does anyone else? Any thoughts? What about with the food?

#FoodandLit @Texreader @Catsandbooks

Chrissyreadit One thought I have is that I have been taught so many negative views about those countries, and i have loved so many things that get overlooked. 3y
See All 17 Comments
Butterfinger @Chrissyreadit I wonder if the negativity stemmed from the Communist reactionaries. That was what made me start thinking. I knew about Vietnam, but didn't realize how America gave money and inhumane thugs (diplomats) to Brazil to fight the spread of Communism. And in Ethiopia. I just never knew. And all the purges because of dictatorship. Thanks for responding. 3y
TheBookHippie @Chrissyreadit the beauty is always there. Makes you wonder if we taught the beauty of country and people as a number one and anything negative as as a side note to children how the world would change. Culture days in schools with food and showing beauty constantly would make so many peoples mind set be different ...... 3y
Butterfinger @TheBookHippie that is what I had in school. We sang songs from the different countries and had the food. A few years, we had it here where I teach. 3y
TheBookHippie @Butterfinger we just started it up again in 2019 here ... 3y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick The effects of war and influence from the "white occupation" are the similarities I've picked up on so far. 3y
Butterfinger @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick yes. There was always a European influence. Thanks for responding. 3y
Butterfinger @Chrissyreadit @TheBookHippie ☕. I cannot believe that the first three countries are known for distinct coffee. Crazy. 3y
Chrissyreadit @Butterfinger that‘s true!!! How did I miss that???? 3y
bcncookbookclub Yeah, in the case of Brazil it's completely sure. In our history we received many Africans people and they shared his culinary knowledges with us. We have many influences from African culture in others subjects also... (edited) 3y
Butterfinger @bcncookbookclub I mailed your package. Have you gotten it? @Texreader @Catsandbooks 3y

IndoorDame I only had 4 too, but I‘m really enjoying #foodandlit! 3y
DebinHawaii Are we posting them here @Texreader & @Butterfinger or do you want us to make a post? I had 6 tagged posts from 1/11-1/31 + 10 points from the game so I guess 16. (Apparently I‘m highly motivated by 🍫🍫!)😋🤣 And I just went back & read the post fully so I‘ll make a post & tag @Catsandbooks too! (edited) 3y

My final post for #FoodandLit #Brazil. I completed 2 short books, one about convent girls, published in 1937 & the other street youths, published in 1939.🤷🏻‍♀️I guess I went for older books about young people! I enjoyed an Acai bowl at my favorite coffee shop & made Creamy Brazilian Black Bean Soup & found some locally made Brazilian-style cheese bread. 😋 And, I listened to a lot of Samba & Bossa Nova music 🎵 on my Spotify Playlist (link ⬇️)

Butterfinger Thanks for participating. I hope it was enjoyable. 3y

DebinHawaii I‘ve got 4 hours of January left & trying to finish my 2nd book! 😉 3y
Texreader @DebinHawaii Hope you can make it! I‘m too far from finishing my last Brazil book for the month so it‘ll just have to go into February. 3y
BarbaraBB I‘m still waiting for another #Brazil book, but will just read it it February 😀 3y
Cinfhen I only read one book but I LOVED IT 3y
sblbooks Well, I'm a month behind, but I'm going to read the Seven Sisters. 3y
Butterfinger You have the greatest ideas. 3y
Jerdencon I read 2 books and enjoyed both! Still need to make my Brazilian ham and cheese casserole for dinner - one of these days! This has been fun! 3y
Jerdencon @sblbooks I read the Seven Sisters and really liked it. The next book In the series takes place in Norway so I‘m waiting until we are doing Norway to read that one, 3y
TheBookHippie I found a new author I loved, Clarice Lispector, a couple new recipes to keep in rotation and did a virtual tour of Brazil. So much fun! On to Pho! 3y
Crazeedi @Jerdencon @sblbooks the series is amazing, I have read them all, and waiting for number 7!! 3y
Liz_M I enjoyed seeing all the food and snacks people had. The vegetarian feijoada I made is very good and a huge amount of food -- I'll being eating the frozen portions well into February! 😅 Also happy to see all the Lispector love. 3y
TheAromaofBooks I enjoyed reading a travel guide about Brazil way more than I thought I would - I already started one for Vietnam today! 😂 3y
ElizaMarie I didn't do enough Brazil things. I was unable to get a hold of any Brazilian food (but with the recent move I just didn't have the time I wanted) I did read 2 books (one re-read of an old favorite and one new one - which I really enjoyed) I loved reading the articles about Brazil that were posted in this challenge. I love this challenge and am looking forward to Vietnam! 3y

AnneCecilie Vietnam: Tet Holiday on the 13th and 14th. Norway: Constitution Day on the 17th (that seems to be cancelled this year too, at least the normal celebration). Russia: Russia Day on the 12th. Mexico: Revolution Day Memorial on the 20th (and a day off on the 15th) 3y
Catsandbooks 😘😘 3y
DebinHawaii Vietnam: New Year (Tet) 2/12, Norway: Constitution Day 5/17, Russia: Russia Day 6/12 (or 6/14), Mexico: All Saints 11/1, All Souls 11/2, Revolution Day 11/15 or 11/20, Christ the King Day 11/21 3y
Texreader While @debinhawaii named all the correct holidays that were the basis for the country assignment (Mexico holiday was the Day of the Dead), @AnneCecilie had a very good answer for Mexico as well and responded first. So both of you win the quiz and should add 10 points to your scores for the #foodandlit chocolate giveaway. Watch for at least one more quiz before Jan 31 to earn extra points! @Butterfinger @Catsandbooks (edited) 3y
Texreader @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick @Cinfhen So sorry! I needed all four! 3y
DebinHawaii Woot! 🎉 Yeah @AnneCecilie I just named every holiday per country I could find. 😉Mexico is full of them in November! 3y

Bookwormjillk We tried Brazi bites today. We think we‘ll like Vietnamese food better 3y
Butterfinger As I look for recipes, I am going to be mindful of everyone's needs - vegan, gluten free, lactose free. If anyone sees something, please share and we'll get it on the board. Poor Karen, I don't cook so I'm over here googling restaurants. 😂 But, I will try to look for recipes. My husband is the cook. 3y
Catsandbooks I'm on pinterest a fair amount so I can look for recipes too and send them! 3y

Texreader @Tove_Reads Awesome!! Please share recipes when you find some. I‘ll get them into the Pinterest board 3y

Texreader @Catsandbooks I loved it. Daughter thought it was too sweet but I didn‘t get that at all. A very nice mild flavor. 3y
Catsandbooks @Texreader ooo sounds great! I need to try it! 3y
Texreader @Butterfinger No truffles for me and tiny bite of the cake. Lactaid pills don‘t work. You must have intuited how sick I got after trying tiny pieces of the cheese bites from the bakery. I knew the pills didn‘t work for me but I was desperate to try the cheese bites. And I was violently ill shortly thereafter for the rest of the day. 😕 3y
Texreader @valeriegeary @BookishMarginalia The chicken was crazy delicious and super easy to make. Highly recommended 3y
Texreader @Catsandbooks Yea it‘s worth it. Really good 3y
Butterfinger I'm sorry. I was really hoping you could take them. 3y
FelinesAndFelonies @Texreader if those are the cheesy bread bites my husband and I call them "Angel Balls" because we are both convinced they must be a delicacy in heaven. 3y
FelinesAndFelonies @Texreader Pao de Queijo? Maybe? 3y
Texreader @FelinesAndFelonies Yes! That‘s it! 3y

Food haul from the Brazilian bakery today: brigadeiro, cold chocolate cake (wrapped in cloth), pao de queijo (cheese bread), Guarana soda, and coxinha. We also got some strawberry (left) and hibiscus (right) agua fresca at the #Mexico booth nearby.

We‘ve only tried the cheese bread and coxinha so far and they were delicious although I only had tiny bites because of my lactose intolerance. #foodandlit #Brazil @Butterfinger

Moonprismpower Oooh this looks awesome. And cake wrapped in cloth? That‘s cool and fancy. 3y

Whoohoo! The Brazilian bakery was at the farmers market on this gorgeous Sunday morning! Photo of our food haul to come. Thanks to #foodandlit I probably never would have tried this bakery. #Brazil @Butterfinger
