Nancy Drew 02: The Hidden Staircase
Nancy Drew 02: The Hidden Staircase | Carolyn Keene
After receiving a call from her friend Helen Corning, Nancy agrees to help solve a baffling mystery. Helen's Aunt Rosemary has been living with her mother at the old family mansion, and they have noticed many strange things. They have heard music, thumps, and creaking noises at night, and seen eerie shadows on the walls. Could the house be haunted? Just as soon as she hangs up the phone, a strange man visits Nancy's house to warn her and her father that they are in danger because of a case he is working on buying property for a railroad company. This warning leads Nancy and her father Carson to search for the missing Willie Wharton, a landowner, who can prove he signed away his land to the railroad and save the railroad from a lawsuit. Will Nancy be able to find the missing landowner and discover how these mysteries are related?

Bestselling YA author Maureen Johnson and Nancy Drew β€” it‘s a mystery dream team… and it was such a treat for me to be part of it on the latest episode of my podcast. BIG thanks to Maureen Johnson for joining me on Episode 149 for a conversation about the second book in the iconic series, The Hidden Staircase, in which we talk about Nancy‘s legacy, the story‘s wild twists and turns, Nancy‘s lunch breaks, and more. Thanks @Annie1215 for the tag!

1. On the staircase landing. We have a U shaped staircase, wide enough for a corner shelf. We‘re always in need of more shelves, so the local authors of Michigan books go there.

2. No live pets. But I certainly have some cute and fuzzy stuffed animals who keep me company while I read!

In the midst of all of my buddy reads, a part of my brain was like, "What's that Nancy Drew book where she runs up & down a staircase to figure out which steps don't creak?" ? I had to read it again immediately despite having read it probably 52 times when I was young. Pure nostalgia #braincandy. Nancy knows how to get an owl out of a room! Hannah cooks a 4 course meal no matter what the hell goes down! The bad guys are always scowling! Love it.

Cathythoughts That‘s funny ! That book I read recently... The Hours Before Dawn ... there was a part about how to put your foot completely flat on the the step of the stair that creaks ! No sound then ! We have one creaking step on our stairs !! It works ... flat foot , no bending the foot & it really doesn‘t creak πŸ‘πŸ»β™₯οΈπŸ˜‚ (edited) 4y

Just finished this for my adaptation book club. It was fine. The movie looks like a really fun romp. I can already tell it will be very loosely based on the book. I am fine with that.

For some reason I remembered Nancy drew as scrappy and resourceful. Sheβ€˜s not that at all. I was shocked at how privileged and traditional she was. I already like movie Nancy better.

Trailer link: https://youtu.be/knPrLVBn93w

BookBabe I didn‘t know there were movies about Nancy! I‘ll have to check them out. Thanks for sharing. 4y

Third book down for #nancydrewchallenge and I finished this in one day! Hubby challenged me to do it, then actually encouraged me to finish it tonight (he timed me!).

An enjoyable, very dated, mystery involving secret passages, a haunted mansion, a kidnapping, and some shady business dealings. All resolved by the girl detective herself!

LibrarianRyan I‘m doing the challenge but have yet to read an actual Nancy Drew book. I will. I have the first 8. 4y

Having just finished a modern Nancy Drew novel, with a β€œhaunted” house plot, I really appreciated reading this one. The way Nancy stayed cool, calm, & collected during eerie scenes was definitely different from her reactions in the modern plot. Although it might be unrealistic, Nancy‘s confidence in such situations feels reassuring to this reader. Though, I have to admit that certain parts of the plot felt like a Scooby-Doo mystery.

Chelsibno By the way, wouldn‘t it have been awesome if the Scooby gang had met Nancy Drew in an episode of The New Scooby-Doo Movies and helped her solve a case? 4y

Book two for #24in48 is done! While highly predictable and very convenient, I enjoyed this story of 18-year-old Nancy Drew solving the mysteries of a ghost in a mansion and her father‘s disappearance. Unlikely? Yes. But to a young girl, inspirational. I remember loving these stories as a kid. And there‘s still something there to entice me as an adult. 3.5/5⭐️

I liked the second book more because the first few chapters actually spooked me to the point of leaving me on edge. 😬 The funny thing though is the hidden staircase doesn‘t actually appear in the book till later. The title should‘ve been The Ghost at Twin Elms Mansion since the setting was 90% of the story. 🀞the third book will be even scarier!

This must be my absolute favorite mystery. I can, in an instant, feel the same excitement now I felt decades ago opening a Nancy Drew book then waiting for the next and the next in the series. It was the beginning of my love for reading. What memories! :::sigh::: #GONEBABYGONE

BarbaraTheBibliophage I just bought Nancy Drew 1 for my granddaughter today! The best books ever. πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ“šπŸ“š 6y
Mcoun I felt the same way! 6y
MatchlessMarie I don't know if you have seen the new show Trial and Error on NBC but I always figured their character "Carol Anne Keane" was a nod to this author ? 6y

Dolly @BarbaraTheBibliophage Nancy Drew was older than I was so it was cool to read about a girl that could drive. I hope your granddaughter feels that 'magic'! @Mcoun I'm wondering if part of the excitement was from the fact that reading books was frowned upon by a father who was old school. If you weren't sweating and tired you were loafing when work needed to be done. I've been pushing books on people ever since😊 6y
Dolly @MatchlessMarie I haven't seen it. I watch very little TV. No longer having a TV schedule guide I usually don't bother looking. More time to read ? I wish! 6y
Books88 I loved reading these when I was younger ❀❀❀ 6y
Dolly @AJBowers I just may pick up a few of these if I find any at a garage sale. 6y

Very old copy that was given to me by my aunt when I was little. It was my cousins. I thought it got lost I had given it to my oldest come to find out it was in a box of her stuff in my basement

Stephanie-Anne I have this one too! Nancy Drew was my favorite...❀ 6y
Melli Mines to, I actually bought a few for my oldest for Christmas a few years ago books 1-5 and then a few random ones from five below she still hasn't read them.. But she has them with her books because it's a semi collection. I might have to just read them and relive my childhood. 6y

#17booklove Day 26: Loved when I was 10. The Nancy Drew series was my favorite. I would read one right after another all summer long.
