The Hidden Staircase
The Hidden Staircase | Carolyn Keene
This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1917 edition. Excerpt: ... (6) Columns for Discount on Purchases and Discount on Notes on the same side of the Cash Book; (c) Columns for Discount on Sales and Cash Sales on the debit side of the Cash Book; (d) Departmental columns in the Sales Book and in the Purchase Book. Controlling Accounts.--The addition of special columns in books of original entry makes possible the keeping of Controlling Accounts. The most common examples of such accounts are Accounts Receivable account and Accounts Payable account. These summary accounts, respectively, displace individual customers' and creditors' accounts in the Ledger. The customers' accounts are then segregated in another book called the Sales Ledger or Customers' Ledger, while the creditors' accounts are kept in the Purchase or Creditors' Ledger. The original Ledger, now much reduced in size, is called the General Ledger. The Trial Balance now refers to the accounts in the General Ledger. It is evident that the task of taking a Trial Balance is greatly simplified because so many fewer accounts are involved. A Schedule of Accounts Receivable is then prepared, consisting of the balances found in the Sales Ledger, and its total must agree with the balance of the Accounts Receivable account shown in the Trial Balance. A similar Schedule of Accounts Payable, made up of all the balances in the Purchase Ledger, is prepared, and it must agree with the balance of the Accounts Payable account of the General Ledger." The Balance Sheet.--In the more elementary part of the text, the student learned how to prepare a Statement of Assets and Liabilities for the purpose of disclosing the net capital of an enterprise. In the present chapter he was shown how to prepare a similar statement, the Balance Sheet. For all practical...

It's been a bit since I've posted, but that doesn't mean I haven't been reading. :) Lately, I've been working on the goal of getting through the whole Nancy Drew series this year. These are easy reads and so much fun!! #mystery #nancydrew #readinggoal #fiction #girldetective

Did anyone know they made another Nancy Drew movie?!? #page2screen

In the midst of all of my buddy reads, a part of my brain was like, "What's that Nancy Drew book where she runs up & down a staircase to figure out which steps don't creak?" ? I had to read it again immediately despite having read it probably 52 times when I was young. Pure nostalgia #braincandy. Nancy knows how to get an owl out of a room! Hannah cooks a 4 course meal no matter what the hell goes down! The bad guys are always scowling! Love it.

Cathythoughts That‘s funny ! That book I read recently... The Hours Before Dawn ... there was a part about how to put your foot completely flat on the the step of the stair that creaks ! No sound then ! We have one creaking step on our stairs !! It works ... flat foot , no bending the foot & it really doesn‘t creak 👍🏻♥️😂 (edited) 5mo
gradcat I loved, loved, loved Nancy Drew!! Did you ever play any of the Nancy Drew adventure games? I used to play those on my computer—they were really fun! 5mo
RealLifeReading Fun! I realize though that I never really read much Nancy Drew when I was young. How odd 5mo

saresmoore 👏😂 Best review! 5mo
erzascarletbookgasm 😆 I haven‘t revisited Nancy Drew in my adult life! 🤔 And I learnt something today @Cathythoughts 😁👍 5mo
batsy @Cathythoughts Oh, that's a great tip 😁 Nancy's one is to hug the walls when using the stairs. Or do a weird staircase arithmetic by jumping from one not-creaky spot to another 😂 5mo
batsy @gradcat No, I didn't! I feel like I missed out 😆 5mo
batsy @RealLifeReading I read too much of it 🙈 Absolutely fun to read as an adult when you want that nostalgia comfort read without having to work your brain at all, @erzascarletbookgasm 😁 5mo
rubyslippersreads @RealLifeReading I never read much Nancy Drew as a child either, but found a lovely set of reproduction vintage editions at a thrift shop, so I can catch up. 😊 5mo

LeahBergen And now I feel like revisiting Nancy, too. 😆😆 5mo

rohit-sawant Love this post! 😂 I haven't read Nancy Drew yet. Need to change that soon! 5mo
JazzFeathers Oh l love that 1920s looking Nancy Drew cover. But, are Nancy's stories really that old? 5mo
readordierachel 😆😆 5mo
batsy @Leftcoastzen Isn't if fabulous. @JazzFeathers I believe the first book came out in 1930, and this is one of the early ones. 5mo
batsy @LeahBergen Haha! My job here is done 😁 @rohit-sawant When you're in the mood for something silly and formulaic, it's great fun 😆 5mo
gradcat @batsy I believe you‘ve turned loads of folks into Nancy Drew fans—marvelous! 5mo
BiblioLitten Roald Dahl does this to me. Or Famous Five. Even Goosebumps (the mummy series) #braincandy 😍♥️ 5mo

Just finished this for my adaptation book club. It was fine. The movie looks like a really fun romp. I can already tell it will be very loosely based on the book. I am fine with that.

For some reason I remembered Nancy drew as scrappy and resourceful. She‘s not that at all. I was shocked at how privileged and traditional she was. I already like movie Nancy better.

Trailer link: https://youtu.be/knPrLVBn93w

BookBabe I didn‘t know there were movies about Nancy! I‘ll have to check them out. Thanks for sharing. 5mo
WhatDeeReads @BookBabe no problem! I added the link to the trailer if you wanted to see. There‘s another one that‘s older, like 200), different actress. 5mo

Third book down for #nancydrewchallenge and I finished this in one day! Hubby challenged me to do it, then actually encouraged me to finish it tonight (he timed me!).

An enjoyable, very dated, mystery involving secret passages, a haunted mansion, a kidnapping, and some shady business dealings. All resolved by the girl detective herself!

LibrarianRyan I‘m doing the challenge but have yet to read an actual Nancy Drew book. I will. I have the first 8. 6mo
ravenlee @LibrarianRyan I have the whole set of 56 - I collected them for my daughter. I plan to skip one or two that are just ridiculous (one has a subplot involving exploding oranges), but the rest are on deck. 6mo
TiredLibrarian @ravenlee Oh, this brings back memories! I loved these growing up. Can't say I remember exploding oranges, though 🤔🍊😜 6mo

Having just finished a modern Nancy Drew novel, with a “haunted” house plot, I really appreciated reading this one. The way Nancy stayed cool, calm, & collected during eerie scenes was definitely different from her reactions in the modern plot. Although it might be unrealistic, Nancy‘s confidence in such situations feels reassuring to this reader. Though, I have to admit that certain parts of the plot felt like a Scooby-Doo mystery.

Chelsibno By the way, wouldn‘t it have been awesome if the Scooby gang had met Nancy Drew in an episode of The New Scooby-Doo Movies and helped her solve a case? 9mo

So mysterious! This one starts many Nancy-isms, such as concussions or attempts at them, kidnapping, murder attempts, a sweet little old lady, and helping out a random friend. Fun read. #24in48 #nancydrew @24in48

Book two for #24in48 is done! While highly predictable and very convenient, I enjoyed this story of 18-year-old Nancy Drew solving the mysteries of a ghost in a mansion and her father‘s disappearance. Unlikely? Yes. But to a young girl, inspirational. I remember loving these stories as a kid. And there‘s still something there to entice me as an adult. 3.5/5⭐️

Annl I may reread a Nancy Drew book this weekend! 12mo
Soubhiville Yay Nancy Drew!! 12mo
Jules7 I read most of these as a child. Being raised in a “children are seen and not heard” family, I spent a lot of time at my grandmothers house reading. Nancy Drew/Hardy Boys and The Bobbsey Twins were always available on their shelves. Still bring back fond memories. (edited) 12mo
UwannaPublishme Yay! You finished 2 books! I may need to revisit Nance Drew. Sounds like a perfect readathon choice. 😊🙌🏻 12mo
PurpleyPumpkin @Annl @Soubhiville @Jules7 @UwannaPublishme This was a great read for the ‘thon. And I have to say that I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. I read this as a child but this was my first reread as an adult and I still enjoyed it. It brought back a lot of good memories. 💜 12mo

I liked the second book more because the first few chapters actually spooked me to the point of leaving me on edge. 😬 The funny thing though is the hidden staircase doesn‘t actually appear in the book till later. The title should‘ve been The Ghost at Twin Elms Mansion since the setting was 90% of the story. 🤞the third book will be even scarier!

This must be my absolute favorite mystery. I can, in an instant, feel the same excitement now I felt decades ago opening a Nancy Drew book then waiting for the next and the next in the series. It was the beginning of my love for reading. What memories! :::sigh::: #GONEBABYGONE

MatchlessMarie I don't know if you have seen the new show Trial and Error on NBC but I always figured their character "Carol Anne Keane" was a nod to this author ? 2y

Dolly @BarbaraTheBibliophage Nancy Drew was older than I was so it was cool to read about a girl that could drive. I hope your granddaughter feels that 'magic'! @Mcoun I'm wondering if part of the excitement was from the fact that reading books was frowned upon by a father who was old school. If you weren't sweating and tired you were loafing when work needed to be done. I've been pushing books on people ever since😊 2y
Dolly @MatchlessMarie I haven't seen it. I watch very little TV. No longer having a TV schedule guide I usually don't bother looking. More time to read ? I wish! 2y

Here are a few of my Mom's Nancy Drew mysteries from the 1930s. Nancy has been updated through the years, but I always picture her in silhouette with magnifying glass in hand. #BookNLunch! I'm re-reading some of my childhood favorites as a stress reducer. All the adult books have too many adult problems! 😒 I made a traditional brunch for @MrBook , but I was in the mood for something else, so I fixed a freshly made egg salad sandwich with crisp iceberg lettuce on toasted fresh peasant bread, with a garlic pickle. My version of #literarystationary for #augustofpages #photochallenge. An awesome Nancy Drew notebook (that I still haven't decided what I'm going to use it for,), my little word notebook I keep in my purse with my list of books to buy (just in case I come across a book sale) and the notebook I use to collect quotes and excerpts from books and articles that I want to remember. Books and notebooks go together so well. 🤓

MatildaBaggins I love the comma sticker 😂😂 3y
Hazel0303 I loved the hidden staircase! I used to read Nancy Drew books to my mom in the car when we went on errands and while we were waiting at the doctor - good memories 3y

katedensen Commas DO save lives! ❤️❤️ 3y
BookishFeminist Yes! The Nancy Drew notebook is everything! Our TBR notebooks are very similar too. 😊 3y
Yamich49 @MatildaBaggins @katedfisher Thanks! The comma sticker is def my fave. 3y
Yamich49 @Hazel0303 Me too! The Nancy Drew books are the first books I remember very clearly staying up late to read (like 4-5am late which was very late for my 11 yo self). I'm so thankful that my tiny little local library had them for me to discover. I found a bunch at a yard sale recently and am on a mission to collect them all and do a reread! 3y
Yamich49 @BookishFeminist Right? It's made from an actual recycled book and there are check marks next to some of the books of the series on the back cover - someone was keeping track of their collection! I haven't used it yet - may save it for our Litsy postal book club thingy. 🤐 And I am not surprised at all that our TBR notebooks are similar, we've established that we are almost the same person right? 😉😆 3y
BookishFeminist @Yamich49 Hahaha I think so! It's ridiculous. Shame we're on opposite coasts! Though I suspect this may actually be a good thing otherwise neither of us would get anything done. That Nancy Drew notebook is even cooler now! It would be perfect for the postal book club. 😍 3y
Yamich49 @BookishFeminist True, I already end up staying up too late having fun with #litsyafterdark and other shenanigans on here. And if we lived near each other I would prob come over all the time with different tv shows to make you watch them all 😆 You would get sick of it real fast lollll 3y
BookishFeminist @Yamich49 NEVER (because that's seriously what I do during all my free time anyway.) and where you'll have the tv shows I'll just bring a giant stack of misandrist books you've never read so 💅🏼I suspect it would even out lol. Read, craft, creep, repeat. 3y
Yamich49 Read, craft, creep, repeat sounds perf. 👌🏼😂 3y
Yamich49 @BookishFeminist oops forgot to tag you in the above supportive comment. 3y
BookishFeminist @Yamich49 😂 all of the essentials for sure 3y

That moment when your 10 year old daughter loves old school Nancy Drew as much as you did at her age.

I read #2 today. It's really interesting rereading these after *so long* and after having read Girl Sleuth, the biography of Nancy and the history and writers behind Nancy Drew (I'll tag in a comment). Oh Nancy. You are my sunshine. (I'm still pissed that the tv show got scrapped by CBS tbh ugh)

JPeterson Loved Nancy Drew growing up. I think I even tried to convince my mom to change my name to George. 😊 3y
TheWellReadOwl ❤️❤️ everything about this picture! It's like I'm that 9 year old again, reading under the covers! ❤️❤️ 3y

Anyone care to join me in a classic "avoid all responsibilities" day in favor of some comfort reads? {my favorite is the Clue in the Diary}

Stephanie-Anne Hidden Staircase! 3y
Marissaleigh @Stephanie-Anne The Hidden Staircase is a close second for me! I'm still looking for a hidden staircase in my house. 3y
