Before the Coffee Gets Cold
Before the Coffee Gets Cold | Toshikazu Kawaguchi
What would you change if you could go back in time? In a small back alley in Tokyo, there is a caf which has been serving carefully brewed coffee for more than one hundred years. But this coffee shop offers its customers a unique experience: the chance to travel back in time. In Before the Coffee Gets Cold, we meet four visitors, each of whom is hoping to make use of the cafs time-travelling offer, in order to: confront the man who left them, receive a letter from their husband whose memory has been taken by early onset Alzheimer's, to see their sister one last time, and to meet the daughter they never got the chance to know. But the journey into the past does not come without risks: customers must sit in a particular seat, they cannot leave the caf, and finally, they must return to the present before the coffee gets cold . . . Toshikazu Kawaguchis beautiful, moving story translated from Japanese by Geoffrey Trousselot explores the age-old question: what would you change if you could travel back in time? More importantly, who would you want to meet, maybe for one last time?

I have no idea whether I liked this or not. I think I liked it, but there were parts that were choppy and seemed oddly inserted into the story. I just don‘t know. Maybe in a few days I‘ll figure it out. 🤷‍♀️

The first book in the series was charming and insightful in its examination of human emotions through the conceit of time travel; the sequel attempts the same lyricism but hits some false notes. Part of the joy of the original stories was how much was left unexplained; this volume tries too hard to fill in the blanks. And it seems to be shifting focus to an annoying child. A bit of a sophomore slump here but I will still check out the next volume.

booklover3258 I'm reading the third book now and the child is not as annoying as in the second book. :) 4d

I need a rating between so so and pick and if there was one I‘d use it for this. The book was a bit so so to begin with but grew closer and closer to a pick as I read it. Not amazing but a gentle tale of human needs, particularly regrets within relationships. Very much about the power of hindsight.

A small coffee shop has an unusual feature: it lets you travel through time. But you can only stay in the shop, anything you do in the past won't change anything, and you had better finish your coffee before it gets cold or there will be consequences. The book is less about people trying to change fate and more about how revisiting events can change one's emotional responses Full of understanding human complexity and generosity for our failings.

MariettaSG Generosity of our failings- nice line 1mo

There were some parts I didn‘t like about this book. Like how Fumiko couldn‘t find a way to get in contact with her boyfriend in this day and age was unrealistic to me. But overall, I did like the story. It was warm, sweet, creative, and well written. Recommend.

A cute concept of time travel in a coffee shop. Poor presentation, repetitive, mundane, and all tell-don't-show. But some powerfully emotional messages still come through. Makes me think on how to change my attitude even though I can't change the past...

I read this book for a library discussion. It was going to be months before I got it at the library so I paid for it and regret it. I cannot believe how wildly popular this book was and still is. I checked out goodreads 1 star ratings and the above sum up my feelings. But I disliked this book so much I felt I‘d share in my own words. I was about 10 pages in when I thought this seems more like a play than a novel. Then I saw the author is a 👇🏻

megnews Playwright and it was a play before it was a book. I had concerns it was the translation to English and also tried to consider the culture difference but I don‘t think that accounts for all of it. Spoiler examples of things that bugged me. Long explanation of what Alzheimer‘s is on p98. Who doesn‘t know this? It was explained as if to a child. P 142 someone crying would make them dehydrated? Possible translation issue but where was the editor? (edited) 3mo
megnews P156 the strange explanation of the steps that could have been different but wouldn‘t have changed the outcome. It was just weird. The third story switches suddenly the character is from the future as opposed to the first two where they were from the present visiting the past. With no explanation. The long uninteresting coffee explanation on p 160 that did nothing to move the narrative forward. The part about the coffee picking it‘s customers 3mo
megnews Was the only part I liked and had it been written like that it would have been lovely. P 162 random men constantly offering apartments and cars but she won‘t take them? If we‘re going to get this strange I‘ll take a Mercedes thanks. The top of page 171 is just weird according to my notes. And page 200. Of course your sisters has hopes & dreams like you. Who the heck doesn‘t? I didn‘t finish the last story. I usually won‘t do a negative review (edited) 3mo
See All 8 Comments
megnews If I don‘t finish a book but I feel justified. Based on the blurb I expected something moving like For One More Day by Mitch Albom. Based on the setting (a cafe) I should have loved this. Based on the reviews I expected something profound. This is the worst book I‘ve ever read and far surpasses whatever the next worst was. I can‘t imagine anything ever knocking it out of this place. I‘m so sorry for this review to all those who loved this book. (edited) 3mo
Ann_Reads A fair review with some good insights, Meg. That's even more disappointing, after purchasing the book. The negative reviews for this book have scared me off from reading it. I'm fairly certain I won't like it, as is the case with some other popular, overly hyped books that I have tried reading in the past. 3mo

This is the next library book discussion mom and I are doing in March. This book was published in 2020! I‘m shocked that I can‘t get a digital copy in major Ohio libraries for months. Paper copies at Clevnet also very limited.

BarbaraJean My book group was wanting to read this in February, and we decided to postpone the pick till later in the year because there was such a long wait at our various libraries (Los Angeles and Orange County)! I‘m taking that as a good sign for once we do finally read it! (edited) 3mo

It's an emotional read which will warm your heart, break it and also make you laugh. It's definitely more focused on the characters and their stories rather than the time travelling, which I enjoyed.

Like my previous read, I would have enjoyed this book more if it had been more in depth, but this is always a risk you take with shorter books. As it was I think the author did a really good job and I think many readers would appreciate this book.

suvata I loved that book 5mo
Sarahannereadsbooks I really enjoyed it, but there were just little minor things. For example, I would have enjoyed getting the background story of the ghost. 5mo

4.5⭐️ The book is about a coffee shop with a chair, yes “that chair“ that allows you to travel back in time. A lot of feelings were brought to the surface during this read, and while at some points the book felt a little cold, the more that I read, the more connected with the characters. By the end of the book I was crying into a box of Kleenex. It‘s a super cute story that is a little unconventional but heartwarming. #bookspinbingo space #5

An interesting take on time travel: there's a hidden little café in Tokyo that has one single seat that allows you to travel through time. There are many rules, but one of the most important is that you must return to the present before the coffee before you gets cold. ☕ Oh, and another rule is that no matter what you do in the past, the present won't change.

#pop22 A different book by an author you read in 2021

Ropy time travel mechanics?

Twee, didactic life lessons?

More of the same?

I don't care. These stories are life affirming, gorgeous and make me cry in public.

I can practically smell the coffee; it's like I'm sitting there in the sepia-toned room sipping bitter-tasting syphon coffee and thinking about life, the universe and death.

Oof. Never a good sign when I have to push myself to continue. I guess this must do something for other people that it didn't do for me. Much like Kazuo Ishigiro's 'Klara and the Sun', I didn't feel invested and moved so much as emotionally manipulated, unsuccessfully.
Guilting someone via opinion of dead family members (which shows up TWICE) to modify behaviour during greiving process is reprehensible. Lack of communication: my least fave trope.
