Full Dark, No Stars
Full Dark, No Stars | Stephen King
The acclaimed #1 New York Times and undisputed King of Horror Stephen King delivers five unforgettable short works, two of which will soon be adapted for film, and which Booklist called raw looks at the limits of greed, revenge, and self-deception. Like Different Seasons and Four Past Midnight, which generated such enduring hit films as The Shawshank Redemption and Stand by Me, Full Dark, No Stars proves Stephen King a master of the long story form.I believe there is another man inside every man, a stranger writes Wilfred Leland James in the early pages of the riveting confession that makes up 1922, the first in this pitch-black quartet of mesmerizing tales from Stephen King. For James, that stranger is awakened when his wife Arlette proposes selling off the family homestead and moving to Omaha, setting in motion a gruesome train of murder and madness. In Big Driver, soon to be a major Lifetime movie starring Maria Bello, a cozy-mystery writer named Tess encounters the stranger is along a back road in Massachusetts when she takes a shortcut home after a book club engagement. Violated and left for dead, Tess plots a revenge that will bring her face to face with another stranger: the one inside herself. Fair Extension, the shortest of these tales, is perhaps the nastiest and certainly the funniest. Making a deal with the devil not only saves Harry Streeter from a fatal cancer but provides rich recompense for a lifetime of resentment. In the last of the tales, soon to be a major motion picture, Darcy Andersons husband of more than twenty years is away on one of his business trips and his unsuspecting wife looks for batteries in the garage. Her toe knocks up against a box under a worktable and she discovers the stranger inside her husband. Its a horrifying discovery, rendered with bristling intensity, and it definitively ends A Good Marriage.

Some great short stories by #StevenKing to include 1922. Definitely worth a read, and my first Steven King book. I‘ve got #IT on tap after I finish the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Oh boy this was Dark - I'm not sure what I was expecting but nothing quite so bleak. However, I did really enjoy it and A Good Marriage was my favourite story. The only negative point I have is that I just don't love the reading experience of short story collections. That's not the books fault though just a preference of mine.

RadicalReader @danibolahood I definitely love all the movie adaptions they transform his terrific beloved books into thy are always so wonderfully well done and his cameos are the cherry on top 10mo
danibolahood @RadicalReader I think there are quite a few adaptations from this book made. I'll have to try and track them down 🙂 10mo

Let the Halloween reading commence!👻🎃🦇📖

Reggie The 2nd story about the friends and the gypsy on the highway gets to me. All four tales are winners but that second one..... 13mo
danibolahood @Reggie I'm just diving into the second one now. I can't imagine what I'm getting into if it's worse then the first! I found that first one so bleak with no break in how horrifying the whole situation was. 13mo
Reggie Yeah, even though he helped kill his mother, I just felt so bad for the son and his girlfriend in that first story. They were just kids. 13mo

danibolahood @Reggie I think this edition has the stories in a different order. Big Driver was the second one in my version. I liked it but man I need a break lol these are DARK 13mo
Reggie The one about the author right? Yeah, lol, the title is fitting, right? No stars, no light, no hope. 13mo
danibolahood @Reggie Yes that's the one and as someone who loves road trips by herself it was very unsettling. You're right the title is probably one of the most perfect titles I've come across. 13mo

Really enjoyed 3/4 of the stories in this one (Big Driver was just ok). I like how they force you to think and imagine what you, as an ordinary person, would do in these extraordinary situations. Highly recommended to anyone who enjoys the occasional dark piece of fiction #stephenking #fulldarknostars

bookishbitch Big Driver was made into a movie that I thought was well done. 1y
KatieanneF @bookishbitch Interesting! I may have to check it out. I always like seeing movie adaptations. I just didn‘t love that one- I feel like a bad feminist for thinking so, but I didn‘t find her empowering and I thought adding in the other woman‘s story felt like padding for a basic rape/revenge plot. The other stories just caught my attention in a different way 1y
bookishbitch Hmm I never considered it an empowering women's story. For me it was more of a murder mystery and revenge story. Though it began as a survival story. 1y

Short story collection. Loved all stories including the slow going 1922. Psst skip the movie... Same as the story equally boring... Anyhoo even the bonus story Under the Weather was cool. All were very well written and interesting.

I give this book 4 stars.

I listened to the first novella in this collection “1922” but didn‘t really care to continue. I was intrigued by the basic plot line and found elements of it unsettling (a farmer covers up the murder of his wife) but I just didn‘t like how it was told. The narrative conceit is a letter, so too many parts were summarized for my tastes.

I stumbled on an article discussing a Netflix adaptation of "1922" and I was intrigued. Its been ages since I've read this collection, so obviously I immediately needed to re-read it.

The scariest scene from a book that comes to memory is from the story 1922, in Full Dark, No Stars. All I will say is: big, nasty, flesh eating rats. It's not okay. The only thing that could be worse would be big, nasty, flesh eating frogs. I hate frogs. Ugh, I just made myself nauseous talking about rats and frogs. Well, that took an odd turn. UH BYEEEEE. #stephenking17 #scariesbookmoment

The first '1922' is one of my best favourites of King's short stories, well worth a film as I'd love to see; the most stubbornly grotesque handing of covering up a farmland murder. Killer themes in these tales were great and darkly memorable; four wild thrillers. 🔪

For #booktober day 17, virtually my only collections of #shortstories. The King stories are a bit lengthy to be deemed "short," but the horrific tales definitely qualify this one as a #quickread (that won't quickly leave you). The Poe collection was given to me at HS graduation by my English teacher, who was something of a goddess in my eyes.
