The Lost Man
The Lost Man | Jane Harper
The gripping new novel from the author of the Sunday Times top ten bestsellers, The Dry and Force of Nature. He had started to remove his clothes as logic had deserted him and his skin was cracked. Whatever had been going through Cameron's mind when he was alive, he didn't look peaceful in death. Two brothers meet at the remote fence line separating their cattle farms under the relenting sun of the remote outback. In an isolated part of Western Australia, they are each other's nearest neighbour, their homes three hours' drive apart. They are at the stockman's grave, a landmark so old that no one can remember who is buried there. But today, the scant shadow it casts was the last hope for their middle brother, Cameron, who lies dead at their feet. Something had been on Cam's mind. Did he choose to walk to his death? Because if he didn't, the isolation of the outback leaves few suspects... The Lost Man is the highly anticipated new book from the bestselling and award-winning Jane Harper, author of The Dry and Force of Nature.

This one was a slow burn for me. I wasn't sure how I felt about it at first, Then I liked it but wished it would move a little faster, but by the end my patience was rewarded and I was satisfied!

Most pleasant evening spent finishing this one. I love Jane Harper. Her descriptions of the outback were so vivid. It may not have been full of twists and turns but she kept me hooked right to the end. I may have guessed the ending a wee bit early but not too early to ruin it.

If you watched the show Bloodline on Netflix this book is like that...but with Aussies.
I was excited to read my first Jane Harper, but I found it a bit of a struggle when it came to the regional references and vernacular. Interesting & fully developed characters but the story was a bit slow moving for my taste. Unpopular opinion, I know.

Atmospheric, slow suspense, mental health issues and fraught interpersonal relationships: this #audiobook set in the outback 1,500 miles west of Brisbane hit all the right notes for me. I‘ve enjoyed Harper‘s earlier Aaron Falk mysteries, yet this one was even better because it‘s a standalone without a detective at the centre of it. Audio has a bonus interview track with both the author & narrator Stephen Shanahan. #Australian

Harper's books are great as #audiobooks 💘 she is so talented at conjuring a sense of place and making you feel the climate and weather shifts. This was another intriguing murder mystery, minus Falk, with a distinctive Australian setting. Bonus points for an interview with both the author and the voice actor at the end 👍 #mommyreads #crime #mystery #Australia

This is a slow burn of a novel- a family drama with some suspense, centered around the death (murder? suicide?) of Cam.
I still love Harper's first novel, The Dry, best of all her works. But I definitely recommend this- it's atmospheric, intriguing, and well written. I will absolutely pick up her next book!

It‘s really smoky outside and the air quality index in Edmonton is currently 4 and forecast to reach 7 later today—that‘s high risk—because of wild fires in Alberta. Today‘s fire danger map (above) shows that we are in the extreme (red) zone. Jane Harper is so good; I enjoyed The Dry, loved Force of Nature and this was unputdownable; I read it in 24 hours. She writes such gripping page turners with a real sense of place. Despite typical wet/cold UK Bank Holiday weather, I could have been in the relentless heat of the Australian outback, her writing is so good. She got me with this one too; I genuinely didn‘t see the twist that was coming.

Love this author, missed Aaron Falk, but I still enjoyed it. She is so good at making the environment a character in the book, and I was completely here for it. The story was sufficiently twisty, a little over the top at times, and the tiniest bit too long, but otherwise great!

What could be better than a mystery that takes place in the Australian outback? Jane Harper is quickly rising to the very top of my favorite mystery authors and I think this is her best yet. The atmospheric way that she sets the story of the death of one of three brothers and the search to find his killer convinced me that I was in the desert alongside the characters. I am definitely a Jane Harper fan.

Started this audio yesterday for my #labsoundtrack and still listening today. Continuing my streak of lovely wonderful accents with Australian now. Now that I‘ve done so, I wanted to post about a book I read toward the end of January that ended up being my first but 5 ⭐️ read of 2019.

Set in the Australian Outback, The Lost Man is an atmospheric, character-driven murder mystery with a heavy focus on family/relationships. I loved every second of it and had the hardest time putting it down!

I was a little disappointed that her third book didn't continue the Aaron Falk series- and I have high hopes there will be many more of those!- so I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this. Are literary mysteries a thing? If so, I think that's what this is. I enjoyed getting to know every member of this family and learning their secrets. As is usual in her books the real main character was the landscape; very strong sense of place.

Harper is easily becoming the master of the slow-burn crime novel. The Lost Man has all the hallmarks of her other work- the extreme landscape is foregrounded, and we are humbled by its power over men, she puts small, isolated communities and families under the microscope. Her characters are real, and believably flawed. I didn‘t see the twist coming, and it added to the thematic weight of the novel, as an examination of misogyny and violence.

The story started out slow, but the pace soon picks up and I was totally immersed. The Lost Man examines the relationships among the characters, the dark secrets and resentments that harboured over the years. Great, vivid descriptions of the harsh Queensland outback, nicely structured mystery with themes of loneliness, survival, and guilt woven in, and totally believable characters make this a splendid read. I like this better than her 2nd novel.

Jane Harper really has a way with settings. They become as much a part of the story as the characters. This one is set in the outback of Australia, focusing on a family-very character driven. She makes you care so much about them. I didn‘t feel like this one was exactly a thriller-maybe a mystery-but still very engaging. For me it wasn‘t quite as good as the Aaron Falk series but still highly recommend.

5 ☆ Another captivating novel, her best yet! I loved Harper‘s very descriptive lay of the land, and the many references to the hardships families face living there, all putting a vivid picture in my mind of Queensback. The characters are well fleshed out, with clues to the mystery written by leaving small bread crumbs throughout the story, very clever. Highly recommend!

CoverToCoverGirl When recommending this author I always say that the setting, Australia, is almost the main character of the book. It feels like a living and breathing entity because Harper just brings it to life. She writes beautifully, can‘t wait to read this one. (edited) 3mo
