Text, Don't Call: An Illustrated Guide to the Introverted Life | Aaron Caycedo-Kimura
36 posts | 19 read | 42 to read
An illustrated guide to the challenges and pleasures of the introverted life Introversion is "in." But there are still many misconceptions about introverts in the world. They're shy. Anti-social. They don't want to have close relationships. They're all cat people. They don't like big parties (okay, that last one might be true). INFJoe, the cartoon persona of artist and introvert Aaron Caycedo-Kimura, is here to set the record straight. Filled with charming comic book style illustrations, this book provides invaluable insights into the introverted life with plenty of humor and wit. Full of moments that will make introverts say, "That's so me!" as well as helpful tips on surviving at parties and in the workplace, Text, Don't Call is the perfect gift for your quiet friends, or the extroverted ones who could use some help to better understand the introverts in their lives.

I definitely didn‘t need a lesson on what it‘s like to be an introvert (I‘m pretty much a subject-matter expert). But I do wish I could casually pass this along to everyone I know so that someone would understand me.

Yesterday I listened to someone I‘ve worked closely with for 8 years have an hour long conversation with someone who‘s been around for about 8 weeks. That I‘ve never had that kind of convo with them hurts more than I can explain.

Texreader I‘m so so sorry. I‘m a bit of an extrovert but I‘ve certainly have had this happen. And it does hurt. That hurt is real. 5mo
AlaMich I‘m a fellow introvert and I know exactly how you feel. Sometimes I think I missed a few classes where they explained how to be social. 5mo

Much of this book hit home with me, although most who know me would say I'm more of an ambivert (can flex as an extrovert) than an introvert. This is my favorite cartoon from the book. Except for the tablet - can't deal with one more device - this is my happy place, too! 📓 💙 💻

282Mikado My happy place has all this plus two monitors attached to the laptop, one on either side (I work from home). Also, no mocha - dark coffee, black; and I prefer e-mail over texting - Hate phones. If interested there is a good personality test online at 16personalities.com. I scored 91% introvert (INTJ-T). (edited) 2y
Sparklemn @282mikado I'll have to check that out. Thanks! 2y

Really, really struggling at work atm. You might think that, in a hospital, during a global pandemic, people would start making a tiny effort to respect your personal space, but nah. A porter fully barged into the back of me when I was going in this morning (through the one entrance all staff now have to use, in a big hospital). But hey, he was wearing a mask!

arlenefinnigan My line manager apparently thinks it's hilarious that the cleaner makes me so uncomfortable. "oh I did laugh when you told him he was supposed to be 2 metres away!" "he was crawling under my desk. While I was sitting at it." "hahahaha! Some people would like that!" Seriously? This is OK? Am I in a Carry On Film? 4y
arlenefinnigan Meanwhile, while over half the office have been sent to work from home, the ones that are left are making a special effort to pick up the slack, chatter wise. It's all day, every day. I don't know how they don't give themselves headaches. They sure give me one. 4y
arlenefinnigan Unfortunately my husband is also an extrovert, so when I try to talk to him about how unhappy I am and how much I'm struggling, he rolls his eyes and makes it clear I'm making a fuss over nothing. Which makes it all the more unfair that he gets to work from home and I have to go into a office with shrieking banshees all day. 4y

arlenefinnigan Sorry for the rant. But I know a lot of Littens understand better than most. The introvert struggle is real. 4y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I totally understand... the struggle is real and it doesn‘t look like it‘s going away any time soon unfortunately. I‘m a nurse and I work in our transfer center and our hospital is on hospital diversion! 4y
arlenefinnigan @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks oof. That can't be fun. Good luck. 4y
Karkar Shrieking banshees 🤣🤣🤣🤣. But seriously I hate that some people just do not get the if I can feel you body heat you are wayyyyyy to close to me. 4y
Bookwomble I usually work at a different community clinic each day, but as they're all closed and I can work by phone during lockdown, I'm now based in one place, pretty much on my own. I feel for you, Arlene 💗 4y
Megabooks I‘m so sorry. Sending support. 💕💕 4y
arlenefinnigan @Karkar also, it's not necessary to verbalise every thought that comes into your head. You really don't need to give me warning that you're going to the toilet or putting the kettle on. 4y
arlenefinnigan @Bookwomble ah, that sounds nice. Ta. 4y
arlenefinnigan @Megabooks thank you x 4y
LeeRHarry You would think 🤷🏼‍♀️ happens to me too in the hospital where I work - no idea 🤦🏻‍♀️ totally get where you are coming from 💕 4y
arlenefinnigan "oh are you trying to read your book on your lunch break cool I'm gonna stand next to desk babbling then shriek hilariously about how you can't hear what I'm saying because I've got a mask on hahahahahaha don't worry I'm just chunnering to myself". Fab. And you can't do that at your own desk? 4y
MicheleinPhilly Ugh! I‘m sorry you have to deal with that under “normal” circumstances. You certainly don‘t need any additional stress when we‘re all at the breaking point. Mindless chatter just to fill dead air is one of my pet peeves. 4y
arlenefinnigan @MicheleinPhilly it's like a woodpecker at your skull isn't it x 4y
MicheleinPhilly I‘m thankfully remote 100% but I have a colleague that will drone on about the most pointless stuff for 20 minutes during every meeting. She never SHUTS UP! When we‘ve been doing the Zoom calls I spend the entire thing staring at my own face so I don‘t “accidentally” roll my eyes. 4y
arlenefinnigan @MicheleinPhilly 😂 Zoom meetings sound like a nightmare...... 4y
arlenefinnigan They're getting me a work laptop so that I can work from home, and it's been suggested that if I need to come into to office to work on casenotes I should come in of an evening, after people have gone home. Happy days 😃 4y
MicheleinPhilly 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼Excellent news! Zoom meetings are the WORST. I‘m always like “I don‘t need to see people. I have a wife and a dog. I‘m good.” 4y
arlenefinnigan @MicheleinPhilly can you unleash the dog on Zoom if people are being too yappy? 😉 4y
MicheleinPhilly Sadly Pickles loves being on camera so that just inspires them to gush. I have however surreptitiously phoned myself so they can hear the phone ring and then I say, “Sorry, I have to take that.” 😈 4y
arlenefinnigan @MicheleinPhilly ooh pro tip 👌 4y
CarolynM Hope the working at home thing works out for you🙂 4y
CBee @arlenefinnigan @MicheleinPhilly did y‘all see the story about the gal who accidentally made herself a potato during a Zoom meeting? It was some setting on her computer or phone and she couldn‘t figure out how to change it 😂😂 So she was a potato. At a work meeting 😁😂 4y
arlenefinnigan @CBee 🤣 when Aisling Bea was on The Last Leg a few weeks ago, she put in the potato filter, then when she turned it off she was wearing a potato suit 🤣 4y
CBee @arlenefinnigan oh my that‘s hilarious, I must investigate this 😂 4y
CBee @arlenefinnigan I had never heard of her before now and looked her up - she is fantastic 😂😂 4y

The main thing I've learned from the last few days is that extroverts would honestly rather die and/or kill you than respect your personal space.

julesG I knew being an introvert has its advantages. We'll be able to survive the 2020 toilet paper crisis. 4y
squirrelbrain I went to the local shop today to do some shopping for my Mum. The woman in the queue behind me got too close, and every time I moved away, she moved closer still. 😱 4y
TrishB @squirrelbrain that happened to me yesterday!! 4y
See All 7 Comments
squirrelbrain The thing is @TrishB she looked to be over 70 as well. I didn‘t know whether to be angry that she was risking her health by edging ever closer, or maybe sorry that she wanted some company....😳 4y
TrishB It‘s all bonkers isn‘t it ☹️ 4y
CarolynM @TrishB Too true! (edited) 4y
arlenefinnigan Someone has just leaned right over my desk (seriously she was literally half-lying on it) holding the casenotes of a COVID-19 patient. Extroverts would genuinely, seriously rather kill you than respect your personal space. 4y

A lot of this illustrated guide to introverts was spot on for me. Sometimes when our culture seems to value extrovert qualities more, it‘s comforting to see introvert qualities normalized. It ended up being a so-so because I was expecting a little more humor. Quick read. I‘m also an INFJ like the author (occasionally an INFP).

#NDNov

hermyknee I‘m an INFP! 4y

quietlycuriouskate Ugh! I'm so sorry you had to suffer that in the name of someone else's idea of fun. 😫 5y
arlenefinnigan @kathedron ta 😊 I really hate how you're judged at work on how enthusiastically you play along with crap like this and not on your actual work. 5y
marleed I hated those deliberately bonding moment meetings so much that I volunteered for a 2-week long intense course on how to conduct such meetings hoping that if I truly understood it I would be a better participant. Well that was 2 weeks I‘ll never get back. (edited) 5y
arlenefinnigan @marleed 😂 did you at least get some good answers to 'icebreaker' questions? 5y
marleed @arlenefinnigan I did leave the course with my certificate and a better understanding of the attempt to build a cohesive workplace. The alternative is a company that doesn‘t give a damn about about employee relations. And actually the training taught me to be a better person personally since the whole 2 weeks was about compassion first. 5y
arlenefinnigan @marleed 2 weeks though.... 5y
marleed @arlenefinnigan I was emotionally rough training. 5y

I LOVED this. It absolutely talked my language. It's great to have someone say that being quite, needing alone time, needing time to think before speaking etc. aren't character flaws. "Be good to yourself, be true to yourself" is a great motto to live your life by.

MicheleinPhilly This is one of the many reasons I love working from home! Every time a colleague emails at 9:00 at night from the office I think, you could have been done at 5 if you chatted less. 5y

Wow. I learned some things about myself from this Illustrated Guide to the Introverted Life. I never recognized why I‘m the “helper” at other people‘s parties (when I even make it) or why I can‘t come home from an event with no time to spare and go straight to bed. Must. Have. Time. To. Unwind.

JHSiess I test as an Introvert on the Myers-Briggs personality inventory which was an eye-opener. No one who meets me would think, "Oh, she's introverted." Unless they are familiar with Myers-Briggs which analyzes where one's strength originates: from within (introvert) or from others (extrovert). I am a full-fledged M-B introvert. When I'm done, I'm soooooo done & need to recharge. Alone. Hate crowds more & more as I age. So . . . ?‍♀️ 6y
