Great Expectations
Great Expectations | Charles Dickens
One of the finest novels by iconic British author Charles Dickens, this Victorian tale follows the good-natured orphan Pip as he makes his way through life. As a boy, Pip crosses paths with a convict named Magwitch, a man who will heavily influence Pip’s adulthood. Meanwhile, the earnest young man falls for the beautiful Estella, the adoptive daughter of the affluent and eccentric Miss Havisham. Widely considered to be Dickens's last great book, the story is steeped in romance and features the writer's familiar themes of crime, punishment, and societal struggle.

Book #30: Great Expectations was one of Dickens' last novels, and by far one of his best. The novel follows Pip, a street orphan, as he is saved by a convict and eventually grows up to find love. While reading through the story it can be a bit slow at times but overall the story is well written and easy to follow. This book, along with most...

“[I]s or is not, that‘s the way things are. The colour of the day. The way it felt to be a child. The saltwater on your sunburnt legs. Sometimes the water is yellow, sometimes it‘s red. But what colour it may be in memory, depends on the day. I‘m not going to tell you the story the way it happened. I‘m going to tell it the way I remember it.”

Megabooks Really interesting choice of quote! I like it. I had to think about it. 👍🏻🖖🏻 1mo
LiterRohde I had to look up the episode because clues wasn‘t doing it for me. So I went with memory and how it‘s not as permanent as we think. There‘s reality and then there‘s memory. (edited) 1mo
LiterRohde The way I understand the episode (I‘m afraid I‘ve never seen it 😱) is that Data was the one who understood the full reality of the situation and in the end, told the story the way he wanted the rest of the crew to remember it, not the way it really happened. 1mo
Megabooks @LiterRohde Well, Picard ordered Data to keep the encounter with the aliens secret, but there were too many clues that showed that instead of passing quickly through a wormhole, they had a longer encounter. So they had to redo the mind/time erase. In short. 😉 1mo
LiterRohde @Megabooks Ok. So not the way he WANTED to tell it, but the way he was ORDERED to tell he. He knew the reality of the wormhole and isolationist civilization and the rest of the crew did not. They lived with a memory or story that was not reality. Anyway, I‘m overthinking things and this episode sounds quite trippy. And I need to do some work instead of trying to make sure my quote fits. It‘s all that pressure from that “words of wisdom” stuff. 🤣 1mo

My favourite novel, which I have read many times. It has a bit of everything: coming of age, mystery, intrigue, deception, humour, tragedy, unrequited love, romance, crime... A true masterpiece of 19th-century writing.

When I read this in school I just didn‘t get it. I struggled to understand this -and I tried hard. Maybe after 30+ years I have a better understanding of Dicksonian England. I feel like some books that were required reading were lost on me maybe I wasn‘t ready
(though I think the books I read in this one year are the least understood and were the hardest to read so I‘m going with crappy English teacher)

I have never seen an adaptation or even heard the story of Great Expectations before, so I went in blind. I loved the descriptive language and humor that is typical of Dickens, and I really enjoyed the gothic touches. The main characters aren‘t very likable, but that didn‘t stop me from rooting for Pip to get it together, enjoying Miss Havisham and her drama, and appreciating Abel.

Kaye @sprainedbrain Very sorry for any confusion. I happen to like Dickens and think he‘s a talented writer. George despises him , so every time anyone posts about him, George has to start complaining about it. Then he tags me so I‘ll SEE his complaint. I‘ve repeatedly told him he has the right to dislike any author, but everyone else has the right to like them. I‘m not blocking anyone, NOR do I have the power to get anyone blocked , nor any reason to 5mo

sprainedbrain @hilded I mainly use my phone, but I also have the serial app on my iPad for when I need a bigger screen. I paid for upgrade that allows me to read more than one selection per day, and if I‘m going to read several chapters I will usually use my iPad. I had to read this for A Level English and I just loved this book. We were shown the 1946 film with John Mills and Alec Guinness to compare the description in the novel with the film maker's interpretation (hence the pictures) and I have this habit with every film adaptation I watch now when I've read the book.

I should know better than to give up on Dickens. About 2/3rds of the way through this book, I was ready to bail. It just didn‘t capture my attention. Then all of a sudden, everything picked up and all the threads started to be tied together. I couldn‘t put it down at that point. I would not say this is my favorite Dickens, but it ended with a solid 4. As always, there are some memorable characters: Pip, Miss Havisham, Mr. Jaggers, Magwitch.

#NoFemmeber
One thing that sets Estella apart from the typical #IcePrincess is how Dickens explains her behavior. Having an elderly woman use you as a vehicle for vengeance may not be a realistic situation, but it nicely dramatizes how adult actions can shape who children will become. Much has been written on Azealia Banks' behavior (some of it rightly condemned), but her music speaks for itself: her first LP is one of my favorite rap albums.

I hate to say that about a well-liked classic but I thought this book was horrible. The main character Pip is an ungrateful, self-centred and hopelessly naive little prick. I know he‘s supposed to develop throughout the novel and he sort of does but the way it was done was not at all believable to me. He‘s in love with a girl who is so mean and cold-hearted that I never got why he liked her as her only positive feature is her beauty. ⬇️

LaLecture There‘s not much happening throughout the book and for me as a non-native speaker the style of writing was hard to understand sometimes, even though I‘m used to reading in English. In the ending Dickens tries to put sort of a crime story into the book with makes it a bit more exciting but then destroys it again when he rushes the last chapters extremely. There were only very few minor characters whom I liked and who made the book bearable. 8mo

This is my first Dickens and I‘m not sure 🤔 how I feel about it yet. I really enjoyed the beginning, but somewhere in the middle it dragged.
