The Ruin | Dervla McTiernan
Cormac Reilly is about to reopen the case that took him twenty years to forget ... The stunning debut novel from your new favourite crime writer. 'TheRuin is a terrific debut and a rare gem:a compelling crime thriller that delivers depth as well as twists, with everypage clearly written from the heart' Sara Foster, author of The Hidden Hours Responding to a call that took him to a decrepit country house, young Garda Cormac Reilly found two silent, neglected children - fifteen-year-old Maude and five-year-old Jack. Their mother lay dead upstairs. Since then Cormac's had twenty high-flying years working as a detective in Dublin, and he's come back to Galway for reasons of his own. As he struggles to navigate the politics of a new police station, Maude and Jack return to haunt him. What ties a recent suicide to that death from so long ago? And who among his new colleagues can Cormac really trust? This unsettling crime debut draws us deep into the dark heart of Irelandand asks who will protect you when the authorities can't - or won't. Perfectfor fans of Tana French and Jane Harper.

Jumping into #aussieapril with this book, hosted by SixMinsforMe and AllDBooks on YouTube. I was suspicious that it may not be called an Australian book, but Kate at The Novel Nomad on BookTube calls it Australian, so who am I to argue? Really excited to try to read some new -to-me authors from that part of the world. Any Australian authors or books that I simply must read? Anyone else joining in?

umbrellagirl I‘m looking for novels set in Australia to bring when I visit in July. So far I‘ve got 4mo
HardcoverHearts @umbrellagirl I got a lot of great suggestions on my IG account- including Jane Harper (The Dry), Tim Winton, Claire Coleman, and specifically 2 recs for Boy Swallows Universe. Where are you going in Australia? 4mo
Centique Oh wow I must recommend Peter Carey too and an indigenous author‘s memoir for you which is excellent 4mo

HardcoverHearts @Centique - Fantastic! I will check those out. Keep any ideas coming. Only 15 days left! 4mo
CarolynM @Centique you are flattering me again. I've just sent you some books, hope you will like them. There are so many Australian authors I could recommend but I will stick to a few favourites Joan London (especially The Golden Age and Gilgamesh), Helen Garner, Frank Moorhouse, Peter Goldsworthy, Georgia Blain's Between a Wolf and a Dog, Jessica Anderson (especially Tirra Lirra by the River), Gillian Mears, Steven Carroll, Fiona Capp, Melissa Lucashenko (edited) 4mo
CarolynM All the above are at the more literary end. If you like crime try Peter Temple, Garry Disher, Shane Maloney (a particular favourite of mine), Leigh Redhead, Marele Day, Sulari Gentill. 4mo
Centique @CarolynM you sent me some books? Oh gosh I owe you some books! I‘ve been thinking what I should send you 💕 I‘m taking note of all these great Aussie reccs too! 4mo

Well I ploughed through this. A detective returns to the west of Ireland after years in Dublin and finds himself involved in an investigation of a suicide which touches on a twenty year old case of drug overdose and child abuse, the case that started his career in the Garda. A well plotted detective tale with multiple threads to be chased down, internal politics and corruption within the police force and a cast of interesting characters.

Rabble book shop buy @MrsMalaprop and @Rissreads . Can‘t wait to read it. Heard her on the radio. Local woman I think I remember. Will get recent one if I enjoy this one. Everyone who has read it seems to love it.

Rissreads We read it for bookclub. I enjoyed it. One of the ladies from bookclub worked with her whilst she was writing it and is mentioned in the back. Apparently the day she heard she was going to be published was the same day she found out she had a brain tumour or cancer. But she is doing good now. It‘s great to support local authors! She has movie deals now too! 😊 (edited) 4mo

Irish noir does not disappoint! Detective Cormac Reilly transfers from Dublin to Galway, and he‘s assigned a cold case from 20 years ago; it also happens to be the first case he worked on as a Garda. He never forgot it, and it is tied to the death of a man who was a child victim in the case. Starts off slowly but turns into fast, compelling read. Corruption all around; women doing what they must; religious coverups. Can‘t wait for the 2nd volume.

The plot lines are solid. I was taken along to follow a smart mystery set in a grey and dark Ireland. Not violent physically but the emotional and psychological violence is real and sometimes very much so. Trigger warnings in effect.

After a slow start, this debut novel turned into a great crime thriller. Written by an Irish lawyer now living in Perth WA,it‘s about the failures of both the welfare & police in Ireland when children are abused by family. Cormac Reilly is assigned back to a cold case he first investigated 20yrs ago after one of the children he rescued is found dead. One of the better procedural/mysteries I've read, full stop. Comparisons to Tana French might be a tiny bit premature, but not far off. Among the (too) many books I'm reading right now, is The Ruin. It's an Irish thriller/mystery that starts 20 yrs ago with a slapdash resolution to a disturbing situation, then returns to present with an unlikely crime that doesn't appear to be related except for the players involved. I'm really enjoying the read & the fast pace... Alas I didn't make enough time to finish it before book group tonight, but hopefully I will in the next few nights...

This is a fabulous start to a series! It's not quite worthy of the Tana French comparisons it gets, but the complex mysteries were super satisfying. I'd say that it's a perfect readalike for The Dry by Jane Harper.

I picked this book up at my local library - where I spied it on the returns shelf - because I‘d heard a bit about it: debut Irish author who recently emigrated to Western Australia (where I live).
I don‘t do a lot of crime fiction these days and I found this an enjoyable #palatecleanser. It‘s reasonably well-written and I was keen to find out #whodoneit.

Still enjoying this debut crime fiction. But was it really necessary to choose two such similar character names? It‘s hard enough for me to keep track of characters these days 🤷‍♀️😅.

margreads I'm listening to this at the moment. Don't think i have met Maura yet. 11mo
margreads I do find myself wondering about the irish/Australian accent the narrator does for Maude 11mo
MrsMalaprop @margreads Maura is a very minor character. I‘m almost finished the book. How ‘bout you? 11mo

Ok so being sick with a throat infection sucks 😟. Being forced to finish my #currentread whilst eating leftover chicken noodle soup though? That‘s quite ok 👏📖🍵
Every cloud, silver lining 😊.

Loving this book & this view today. #currentlyreading

Not sure that this qualifies as #ozfiction given the author is a very new Australian 🤔.

She does in fact live here in Perth though, so what the heck, we‘ll claim her 👏😂👍🇦🇺.

CarolynM Definitely claim her, it's the Australian way😂 11mo

I really enjoyed this audiobook. I definitely didn‘t figure out the whodunit. I loved that it was an Irish narrator... made it wonderful to listen to 🤗 🌟🌟🌟🌟

Book 2 of vacation reading finished! I totally got a Tana French vibe from this #mystery, of course I liked it! I stayed up late last night to finish it. And I didn't totally solve this one before the end, so that makes me happy.
I definitely want to read the next in the series when it comes out!
