The Scholar | Dervla McTiernan
From the author of the critically acclaimed bestseller The Ruin comes a compulsive new crime thriller featuring DS Cormac Reilly. Being brilliant has never been this dangerous ... When Dr Emma Sweeney stumbles across the victim of a hit and run outside Galway University late one evening, she calls her partner, Detective Cormac Reilly, bringing him first to the scene of a murder that would otherwise never have been assigned to him. A security card in the dead woman's pocket identifies her as Carline Darcy, a gifted student and heir apparent to Irish pharmaceutical giant Darcy Therapeutics. The multi-billion-dollar company, founded by her grandfather, has a finger in every pie, from sponsoring university research facilities to funding political parties to philanthropy - it has funded Emma's own ground-breaking research. The enquiry into Carline's death promises to be high profile and high pressure. As Cormac investigates, evidence mounts that the death is linked to a Darcy laboratory and, increasingly, to Emma herself. Cormac is sure she couldn't be involved, but as his running of the case comes under scrutiny from the department and his colleagues, he is forced to question his own objectivity. Could his loyalty to Emma have led him to overlook evidence? Has it made him a liability?

Book 2 of Cormac Reilly series
Cormac's girlfriend Emma calls in a panic, she's found a dead body outside her laboratory. It may be the granddaughter of the pharmaceutical giant who who owns the lab. Cormac is put in charge of the case, and works to keep Emma from becoming involved. Lots of twists as the case moves forward, especially trying to find out who the girl is and why she's trying to get in the lab. ⬇️

Crazeedi Of course Murphy, Cormac's boss is trying to set him up to fail. I definitely recommend this series. #Serieslove2024 @Andrew65 @TheSpineView #ReadAway2024 @DieAReader @GHABI4ROSES #Sharreadathon @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks 3mo

This was the second book in the series 📖 There was a pretty solid plot twist! When a girl is found dead on campus all fingers point to a top secret university project.. but what happens when the deceased didn‘t even attend the university in question? Why was she there?

This was my first book by this author and I really enjoyed it. This is the second of a series but I was able to jump into it ok. A little of the first book is spoiled but not too much. I did not figure out the case at all. I think the main detective is an interesting character so I‘m looking forward to reading more of the series.

Loving this series on audio--I have The Good Turn next in line!

Not quite as good as the first one (some of the characters' decisions really annoyed me) but overal a strong listen with an engaging storyline. Hoping to keep the ball rolling with the third installment!

Solid! I haven‘t read the first of this series but I enjoyed this one. Well paced and an interesting mystery at the center. Strong ending as well. I liked the multiple perspectives.

Not much more to say, really. If you like this sort of mystery thriller you will probably enjoy it!

A woman is run down in Galway in a clear vehicular murder, complicated by the lead detective‘s girlfriend finding the body. Also, the dead woman was carrying someone else‘s ID. This is a good mystery/police procedural that feels realistic. I liked her first book, too, and look forward to reading more from McTiernan.

While the rest of the family is sleeping I finished this audiobook and my second book for #superseptember 🤗 This book was just as good as the first in the series. Cormac Reilly is a very intuitive detective and I really love how he handles everyone who underestimates him. He proves them wrong every time! 🌟🌟🌟🌟

This was a good ride, though it stuck a little with me how mindlessly juvenile things were at times. Yes, more than likely a fair-on depiction of a cop transferring to a new precinct when that precinct is questionable, but by the third time I want to box one the garda‘s ears for being as dumb as a bag of rocks just for the sake of being contrary, it got a little old.

This is another crime thriller that kept me turning pages and thinking till the end. It delves into corporate corruption and ethics. I really like Dervla McTiernans writing, her well drawn characters and atmospheric settings. Her first novel The Ruin and this are both well worth reading ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Another great, fast-paced police procedural. I enjoy that Cormac Reilly is strong, but flawed. Also, I hate Moira with every fiber of my being 🤣
The third book, for some reason, is not available in the US- even on Kindle. I assume the reason is COVID related. I hope I can read it soon!

A break from medieval history with a crime novel set in Ireland in 2014. I loved Dervla McTiernan‘s first novel The Ruin and this one is a page turner too so far. It has the same likeable police investigator Cormac Reilly in both books.

Hmmm, this was ok. It‘s the second in a series by an Irish-born, Perth-residing author. I read the first The Ruin a while ago & quite liked it.

I received The Scholar in my book club Secret Santa. I really think I might be “over” crime fiction, because it seems everyone else loved this one. Towards the end I struggled to remain engaged.
🤷‍♀️ #unpopularopinion

Finished up the Scholar today during afternoon tea at Chateau Lake Louise. I think I enjoyed The Ruin more but it‘s close... I‘ll definitely be reading the next in the series when it comes out. I enjoyed getting to know Carrie and Emma a bit more but found things a little too easy to piece together - I was yelling about one of the twists almost immediately!

I read this for the Girly Book Club, and I had read the first in this series. I liked this read better than the first.
This one was very unpredictable. Cormac's girlfriend happens upon a dead co-ed, and becomes the number one suspect. Things are not what they seem.
I enjoyed digging deeper into Cormac's character, who is flawed in many ways, yet easy to like. Looking forward to reading more.

I enjoyed this just as much as the first book in the series. It was nice to get more from the POV of Carrie. The personal connection of the mystery to Cormac and Emma definitely raised the tension. Similar to the first book, the discovery of different clues is paced well, and there are enough little twists that kept me guessing killer until very close to when it was revealed. The audiobook narrator is fantastic.

#ScaryScavengerHunt #ThatsOver200Pages This thriller is doing double duty for my #Scareathlon point tally. It‘s worth 2 points for being on theme for #TeamSlaughter plus 1point for fulfilling the scavenger hunt prompt, then another point for a participation post! That‘s 4points for 1 book. Not bad hey.
