From the author of the critically acclaimed bestseller The Ruin comes a compulsive new crime thriller featuring DS Cormac Reilly. Being brilliant has never been this dangerous ... When Dr Emma Sweeney stumbles across the victim of a hit and run outside Galway University late one evening, she calls her partner, Detective Cormac Reilly, bringing him first to the scene of a murder that would otherwise never have been assigned to him. A security card in the dead woman's pocket identifies her as Carline Darcy, a gifted student and heir apparent to Irish pharmaceutical giant Darcy Therapeutics. The multi-billion-dollar company, founded by her grandfather, has a finger in every pie, from sponsoring university research facilities to funding political parties to philanthropy - it has funded Emma's own ground-breaking research. The enquiry into Carline's death promises to be high profile and high pressure. As Cormac investigates, evidence mounts that the death is linked to a Darcy laboratory and, increasingly, to Emma herself. Cormac is sure she couldn't be involved, but as his running of the case comes under scrutiny from the department and his colleagues, he is forced to question his own objectivity. Could his loyalty to Emma have led him to overlook evidence? Has it made him a liability?

I read this for the Girly Book Club, and I had read the first in this series. I liked this read better than the first.
This one was very unpredictable. Cormac's girlfriend happens upon a dead co-ed, and becomes the number one suspect. Things are not what they seem.
I enjoyed digging deeper into Cormac's character, who is flawed in many ways, yet easy to like. Looking forward to reading more.

Love these women. Our club has been meeting for 23 years, with three of us being original members. @Jeg sad you couldn‘t make it today 🙁.

We have a tradition of Secret Santa book-giving for Christmas & I got the tagged book, which I‘m pretty happy about since I read & enjoyed her first book, The Ruin. This is her second 👍🙏. #grateful

I enjoyed this just as much as the first book in the series. It was nice to get more from the POV of Carrie. The personal connection of the mystery to Cormac and Emma definitely raised the tension. Similar to the first book, the discovery of different clues is paced well, and there are enough little twists that kept me guessing killer until very close to when it was revealed. The audiobook narrator is fantastic.

I traveled by bus to Boston last night to meet my sister. I have a kindle so I traveled light with these books. So two book spine poetry!
I am so excited! My sister is at a nurse practitioners‘ conference and she invited me to join her until Monday! Lovely hotel near the waterfront. Plan to read today, drink coffee, take a walk, maybe hot tub....☕️🏙📚 The day is wide open.

LiteraryinLititz Sounds like fun! Solo time balanced with sister time = awesome! 2mo

#ScaryScavengerHunt #ThatsOver200Pages This thriller is doing double duty for my #Scareathlon point tally. It‘s worth 2 points for being on theme for #TeamSlaughter plus 1point for fulfilling the scavenger hunt prompt, then another point for a participation post! That‘s 4points for 1 book. Not bad hey. Helps that it was quite a good book, the 2nd in the Cormac Reilly series, a DI in Galway, Ireland. #PointsTotal-24

Jerdencon I am a big fan of this series!

After falling asleep and having a “nanna nap” while listening to The Witness, I‘m now awake & alert enough to get back into this thriller based in Galway, Ireland. I should finish this tonight, not sure if I‘ll follow up with some more #audiojournaling or another book off my #Scareathlon #TBR Any preferences from my team mates? #TeamSlaughter 1point #PointsTotal-18

Brought this book all the way to Ireland with me to read and it never left the bag because I had no time to read and can‘t read in a moving car. So now it‘s come to the beach back in NY!

Just finished on a wild and woolly morning here in Perth. I think I liked this better than her first, though both are very good. Look forward to the next one due out in 2020. Love that she lives here now. @MrsMalaprop

Cormac Reilly is finally given the chance to escape from cold cases, to take over a new homicide investigation. His partner Emma discovers the victim of a fatal hit and run, whose father is the head of a big pharma company which is funding Emma‘s research research. Cormac has enemies, powerful interests dictating the investigation parameters, and for a dreadful time he begins to doubt Emma. Excellent follow up to The Ruin;fast and fun.

Cathythoughts Sounds good ! Started The Ruin ... but got side -tracked. Must give it another go ♥️👍🏻 8mo

Another classy, pacy police procedural from Dervla McTiernan. Not quite as twisty as her first novel, but still a great example of the genre and we are all just a little bit in love with DS Cormack Reilly #aussieapril #AWW2019

#BookMail Pt8 This is the authors 2nd novel which was released last week. I‘ve been very lucky to be able find signed copies of so many books from Booktopia.com.au Waterstones.com & Goldsboro.com plus from book sub boxes. I‘m planning on making a section just for them.DS Cormac Reilly is back. When his girlfriend Emma stumbles across a hit&run victim he‘s first on the scene of a murder he wouldn‘t have gotten otherwise. Then Emma becomes a suspect.

kspenmoll Sounds like an intriguing read.📚❤️ 11mo
