A comedy writer thinks she's sworn off love, until a dreamily handsome pop star flips the script on all her assumptions--a hilarious, observant and deeply tender novel from the New York Times bestselling author of Eligible, Rodham, and Prep. Sally Milz is a sketch writer for The Night Owls, the late-night live comedy show that airs each Saturday. With a couple of heartbreaks under her belt, she's long abandoned the search for love, settling instead for the occasional hook-up, career success, and a close relationship with her stepfather to round out a satisfying life. But when Sally's friend and fellow writer Danny Horst begins dating Annabel, a glamorous actress who guest-hosted the show, he joins the not-so-exclusive group of talented but average-looking and even dorky men at the show--and in society at large--who've gotten romantically involved with incredibly beautiful and accomplished women. Sally channels her annoyance into a sketch called the Danny Horst Rule, poking fun at this phenomenon while underscoring how unlikely it is that the reverse would ever happen for a woman. Enter Noah Brewster, a pop music sensation with a reputation for dating models, who signed on as both host and musical guest for this week's show. Dazzled by his charms, Sally hits it off with Noah instantly, and as they collaborate on one sketch after another, she begins to wonder if there might actually be sparks flying. But this isn't a romantic comedy--it's real life. And in real life, someone like him would never date someone like her . . . right? With her keen observations and trademark ability to bring complex women to life on the page, Curtis Sittenfeld explores the neurosis-inducing and heart-fluttering wonder of love, while slyly dissecting the social rituals of romance and gender relations in the modern age.

1) My mother would not let me get my ears pierced so I once came back from an overnight Girl Scout trip with peace sign earrings that looked as if they were pierced. She didn‘t find it funny 😆

2) The tagged book is set around a SNL type show.

#LuckyInLove Day 26: Now this is #RomCom in the literal sense as can be seen in the title. I was entertained by the story which I read with my daughter for our book club of 2 last summer and she was laughing her ass off as she read the part on the email correspondence, because she thought it was very “old people flirting.” My full review: https://wp.me/pDlzr-pBl

I liked this story a lot but the format was tough to get through in parts. Not a lot of chapter breaks and the last chunk of the book was a long one. Although, I did like how each chapter was written differently. I liked the relationship between Sally and Noah and the characters in this book. It felt very real to me and I enjoyed the fact that for a romance about a celebrity and a writer, it wasn‘t over the top for the most part.

⭐️⭐️⭐️This book was interesting because while there were aspects I loved-hello, e-mail romance, happy to see you again!-there were also things that I didn‘t love or were distracting from the main story. Sittenfeld had a lot of political comments to make, and they felt so heavy handed that it took me out of the story. But I did love the male main character, the side characters, and the real, if sometimes cringey, look at relationship anxiety, etc.

Victoriahoperose I agree with this so much. It wasn‘t enough for me to dislike it but I see why the ratings weren‘t higher. I also personally hated that she didn‘t break up the chapters more 😂😂😂 2mo

Wow! I almost set this book aside at the beginning because I couldn't quite get into it, but I'm so glad I stuck with it. The title doesn't do this book justice. Set prior to and during the pandemic, some of the conversations between the main characters, Sally and Noah, are very deep. At times, it was tough reliving pandemic life, but it was also reassuring that what we were all feeling was important enough for an author to document it in a novel.

I've been on a lucky streak with books lately. This is one I listened to on audio and really liked. Sally is a sketch writer for a tv show (exactly like SNL) who falls in love with a famous singer who is a guest host. One of the most realistic, relatable, funny love stories I've come across. It made my cooking and cleaning for Christmas fly by! I hope this gets made into a movie because it would be so good. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

I‘ll admit, I thought I knew the story in this one and I avoided it for a while. Bucking all trends, a more attractive rockstar falls in love with a writer at an SNL-style show. It sounded like a gimmick, but the author gives the story depth. Much of it takes place during the pandemic and many of the anxieties the main character feels are so relatable. It‘s definitely not a romcom, more of a story of letting your guard down to let love in.

GondorGirl I was pleasantly surprised, too, by how much depth this book had! 6mo

I liked, but did not love this book. Read along with #CampLitsy in August.

It had a great premise: female MC is a Tina Fey-esque writer for an SNL-esque comedy sketch show whose insecurities continually sabotage a potential romance with a super-famous musician. Clearly inspired by the Pete Davidson/Ariana Grande or Colin Jost/ScarJo relationships, I was fascinated by that aspect of the plot, but the FMC‘s attitude/behavior was a huge turn off.

Relatively cliche story with no real twists. The story was basically a woman overcoming her self esteem issues because a man loved them out of her. The dialogue wasn't anything special, which is unfortunate given that it was set in a spoof of SNL. You have to imagine that comedy writers would be funnier than what was portrayed here.

Ah, crap. I had this book on hold for a while, and then I got lucky and skipped the line. Unfortunately, I just couldn't get into it. I'm not a fan of SNL (I don't even watch it), so I think that's one of the reasons. But I still wanted to try it since I do read romance and have seen good reviews. This would have been my first Sittenfeld book, too, but now I'm not sure if I even want to try something else of hers. I feel bad. 😞

I enjoyed this contemporary romance between a musician and a writer on a sketch comedy show (a lá SNL), but didn‘t love it. I think reading about sketch comedy is a tall order. Sketches that might be funny on screen, fell flat on paper. I would‘ve loved more growth/de-centering of men on Sally‘s part. I didn‘t find any deeper meaning if Sittenfield was trying for it, and instead got a garden-variety rom-com ready for syndication on TBS. 3⭐️

batsy Your last sentence captures my issue with the book! 6mo

Late to the party on this one and I did really enjoy it. What surprised me was that it seemed to me like a standard romance and with all of the hype it was given I was expecting some sort of new take on the genre. It was still a good romance with a relatable heroin and an interesting backstage view of working at a sketch comedy show like SNL. It made me laugh, it made me emotional so a pick for me.

A sweet and smart romance set an SNL-like show, where Sally, one of the writers, notices how the schlubby male comedians keep landing much hotter and talented girlfriends. And then…Sally herself seems to hit it off with one week‘s musical guest. But how can she trust that the formula works in reverse? Anyway I loved this whole thing.

We have an August winner for #camplitsy23 - Romantic Comedy!

Probably not much of a surprise, seeing as a lot of Littens either bailed on or disliked The Memory of Animals. However, not as much of a landslide victory as we may have thought; 27 votes to 11.

Our wonderful Camp Leader, Barbara, will be posting tomorrow for the opportunity to vote for your favourite book of the summer so keep looking out for her post!

My life is so hectic now, mostly not in a good way.🫤Reading is my therapy, my refuge, and I am having so much trouble carving out the time. 8 or 9 books behind on my goodreads goal. Hope it turns around soon . Is there some sort of serenity prayer for stifled readers?

I really adored this. I don't think I have read anything by Sittenfeld, and this was somehow not what I was expecting. Maybe the title was too on the nose? But I loved living with Sally and Noah. I‘m not a big romance reader but this was really good and not at all what I was expecting. It‘s really, really funny and gives a behind the scenes sort of view of a particular late night sketch comedy show and what it might really look like to date a super famous celebrity. That being said it also dealt with more serious topics, like Covid sickness and insecurities, and I liked this more well rounded, imperfect approach to relationships. 🌟🌟🌟🌟
