Romantic Comedy
Romantic Comedy | Curtis Sittenfeld
A comedy writer thinks she's sworn off love, until a dreamily handsome pop star flips the script on all her assumptions--a hilarious, observant and deeply tender novel from the New York Times bestselling author of Eligible, Rodham, and Prep. Sally Milz is a sketch writer for The Night Owls, the late-night live comedy show that airs each Saturday. With a couple of heartbreaks under her belt, she's long abandoned the search for love, settling instead for the occasional hook-up, career success, and a close relationship with her stepfather to round out a satisfying life. But when Sally's friend and fellow writer Danny Horst begins dating Annabel, a glamorous actress who guest-hosted the show, he joins the not-so-exclusive group of talented but average-looking and even dorky men at the show--and in society at large--who've gotten romantically involved with incredibly beautiful and accomplished women. Sally channels her annoyance into a sketch called the Danny Horst Rule, poking fun at this phenomenon while underscoring how unlikely it is that the reverse would ever happen for a woman. Enter Noah Brewster, a pop music sensation with a reputation for dating models, who signed on as both host and musical guest for this week's show. Dazzled by his charms, Sally hits it off with Noah instantly, and as they collaborate on one sketch after another, she begins to wonder if there might actually be sparks flying. But this isn't a romantic comedy--it's real life. And in real life, someone like him would never date someone like her . . . right? With her keen observations and trademark ability to bring complex women to life on the page, Curtis Sittenfeld explores the neurosis-inducing and heart-fluttering wonder of love, while slyly dissecting the social rituals of romance and gender relations in the modern age.

I loved this. It's really freaking cute. It starts out as a journal of a writer from an SNL type show, switches to an epistolary email exchange between her and a guest host and then is basically prose. It has If You Ask Me vibes and reminded me how much I enjoyed Eligible. It's also possible there were some early morning tears on the train.

Book 102🎧 4.4⭐️

This was just so darn cute!! And I am a SUCKER for Sally‘s job so was instantly taken💕

Filled with tons of amazing one liners and comedic banter(my fave🤫)
I wish Sally wasn‘t such a self saboteur but aren‘t we all.

I don‘t do this genre very often so I was very pleased how good this was.

Amazing! My favorite Sittenfeld yet. I loved this peek behind the SNL curtains-it was funny and heartfelt and Sally and Noah are great characters you just want to spend time with. With portions of the book set during Covid, it made it feel even more timely and real. The examination of comedy, feminism, celebrity, self esteem, and love made for a fascinating, enjoyable, fast read. And the writing-chef‘s kiss! #20in4 @Andrew65 #BookspinBingo

This is a solid novel version of a reliable B+ rom-com movie that imagines Liz Lemon falling in with a pop star. It is, at best, easy, undemanding, kinda forgettable & a bit cringy
It is also not very fresh? Or innovative? And maybe that's okay? Or maybe, to quote Liz Lemon, blergh!

On my Sittenfeld scale, not as dull as Sisterland but less engaging than American Wife. Very middling.
But maybe I'm grouchy! How will it fare at #camplitsy23?!

bnp Lovely green & pink! 2w
merelybookish The main character is from Kansas City so I did enjoy the local references, having lived there for 10+ years. Also points for all the Indigo Girls love! Sometimes with Sittenfeld, I feel she writes my demographic (age/gender/race/politics/pop culture, etc. Etc) SO well that it almost makes me resentful. Like I want us to be better! 2w
Ruthiella Love the “Sittenfeld Scale”! 😂 2w

merelybookish @Ruthiella Thanks! I should really read Rodham and then my scale could be complete. 😉 2w
BarbaraBB I am saving it for August but am very curious what I‘ll think. I absolutely loved the tagged book and all other Sittenfelds I read couldn‘t compare to that one 😀 2w
merelybookish @BarbaraBB Oh I've read a few of her short stories and I enjoyed them! But haven't read the whole collection. And will be interested in your thoughts on RC! 2w
jlhammar 😆 Awesome review! I‘m keeping my expectations low with this one. I didn‘t really like Rodham all that much. I do love me some Indigo Girls though so looking forward to that. 2w
LeahBergen Oh, how I love Bleeding Hearts! They make me all nostalgic for my childhood. 🥰 2w
Dragon Gorgeous bleeding hearts 🌺 💚🐉 2w
sarahbarnes This will be my first Sittenfeld and I'm very intrigued by the hype! It's got a lot of fans at the library! 2w
rockpools I‘m nervous about this one. I LOVED American Wife (roughly a lifetime ago)… and haven‘t read anything else by her since, so think I might need to work on ‘expectations‘ 🫤 2w
merelybookish @jlhammar Maybe it will exceed your expectations! It's perfectly fine but also, maybe I'd just rather watch a romantic comedy? 🤷 2w
merelybookish @LeahBergen @dragon I love them! They are so perfectly named! 2w
merelybookish @sarahbarnes I think it's a Reese Witherspoon book club pic which might explain some of the demand. But I will be interested to hear what you think! I do think some of her other work is better. 2w
merelybookish @rockpools That is by far her best novel imo, although I also like Prep a lot! And maybe you will like this one too! It is, as it says, a romantic comedy. So take it at face value. (Maybe I was hoping for something a bit more.) 2w
Dragon Agreed 🩷💚🐉 2w
Vansa I found this book quite terrible.SO MUCH about the background of SNL-if i wanted such an in depth look at how SNL works,I would just read nonfiction about it-theres so much available. Also I found it extremely irritating that a woman in her mid30s lacks confidence to such a dramatic extent about her looks-the guy is saintly, and the protagonist is an idiot. It also completely lacks humour!(1/2) 2w
Vansa (2/2)And her attempts at mimicking "Gen Z speak" are ridiculous-"and they lived heteronormatively ever after"? Unbearable. As a fan of romance novels,it really annoys me that this book is getting gushed about, just because Sittenfeld has written some good books earlier-judge the book by what it is.Its not more intelligent or literary. There are actual Mills&Boon novels I've read that are better!I shall step off my soapbox now? 2w
Vansa I read everything Sittenfeld writes and I find that her books have considerably worsened over the last decade. 2w
batsy Ahahaha! The Liz Lemon bits made me laugh. Great review; I'll adjust my expectations accordingly. 2w
merelybookish @Vansa Oh, thank you! I'm so glad you got on your soapbox! 👏 😁 I also thought setting it at SNL was tired. Like portraying the life of a writer at a sketch comedy show has been done. (30 Rock was great & it's over a decade old now.) And yes, Noah is perfect and she's such a flake. As the for the Gen X thing, her liberal politics often feel outdated & performative. (like one best friend is Black and the other is gay. ☑️☑️) 🙄 2w
merelybookish @Vansa I am not a romance reader but do enjoy rom com movies. This felt derivative. Like what was the point. It's been done before and it's been done better. 2w
merelybookish @batsy Yeah...I think the best part of the book was @vansa comments on this thread! 😆 2w

Romance is not my genre, and I've had mixed experiences with Sittenfeld's novels, so it was a lovely surprise to find myself so immersed in this novel that I stayed up into the wee hours to finish it. I even loved the lockdown email exchange, and I usually loathe epistolary storytelling. It's emotionally real, the friendships are jealousy-inducing, and it's so sexy when the guy is like, "I'm sorry, I said something wrong. Please let me clarify."

BarbaraBB This sounds super intriguing! Looking forward to it! 2w
merelybookish I just finished today as well. I did not love it but happy to hear you did! 2w
ImperfectCJ @merelybookish I want to call it cheesy, but I feel like Sittenfeld anticipated that reaction during the writing of the novel. Maybe I'm just in the mood for cheese at the moment, especially after Bret Easton Ellis. :-) 2w
ImperfectCJ @BarbaraBB I'm curious what you'll think about it. I read it early in part because I was half-convinced I'd DNF it...I'm not sure how much my very low expectations affected my enjoyment of the novel! 2w

This was an enjoyable read. I‘ve read Prep and Eligible too and liked them a lot. I don‘t Love CS but I will read everything she writes. This story revolves around Sally Milz, a writer for TNO which is obviously SNL. The descriptions of TNO things are so easily identifiable as SNL one wonders if there is any fiction in here 🤣

I like Sittenfeld but rom-coms aren‘t my jam, so I figured this would be a mixed bag for me and it was. I did find parts of it quite funny, but I find the genre predictable in ways that don‘t work for me, and that was true here. I wouldn‘t have picked this up if not for Camp Litsy, but at least I didn‘t hate it!

Hello campers! I‘ll be leading our discussions in August.

We‘ll read Romantic Comedy first, discussing it on the weekends of 5th/6th and 12th/13th, followed by The Memory of Animals on the following two weekends. Page / chapter numbers will be confirmed during July.

Then it will be the end of camp (let‘s not think about that now! 😭) and time to vote for your overall favourite - I wonder which book it will be?! All 6 sound fab!

Another audio book, I am definitely enjoying listening to more fiction books on audio. For me this was my kind of romantic story, not too cheesy. I liked the story of Sally & Noah. Plus a story of someone finding love close to their 40s was a story line I liked. I also have a deeply sarcastic attitude like Sally. It was a quick, fun listen. I think I liked this more because of the audio version. #bookspin book

A stronger pick than I expected. The research Sittenfeld put into creating her SNL-equivalent must have taken her forever. It set such a good scene for the first half of the book and really sucked me in. The women in this were all so well-written and fun characters to get to know. I haven‘t always been a Sittenfeld fan but this one really worked for me.

Greatly enjoyed! Despite being a longtime Curtis Sittenfeld completist, I went into this with low expectations bc of mixed reviews. Totally worked for me, though. There was kind of a lot about the SNL clone workplace of the main character in the beginning of the book, but I was fine with that. I liked how COVID factored into the story, too. Sittenfeld‘s writing always pleases me (and has since I stumbled upon Prep at the library back in 2005! 💖).

The completely perfect vacation read. Funny, romantic and real, or at least as real as a relationship between a comedy writer and a pop star heart throb can be!
Sally, a self described “self-sabotaging ass-hat,” despite her highly tuned romantic cynicism, falls for aging teen heartthrob Noah, then messes it up royally. Then the pandemic changes everything and they unexpectedly become pen-pals of sorts. (Continued in comments….)

KarenUK ….I love how Sittenfeld takes all the tropes of a rom-com, but gave me something that felt like it had genuine grown up emotions, faux-pas and hiccups. Optimistically lovely. #pop23 #52books2020 #typographiccover #bn2023challenge #makesyoulaugh 2mo

This book is absolutely full of sentences that are clunky, and she seems to be trying to virtue signal on nearly every page. The last sentence here, for instance-this is good advice, why undermine it this way? There are several instances of sexism at work-this is hardly one of them.Im actually dreading the rest of this badly written book.

I was able to get a NetGalley ARC of this one. This book is an absolute delight. Sally is a writer for a fictional SNL. There she meets a musical guest who is a pop star and there is a connection. This has 3 sections-1 where they are preparing for the live show, 2-a epistolary email section & a 3rd section during Covid times. This is a very “now” book, which is mildly political (left leaning), and very funny.⬇️
