Y con el espeluznante presentimiento de que algo maligno le est aprisionando el corazn, la joven comienza a investigar el verdadero destino de Rebeca: el oscuro secreto de Manderley. ENGLISH DESCRIPTION Now a Netflix film starring Lily James, Armie Hammer, and Kristin Scott Thomas A PBS Great American Read Top 100 PickLast night I dreamt I went to Manderly again. With these words, the reader is ushered into an isolated gray stone mansion on the windswept Cornish coast, as the second Mrs. Maxim de Winter recalls the chilling events that transpired as she began her new life as the young bride of a husband she barely knew. For in every corner of every room were phantoms of a time dead but not forgotten--a past devotedly preserved by the sinister housekeeper, Mrs. Danvers: a suite immaculate and untouched, clothing laid out and ready to be worn, but not by any of the great house's current occupants. With an eerie presentiment of evil tightening her heart, the second Mrs. de Winter walked in the shadow of her mysterious predecessor, determined to uncover the darkest secrets and shattering truths about Maxim's first wife--the late and hauntingly beautiful Rebecca. This special edition of Rebecca includes excerpts from Daphne du Maurier's The Rebecca Notebook and Other Memories, an essay on the real Manderley, du Maurier's original epilogue to the book, and more.

I am HIGHLY SUSPICIOUS of this costume suggestion Danny has provided. Did Rebecca always dress as this portrait? Or will Jan look like Rebecca when she is dressed up? It‘s too easy… something awful is going to happen. This is a long chapter! #hashtagbrigade

BarkingMadRead This was 💯 a set up, I‘m guessing because of rebecca? The reaction was awful! I felt so bad for Jan! 22h

IndoorDame For someone who was promised to be super forthcoming with her opinions I found Beatrice pretty cryptic. I think “not Rebecca” is a positive grade from the new SIL, but I definitely wouldn‘t be sure if I were in Jan‘s (super unfashionable) shoes 1w

'Of course, she said, you know why he is marrying you, don't you? You haven't flattered yourself he‘s in love with you? The fact is that empty house got on his nerves to such an extent he nearly went off his head. He admitted as much before you came into the room. He just can't go on living there alone…‘

#hashtagbrigade I‘m curious what you guys think ⬇️

IndoorDame I‘ve never been able to decide in any of my readings if this quote is Mrs. Van H. screwing with her to be cruel because she didn‘t get her way and doesn‘t like that she didn‘t know something was going on between them, or if Max really said this because he‘s just that cold…? Both seem equally possible to me. 2w
BarkingMadRead Ive always wavered on this. I don‘t know if it‘s in her personality to be kind 2w
Roary47 My first time reader mind is Max is just lonely. He might not be a bad guy per se, but I don‘t think he‘s in love. 2w
Ruthiella I think Maxim did say it because he knows the kind of woman Mrs. Hopper is and he knew saying it would keep the interview short. Whether he meant it is another story. I‘ll wait till we all get to the end to weigh in. 2w
IndoorDame @Ruthiella oooh, layers upon layers. Another possibility. 2w

I had read the first chapter back during #scarathlon, then was distracted by other reads, but I finally finished, and it is very much a classic. A slow burn Gothic horror with tons of atmosphere and dread.

Browsing about Cornwall, I came across several articles about Menabilly House, du Maurier's inspiration for Manderley. This is Daphne with her children at Menabilly, which she leased for 26 years. The details in Rebecca of the second Mrs. de Winter becoming enamoured with Manderley as a child while on holiday mirrors du Maurier's own experience with Menabilly.

https://www.tatler.com/article/menabilly-the-real-manderley-rebecca-daphne-du-ma...

TieDyeDude I'll have to bookmark the link. I just start reading this, about 3 chapters in. 2mo

Bookwomble @TieDyeDude @BeeCurious Just so you know, there are no spoilers in the article. The direct references it makes are to the novel's first paragraph, otherwise it's about du Maurier's experience with the real house. It's pretty short, but has interesting photos 😊 2mo

SpellboundReader @Bookwomble - I just read the article and really enjoyed the additional information and the photos. Thank you. 🙂 As it mentions, Menabilly also plays a significant role in The King's General, which I have read before. It's not quite as thrilling as Rebecca but still a well written gothic historical fiction and romance novel. 2mo

"There was a strange buzzing at the end of the line, and then a voice came, low and rather harsh, whether that of a woman or a man I could not tell, and 'Mrs de Winter?' it said, 'Mrs de Winter?'
'I'm afraid you've made a mistake,' I said; 'Mrs de Winter has been dead for over a year.'"

This is such a fantastic scene in the book, showing how unsure of herself and her identity is The Second Mrs de Winter ? I so want to reassure her ?

Ruthiella Agree. I know that some readers get frustrated by the second Mrs. de Winter‘s passivity, but I think du Maurier gets it just right. I love how Rebecca haunts everyone. 2mo

He was right. The tangerine was very sour. I had a sharp, bitter taste in my mouth, and I had only just noticed it."

This incident at the breakfast when Maxim proposes marriage to the narrator feels foreshadowy ??

The overbearing Mrs Van Hopper peevishly remonstrates with the future Second Mrs de Winter for neglecting to collect her Taxol medication. Wondering what Taxol is a remedy for, I was initially surprised to see it's a cancer treatment, then seeing it was developed for that purpose well after the book's publication, dug further to find the name was previously used for a constipation preparation. ⬇️

Bookwomble Now, although cancer is a more serious condition, constipation is no laughing matter itself; I do wonder, though, if du Maurier was mockingly hinting how full of 💩 Mrs Van Hopper is? 🤔 (edited) 3mo
SamAnne Taxol the cancer drug was developed from the Pacific Yew tree in the Pacific Northwest USA. It was being destroyed by the overlogging, decimation of our old growth mature forests. I worked on the efforts to halt the destruction. Today it‘s made synthetically. But another reminder of the importance to protect natural areas, biodiversity. (edited) 3mo
Bookwomble @SamAnne I did read about the "cancer Taxol" when I was searching for the "constipation Taxol", and about the environmental concerns. Cool that you were involved in the efforts to stop deforestation ??? 3mo

AnnR Wow, how did I miss all this when I read Rebecca years ago? I probably speed through it and didn't pick up on some subtle things I should have. Thanks for the comments and information @Bookwomble and @SamAnne . 🙂 (edited) 3mo
AnnR Adding: Since #pemberlittens are reading Rebecca in April, I will try to pay more attention to the details. 3mo
Bookwomble @AnnR I let the first mention of Taxol go by as simply the thing the narrator forgot so that DduM could illustrate Mrs Van H's pettiness, but when it was mentioned again my curiosity was piqued and I wanted to learn what it was. I guess lots of little "Easter eggs" escape us readers, particularly when it's an older book with references now obscure. I did recognise the Eno brand of "liver salts" that Max takes as my nana used it. It was mainly ⬇️ 3mo
Bookwomble @AnnR ... mainly taken as an antacid for dyspepsia, and if I was to strain the metaphor, as "dyspeptic" by association means being melancholic and morose, perhaps this is another DduM way of signalling a character's personality? (Sorry, I didn't mean to turn it into a TED Talk!) 3mo
AnnR @Bookwomble - Not to worry as I appreciate your explanations and generally enjoy Ted Talks anyway, lol. I agree about your 'Easter Eggs' comments. I'd expect the liver salts reference to completely go over my head but Taxol I should have immediately picked up on so it's bugging me now. I'll highlight the passages this time around in my ebook version, when I reread it soon. 🙂🙂🙂 3mo

Hmm, this one's a bit overdue, but all good things...

quietlycuriouskate I've long since lost count of how many times I've read this book. 😊 3mo
ShyBookOwl I adore this book and re-read it about once every year or two. Reading that first line always gives me chills from the excitement 😍 3mo

I am thrilled to join the club of readers who have enjoyed Rebecca. The elegant writing and fascinating story were a true pleasure. The opening chapters were beautifully written and had me mesmerized while also curious about this place called Manderley. After I finished the book, I immediately reread the first couple of chapters. It felt fitting, as the beginning was just as significant as the ending.

How is it already Halloween and the last day of #scarathlon??? This month always goes by so fast. For the final day of #autumnplease here‘s one of the great literary costumes, the narrator accidentally dressing as Rebecca

1) I can‘t remember how old I was when I first read Rebecca but I was young. I became so enamored with it I would re-check it out over and over again from the library
2) Many. When my kids were young they‘d come to every grandparent event at school. They share in so many happy family times!
3) My 35th wedding anniversary—husband secretly took a woodworking class and made me a handmade pen. Oh my ❤️

Bklover 3. He‘s a keeper! 6mo

A newly wed wife is completely overshadowed by the wonderful late wife of Mr. DeWinter.

I enjoyed this book but felt like it could have been cut in half if the main character and her husband spoke to each other about what was bothering them.

rubyslippersreads I ❤️ this book, but that‘s one of the worst covers I‘ve ever seen. 😂 7mo
freeatlast1137 @rubyslippersreads lol, it definitely is. 😂 I bet it turns a lot of people away from the book if they judge a book by its cover. 7mo

Mehso-so

I have been interested in reading this book for a while. Unfortunately I am a little disappointed in it. I just felt that the author spent too much time in the description and not enough in the story. The ending almost made the book for me. But it fell just a little short. I don't know if I would read anything else by this author. If I was giving it a star rating, I would give it a 3 star rating.

Goodwill book haul.

I think I might have scored on that edition of Rebecca...

Also, I mentioned to my friend who was with me that, by buying these books, I was breaking a vow I made to not buy any more until I finished the pile next to my bed.

"That was a stupid vow anyway," was her ever supportive response ?

dabbe I like your friend. 🤣❣️🤣 13mo
