If you‘re looking for a book that follows the spiritualism of just Lincoln and JW Booth, you‘re not really going to find it here. If, instead, you are interested in reading about the influence of spiritualism on the Lincoln family and the Booth family, as well friends, then this is the book for you. Some of the stories I knew from other readings; others I did not. Overall, I was fascinated by Alford‘s examination of the beliefs ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Librarybelle 🔼🔼🔼 of those tied to the families. Towards the end of the book, Alford really explores more of friends‘ interactions with spiritualism as well as nefarious deeds they commit, which kind of veered away from the spiritualist focus of most of the book. Finished this morning with all of my guys with me… #Zeke #Vladimir #SebastianKitty #Xander #CatsOfLitsy 1mo

Just finished rereading this one for an upcoming book discussion at the library. I appreciate the snarky humor interlaced with the slow build of the story. I‘m looking forward to reading this series with my library‘s book discussion group!

For the #AwesomeAugust #Readathon , I‘m aiming for my usual goal of 20 hours.

Sunday afternoon means time relaxing with cats. #Zeke #Xander #CatsOfLitsy

robinb I have never read this author, but she seems very prolific. Her name pops up everywhere. 2mo
LapReader Love that rug. 2mo
Librarybelle @robinb And she keeps writing! 2mo

Librarybelle @LapReader It‘s a very comfy blanket, but the cats treat it like a rug! 2mo
robinb @Librarybelle Does she do stand-alones or series? Or both? Anywhere I should start with her? 2mo
Librarybelle @robinb She writes the Commissario Brunetti series set in Venice. I‘m just starting out on the series for my virtual book discussion group I lead at the library, but from what I understand, the characters age as the series progresses, so it‘s definitely good to start at the beginning. This one is the first. I think she wrote a novel too, but she‘s known for this mystery series. 2mo
robinb @Librarybelle Great, thanks for the info. I‘ll like to get to her sometime. 😂🤪 2mo
rwmg I've got this on my virtual TBR list. Do I need to start another long-running series? When has that ever stopped me before? 2mo
Librarybelle @rwmg I know exactly what you mean! 2mo

Set in Pennsylvania in the 1920s, this novel is told in the voice of Mary Engel, who lands a coveted position at an institution for young women who are thought to be a danger to themselves and others. But, are they? Leary writes a novel based on historical knowledge of these types of institutions and the eugenics movement. Be warned - parts are unsettling, but I was enthralled with the story. #192025 #2022 #Xander #Zeke #CatsOfLitsy

Excellent Women | Barbara Pym
post image
Pickpick

I‘ve yet to read anything by Pym, but I suspect I‘ll be reading more by her.

Mildred is an “excellent woman,” an unmarried woman of a certain age who helps her church and her community. When new neighbors move into her house, chaos, to a degree, ensues. I found myself sympathizing with Mildred quite a lot. The characters are witty, & Pym‘s writing style is satirical and engaging. Great choice for #PemberLittens ! #ExcellentWomenAndBoiledPotatoes

The Duchess Countess | Catherine Ostler

Talk about a real life soap opera! This biography chronicles the infamous 18th century Elizabeth Chudleigh, whose trials and tribulations mingling with the aristocracy and royalty is so fascinating. Just when you think her story is going to calm down…nope! This is not a fast read - it took me weeks to get through the book. But, Ostler chalks this full of so much information, and it‘s clear Chudleigh‘s influence is still felt today.

The Watsons | Jane Austen
post image
Pickpick

I chose to read just the portion of the story Austen wrote, so quickly finished for #PemberLittens !

There is much humor and witty observations in this tiny bit of story, so you can kind of see the direction Austen was going with this. The Watsons themselves are caricatures of a variety of personalities, and I would probably go crazy if I had to hang out with a couple of the sisters for awhile! 😂

MicrobeMom Yay! So happy you enjoyed. I do think it would have been great if she had finished it. 3mo

What brings me peace? My sweet little guys. This is an older picture, as it is rare for all 4 to be with me at the same time (2 of them do not get along).

Holding cats, reading a book, and burning a candle are great ways to calm me down. #ThoughtfulThursday

Among the Janeites | Deborah Yaffe

Life has been incredibly busy, especially thanks to work and navigating some personal things. Not much down time, but I‘m aiming to read 20 hours for #AwesomeApril . I haven‘t made it in the last few months, but it‘s been fun to see what I can do!

The cats also miss my down time. Here is #Xander and #Zeke flanking me as I prepare to begin the #readathon with the tagged book, which I‘ll be discussing on Monday night for my library. #catsoflitsy

Andrew65 I can definitely relate to these comments, struggled to read as much as usual recently. Hope the Readathon helps. Good luck 😊👍 6mo
Librarybelle Thank you, @Andrew65 ! 6mo
lirahlu I've never measured how much time I read each month. It's an interesting concept. Seems like it takes a bit of effort too. Good for you! 6mo
Librarybelle @lirahlu I‘m keeping track for the #readathon @Andrew65 hosts in the middle of each month. I don‘t always remember to track! 😂 I‘d do a terrible job if I tried to track for the whole month…I‘m way better if it‘s for just a couple of days. 6mo

Sanditon | Jane Austen
post image
Pickpick

Thanks to #PemberLittens , I finally had an opportunity to read this one! I think the “Another Lady” captured the essence of Austen‘s words well - it‘s not an exact copy, but the spirit is there. It was an enjoyable stroll through Sanditon & its menagerie of eccentric characters and situations. I‘ll probably think of seaweed differently now!

I finished this morning surrounded by my boys. #SebastianKitty #Zeke #Xander #Vladimir #catsoflitsy
