Bookwormjillk That was something. But also, ladies, if your man doesn‘t like the way you look when you‘re thinking 🚩🚩🚩#longchapter #somuchtounpack 2w

Librarybelle So true, @Bookwormjillk ! Maxim is not man of the year in my mind…he probably would not like the look on my face as I was reading that section. 2w
BarkingMadRead @Librarybelle @Bookwormjillk I would be in so much trouble because I can never seem to shut off my face 🤣🤣🤣 2w
Crinoline_Laphroaig It's such a Train Wreck of a Chapter. I know what's going to happen and still I yell at Jan 'WHY WOULD YOU TRUST THE EVIL MRS D"⁉️ 2w
Crinoline_Laphroaig 'Oh don't treat me like a child' as she continually acts like one with the daydreaming and hiding around corners. And the fingers in her mouth and the nail biting makes me crazy. 2w
Ruthiella @Bookwormjillk 🚩🚩🚩🚩💥 2w
Ruthiella At this point, I think Jan would have been happier if she‘d married Frank Crawley aka George Glass. 2w
Clare-Dragonfly Why did she do what Danny said?! Obviously terrible idea! Also obviously terrible: Maxim yelling at her to change and of course never telling her even the slightest clue as to why everyone is so upset. I just hope Frank or Beatrice will explain in the next chapter. 2w
Clare-Dragonfly @Ruthiella Yes, I keep thinking Frank seems like a much better match for her. Maybe she‘ll throw over Maxim! 🤞🏻 2w
TheAromaofBooks Everything here was absolutely crazy, but I did laugh - yesterday, Jan is like “I may need to feign illness to make sure I don't have to have Christmas with Beatrice's crazy crew“ and today it was “Maxim, did you know Beatrice plays charades at Christmas every year?“ “Yes, that's why I never go“ 😂 😂 😂 So they do have SOME common ground! 😆 2w
Roary47 Correct me if I‘m wrong. Could she not fire Ms D? Am I correct in understanding that she wore Rebecca‘s dress? I bet she looked pretty, but man they kept telling her to dress as Alice and she just wanted to dress up and feel special. Based on her background I‘m sure this was the first time she could feel pretty in a dress, and Max just burst that bubble. What an emotional hit. 😞 2w
BarkingMadRead @Roary47 she had the dress made to match a painting of Max‘s great grandmother I think. I‘m guessing that Rebecca once did the same 2w
peanutnine @Clare-Dragonfly @Ruthiella she and Frank would be so much better together! They're both so shy and awkward 😅 2w
julieclair @Roary47 Jan can totally fire Danny. Surely she will, after this? Even though Jan has no spine, she can‘t allow Danny to keep living & working there. Can she? 2w
Clare-Dragonfly @Roary47 @julieclair I bet if it even occurs to Jan that she could fire Danny, she‘ll quail at the thought of explaining to Maxim why she wants her gone. Even though I bet he wouldn‘t even listen to any explanation she gave, he‘d just be surprised. She could do it! But she won‘t. 2w
Clare-Dragonfly @TheAromaofBooks Yes, I thought the same! 😂 2w
julieclair @Clare-Dragonfly Unfortunately, I believe you‘re correct. Poor Jan… she needs a friend who can give her advice and bolster her courage. 2w
Clare-Dragonfly @julieclair She needs a therapist! 2w
dabbe @BarkingMadRead And I believe it was the last ball they had at Manderley, so Rebecca's costume would have perhaps still been on everyone's minds--especially Maxim's. 2w
julieclair @Clare-Dragonfly 💯😂 2w
ElizaMarie Ugh!!! As soon as I read Mrs D being “nice” and offering suggestions, I assumed there was something wrong. So the whole rest of the chapter I had such anxiety (felt like watching an A24 film😬). I was just hoping to be wrong!!!! But Mrs D = 😈 1w

Bookwormjillk And at least Max doesn‘t smell or complain about soggy toast. True romance. 2w

BarkingMadRead @Bookwormjillk a girl has to have her standards 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2w
TheAromaofBooks This line really struck me, Maxim is talking: “Fancy not getting a hold of her when you broke the thing and saying, 'Here, Mrs. Danvers, get this mended.' “ This is just so typical of Maxim's perspective. He is used to servants/commands/obedience (and it sounds like Rebecca was as well). Our narrator is uncomfortable with even the concept of giving orders (we saw this when she was in Monte Carlo as well) or making demands. I think Maxim can't ⬇ 2w
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) get his head around anyone being shy of or intimidated by servants. I do feel bad for the narrator, but I honestly frequently have similar feelings to Maxim's - YOU'RE THE BOSS so step up!!! On the other hand, Maxim obviously is blind (intentionally?) to the narrator's need for some guidance and suggestions on what she should be doing, and completely leaves her hanging. 2w
Clare-Dragonfly @TheAromaofBooks Yes—it‘s similar with the socializing; he insists that it has nothing to do with being brought up to it, but that‘s because it‘s been his world for his whole life and he doesn‘t realize how different it can be for Jan. I think Clarice‘s mother quite likes her and it was nasty of him to say it was an insult! But also, anyone else think of Darcy and Lizzie when Maxim complains that Jan is shy and won‘t try to socialize? 😆 2w
KAO @TheAromaofBooks I agree with all of your observations. The descriptions in these chapters are luscious sometimes though! 2w
ElizaMarie This chapter gutted me. Poor Jan! She almost speaks up then quickly backs down and worried about Maxim‘s feelings over hers. Poor baby! Also —- she should redecorate the whole room! I feel like she was hinting at it but needs Maxim to suggest (the order the staff) to get it done. 2w
dabbe I keep reminding myself that the shy-can't-do-anything-without-approval Jan is in the past. The narrator is our future gal who seems (in my mind) much more forthright than the flashback Jan. She's her harshest critic who is looking back on herself in the cruelest of ways. I have hope for her. And Lord Byron ain't got anything next to the brooding Maxim. #hyperbyronichero 2w
rubyslippersreads Jan should have taken a page from Scarlett O‘Hara‘s book and thrown the cupid against the wall. 😂 2w
julieclair @ElizaMarie Yes! She needs to redecorate the whole room! And buy a new wardrobe. And I wish she would realize she has the power to do both. 2w

5feet.of.fury A want a moonlight picnic shed now. 3w
quietjenn @5feet.of.fury @Bookwormjillk so say we all 3w
ElizaMarie I‘m so sad for her! To feel the way she does (inadequate). I wish she was able to talk to her HUSBAND about these things, but #AtLeastSheHasFrank. He is such a sweet man :) Also, yes “modest” has a billion different meanings. #WhatDoYouMean 2w
dabbe I'm glad she has Frank, too, but ouch to his last line: “I suppose she was the most beautiful creature I ever saw in my life.“

Yet ... he calls Rebecca a “creature.“ I looked up the definition and found two interesting thoughts re: Miss-holier-than-thou Rebecca:
1. an animal, as distinct from a human being
2. a fictional being, typically a FRIGHTENING one.

Perhaps Rebecca ain't all she's cracked up to be. 🧐
2w
julieclair @dabbe The word “creature” jumped out at me, too! Such an interesting word choice. What could it mean? 🤔 2w
dabbe @julieclair Makes us want to keep reading on, right? 🤩🤩🤩 2w
julieclair @dabbe Absolutely! Du Maurier is such a gifted writer. 2w

IndoorDame For someone who was promised to be super forthcoming with her opinions I found Beatrice pretty cryptic. I think “not Rebecca” is a positive grade from the new SIL, but I definitely wouldn‘t be sure if I were in Jan‘s (super unfashionable) shoes 3w
Bookwormjillk Frustrating chapter (but in a good way.) Tell us what you know Beatrice! 3w
julieclair I like Beatrice and hope that she and Jan will become friends. And maybe Beatrice will also answer all of our (uh, I mean Jan‘s) questions! 🤞 3w
Crinoline_Laphroaig Jan is such a child. I'm surprised she didn't hide under her bed. 🤦🏻‍♀️ 3w
Clare-Dragonfly I like Beatrice! But I sure wish Jan would have asked her more questions. 3w
Graciouswarriorprincess @Crinoline_Laphroaig lol! I agree but I like Beatrice. 3w
willaful LOL at the pic! 3w
ElizaMarie Beatrice holds all the answers! 3w

Bookwormjillk And Max is telling her NOTHING 3w

BarkingMadRead @Bookwormjillk not one freaking thing. Boys are dumb 🤷🏻‍♀️ 3w
Ruthiella When I first read this in my 20s, I was swooning…now I‘m all RED FLAGS 🚩 Nameless Narrator!!!! 3w
rubyslippersreads Hmmm, is Jan‘s name really Joan? 🤣 3w
Bookwormjillk @Ruthiella 🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩 3w
ElizaMarie Um…. “I suppose you are young enough to be my daughter‘ ❓❗ Jan, honey, how old is he? 3w
TheAromaofBooks @ElizaMarie - Well, she says that she “wishes she was 36“ so I'm assuming that he's somewhere around 40 😬 3w
Ruthiella @ElizaMarie 😂 I can just see the look of concern on Carol Brady‘s face! 3w
dabbe Jan (perfect name @Ruthiella! 🤩) = Jane in JANE EYRE
Maxim = Rochester in JANE EYRE
So many likenesses to these two books and characters! 😱
3w
BarkingMadRead @dabbe there are so many similarities! 3w
julieclair Oh poor Jan, she‘s really got it bad. And I actually think Mrs. van Hopper‘s description of Max was spot on: “queer-tempered, I should think, difficult to know.” 3w
Roary47 Hmmm. Young and innocent Jan. Jealousy does not become your lack of details. 🤣 3w
ElizaMarie @TheAromaofBooks ah that checks out. 40 and she is 21. Okay. Not great but…. Ugh! That is such a huge power dynamic - age, status 3w
TheAromaofBooks @ElizaMarie - I agree. Like she is an adult and out on her own, but he's definitely going to hold all the cards, especially because it's obvious that she has an uncertain, tentative personality (at this age, anyway). She's going to be so dependent on him for direction and affirmation. 3w
willaful @dabbe Except that Jane has a very strong sense of self and character. 3w
dabbe @willaful Agree 💯. 3w
