The Book of Essie
The Book of Essie: A novel | Meghan MacLean Weir
A debut novel of family, fame, and religion that tells the emotionally stirring, wildly captivating story of the seventeen-year-old daughter of an evangelical preacher, star of the family's hit reality show, and the secret pregnancy that threatens to blow their entire world apart. Esther Ann Hicks--Essie--is the youngest child on Six for Hicks, a reality television phenomenon. She's grown up in the spotlight, both idolized and despised for her family's fire-and-brimstone brand of faith. When Essie's mother, Celia, discovers that Essie is pregnant, she arranges an emergency meeting with the show's producers: Do they sneak Essie out of the country for an abortion? Do they pass the child off as Celia's? Or do they try to arrange a marriage--and a ratings-blockbuster wedding? Meanwhile, Essie is quietly pairing herself up with Roarke Richards, a senior at her school with a secret of his own to protect. As the newly formed couple attempt to sell their fabricated love story to the media--through exclusive interviews with an infamously conservative reporter named Liberty Bell--Essie finds she has questions of her own: What was the real reason for her older sister leaving home? Who can she trust with the truth about her family? And how much is she willing to sacrifice to win her own freedom?

My final audiobook of 2021! This was a compelling listen, but also pretty predictable and straightforward; I wish it would have gone deeper. I loved Essie‘s character and still enjoyed watching how her story played out. 🎧

I‘ve never seen a single episode of the Duggars but I was drawn to this book. Well-written and engaging and satisfying, The Book of Essie draws on fundamentalist headlines from the Duggars to Ruby Ridge to conversion therapy. Essie is the 17 year old, secretly pregnant youngest daughter of a Christian celebrity family—and Essie has a plan to break free, but it‘ll take every trick she‘s learned on her family‘s reality tv show.

I've never been interested in the Duggar family... never watched the show or followed them in the news, but its pretty clear they were the inspiration for this book. It's pretty much taken right from the headlines. That being said, it was well-written and compelling. I can't say I necessarily enjoyed it, because the subject matter was difficult, but I'm glad I read it.

I just finished my final book of the year: The Book of Essie by Meghan MacLean Weir. I was not expecting to finish tonight but I could not put it down, walking away from family festivities to finish ASAP. Interestingly, my first book of the year was Shout by Laurie Halse Anderson, and they would make a great book pairing.

Essie plots her escape from her extremely religious family, who make all of their money through an ongoing TV show.

This novel felt really realistic to me, even though I have no direct experience of such things but based solely on the aforementioned TV shows. Although I guessed Essie‘s terrible ‘secret‘ early on, I was still entranced by the rest of the book. It might even have made my #20bestof2020 but then what would I take out?!

This book sat atop my TBR for nearly two years but sat unread because in the negative sense of the word I‘m uncomfortable around pious behavior. So imagine my surprise when I was intrigued by this book from beginning to end. I hope all the Essies out there find a way to read this book, and I hope it helps them find their muffled voice.

⭐⭐⭐
Drawing some similarities to the now cancelled reality TV show "19 Kids and Counting" (and to the allegations of molestation faced by the family's eldest son), as well as a possible amalgamation of the standoff at Ruby Ridge and the Waco siege, The Book of Essie touched lightly upon many themes, from victim advocacy, teen pregnancy, and conversion counseling, to conservativism, religion, and fame. (Continued ⬇️)

#bookreport @Cinfhen

Librariana (1 of 2) The multiple viewpoints made for a richer, layered story, but it still fell somewhere between an A- and a B+ for me. It was an interesting premise, but felt like it glossed over details that could've been more substantially explored or simply more descriptive. 3y
Librariana (2 of 2) Didn't make nearly as much progress with my other books as I would've liked, but! I did pick up and started listening to 3y
Texreader Excellent review 3y

ljuliel Good review. I‘m wondering if the author intentionally left the story as vague as she did , not wanting to add too many more details ? It immediately reminded me of the tv show , but I think if she would have crossed too many more borders, she could have been looking at a lawsuit. I‘m not saying she shouldn‘t write about anything she wants, but from what I‘ve heard of that family, they don‘t hesitate to get involved in lawsuits. I think theres👇🏼 (edited) 3y
ljuliel ☝🏼more to that family behind the scenes that never showed on the tv shows. I wouldn‘t want to tangle with them. It‘s surprising that no one has written a nonfiction account of them, although they‘re a close- mouthed group amongst themselves and have lots of money. I‘m not sure what the people that know them personally think of them or if any of them would talk. I think there‘s a lot more than just that son....the dad gives me the creeps. 3y
Cinfhen Both your books have peeked my #ReadersRadar !!!!! Thanks for sharing and posting / stacking both!!! And I agree that family is SUPER SKETCHY @ljuliel 3y
Librariana @Texreader - Thank you so much! I just went back and re-read my first sentence and thought to myself "Wow! That was a long one!" ? But it made sense in my head ? 3y
Librariana Oh, @ljuliel, I agree it was probably quite intentional that she was careful not to draw TOO many similarities as I have no doubt that family would've had legal bone to pick with her. From what I read on the dust jacket, the author was "raised in the rectory of her father's church", so I imagine she drew inspiration from that as well. The book was told from three viewpoints - Esther, Liberty, and Roarke. 3y
Librariana @ljuliel - Esther's is the viewpoint that draws the most attention since she's the family's youngest daughter, pregnant, trying to escape her situation, and possibly draw attention to the molestation she experienced. Liberty's is the one that parallels the amalgamation of Ruby Ridge and Waco. Roarke is a closeted young man who plays an important role in Esther's life. The book definitely plays up on what Esther's family is like behind the scenes. 3y
Librariana @ljuliel - As far as what happened with the TV family we're referencing above, I agree that I'm curious and it IS surprising that no one has written about them, especially given their involvement in local politics and conservative groups, not to mention the Ashley Madison controversy. That whole family makes me uneasy! 3y
Librariana @Cinfhen - Aww! I'm glad they've peeked your reader's radar! (I love that hashtag 😁) I'm sorry I didn't add how far along I was in the others, but I'll make sure to in my weekly forecast. I also *may* try to participate in @MrBook's celebration 😊 I'm super late to the party, but I want to at least try. 3y

I listened to the audiobook via Scribd, which was well done. Very much enjoyed this book about the youngest daughter of an evangelical reality-TV-star family that is not all it seems to be. It was especially interesting to read this at the same time as The Testaments by Margaret Atwood, and note similarities and differences. Four stars, would recommend, especially the audiobook.

This book starts with a pregnancy test and has a lot of twists and turns before a very satisfying end! It follows a daughter in a Duggar-like religious family and reminded me why I stopped watching that family years ago. It also made me question watching any kids that grow up on TV (Teen Mom, The Little Couple, all of TLC, etc.) I enjoyed the multiple perspectives. #Recommended 4.5⭐️

This was another audiobook I couldn't get enough of! I listened nonstop. I wish I knew a bit more about the mother and father and their perspectives, but Essie is a strong character with a complex story. There are many layers outside of the main plot, and I would read another book about Roarke or even Caleb. So glad I got this in the 2 for 1 audiobook sale on Audibke last month. Both picks were winners!

A reality tv family hiding a devastating secret. This one had me from the first line - "On the day I turn seventeen, there is a meeting to decide whether I should have the baby or if sneaking me to a clinic for an abortion is worth the PR risk."

Essie decides to take charge of her own life. How she does that makes for a great story.

Anyone read either of these yet?

Behind the author during her presentation. New insights: *I never thought of this book as YA, but it well could be. *I had no idea of the pervasive influence of medicine in the book when I read it. *I didn‘t think the only Litten I‘d see would be @ChrisBohjalian . *How were there audiences full of what looked like only white people?

Nice day to be at #newburyportlitfest !

Pickpick

I completely devoured this, getting sucked in from the very beginning. I didn‘t completely love the ending - I think it would have been stronger without the last 6 or so pages but the rest was fantastic.

Pickpick

This was between a so-so and a pick for me, but strong leaning toward pick. I thoroughly enjoyed Roarke & Essie's story but I found myself a little bored by Liberty's involvement.
