I started this one two months ago, read the first couple chapters and then walked away from it. Not the books fault, I had a lot going on at the time. I feel like it‘s time to dive back in!

I enjoyed book three in this series though it dragged a bit. The shifting relationships between the main characters, especially Vasia and the Bear were very interesting.

howjessreads I‘ve been intrigued by this series! Good to know they‘re good on audio! 2w
Aswenson @howjessreads Yes- very good on audio! I‘m a serial reader of the first book in a series and stopping, but I enjoyed these enough to finish all 3. 😊 2w

Life‘s been crazy, so I‘m behind in reviewing this book, but I absolutely loved it! I loved the whole series, but this one felt more magical than the others. After some unsatisfying endings of other series (lol), this made my heart happy.

I adored the previous two installments of Arden‘s Winternight Trilogy, and was not disappointed by this beautiful yet bittersweet conclusion. Her talent for rooting the fantastic in flesh and earth, for bringing new dimension and maturity to fairytales, without losing their sense of lyrical wonder, is remarkable.

Aswenson Just started book 3 and it is already breaking my heart! 😭 It‘s uncanny how some of our modern political and societal issues are on full display in these stories. 3w

A beautiful end to a great series. Feeling all of the feels over Vasya and her story. I‘m sad that it‘s over.

I was hesitant to start The Winter of the Witch because, honestly, I didn‘t want the series to end. But I couldn‘t wait anymore. And it‘s just as beautiful and heartbreaking and wonderful as I knew it was going to be. 💕

I really like how easy it was for me to get sucked into this series. I had some issues with this one, but I still had fun with it, and I think it‘s a solid conclusion to the series.

So far, having a new puppy in the house means I‘ve been too exhausted to read. I‘m optimistically keeping my book close by, but I seriously don‘t have the energy. It‘s like having a newborn; I try to sleep when she does. 😴💤💤💤

As much as I'm not willing to let go of Vasya, this was a good ending to the trilogy. Everything was wrapped up well and finished off with a beautiful little bow and it was all just.. yes. Vasya for queen.

(Also Ded Grib was the actual best 🍄)

My March reading has gotten off to a slow start. I feel like I'm taking forever to finish books. Partly I've been throwing a lot of energy into writing this month plus the weather is getting nice so I've been spending time outside. But this book took me 2 weeks to finish!! Though maybe on some level I didn't want it to end. I have cherished this series & wasn't ready to let Vasya & her adventures go on without me. Alas. All magic ends, I suppose.

I have been obsessed with this series since it came out. I love that the books debut in winter, as the story is set in medieval Russia and it always seems to fit the weather outside my window. Makes for a very comfy reading session. I love the characters. Arden has a gift with description and I haven't fallen in love with a series like this since Marie Brennan's "Natural History of Dragons" series.

#BookMail Pt8 This is the final book in this trilogy based on Russian folktales. I‘m not even sure my copy of The Bear And The Nightingale matches these 2 but the only other ones were the US “misty forest” cover or the ‘bird on a flower‘ cover. My one is the brightly colored flowers, horse & girl in sweater with the title on a white ‘ribbon‘ running through it. Can anyone tell me if that‘s the matching cover? None of them really match it.

Kalalalatja I think it is, at least it is the same publisher 🤷‍♀️ 3mo

With Rus‘ on the brink of war, Vasya is faced with coming to its aide more than once, forcing her to decide who she will become. I was very impressed with the character development, each having fully come into their own. Arden did well tying up most loose ends to the story, and ultimately I was happy with the ending to this trilogy. Sad to see Vasya go, but I will revisit her.

This book was just magical. It was one of those books that I was putting off a little bit (not too much--it's a library book with holds!) because I was afraid that I wouldn't be able to reimmerse myself in its world. That did NOT happen. (continued in comments)

Unabridged I did a quick review on Book Series Recaps, and then from page 1, I was lost in Arden's writing and story and fantastical Russia again. Vasya is such a compelling protagonist, one who is flawed and who grows. And the secondary characters who fill in her life are just as beautiful. Moving, inspiring, gorgeous novel. 3mo

Not a bad month for reading. Audiobooks were definitely more prevalent this month since I didn't find myself with as much free time as I would have liked to sit down and read. My favorite for the month is a tie between the tagged book and the Jim Henson Biography.

16 Books ➡ 7 books, 3 ebooks, 6 audiobooks
✔ 6 Fiction
✔ 3 Graphic Novels
✔ 3 Young Adult
✔ 4 Nonfiction

Total books read for the year so far ➡ 34

I wept my way through the end of this, the final book in the Winternight Trilogy. I‘ve enjoyed each title in the series more than the last. Russian tales and history! Thank you Ms Arden.

I am just 😍😍😍 over this end to the trilogy!! Honestly I think it‘s the strongest book of the three; the plot was tight and absolutely sucked me in, the prose was as gorgeous as ever, and everything was wrapped up in a satisfying way. Plus, Vasya is now one of my all-time fave fantasy protagonists.

PS - if you had told me I‘d also weep for a nightingale before this series was over I would have laughed but here I was, moved to tears twice 😭

A satisfying conclusion to the series. There was a lot going on which made wrapping everything up in one book tough. Arden did pull it off, though, and while I would have liked to continue exploring the dual worlds Vasya navigated, I'm content with where the story ended.

I'm not one for re-reading, but this series is one I look forward to doing just that, soon.

EmilyM I agree with your review. I am not a re-reader, but I feel like I was a little lost in parts of this book because I couldn‘t remember what happened in the first two books...so I may go back and reread the series at some point. 4mo
taraWritesSci @EmilyM I'm glad that I didn't learn of the series until last year because I was at least able to devour them back-to-back. The gap between two and three though, and the complexity of every name having a specific nickname used interchangeably, whew! 😁 4mo

Father Konstantine wants Vasya to burn at the stake for witchcraft. Mamai and the Tatars are invading Rus. Vasya must save herself and her beloved Russia with the help of allies, and enemies, old and new. With the aid of the chyerti, Sasha, Dmitrii, Marya, Morozko, Medved, Ded Grib, and Solovey she might win it all, or lose everything. Arden delivers an action packed conclusion to this trilogy.

⭐⭐⭐⭐ Katherine Arden does an amazing job blending Russian folklore, historical events, and a world of her design. Vasya is such a good heroine! Flawed, divergent, and feminine in a way that helps her - while she's not outwardly girly, some of her greatest strengths are traits that I find feminine- empathy, courtesy (to the chyerti), love of her family and appreciation of storytelling. Solid end to this trilogy!

Wow, what an epic conclusion to a wonderful series! I loved every word of it, even when it was frustrating or made me cry. I absolutely adore Ms. Arden's style of combining fairytale elements and the heartbreaking reality, the fact that Vasya never gained power without losing smth and that sacrifices must always be made, even in the name of love or of a happy ending. Still it was an incredible read. What a wonderful journey this has been! 🤓
