Blaze
Blaze | Stephen King, Richard Bachman
At 67 and built like a bear, Clay Blaisdell is one big mother, but his capers are strictly small-time until he meets George Rackley. George introduces him to a hundred cons and the one big score that every small timer dreams of: kidnap. The Gerards are filthy rich, and their child, the last twig on the family tree, could be worth millions. And after all a baby cant ID you, so you can return it alive. Theres only one problem: when the time comes for the deal to go down, George, the brains of the partnership, has died. Or has he? Now Blaze is running into the teeth of a howling storm and the cops are closing in. Hes got a baby as a hostage, and the Crime of the Century just turned into a race against time in the white hell of the Maine woods. Lost for years amongst Stephen Kings papers, and published for the first time ever in 2007, Blaze is a heartstopping thriller reminiscent of Steinbecks Of Mice and Men with the power of a noir fable.

“Master storyteller Stephen King (writing as Richard Bachman) presents this gripping and remarkable New York Times bestselling crime novel about a damaged young man who embarks on an ill-advised kidnapping plot—a work as taut and riveting as anything he has ever written.”

This was a surprise favorite in my readthrough. Though taking obvious inspiration from Of Mice and Men, Blaze tells its own unique story, one that captivates from start to finish. This is largely accomplished by way of its titular protagonist; his naive personality and cognitive deficits soften the blow of some of his more despicable acts, and his backstory, revealed piecemeal throughout, cannot help but inspire empathy for its hapless owner. 5/5

🎧 I was on the edge of my seat. Poor Blaze. At least some people were nice to him. Good story & narration! Not scary but sad.

BarkingMadRead I enjoyed this one. It‘s not typical King for sure, but it kept me interested the whole time, and I was so sad that it ended the way it did! 2y
Erinsuereads I loved this one too!!! At first it was kind of meh but it really crept up on me. I was rooting for blaze by the end in a weird way. I enjoyed that it had a somewhat simpler plot too, it made his character writing shine. 2y
NikkiM5 Today was a travel day, so sorry for the late post. Blaze was excellent, I was into it right from start. I loved how the MC became attached to the baby; it caused some teary eye moments🥹. I always love MC and side character backstories, and as usual, King did not disappoint. 2y
NikkiM5 @ErinSueMreads I was rooting for him too lol. I didn‘t want his story to end the way it did but it became obvious it was going to end that way. 2y
BarkingMadRead @NikkiM5 @ErinSueMreads is it sad that I wished he got away with the baby? 🤣🤣🤣 2y
Addison_Reads @BarkingMadRun I knew it wasn't going to happen but I also wanted him to be able to get away with the baby. The connection King wrote between them made me at times forget that the baby didn't belong with him. I loved that about this book how I felt attached to the "bad" guy. 2y
Erinsuereads I loved that the bad guy really wasn't even that bad of a guy 😂 @Addison_Reads 2y
Erinsuereads @NikkiM5 & @BarkingMadRun I totally was thinking the same thing 😂😂😂 I'm like there is no way this kid would survive but I totally want him to keep him 2y

So the best part of this little mini vacation was that o was able to listen/read this book (80/20) but wow what a wild ride! Another book marked #BookSpinBingo and one for my #TBRCrewBingo (many jobs were done -I‘m saying this counts)

So I am going on a weekend road trip (just 2 days) but I will be driving about 6 hours those two days. I don't have a current audiobook to listen to for the drive (Audible doesn't sync to my car right). So I found Blaze on Hoopla. I have the physical book too. So I am probably gonna switch between the two.

Celebrating being done school for the week with some tea and a book! Doing my Masters online was definitely not what I expected to be doing (thanks pandemic), but it‘s not too terrible if I remind myself I don‘t have to be working all day, every day 📚

Jessiglenn83 I absolutely love this book with all my heart. It is just so bazaar and wild and heartbreakingly sweet and sad and so much else. I was so glad I decided to go ahead and read it even though no one I knew had read it and it seemed pretty obscure. It was beautiful. 4y
m-o-o-n-that-spells @Jessiglenn83 I couldn't agree more! I almost didn't read this one because nobody seemed to know it, but I was pleasantly surprised. I ended up loving it! 4y

🎧 I had no idea what to expect. It‘s a short book. The dialog is very King-like. It was a story about Blaze, the horrible tings that happened to him and the horrible things he did to others. His partner in crime is a seasoned criminal who thinks he‘s got it made when they meet & when he is killed Blaze takes on a life of crime without him or does he ... ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I didn‘t find the back story quite as interesting as the current-day kidnapping. I found Blaze more interesting as he was younger and a teen, with his best friend, Johnny, more interesting, but it was less so once Blaze met George (at least for me). The end of the story was really good, though, and had me eagerly turning pages to find out how things would end. Waffling between 3.5 and 4 stars (good and really good), I averaged it out.

Not spooky, just a story about a low-IQ criminal. Roughly based on Of Mice And Men. Interesting that the baby in the story is named Joe!

I'm read this in conjuction with Of Mice and Men. I can't say I loved this one, it was ok. I don't know if it was too close to having red Of Mice and Men or what I didn't like about it.

Finished my last book of 2017! 🍾 This is a really good Bachman-King story. It‘s the final Bachman installment. Even though Blaze makes some really poor decisions, I couldn‘t help but to feel sorry for him. I just want to take him under my wing and protect him. HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!! 🍾🎊

As usual, I always enjoy King books! This one was a little different than his other books. It took 30 years from when he wrote it before it was published! There are some similarities to Of Mice and Men and my heart broke for the main character throughout. Looks like Penny enjoyed it also! 😻
