Gerald's Game
Gerald's Game | Stephen King
When a game of seduction between a husband and wife ends in death, the nightmare has only just begun in this sinister twist on a bedtime storya #1 national bestseller and one of Stephen Kings best (USA TODAY).Gerald and Jessie Burlingame have gone to their summer home on a warm weekday in October for a romantic getaway. After being handcuffed to her bedposts, Jessie tires of her husband's games, but when Gerald refuses to stop, the evening ends with deadly consequences. Still handcuffed, Jessie is trapped and alone. Over the next twenty-eight hours, in the lakeside house that has become a prison, Jessie will come face-to-face with all the things she has ever feared. Her only company is a hungry, stray dog and the various voices that fill her mind. As night comes, she is unsure whether it is her imagination or if she has another companion: someone watching her from the corner of her dark bedroom. A master of his craft, Stephen Kings novels haunt in many different ways. Geralds Game kept us up half the night, we couldnt put it down (Newsweek).

This was excellent. I loved Jessie‘s character development! The one scene (if you know, you know) was a bit physically painful to read and made my hand itch 😱

Trying to get one Stephen King in a month. Not sure I can pull it off all year though. What are his best books?

RvnclawWhovian I feel like a broken record lol but if you haven‘t read 11/22/63, you must ASAP. It‘s a bit of a chunker but I ended up wishing it would never end 6mo
C.Perone I agree with @RvnclawWhovian 11/22/63 was really good. I also loved Tommyknockers, The Outsider, The Dark Tower series, The Bazaar of Bad Dreams to name a few 6mo
Amberdfoy Ok thanks! I‘ve read The Outsider and the Bill Hodges trilogy. I recently got The Shining just because I want to read the one about the son. I haven‘t read Stephen King in 10+ years so I‘ve only read the really popular, not so long ones when I was a teenager. 6mo

I wanted to read this because it is loosely tied to Dolores Claiborne. Jessie and her husband head to a secluded cabin for adult fun. Things don‘t go as planned and Jessie ends up handcuffed to the bed and alone. Her time is spent between flashbacks and conversations with the voices in her head. Her determination and will are remarkable. Her situation is terrifying. This one has plenty of triggers.

Prairiegirl_reading I remember this book from when it first came out. I couldn‘t put it down. I kept thinking how is a story about a woman handcuffed to a bed so compelling!!?? 6mo
Victoriahoperose I watched this movie without knowing anything about it and it still gives me nightmares 6mo
JoScho @Prairiegirl_reading I thought the same thing when I was a few chapters in with hours to go but King has his way! 6mo

The last quarter of the book may seem a bit thin and shaky, but it's effectively buoyed by this survival story's simple and isolating suspense, intimate point of view, and love for its central star character.

Decided to listen on Audible today as I worked on projects. Thought I picked a no-brainer. Hooked right away but ... is it bad to say the beloved Stephen King could have MAYBE made this a bit shorter? Over 5 hours in & over 8 more to go. Not much of a build up so far for me but with all of the #metoo & post #50shades I expected something >unique. I know. I am evil & certainly no Mr. King. Will press on but I must really be jaded. Should've listened Gerald...
A buried childhood trauma resurfaces when Jessie finds herself cuffed, and she fights back, repulsed.
The quote is from Mike Flanagan's terrific adaptation, but it encompasses pages of backstory in a single line.
Carla Gugino's performance was absolutely stellar.

Cinfhen Ooooooh; that‘s a very telling line❣️❣️❣️ seems like it‘s about to get real.... 2y
rohit-sawant @batsy @Cinfhen It gets both real & unreal very quickly! It's perhaps SK's most feminist novel. He's paced it so brilliantly, switching between the present & flashbacks, which basically function as enforced-survival-oriented therapy & further the story. Hope you check it out! It's thoughtful, suspenseful, & of course, scary, in more than one way, but ultimately optimistic. Sorry, I can't help but put on my salesman hat whenever I talk about it 😆 2y

A lot of #nasty in this novel. I also marked it down for another prompt for #FierceFeb. A nasty game leads to a nasty end for Gerald, leaving Jessie in a nasty situation... and in company of a nasty visitor. But she works her way through the trauma and badasses her way through it all. One of my favorite female characters in not just SK's works but overall.

When your main & really only character is handcuffed to the bed for most of the novel, with only a mangy stray dog, the voices in her head, & the ominous Space Cowboy lurking in the corner as her only companions, strong characterization is needed. Jessie was a great character, with a fully fleshed out backstory, & I was captivated by her struggle to survive. The audiobook had creepy music that I was not expecting but added to the atmosphere.

This was one of those horror stories that was like a train wreck you just can‘t pry your eyes away from, and I mean that in a good way. First off early on A LOT is happening that leaves you wondering with so much left in the book how much more can realistically happen, but that‘s where the magic (at least for me) truly begins in this book. I admit to finding the final twist/conclusion a tad bit unnecessary albeit a nice hat tip to Ed Gein 👍🏼

When your main character, your only character for the most part, is shackled to bedposts, it automatically puts you in her corner & creates suspense. But what SK delivers is so much more. In exploring Jessie's grim quest for survival, he tempers the tension with rich characterization & delves into her backstory, which isn't a filler to balance the pacing & meaningfully ties into her predicament, training light on themes like abuse, manipulation,👇

rohit-sawant victim shaming, society's, rather men's, gendered view of women, & how instead of buckling under the pressure of her past, & present, Jessie emerges into the light. What I hadn't expected was the book to be so spooky in places. And not the "fun" kinda spooky either, but the type that leaves you peering into the dark a bit longer. I loved that he also addressed the aftermath, and the hopeful note the story ended on was satisfying and much needed. 2y
MrBook Wow! Great review!!! 2y
