In the background, you can see paint swatches that have been on the wall for a month and a vacuum I brought out 3 hours ago but haven‘t turned on. What you can‘t see, and why I‘ve been quiet, is that my mental health was starting to decline. But instead of ignoring it and expecting it to fix itself like last time, I decided to be proactive. Part of that was a social media break. But I‘m happy to be back with my Litsy fam and feeling better💜

sprainedbrain I‘m so glad you are feeling better! 🤗 3d

Few things can get me out of bed at 5 am on a Saturday. A good, long hike with great friends is one of those things. Skookum Flats were beautiful this morning! And we followed it by devouring Mexican food 😂🤤 If you live somewhere where, like us in the PNW, you are experiencing unseasonably beautiful weather, I hope you get out there and take advantage of it. Happy Saturday Littens!!

The Rules of Magic | Alice Hoffman

Pickpick

Three siblings are beginning to discover their magic that their mother has tried so hard to protect them from. Their journey is imperfect and not easy, which is one of the things I really enjoyed. I absolutely loved this book, so much so that I read it in one day. Alice Hoffman had me emotionally invested in these characters to the point that the ending made me ugly cry. They‘re flawed in different ways that all impact their lives and outcomes🌻🖤

Good Omens | Neil Gaiman, Terry Pratchett

Pickpick

Good Omens is an immensely enjoyable story about two unlikely friends. An angel and a demon, two beings who would ordinarily be foes, find themselves teaming up to find the antichrist they‘ve most unfortunately misplaced. All the while in the hopes that maybe they can save this Earth they‘ve grown to love from its impending doom. Full of wit and relevant social commentary, it was a joy to read from start to finish

GingerAntics I was shocked how relevant it still was today, even though it was written in the early 1990s. This book is great. 4w
RvnclawWhovian @GingerAntics totally! I had to remind myself a couple times while reading this that it was written almost 30 years ago 4w
GingerAntics Same here. That‘s the sign of a good book, though. Love this book. I need to reread it before the series drops. I may have over committed on other buddy reads, though. 4w

Been wanting to sit down and read all day instead of work and *poof* the power goes out! Oh darn, I guess I have no choice now 😜 I probably should do reviews for the three books I‘ve finished since my last review, but I want to get in as much reading as I can before the #Owlsreadathon2019 ends

HotTeaGoodBooks Is that author‘s name a play on the word library? 1mo
RvnclawWhovian @Denita so I did some googling and it sorta is! Her real first name is Martha. But apparently people called her by her middle name, Elizabeth, which turned into Libba. From her bio on her webpage, “For those who keep asking, yes, Libba Bray is my real name, and yes, I realize that it sounds a lot like “Library,” which I think is pretty cool.” 1mo
HotTeaGoodBooks That is so cool! Even more so with her being an author. Very nice. 4w

Lost Boy | Christina Henry
post image
Pickpick

This one is between a pick and a so-so for me. Essentially the origin story of Captain Hook that you‘ve never heard and Peter Pan portrayed in a way you‘ve never seen. While I didn‘t find it quite as horrific as others (not sure what that says about me lol) and the writing was simplistic at times, I found myself caring about the characters and eager to find out how Captain Hook went from Peter‘s original lost boy to his sworn enemy for eternity

BookwormAHN I felt parts of the story were rather rushed and would have liked to have heard more about Jamie becoming a pirate. 2mo
RvnclawWhovian @BookwormAHN totally agree. How did he gain the pirate‘s trust after what Peter did and become their leader? 2mo
HotTeaGoodBooks I can‘t get past Stars (Wendy Darling #1) by Colleen Oakes enough to read another book with Pan in it. She turned him into such a textbook classic abuser when she really could have used the platform to empower her female lead. But I digress. That book left me with quite a soapbox, lol. Maybe I can get past it enough to give the characters another chance at some point. 2mo
RvnclawWhovian @Denita yea Pan isn‘t portrayed well in this one either. You could make the argument that at best, he‘s manipulative and at worst he‘s mentally abusive. I didn‘t find it too disturbing to continue reading but personally I‘m able to read a lot of “disturbing” stuff without feeling too affected so maybe read with caution if you‘re easily triggered by reading stuff like that 2mo

I could really sum this up in two words: Mind. Blown. What surprised me the most is that while this is a mind bending sci-fi thriller, at it‘s core it‘s truly a love story and what a man is willing to do for those he loves. The world Blake Crouch created was, well to be blunt, a bit of a mind f**k. But in the best way possible. Don‘t ponder the reality of that world too much because your head might actually explode. Truly didn‘t want this to end

Once Upon A River was truly unique, like nothing I‘ve ever read before. What starts out as a mystery man and girl showing up at an inn called The Swan along the Thames weaves itself into several, seemingly unrelated characters who all become intertwined. One mystery girl, three people claiming her. But who does she really belong to? Masterful storytelling with elements of magic and the unknown mixed in, it piques your interest until the very end

While technically a reread, I read this so long ago I forgot most of it. Libba Bray weaves a beautiful, enchanting story of a girl named Gemma who discovers a magical world she never dreamed existed. But not all is as it seems in this fantasy world as she unravels a mysterious cover story to help her understand her destiny. While this is an easy YA read, there‘s a surprising amount of depth as Gemma discovers we all have light and darkness in us

“The soil of a man's heart is stonier, Louis. A man grows what he can, and he tends it. 'Cause what you buy, is what you own. And what you own... always comes home to you.” Knowing this was the book that King considers the most frightening he‘s written, I was excited to read this. Pet Semetary is much more than what meets the eye. Folklore, resurrection, Indian legends and, at the center of it all, what a man is willing to do for his family

Happy Sunday Littens! This is what my past few days have mostly looked like: tea, soup, meds, Netflix, many naps and cuddling with my fur kids. Not a whole lot of reading unfortunately. But today is the first day I‘m starting to feel like myself again. Now if only I could breathe through my nose lol

Literally overnight I developed flu-like symptoms. I feel awful but I dragged my butt to the urgent care walk-in clinic to get some answers and, hopefully, some meds. I finished Pet Sematary last night (review forthcoming after I sleep my way through this flu) and between that and the Brilliance trilogy, I felt like this YA fantasy fiction was a good next choice. Hope everyone else‘s Wednesday isn‘t being spent in urgent care with a mask on 😷

Taking full advantage of this gorgeous, sunny weather before the rain returns to the PNW. Maybe it‘s the California in me, but I truly am a different person when it‘s sunny and warm 😂 #Dogsoflitsy

Scochrane26 I want to visit PNW so much. 2mo
RvnclawWhovian @Scochrane26 you should! It really is beautiful despite the rain 2mo
Scochrane26 Think I‘m going to Arizona this summer & will do some smaller trips. Hoping next summer—I really want to see crater lake & the redwoods. I‘ve never been out west, so there‘s so many places to choose from. 2mo

1)I like cooking & baking, hiking, working out, wine tasting, the occasional gaming
2)Pretty much anything except graphic novels, just can‘t get into them
3)Delilah the calico and Rose the rescued mutt
4)Yup!
5)mugs, candles, anything Harry Potter (proud Ravenclaw) and Dr Who
6)I also love mermaids, elephants, sloths, chocolate, coffee, wine and anything boho

It‘s a common enough phrase to be a total coincidence, but still I found it funny that a phrase Stephen King put in his book in 1978 ended being an iconic line in the movie adaptation of “The Shining” in 1980. Too bad King hates that movie 😬

Emj_reads King quotes himself a lot! All of his novels are linked in small (and major!) ways. One of the joys of reading his work is finding all of the connections. 2mo

Pickpick

A thrilling end to this suspenseful trilogy. I put off reading this series because the description didn‘t immediately grab me. Boy, was I wrong in the best way. Every book lead to a heart pounding conclusion that made me feel like I couldn‘t read fast enough. More than a few unintentional late nights were had because I couldn‘t wait to find out what happened next. Suspenseful, thrilling, action packed, all while having relevant social commentary.

RvnclawWhovian @Boooooks I did! It was okay, I didn‘t like some of the changes they made. But then again, I‘m never completely satisfied with book to movie/tv show. What‘s your favorite King book? 2mo
Boooooks @RvnclawWhovian well I‘ve only read 8 of his books so far but from what I‘ve read It has gotta be my fav I just loved the kids friendships so much. 2mo

Well, you would think I‘d know by now to never dive into the final book of a series before bed. But guess what I did anyway? Got about a quarter of the way into the final book in the Brilliance series before I forced myself to go to bed...and then restlessly dreamt about it. Needless to say, this is my second cup of tea. On the plus side, we‘ve got some really nice weather in the forecast this week in western WA 😍🌞Happy Monday Littens!!

Pickpick

Nothing is ever quite as good as when you step into a new world for the first time. Still, the second book in this dystopian trilogy does not disappoint. Former agent Nick Cooper is relishing in the better world he created for his family through his actions in the previous book. That is until he realizes he‘s been played and now America is on the brink of civil war, except this time with technology instead of bayonets. (Continued below)

RvnclawWhovian At the center of it all is a scientist who‘s discovery has the potential to alter life as they know it forever. Dr Couzen may hold the key to bringing peace to a rioting America. With multiple parties with different interests and intents after him, he goes on the run while America burns. Can Nick Cooper find him in time? Just as heart pounding as the first, I can‘t wait to see how it ends in the third (edited) 3mo
