Duma Key
Duma Key: A Novel | Stephen King
No more than a dark pencil line on a blank page. A horizon line, maybe. But also a slot for blackness to pour through...A terrible construction site accident takes Edgar Freemantle's right arm and scrambles his memory and his mind, leaving him with little but rage as he begins the ordeal of rehabilitation. A marriage that produced two lovely daughters suddenly ends, and Edgar begins to wish he hadn't survived the injuries that could have killed him. He wants out. His psychologist, Dr. Kamen, suggests a "geographic cure," a new life distant from the Twin Cities and the building business Edgar grew from scratch. And Kamen suggests something else. ""Edgar, does anything make you happy?" "I used to sketch.""Take it up again. You need hedges...hedges against the night.""Edgar leaves Minnesota for a rented house on Duma Key, a stunningly beautiful, eerily undeveloped splinter of the Florida coast. The sun setting into the Gulf of Mexico and the tidal rattling of shells on the beach call out to him, and Edgar draws. A visit from Ilse, the daughter he dotes on, starts his movement out of solitude. He meets a kindred spirit in Wireman, a man reluctant to reveal his own wounds, and then Elizabeth Eastlake, a sick old woman whose roots are tangled deep in Duma Key. Now Edgar paints, sometimes feverishly, his exploding talent both a wonder and a weapon. Many of his paintings have a power that cannot be controlled. When Elizabeth's past unfolds and the ghosts of her childhood begin to appear, the damage of which they are capable is truly devastating. The tenacity of love, the perils of creativity, the mysteries of memory and the nature of the supernatural -- Stephen King gives us a novel as fascinating as it is gripping and terrifying.

When I looked at @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks feed today it reminded me I had this pic I‘ve never shared. This was a family #vacation I took last year to Gulf Shores, Alabama. Our room had a screened porch with a peek of the ocean. It was a lovely reading spot, especially when it rained. I read Duma Key which was one of my favorite books of 2018.

I really liked this book, it's one I've never heard of before by Stephen King, so I didn't know what to expect. The introduction to Edgar was great, you really got a feel for what he was going through. The book was very creepy, but the biggest strength in this book was definitely the friendship between Edgar and Wireman.

trioxin_sematary @River_Voice you should definitely read The Stand next! 😃 10mo
trioxin_sematary @GrilledCheeseSamurai I never put The Dark Tower on this list because it's in a category of awesomeness all by itself, and it's a series, I can't pick a favourite instalment from from it; if I HAD to though it would be The Waste Lands! 😃 #oy 10mo

After a life crisis Edgar Fremantle moves to Florida to get his life back in order, but this story was written by Stephen King. I read most of this book while visiting the Gulf of Mexico & loved reading King‘s descriptions of it while being there. This is now a favorite King book for me.

This book hit so close to home it was scary. However, it was one of those reads that helped me actually see that my life isn't really all that bad.

Reason why it hit home is cause I'm an artist and I just recently broke my right elbow,(it's the 1 I draw with), and well art is my life. King did a good job, it's not his greatest but it allowed to help out ppl going thro physical disabilities which is amazing!
Overall good read! :)

I‘ve been trying to figure out what to say that doesn‘t give anything away. This may be my new favorite King novel. King does an incredible job of creating an atmosphere of underlying menace so your heart is racing with anticipation even when nothing is happening. There are some truly terrifying moments and some brutally heartbreaking ones as well. Duma Key is well worth your time and the audiobook is well narrated.

Man, the last 30% of this was crazy! It‘s been a long time since I‘ve read one of King‘s #chunksters. I loved the artistic aspect, in fact felt pretty inspired to create some art while reading. (I haven‘t yet... and I‘ll avoid sunsets and ship scenes...)

This was recommended by a friend, and I‘m glad I listened.

Can anyone tell me without ruining the book, if the beginning of this is based on King‘s accident? Like how close did it match what actually happened to him mentally and physically ? I know his injuries weren‘t exactly like this guy‘s.

Only tell me if it won‘t ruin the book. Just say no comment if it‘ll somehow mess up the story.

Thank you.

SqueakyChu The injuries were not the same, but I think King totally wrote this character with the painful physical and psychological scars of his own accident. For me, that is what brought this novel to life. 1y
Aloisi_tribe King says that this book is his most autobiographical. The injuries aren‘t the same but the way he writes about the after effects, the pain, the painkillers is totally from what he went through recovering from his accident. 1y
Kaye Thanks ,guys. I was thinking it might follow closely to what he was feeling. I was wondering about the brain injury part, if he dealt with that ? Miracle he is ok today if that‘s the case. Ok, off to read some more. See ya. 1y

I wasn‘t expecting to finish this but I couldn‘t put it down. My first Stephen King and I loved it! I thought his books were all about scares. Pickpick

While not one of my favorite of King's books, I still largely enjoyed it. He rarely fails to make me deeply care for his characters. I will especially miss Elizabeth and Wireman.

Someone is nearly as happy as I am that I decided to take a reading break from today's long list of chores. #catsoflitsy

"There is no tyrant as merciless as pain, no despot so cruel as confusion." As I'm sure many others who live with chronic illness will agree, there is definitely some truth in that quote. #readmyowndamnbooks

In our adventures today in Fairhope, AL, @Gayan and I went to Page & Pallet but found a used bookstore along the way. This makes my heart happy!

Uh oh. I just discovered Thrift Books. Free shipping on orders of $10 or more in the US. Could be dangerous.

TheBookAddict 👀😳 oh my...very dangerous! 2y
