The Book of Lost Hours | Hayley Gelfuso
post image

What happens to memories? We have memories. Memories that we accumulate throughout our lives. What happens to them once we are no longer here? Once we pass on to wherever it is we go too. This book tells a story of what may happen to them. A beautiful, touching, loving, story.

This one will be in my top 10 for the year.

This has Before The Coffee Gets Cold vibes, and I was finding it mildly enjoyable, and then the third of the three chapters came along and hit me in the feels.

So much candy from my youth: dum dum, bazooka bubble gum, lifesavers, M&Ms, milk duds. Andres mints: nostalgia, my mom was an elegant entertainer. Andres mints were always available in a fancy dish. She shared one each with us.❤️

dabbe Andres Mints are the best! That shiny green foil. #memories Thanks for playing and sharing. 🧡💜💛 4w

Librarybelle I do! My dad was trying to convince me my mom wants them for her birthday on Sunday (he secretly wants them; my mom likes my cranberry muffins a bit more). 😂 @TheBookHippie @dabbe 4w

dabbe @Librarybelle Ooh, is there an easy recipe for that? 4w
Librarybelle @dabbe There is! If I ever get around to sending you the long overdue letter I owe you, I‘ll send you a copy! 🙄 I also make modifications to it, so I‘ll include those. They do take a long time to make, as the dough needs to chill in the fridge for at least an hour, but my family goes crazy over them. 4w
dabbe @Librarybelle I can't wait! 💚🤎💚 4w

I‘m always intrigued when both eras in a dual timeline (1940sTo65, and 1965) story are in the past. This is a really good, albeit somewhat complicated, debut centering on the mythical Timespace where the memories of all who‘ve lived are contained in volumes. A few Timekeepers (white men, mostly) have the ability to erase from existence any memory interfering with the history they chose to create. …Hmmm, imagine - rewriting history😖

Itchyfeetreader A frightening but intriguing premise 4w

I did not like The Ministry of Time or The Midnight Library (the most advertised read alikes), so my hopes were lower than a final-round limbo pole, but darn it, this is great! It‘s all of the things I wanted from the other two, and the twists are fun, albeit predictable. The ending could be less cutesy, but 10/10 otherwise.

After death comes for each character, they have the opportunity to portray their lives in photos, one from each year of life. The reader accompanies them for a revisit to a day that changed their lives. There is no morality check or judgement. These characters become dear by sharing their fears and joys. This book manages to be warm and comforting even as it focuses on endings.
