The Colorado Kid | Stephen King
55 posts | 99 read | 46 to read
On an island off the coast of Maine, a man is found dead. There's no identification on the body. Only the dogged work of a pair of local newspapermen and a graduate student in forensics turns up any clues. But that's just the beginning of the mystery. Because the more they learn about the man and the baffling circumstances of his death, the less they understand. Was it an impossible crime? Or something stranger still...? No one but Stephen King could tell this story about the darkness at the heart of the unknown and our compulsion to investigate the unexplained. With echoes of Dashiell Hammett's The Maltese Falcon and the work of Graham Greene, one of the world's great storytellers presents a surprising tale that explores the nature of mystery itself...

A dead man is found on a beach in Maine by two high school students 25 years ago. The mystery of the Colorado Kid is told by two older men who run the local newspaper to their young apprentice. I was pleasantly surprised to have enjoyed this one. It‘s not just about the story of the Colorado Kid; it‘s about a place in Maine, the relationships between the newspaper people, and the reality of mysteries. #MountTBR

Of the 3 books King wrote for the Hard Case Crime series, this is by far the weakest. Liked the Maine setting & main characters, but this has the feel of a short story s t r e t c h e d into a novella. I was also annoyed by the older men referring to the younger intern as "dear" & "darlin'". Skip this & read Later or Joyland, King's other Hard Case Crime books. #fiction #mystery

⭐️⭐️⭐️ Two old timers from a small weekly newspaper kick around a 25-year-old cold case with their forensics intern - a young female with *gasp* breasts. 🙄 This drab conversation is the entire story. We hear all the progress and speculation on The Colorado Kid‘s mysterious death, which is interesting, but some might find the ending unsatisfying. I thought it worked fine. Bonus star awarded for that fab cover! #coverlove

While I appreciate what King did with this book, I can't say I personally liked it.
This is great storytelling, but what else can you expect of King. But there's a little to much left to the imagination for my taste, and while I realise that it is the whole point of the book. I can't say I'm a fan.

Reagan The actual case of the Somerton Man is so fascinating, this just did not do it for me, and I‘m a die hard King fan 🤷🏼‍♀️ 13mo

Another Stephen King in the books. This was an ok read for me, while the description appealed to me, I was left wanting more hard boiled mystery than what it was. I did enjoy the narration immensely though. #AuthorAMonth

I love these Hard Case Crime editions. Having said that, Joyland was a struggle. Some fine writing but ‘slow burn‘ doesn‘t tell the half of it. By contrast, The Colorado Kid was a great read: beautifully paced and ample testament to King as a writer of versatility and charm. It‘s brilliant that he remains so prolific and I‘m looking forward to starting on The Institute next. I‘ve heard good things.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story, I was okay with a mystery within the story that didn't have a wrapped up ending. The overall story had an ending with one of the main characters being asked to stay. It was an easy light read and I enjoyed the interactions with all the characters. This is a great Stephan King and I am glad it was my first.

Not your typical Stephan King novel except for the exceptional writing and storytelling.
In 1980 a body is found on the beach of small Maine Island. The man has no ID and nobody knows him. So where is he from and how did he get there, but most importantly how did he die?
2005 an intern at the newspaper on that small Maine island hears the story of ‘The Colorado Kid‘ from the 2 old timer news men that were there.
Excellent short read. 👍🏼

3rd book in O.W.L.s HP Magical Readathon-career=Metal Charmer-class-Defense Against Dark Arts-prompt-Grindylows=book set at the sea/coast. I have mix opinion b/c I liked the characters and their dynamic but not the end.I remembered a short story from Hemingway in that style, a conversation in one day about an event and you can know the characters. I liked that style. But the end of the mystery is inconclusive, open. It was from ok to so-so 3.3⭐️

DGRachel The book may have disappointed, but that cover is amazing. 🤣🤣🤣 2y
Gissy @DGRachel Yes! It is! It was mainly a cover buy. I'm just new in this Stephen King book world. 2y

1 unread book recieved in a subscription box
1 unread book from my owned TBR
1 audiobook
1 new release
1 unread ebook

Well now I decided to add 1 work by Stephen King because I really need to finish my back log of books of his I have yet to read. Starting September off with this one.

This book has mixed reviews but I quite enjoyed it. Stephen King is a great writer as always, and I found this story intriguing and not predictable. The cover was unfortunately very misleading, as I was hoping for some 1950s noir-esque type of story, but instead we get a mystery with no solution. Some might hate it but I think it‘s worth reading, and can be read in a couple of hours. 4⭐️

I picked up this book in response to my love of the series Haven on Netflix (and all things Stephen King). But the book was merely a seed to grow a new story.

However, I loved the book for what it is - an atypical mystery. King himself said that people will either love it or hate it. Why? It‘s a reflection on story and storytelling. To that end, there is no answer given to the mystery. The fun is in the story, not the answer.

📷: Google Books

laurenlovesliterature I keep seeing this at the thrift store...but I keep padding it up. Should I get it??? 4y
LiterRohde @laurenlovesliterature If, like me, you are OK with not getting any answers, then yes. The fun of this book is enjoying the story of a mystery that raises questions but has no answers. I believe that‘s why King said there is no middle ground for most - they either love it or hate it. Also, it has no supernatural elements. It‘s all mystery. And it is a quick read. (edited) 4y

H is for Hard Case Crime.
A few years ago I had the joy of coming across a new King book, quietly released,in paperback only, sold in drugstores, and I remembered what it was like being a kid in a ... well, a bookstore. Not only did I get a King book out of it, but it led to rediscovering my love of pulp fiction. He followed up with another standalone treat, Joyland, & it was just as fun.
If you‘ve missed these, fix that.

@GarthRanzz

Sweettartlaura PS - if you like this genre, don‘t overlook 4y
GarthRanzz These were great books! I loved the pulp noire feel to them. Joyland was my favourite of the two. I need to look into some of the other Hard Case books. Like the ones Michael Crichton wrote. 4y
Sweettartlaura @GarthRanzz I wound up with a monthly subscription to Hard Case Crime because of The Colorado Kid - they shipped 2 books a month for less than $10. I wound up giving it up cos they were just piling up. But I often wonder if they still do that. 4y
See All 18 Comments
GarthRanzz That might be worth looking in to. Definitely cheaper than Barnes and Noble! 4y
Sweettartlaura @GarthRanzz it was real old-school, too - like, they sent an envelope for you to mail your check in... and this was around 2008/2010 - online payments/debit/credit cards/all that were well established. Made me wonder if it was run by an old guy chomping on a cigar, telling his spinster secretary Maude to hold his calls, in a run-down factory near the river, in some part of town the developers forgot. 4y
GarthRanzz LOL that‘s a hell of an image. Befitting the series. But it looks like they sold out. Changed publishers and it doesn‘t look like the new one kept the club. 4y
Sweettartlaura @GarthRanzz Aww, man... no more Hard Case Crime? Well, if it was up to Maude & that new kid Cliff in Accounting to keep track of those checks, I guess it‘s no surprise 😕 4y
ShookBelf @Sweettartlaura @GarthRanzz The best comment thread I've read in a while! 4y
Sweettartlaura @ShookBelf 👍🏻 I aim to please 😏 4y
GarthRanzz I‘m thinking Cliff and Maude embezzled the money and started a new publishing house called a Titan. They picked up the Hard Case series for a song and changed how you buy them. Online through a bigger crook; Amazon. 4y
Sweettartlaura @GarthRanzz Yes... because Cliff is secretly Maude‘s son by... of course, the boss-man. He threw some money at her, told her to take care of it. They‘ve been plotting their revenge ever since. 4y
Bookladylinda @GarthRanzz Amazon = online crook! 👍🏾 4y
vivastory @Sweettartlaura @GarthRanzz This thread is killing me 😂😂 Now I have an overwhelming urge to read a noir 4y
Sweettartlaura @Bookladylinda @vivastory Thanks for enjoying! And yes, @vivastory go get you some noir - it‘s always fun ❤️ 4y
vivastory I was actually thinking of starting Chandler's The Big Sleep today. I'm taking this as a sign. I will also definitely check out Colorado Kid & Joyland. 4y
Sweettartlaura @vivastory I JUST listened to The Big Sleep - it was great! Scroll through my feed - pretty sure I reviewed it. And yes to Colorado Kid. Joyland isn‘t so much noir, but it is classic pulp. And for real, check out Queenpin by Megan Abbott - I loved it. She has another one in this vein, but I haven‘t gotten to it yet. Enjoy! 4y
vivastory I have Queenpin in my car. I might read that one. I love her work. 4y

So, I am a Stephen King fanatic. Love him, love everything by him, until this book. I think part of my problem was the similarities to the case of the Somerton man, an unsolved murder from Australia. That story is so creepy and true, that nothing can compare. Read about that case instead of this book. I guess there had to be one book that I didn‘t like. Above is a photo of the real Somerton man! Scary!

DarcysMom I had to find out more - this Smithsonian article seems like a good summary of the case. https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/the-body-on-somerton-beach-50795611/ 4y

I adored this book. I recently finished the TV show Haven (which is loosely based off this book) & wanted to see how the book tied in & neither disappointed. I think the reason I loved it so much is the fact of the unknown. And how even with an ending like the book had, finishing it didn‘t make me want to throw it across the room. It was almost better not to know than to piece all of the facts together & get a disappointing reason why he died.

Not particularly a great piece of work, but a well thought out look at the nature of stories. The book itself recounts the story of The Colorado Kid whilst continually reiterating why it is NOT a news story. Although well written it feels like it would have worked better as a short story in a collection.

Here are my most recent read King books! I started The Dark Tower last June and finished in January! The other two I read within the last month. Loved them all! #stephenking17 #recentlyread

Suzze I forgot all about The Colorado Kid. I need to get that and read it. 5y
Sweettartlaura I am so jealous of people when they're reading a King book for the first time😜 5y

This is the only King book that I #DNF. It just didn't read like King and I couldn't get into it at all. #stephenking17 @Josie @Gayan

Josie I had a hard time with this one, too. I finished it, but only because it was so short. 5y

This little book packs quite a punch in the mystery department. It wasn't horrible, but I didn't find that it was great, either. It would be a great book for a readathon, it only took me about two hours to read. Any fan of Stephen King knows that his stories can end with a resolution or they can just end. This one is kind of in the middle. Didn't love it, didn't hate it. 3/5 ⭐

TheNextBook I've read this but I need it for my shelf! 5y
Josie @TheNextBook I have no clue where I got it!! I literally have owned it for about 8 years lol and from what I found out, it's only available in paperback. Which ruins our hard copy collections!! If I come across a copy, want me to grab it for you? 5y
TheNextBook Yes and I'll paypal/transfer money to you. I'm going to check two of our used book stores but if you see one then yes please grab it. 5y
Josie @TheNextBook I was planning a used bookstore trip tomorrow! I'll look and let you know ASAP if I find it! 5y

I started this tiny beaut of a book last night, and I only have about 30 pages to go. It's very Stephen King, but it's also not. I'm interested to see where the last 30 pages are going to go because it feels to me like there is a lot more going on than 30 little pages can handle. I guess we'll see! This is my first hard case crime book. It's one of those that I've owned for years and has traveled many places with me, but has never been read.

Poetryfreak38 This book goes with the SyFy series Haven. It's why I read it and liked the small connection between the two. 5y
Bookladylinda I listened to the audio of this one in 2011 - sorry to say I don't remember it but looked at my review I rated it 4 🌟 and felt it was classic King. Maybe it's time for a reread??? 🤔🤔🤔🤔 5y
Pruzy I highly recommend Stephen King's other hard case crime novel: 5y

ElizaTodd Ooooh, I love that campy cover! 5y
Smashlee I tried to start Joyland and couldn't get into it. This is typical for me and some King stories though. It's usually several chapters in before I go AHA! 5y
Josie @Poetryfreak38 I'm going to have to check that out! I've heard of Haven but haven't watched it 5y
Josie @Bookladylinda maybe!! It's so quick, only 180 pages! I finished already! 5y
Poetryfreak38 I loved the first 4 seasons of Haven. 5y
Josie @Smashlee it was hard for me to get into this one! But I wanted a quick read and once I finished, I enjoyed it! I'll post a review in a bit :) 5y
Josie @ElizaTodd isn't it gorgeous? It's the reason I never donated the book. I'm pretty sure it's moved with me at least 4 times. I loved the cover so much that I swore I would read it one day lol 5y
Gayan I was just coming here to ask if you had read Joyland because I loved it. I think i gave it to @Smashlee 5y
