'Salem's Lot
'Salem's Lot | Stephen King
Stephen King’s second novel, the classic vampire bestseller ’SALEM’S LOT, tells the story of evil in small-town America. For the first time in a major trade edition, this terrifying novel is accompanied by previously unpublished material from King’s archive, two short stories, and eerie photographs that bring King’s fictional darkness and evil to vivid life. When Stephen King’s classic thriller’SALEM’S LOT hit the stands in 1975, it thrilled and terrified millions of readers with tales of demonic evil in small-town America. Now, thirty years later and still scaring readers witless, ’SALEM’S LOT reemerges in a brilliant new edition, complete with photographs, fifty pages of deleted and alternate scenes, and two short stories related to the events of the novel. While the original edition of ’SALEM’S LOT will forever be a premier horror classic, ’SALEM’S LOT: ILLUSTRATED EDITION, with the inclusion of material from King’s archive, is destined to become a classic in its own right and a must-have for all Stephen King fans. In this edition, the hair-raising story of Jerusalem’s Lot, a small town in Maine whose inhabitants succumb to the evil allure of a new resident, is told as the author envisioned it, complete with fifty pages of alternate and deleted scenes. With a new introduction by the author, two short stories related to the events and residents of Jerusalem’s Lot, the lavishly creepy photographs of Jerry Uelsmann, and a stunning new page design, this edition brings the story to life in words and pictures as never before. No library will be complete without this ideal collector’s item for any King aficionado, the definitive illustrated edition of the great ’SALEM’S LOT.

As the author of a vampire hunter series, I‘ve felt a little guilty for not reading ‘Salem‘s Lot sooner. It‘s a slow wind up, but once things go to crap, it‘s fast. I love how King makes Barlow a worthy antagonist. Even when the protagonists make seemingly clever moves, he‘s a step ahead, and it made sense he would be with his experience. That makes the ending a bit of a letdown, for me, but it‘s still a brilliant vampire novel. #vampires

Cathythoughts Oh Mr King ! It‘s always so lovely to see you 4d

What can I say??? If your local library has the audio version... borrow it and listen to the book. It‘s more fun and scary to listen than reading the physical book. #horror

BillBlume I mostly listened to this during morning walks with the dog and while driving. I only once made the mistake of playing it late at night while home during the scene when Matt leaves Susan downstairs to check his guest bedroom. Big mistake. Scared the crap outta me. 4d
JaneJane85 @BillBlume Oh yes! I remember that part. At a house where only the two of them and then Matt heard some noise at the second level. That‘s really scary. I did play the book with my speaker during the night. Of cos I lower down the volume and yet it creeps the hell out of me. The narrator did a fantastic job! 4d
JaneJane85 @BillBlume And... I don‘t scare easily... 4d

Reusing a pic from Insta, hope that isn‘t blasphemy! There have been multiple discussion lately in some book groups I‘m in about the old ‘hardcover vs paperback‘ debate. I‘m a collector, I love alternate covers, I‘ve got special editions, and signed books, but I love stocking up on cheap paperbacks to huck in my purse and drag around with me everywhere. What about you guys? Hardcover vs paperback? Or e-reader all the way?

RaimeyGallant I recycle pics too. :) And welcome to Litsy! #LitsyWelcomeWagon Some of us put together Litsy tips to help new Littens navigate the site. It's the link in my bio on my page in case you need it. Or if you prefer how-to videos, @chelleo put some together at the link in her bio. @LitsyWelcomeWagon

WhatWouldJaneDo I do all sorts of formats! I love my e-reader since it's so easy to toss in my purse (and it solves the problem of finishing a book while you're out somewhere and not having another) but I can't resist book stores. I pick up signed copies at special events and live by a giant Half Price Books so I get whatever form I find. For Stephen King I especially love getting older paperbacks that remind me of the editions I first read growing up. 1mo

I finished! I liked Dracul better though. With that said, I loved the way King fleshed out (pardon the pun) 😆 his characters. He had me really rooting for and caring about Ben and Mark.
Good book. 👍

DaveNeufeld My mother told me she read it when I was a baby and stopped walking at night afterward (we lived in the country). I read it little while back and didn‘t think it was scary at all. Sometimes I think she misremembered and it was actually Pet Sematary that scared her 🤔 3mo
rretzler I read it when it first came out in paperback, so I was 12. Between it and Dracula (which I read at age 9), I now have a phobia of vampires 🧛🏻‍♀️ 🤣. Pet Sematary also scared me, but the rest of King that I read in my teen and pre-teen years really didn‘t faze me. 3mo
Rachbb3 @rretzler I thought Dracula was creepy as well. With all the fluffy vampire stories out there, it's going to be fun to read an actual scary one. 😀 3mo
JacqMac It‘s one of the few King‘s that I found creepy. I was always looking behind me while I read it. But it‘s also one of my favourites. I like creepy. 3mo

#EpicKaTet I find it interesting that we have another lead female character called Susan is this significant in the King multiverse??

Andrew65 That is interesting, I wonder... 6mo
MinDea I have read that characters carry throughout his universe. Sometimes they have the same name and are the same person. Other times they have the same name but are different but yet the same. I think he is very thoughtful about his universe and his characters name(typically)like. Im not familiar with Salem's lot but possibly significant. 🤷🏽‍♀️ @TrishB do you know? 6mo
TrishB They are quite similar characters, but I don‘t remember King implying they were the same one (I could be wrong - so many books!) but he does like cross overs! 6mo

Oh so good. Started it for Halloween but just finished it now.
King isnt perfect, but damn that dude can write. Especially when it comes to mood and suspense.
A perfect Halloween read that I had to finish on a bright sunshine day.

LittleBug Love the colours on that blanket!! 7mo
KTOHARA King certainly can write. I wish he'd do more serious writing like his novellas and short stories. Shawshank was phenomenal. Then there was a story about a boy who had a Nazi neighbor Apt Pupil. Chilling story. I read it a long time ago but never have forgotten it. I mean, I've bought books that I've already read unknowingly! Some don't stay with me. 7mo

This may be an unpopular opinion- or maybe it‘s just because I had such high hopes for my #Halloween audiobook but this vampire novel just didn‘t really ever frighten me... I liked a lot of it but ultimately I was looking to be frightened of vampires once again... and while this knocks off some sparkle from our modern glampires - it never terrified me the way I wanted! Good for #AudioColoring though!

It was interesting reading one of King‘s earliest novels and seeing that he had already developed his signature style. He‘s not only a great horror writer, but a great writer...period. ‘Salem‘s Lot is a slow burn with an unsatisfying, anti-climatic, rushed ending. But it‘s fun witnessing the town gradually succumb to its inevitable demise as Ben Mears and his comrades try to figure out what the hell is going on.

BooksForEmpathy Ahhhh. I have never read Stephen King!! Where should I even start???? 8mo
mauveandrosysky @BooksForEmpathy Pet Sematary is my absolute favorite! Like, there‘s actually a lot of depth to it re: the horror of dealing with the reality that everyone we love will die...and how do we possibly cope with this? The Shining is definitely a classic place to start though (and it‘s different enough from the movie that it‘s not too redundant). His non-horror is also really good, like The Green Mile. 8mo
