'Salem's Lot
'Salem's Lot | Stephen King
Stephen Kings second novel, the classic vampire bestseller SALEMS LOT, tells the story of evil in small-town America. For the first time in a major trade edition, this terrifying novel is accompanied by previously unpublished material from Kings archive, two short stories, and eerie photographs that bring Kings fictional darkness and evil to vivid life. When Stephen Kings classic thrillerSALEMS LOT hit the stands in 1975, it thrilled and terrified millions of readers with tales of demonic evil in small-town America. Now, thirty years later and still scaring readers witless, SALEMS LOT reemerges in a brilliant new edition, complete with photographs, fifty pages of deleted and alternate scenes, and two short stories related to the events of the novel. While the original edition of SALEMS LOT will forever be a premier horror classic, SALEMS LOT: ILLUSTRATED EDITION, with the inclusion of material from Kings archive, is destined to become a classic in its own right and a must-have for all Stephen King fans. In this edition, the hair-raising story of Jerusalems Lot, a small town in Maine whose inhabitants succumb to the evil allure of a new resident, is told as the author envisioned it, complete with fifty pages of alternate and deleted scenes. With a new introduction by the author, two short stories related to the events and residents of Jerusalems Lot, the lavishly creepy photographs of Jerry Uelsmann, and a stunning new page design, this edition brings the story to life in words and pictures as never before. No library will be complete without this ideal collectors item for any King aficionado, the definitive illustrated edition of the great SALEMS LOT.

Enjoyed breakfast for lunch (eggs, hash browns, and a chocolate chip pancake) at the counter of my favorite cafe while reading my book before heading to my infusion treatment for my Crohn‘s. Had a nice conversation with a couple waitresses about what books we were reading, too. Perfect way to start a weekend.

This is a slow burner, laced with dread; as is most of King‘s work. King is the only author who makes me feel genuine fear. He has an uncanny ability to write small towns and lifelike characters, and this is evidently displayed in ‘salems lot.

My first foray into vampires, and these are definitely not the ‘sparkly‘ kind. Another solid book from the master himself!

King‘s classic tale of vampires infiltrating small town America is just as creepy as I remember. This is slow burn horror at its finest, and when things start to ramp up, you‘re stuck on the rollercoaster until it‘s time to get off. King creates just as many lovable characters as evil ones, and The Lot‘s ragtag band of heroes is no exception. A remarkable second novel with impact. I won‘t be looking out my bedroom window at night anytime soon. 4⭐️

#Pop23 Oops! I don‘t have much to choose from for published books in my birth year. A thoroughly enjoyable read. I can't say I found it all that scary, but I was riveted none the less. 🧛

TieDyeDude I just read this in October. Agreed; very creepy, but not particularly scary. I guess with the oversaturation of vampires in pop culture in the 2000s, the older stuff loses some of its impact. 5mo

The set of Stephen King from my Mom, who has certainly read all of these at least once and is excited that I‘ve hit my King-reading phase. The tagged will probably be the first I read.

A chronic illness memoir from my sister. We both have Crohn‘s (I‘ve been diagnosed since 2013; she was just diagnosed this summer). The author also has Crohn‘s, so this is now on both our TBRs.

A very good King novel. I was expecting gruesome horror and this was more psychological; not a lot of physical action, even at the end. And, having read The Dark Tower first, I was surprised Father Callahan didn't have a bigger presence. One of my favorite things about King, though, is that you really get to know all his characters, and you care about the town before the nightmare begins.

TheNeverendingTBR He's a great character. Lone vampire slayer! His showdown at the Dixie Pig was legendary! 7mo

I wasn't on Litsy much yesterday so I somehow missed the posts celebrating King's 75th birthday started by @reggie I have posted extensively about King previously: about how I read IT during a week off from work 5 years ago & the scope & ambition completely changed my idea of what a horror novel could be; I have also talked of my abiding love for the genre bending series & the memorable characters in the Dark Tower; a few times I have mentioned

vivastory King carrying on the epistolary tradition of Frankenstein & Dracula in works like Carrie & The Outsider. Since I was a kid I have always loved King via the made for tv adaptations of works like Sometimes They Come Back & The Stand, but it is only in the past few years that I have become a devoted reader of his work. All of my life I have been a constant reader & am now also a Constant Reader. (pic image mural outside of Verbatim Books in CA whose 8mo

Ok. I'm excited now.
I was just mentioning yesterday that I wanted to watch the original 'Salem's Lot and then complained to hubs that I couldn't find it anywhere. He just came home with a present! Our Walmart has next to nothing for movies do what are the odds?? It's too late tonight but I'm diving in by the weekend.
Thinking of turning my #ReadKing into a #ReadAndWatchKing experience now. There are SO many adaptations it might be a good time.

FantasyChick @Leftcoastzen Exactly! I've never stopped collecting them and always check the bins whenever I'm in the store. 2022 Reread #2 - A while ago, I decided to start reading King in order of publication. I considered skipping books already read, but after rereading Salem‘s Lot, I‘m not. I originally read this in 2009, which was long enough for me to forget some details. I thoroughly enjoyed this all over again. I forgot how much I loved and loathed some of the characters. Ugh, Mrs. Norton. Definitely worth 18 hours on audio. #Booked2022 #adaptedforthesmallscreen

To keep it short for you, Cycle of the Werewolf (Silver Bullet movie) came out in the 80s and might be a good choice. He also had several novellas in the 80s like The Body and Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption. I haven‘t read those two yet. Another novel I love is Misery. (edited) 1y

Reggie This is very cool and I love that you‘re keeping it loose. I would probably say I was gonna do it and read like four of his books and call it a day. @Cinfhen read Firestarter. 'Salem's Lot | Stephen King

I have not been active in Litsy for some time. I‘m going to try to remedy that. I signed up for two buddy reads four-ish years ago. I bought a lot of hardcover and softcover books by Stephen King for the #losersclub. I also signed up for the Terry Pratchett read along. I‘m not sure why, but I quickly lost interest in the Pratchett books. Around the same time, we had a couple of deaths in the family, both of my parents passed. Continued…

CatLass007 2) I never started reading any of the King books, so it was easy to know where to start. Last month, I read CARRIE, the first book on the list. I was unimpressed, although I remembered liking it in junior high. But that was over 40 years ago. I am now reading ‘SALEM‘s LOT, which I believe I read in high school. I remember enjoying it considerably more than the first book, and it was the same case this time. (Continued) (edited) 1y
CatLass007 1) When when each of my parents passed, y‘all were extremely supportive and I am grateful. You never get over that kind of grief, but it does become manageable over time. After mom‘s passing, it became necessary to prepare our house to sell. That meant packing up oodles of boxes, including all those Stephen King books I had. Towards the end of 2021, I decided I would listen to everything in audiobook format because that‘s all I read now. (Cont.) (edited) 1y
CatLass007 3) I have a question. The list for the #LosersClub ends with THE OUTSIDER. Is there another list that I just can‘t find for the books he‘s written since that list was compiled. I‘m trying to work out a personal schedule for myself. Thanks for any help you can give. 1y

“Salems Lot” by Steven King is about a man named Ben Mears who has returned to his hometown Jerusalems Lot to explore the history of the Marsten house. A old large house that is the subject of story‘s that may or may not be true and will help him with inspiration for his new book. But when two young boys travel into the woods and only one returns alive Mears begins to understand that something evil is at work.

Thicdaddy I would recommend this book to a specific audience who enjoys horror story‘s that is not scared easily as it is a very unnerving story so far. 1y
Thicdaddy My first theme present in the story is Good vs Evil. The vampires in the story are evil, their list of blood is enough to prove my point right there. However, sometimes the vampires seem like they are a metaphor for other evil things such as: sex perverts like Hubie Marsten or other small town evil such as adultery, child beating, greed etc. 1y
Thicdaddy The second theme is Mortality. Just about everybody dies in Salems lot. Good guys, bad guys and people in the middle, They all get taken out by murder, suicide, heart attacks etc. Some people die once and stay dead other folks come back to life and some die again. In the book death can be looked at as terrifying and also beautiful as the novel shows that if you could just get to death you wouldn‘t need to be afraid of it. 1y
Thicdaddy I‘ve read this book before and my rating of it would be 9.6 out of 10 the only thing I could take away from it would be the pacing at times it got a little drug out but the characters, story and themes all are basically perfect. 1y
MissYaremcio Nicely done Austin! Cute pupper! 5.5/6 - I don't think I would enjoy this book myself... right? 1y

Look what came through my letterbox today 💕

Thanks for alerting me to the availability of another literary miscellany that I needed in my life @vivastory - it looks amazing 😊

Also looking forward to another Stephen King... he's one of the most readable authors I've come across.

vivastory Wonderful! The mental floss book is such a delight! Hope you enjoy both of them 📚📚 2y
RaeLovesToRead @vivastory On an initial flick through I'm loving the mental floss book! And as for Salem's Lot.. what a cover! 2y

MaleficentBookDragon When I was a kid the Salem‘s Lot movie terrified me. It was the kid floating outside the window that did it. I have not read the book yet. 2y
Endowarrior21 @MaleficentBookDragon I've never seen the movie but love the book. 2y

Thanks for the tag @Ast_Arslan 🙋‍♂️

1️⃣ Not particularly but I did read 'salems Lot last year around Halloween time, another one I think is a cool read for that time of year is 'Something Wicked This Way Comes' by Ray Bradbury 🖤

2️⃣ I certainly hope so because we've got lots of candy, cakes and little Halloween baggies for it! 🍭🍬🍪

I lost my post 😂 so here is the short and sweet: not a great week for #screamathlon2021 but I saw my kids ❤️ @StayCurious #teamhendrix

Week 2: 250
Total Points: 700

The King delivered (as usual) ready to watch the series.

StayCurious Sounds like a great week to me! Great job 2y
