'Salem's Lot
'Salem's Lot | Stephen King
Stephen Kings second novel, the classic vampire bestseller SALEMS LOT, tells the story of evil in small-town America. For the first time in a major trade edition, this terrifying novel is accompanied by previously unpublished material from Kings archive, two short stories, and eerie photographs that bring Kings fictional darkness and evil to vivid life. When Stephen Kings classic thrillerSALEMS LOT hit the stands in 1975, it thrilled and terrified millions of readers with tales of demonic evil in small-town America. Now, thirty years later and still scaring readers witless, SALEMS LOT reemerges in a brilliant new edition, complete with photographs, fifty pages of deleted and alternate scenes, and two short stories related to the events of the novel. While the original edition of SALEMS LOT will forever be a premier horror classic, SALEMS LOT: ILLUSTRATED EDITION, with the inclusion of material from Kings archive, is destined to become a classic in its own right and a must-have for all Stephen King fans. In this edition, the hair-raising story of Jerusalems Lot, a small town in Maine whose inhabitants succumb to the evil allure of a new resident, is told as the author envisioned it, complete with fifty pages of alternate and deleted scenes. With a new introduction by the author, two short stories related to the events and residents of Jerusalems Lot, the lavishly creepy photographs of Jerry Uelsmann, and a stunning new page design, this edition brings the story to life in words and pictures as never before. No library will be complete without this ideal collectors item for any King aficionado, the definitive illustrated edition of the great SALEMS LOT.

I mostly enjoyed this. Like much of Stephen King's books there was some weirdness in the depiction of women. Parts of it got quite spooky, but it's not my favourite of his books.

So glad I read the intro by King, I didn‘t know what to expect, but I‘m glad I went in knowing his intention was ‘what if Dracula came to Maine instead of England?‘ Cause yeah, that sums it up, and he did a perfect job answering that!

Not sure how I feel about the casting/directing choice for the upcoming adaptation of one of my favorite King novels. I love IT, especially chapter 2, but I don't think it's so much the writing that makes those movies special as it is the performances & Andy Muschietti's direction.

KathyWheeler I‘m not sure how I feel about another version of this. I‘ve never seen Lewis Pullman in anything, so I looked him up. He definitely resembles his father. 3mo
vivastory @KathyWheeler He really does. I'm eager for an adaptation, but this isn't necessarily the one that I want. I'm not writing it off, but I am a little disappointed in the choices so far. I am really looking forward to the new adaptation of Firestarter & really intrigued by Brian Fuller's remake of Christine 3mo
Reggie This is my favorite of his and as much as I should want an adaptation, I don‘t. 3mo
vivastory @Reggie Completely understand. Shortly after posting this I started watching the prequel Chapelwaite & turned it off about 5 minutes later. I just don't have the tolerance for disappointment anymore. 3mo

A friend insisted to me yesterday that Stephen King was both “better than” (!!!) & “the modern-day equivalent of” Ray Bradbury. Admittedly, I‘ve never read any Stephen King but everything inside of me rebelled at the notion.

He recommended Salem‘s Lot (I‘m sure because he‘s a high school friend & I was utterly obsessed with Buffy as a teen) but I have some questions:

1) He‘s wrong, right? 😅
2) Which King would you recommend that I start with?

Clare-Dragonfly Well… I haven‘t liked any of the King I‘ve read (except On Writing) so I can‘t make a recommendation, but I definitely do not see the resemblance! For one thing, Bradbury knew how to write short. 4mo
TrishB I love the fact that Kings work is long! He has written many fantastic short story collections too. What sort of reads do you generally like as he has written a bit of everything. If you don‘t like vampire horror you don‘t like Salem‘s Lot. 4mo
monalyisha @Clare-Dragonfly I didn‘t really ask him to belabor the point. I mostly just yelled. 😅 But I‘m guessing it has something to do with the “boys coming of age” trope, marked with fantastical elements. 4mo
See All 14 Comments
monalyisha @TrishB I can do vampire horror. It‘s more about the writing for me than it is about plot. Sentence by sentence, I want to be wowed. Also, I mostly associate King with clowns & child orgies? 😆 I‘m SURE there‘s more to it than that. But those are the details that have stuck. 4mo
ChaoticMissAdventures So..I have read a few King books. And I am just going to have to say absolutely not 😆. Bradbury's skill at both writing and storytelling are miles beyond King. Not that King isn't good, just that he is no Bradbury. Also if you are one who has issues with racism Kings early work is problematic. I tried to read The Stand a few times but the excessive used of N word turned me off. 4mo
monalyisha @ChaoticMissAdventures That‘s what I said! I was like, “There‘s no WAY he writes as lyrically as Bradbury. I refuse.” 4mo
ChaoticMissAdventures @monalyisha I am so curious what you pick up and think about him! I think he is fine and there are some of his stories especially the short ones that really messed my mind up with their twisted humans. 4mo
BookwormM I loved the Dark Tower series but be warned book 1 is the worst they get better and are different from the first one 4mo
Prairiegirl_reading “I mostly just yelled” 🤣🤣🤣 I‘ve only read Fahrenheit 451 but King is definitely not lyrical. Lol! However I really liked the short story collection Different Seasons and was very oddly compelled by Gerald‘s game. I couldn‘t believe that I was couldn‘t put down a book about a woman handcuffed to a bed. Compelling definitely, lyrical no. (edited) 4mo
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm I‘m on the flip side of this as I‘ve not yet read Bradbury but am a pretty loyal King fan. I obviously can‘t put my two cents in on which is better. 😅 If you‘re actually wanting to read King to sample it, I‘d try a smaller standalone like Eyes of the Dragon. It‘s different from his other works as it‘s less horror and more epic fantasy. It ties in (as most of his works do) to the Dark Tower books but is not directly part of the series. 4mo
Ruthiella I‘ve read both and they aren‘t really comparable, IMO. I‘m not a huge fan of either, but Bradbury is definitely more adventurous in his often poetic writing style. King knows how to tell an epic, engrossing story with lots of moving pieces. 4mo
Mary_K_Tilghman I read 11-22-63 before I realized it was THAT Stephen King. Loved it. It‘s historical fantasy though and not horror. Love fantasy so that makes sense. 4mo
monalyisha @Mary_K_Tilghman That one‘s just so big! 🙈😅 I think I‘d have to already be a fan to make that kind of commitment. 4mo
Mary_K_Tilghman I read it on KIndle. Had no idea how big it was! Lol! 4mo

I had no idea King wrote a vampire story. It was in 75 and I‘m curious if it‘s responsible for the modern day vamp resurgence we have now. It reads like a classic (with an interesting twist) but in 1975 it would have been original and terrifying.

in the prologe King stated he wanted to write a different kind of vampire novel and I expected that, but in the end it is another “regular” vampire novel - at least for me. For my taste the “heros” ended up finding out what was going on too early. The really interesting part for me started with the epistolary (last) chapter. I keep on wondering why he did not write the whole novel like that? 🤔🤔🤔

💛💛💛💛 I love Stephen King. It did start a bit slow for the first 200 pages, but was atmospheric and honestly chilling in parts. I did get to the stage where I felt it got a bit repetitive (like how many times can a vampire kill someone) but overall a classic Stephen King and a good read.

An epistolary-style short story, one of two, found at the end of the newer editions of Salem‘s Lot. This was darker and a little less interesting to me than One For the Road. It takes place long before the events of Salem‘s Lot on and around the same piece of land. It‘s definitely creepy, with the abandoned church and the occult symbolism on the inside, and the main character‘s descent into madness.

Book 4️⃣ of the #12booksof2020

This is the most fun I‘ve had with a Stephen King novel in quite a long time. This is a pretty straightforward vampire story that‘s super creepy and super exciting. Some of the character work is not QUITE as strong as I know King is capable of but his characters on a bad day are still head and shoulders above what a lot of authors can do at their best. Reignited my appetite for King!

Ast_Arslan @Kenyazero thank you! My friend took this for me and I took one with Usagi and Misaki (Junjou Romantica... idk if you know Nakamura's works) for her ❤ it's a beautiful mug and a nice memorie too ❤ 12mo

Centique That is SCARY 😳😳 Im glad you‘re safe now my friend! I slept in a haunted house once - well at least the uni students flatting there said it was haunted. And there was this tiny dark staircase that went up to a room in the attic that used to be the servants room back in the 19th century. I should say I spent a night ‘not sleeping‘ in a haunted house 😂 12mo

Reggie @Centique lol, yeah, I don‘t think I‘d sleep a wink there either. 20s Reggie would have asked to sleep in the attic. Reggie-now probably would sleep in his car once they said it was haunted. 12mo

Pickpick

God I love Stephen King! His books are so fun to read and flow so well. He is also not afraid to kill off some characters he‘s spent time building and making us love, which I also appreciate. This isn‘t my favorite King novel but it‘s definitely up there! 🌟🌟🌟🌟

TheNeverendingTBR His best horror novel I'd say 🧛‍♂️ 12mo
candc320 @TheNeverendingTBR my favorite is It, followed by The Shining and Doctor Sleep. But this is definitely in my top 5! 12mo
