#Pop23 Oops! I don‘t have much to choose from for published books in my birth year. I was super excited to see Salem‘s Lot but for some reason in my head I was thinking The Stand, which I started yesterday and I‘m hooked on! So I‘ll finish that as my longest book on my TBR and read Salem‘s Lot this year as well. Going old school King this year!

ItsAngel The Stand is one of my all time favorites! Enjoy! 😉 2w

A thoroughly enjoyable read. I can't say I found it all that scary, but I was riveted none the less. 🧛

TieDyeDude I just read this in October. Agreed; very creepy, but not particularly scary. I guess with the oversaturation of vampires in pop culture in the 2000s, the older stuff loses some of its impact. 2w

And, of course, I got books for gifts! 🎁 📚 #bookhaul

The set of Stephen King from my Mom, who has certainly read all of these at least once and is excited that I‘ve hit my King-reading phase. The tagged will probably be the first I read.

A chronic illness memoir from my sister. We both have Crohn‘s (I‘ve been diagnosed since 2013; she was just diagnosed this summer). The author also has Crohn‘s, so this is now on both our TBRs.

A very good King novel. I was expecting gruesome horror and this was more psychological; not a lot of physical action, even at the end. And, having read The Dark Tower first, I was surprised Father Callahan didn't have a bigger presence. One of my favorite things about King, though, is that you really get to know all his characters, and you care about the town before the nightmare begins.

TheNeverendingTBR He's a great character. Lone vampire slayer! His showdown at the Dixie Pig was legendary! 3mo

Returning to Stephen King today, as this is one of the scariest vampire stories I‘ve read (maybe because I read it as a kid - oh, the 80s/90s). Little Danny Glick as a child vampire haunted me for years. #scarathlondailyprompts #vampire #teamslaughter

An incredible read. This remains one of my favorite stories about vampires. The pacing is economical, the "stakes" feel real, and the characters are largely compelling - especially in the case of Mark Petrie. There's a reason I keep coming back to Salem's Lot. 5/5. #ReadKing

I wasn't on Litsy much yesterday so I somehow missed the posts celebrating King's 75th birthday started by @reggie I have posted extensively about King previously: about how I read IT during a week off from work 5 years ago & the scope & ambition completely changed my idea of what a horror novel could be; I have also talked of my abiding love for the genre bending series & the memorable characters in the Dark Tower; a few times I have mentioned

vivastory King carrying on the epistolary tradition of Frankenstein & Dracula in works like Carrie & The Outsider. Since I was a kid I have always loved King via the made for tv adaptations of works like Sometimes They Come Back & The Stand, but it is only in the past few years that I have become a devoted reader of his work. All of my life I have been a constant reader & am now also a Constant Reader. (pic image mural outside of Verbatim Books in CA whose 4mo

Ok. I'm excited now.
I was just mentioning yesterday that I wanted to watch the original 'Salem's Lot and then complained to hubs that I couldn't find it anywhere. He just came home with a present! Our Walmart has next to nothing for movies do what are the odds?? It's too late tonight but I'm diving in by the weekend.
Thinking of turning my #ReadKing into a #ReadAndWatchKing experience now. There are SO many adaptations it might be a good time.

Leftcoastzen That‘s why people collect DVDs & even VHS . I keep hearing people say everything is streaming, but not so . So many reasons, rights issues, etc. Some are quite valuable because they are hard to get. 9mo
FantasyChick @Leftcoastzen Exactly! I've never stopped collecting them and always check the bins whenever I'm in the store. I'm of the mind set that streaming services are getting way to high on themselves even though you can almost never find what you really want. My DVD player is almost 20 years old and works like the day it came from the box. If it's not broke....😊 9mo

I will likely never wax rhapsodic about Stephen King‘s sentences or comment on his lyricism, but damn if he isn‘t one of the best storytellers out there. Here, he builds suspense beautifully, shows us just enough, and isn‘t afraid to take down major characters. And he‘s so good at creating deplorable characters! This one was fun.

2022 Reread #2 - A while ago, I decided to start reading King in order of publication. I considered skipping books already read, but after rereading Salem‘s Lot, I‘m not. I originally read this in 2009, which was long enough for me to forget some details. I thoroughly enjoyed this all over again. I forgot how much I loved and loathed some of the characters. Ugh, Mrs. Norton. Definitely worth 18 hours on audio. #Booked2022 #adaptedforthesmallscreen

Bookzombie Short goal: Let‘s see if I can complete everything published in the 1970s in 2022. I read all the short stories checked since I started this “project.” 12mo
Cinfhen Cool challenge!! Which of King‘s novels is set in the 80‘s?? I‘d like to read one for the #pop22 prompt / I haven‘t read much King and I don‘t like horror but I‘m willing to try something horror lite 12mo

Bookzombie @cinfhen I‘m going to tag @Reggie and @vivastory because I know they have read some that I haven‘t yet. To keep it short for you, Cycle of the Werewolf (Silver Bullet movie) came out in the 80s and might be a good choice. He also had several novellas in the 80s like The Body and Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption. I haven‘t read those two yet. Another novel I love is Misery. (edited) 12mo
Bookzombie @Cinfhen IT was out in the 80s but I don‘t imagine you would like it. Also, it‘s a big one. 😀 12mo
Cinfhen Prompt is set in the 80‘s and I really hope Shawshank fits the bill!! I‘ve been meaning to read that book forever!! 12mo
Cinfhen Thanks for all the suggestions 😘 and for tagging Scott & @reggie 12mo
Cinfhen Yeah/ IT is not the one 🤡 12mo
Bookzombie @Cinfhen I checked the plot on Shawshank and it‘s not set in the 80s. ☹️ Sorry. 12mo
Cinfhen Darn, I‘ll probably read it anyway!! 12mo
Reggie This is very cool and I love that you‘re keeping it loose. I would probably say I was gonna do it and read like four of his books and call it a day. @Cinfhen read Firestarter. It was published in 1980, and definitely feels like an 80‘s kind of book. I read it during the pandemic and it was really good. 12mo
Cinfhen Thanks @Reggie ☺️ 12mo

'Salem's Lot | Stephen King

I have not been active in Litsy for some time. I‘m going to try to remedy that. I signed up for two buddy reads four-ish years ago. I bought a lot of hardcover and softcover books by Stephen King for the #losersclub. I also signed up for the Terry Pratchett read along. I‘m not sure why, but I quickly lost interest in the Pratchett books. Around the same time, we had a couple of deaths in the family, both of my parents passed. Continued…

CatLass007 2) I never started reading any of the King books, so it was easy to know where to start. Last month, I read CARRIE, the first book on the list. I was unimpressed, although I remembered liking it in junior high. But that was over 40 years ago. I am now reading ‘SALEM‘s LOT, which I believe I read in high school. I remember enjoying it considerably more than the first book, and it was the same case this time. (Continued) (edited) 12mo
CatLass007 1) When when each of my parents passed, y‘all were extremely supportive and I am grateful. You never get over that kind of grief, but it does become manageable over time. After mom‘s passing, it became necessary to prepare our house to sell. That meant packing up oodles of boxes, including all those Stephen King books I had. Towards the end of 2021, I decided I would listen to everything in audiobook format because that‘s all I read now. (Cont.) (edited) 12mo
CatLass007 3) I have a question. The list for the #LosersClub ends with THE OUTSIDER. Is there another list that I just can‘t find for the books he‘s written since that list was compiled. I‘m trying to work out a personal schedule for myself. Thanks for any help you can give. 12mo

“Salems Lot” by Steven King is about a man named Ben Mears who has returned to his hometown Jerusalems Lot to explore the history of the Marsten house. A old large house that is the subject of story‘s that may or may not be true and will help him with inspiration for his new book. But when two young boys travel into the woods and only one returns alive Mears begins to understand that something evil is at work.

Thicdaddy I would recommend this book to a specific audience who enjoys horror story‘s that is not scared easily as it is a very unnerving story so far. 14mo
Thicdaddy My first theme present in the story is Good vs Evil. The vampires in the story are evil, their list of blood is enough to prove my point right there. However, sometimes the vampires seem like they are a metaphor for other evil things such as: sex perverts like Hubie Marsten or other small town evil such as adultery, child beating, greed etc. 14mo
Thicdaddy The second theme is Mortality. Just about everybody dies in Salems lot. Good guys, bad guys and people in the middle, They all get taken out by murder, suicide, heart attacks etc. Some people die once and stay dead other folks come back to life and some die again. In the book death can be looked at as terrifying and also beautiful as the novel shows that if you could just get to death you wouldn‘t need to be afraid of it. 14mo
Thicdaddy I‘ve read this book before and my rating of it would be 9.6 out of 10 the only thing I could take away from it would be the pacing at times it got a little drug out but the characters, story and themes all are basically perfect. 14mo
MissYaremcio Nicely done Austin! Cute pupper! 5.5/6 - I don't think I would enjoy this book myself... right? 14mo

Clwojick Ahhhhhhhhh! This is such a good stack! There are so many books in this stack that I want to read! 😍😍😍 My favourite was definitely Middlegame! 1y
rjsthumbelina @Clwojick I have a tendency to collect books that I want to read "eventually." That leads to me having a TON of books in most categories, all that I want to get to! Seanan McGuire is one of my favorite authors, so I definitely hope I can fit Middlegame in this month. I love her urban fantasy/mystery series, October Date. Hoping to get a few of those in this month, too! 1y

Clwojick I loved the Wayward Children series! 1y
BookwormAHN The Book of Accidents, 56 Days, The Guest List and Into The Drowning Deep were really good 👻 1y
rjsthumbelina @TheKidUpstairs I loved Stuart Turton's other book, so I'm excited to get to his new one. And Rebecca is on my soft list of "books I absolutely have to get to this year" 1y
rjsthumbelina @BookwormAHN glad to hear good feedback for Chuck Wendig - I know he can be hit or miss for people. I'm really into the idea of 56 Days. And I'm interested to see how I feel about Into the Drowning Deep, bc I absolutely love Seanan McGuire, and have never read any of her horror written under Mira Grant 1y
LeslieO I loved Into the Drowning Deep! 1y

I can‘t believe it‘s taken me so long to read this considering my undying love for all things Stephen King. I‘m only 1/3 way through and I still have no idea what‘s going on in this town (no spoilers please!)

TheNeverendingTBR One of the best horror novels ever written! 🖤 1y
nmadriga Okay finally reached the big reveal of what the monster is and now I‘m too scared to read it at night 😂 1y

Not sure how I feel about the casting/directing choice for the upcoming adaptation of one of my favorite King novels. I love IT, especially chapter 2, but I don't think it's so much the writing that makes those movies special as it is the performances & Andy Muschietti's direction.

KathyWheeler I‘m not sure how I feel about another version of this. I‘ve never seen Lewis Pullman in anything, so I looked him up. He definitely resembles his father. 1y
vivastory @KathyWheeler He really does. I'm eager for an adaptation, but this isn't necessarily the one that I want. I'm not writing it off, but I am a little disappointed in the choices so far. I am really looking forward to the new adaptation of Firestarter & really intrigued by Brian Fuller's remake of Christine 1y
Reggie This is my favorite of his and as much as I should want an adaptation, I don‘t. 1y
vivastory @Reggie Completely understand. Shortly after posting this I started watching the prequel Chapelwaite & turned it off about 5 minutes later. I just don't have the tolerance for disappointment anymore. 1y

'Salem's Lot | Stephen King

A friend insisted to me yesterday that Stephen King was both “better than” (!!!) & “the modern-day equivalent of” Ray Bradbury. Admittedly, I‘ve never read any Stephen King but everything inside of me rebelled at the notion.

He recommended Salem‘s Lot (I‘m sure because he‘s a high school friend & I was utterly obsessed with Buffy as a teen) but I have some questions:

1) He‘s wrong, right? 😅
2) Which King would you recommend that I start with?

Clare-Dragonfly Well… I haven‘t liked any of the King I‘ve read (except On Writing) so I can‘t make a recommendation, but I definitely do not see the resemblance! For one thing, Bradbury knew how to write short. 2y
TrishB I love the fact that Kings work is long! He has written many fantastic short story collections too. What sort of reads do you generally like as he has written a bit of everything. If you don‘t like vampire horror you don‘t like Salem‘s Lot. 2y
monalyisha @Clare-Dragonfly I didn‘t really ask him to belabor the point. I mostly just yelled. 😅 But I‘m guessing it has something to do with the “boys coming of age” trope, marked with fantastical elements. 2y

monalyisha @TrishB I can do vampire horror. It‘s more about the writing for me than it is about plot. Sentence by sentence, I want to be wowed. Also, I mostly associate King with clowns & child orgies? 😆 I‘m SURE there‘s more to it than that. But those are the details that have stuck. 2y
ChaoticMissAdventures So..I have read a few King books. And I am just going to have to say absolutely not 😆. Bradbury's skill at both writing and storytelling are miles beyond King. Not that King isn't good, just that he is no Bradbury. Also if you are one who has issues with racism Kings early work is problematic. I tried to read The Stand a few times but the excessive used of N word turned me off. 2y
monalyisha @ChaoticMissAdventures That‘s what I said! I was like, “There‘s no WAY he writes as lyrically as Bradbury. I refuse.” 2y
ChaoticMissAdventures @monalyisha I am so curious what you pick up and think about him! I think he is fine and there are some of his stories especially the short ones that really messed my mind up with their twisted humans. 2y
BookwormM I loved the Dark Tower series but be warned book 1 is the worst they get better and are different from the first one 2y
Prairiegirl_reading “I mostly just yelled” 🤣🤣🤣 I‘ve only read Fahrenheit 451 but King is definitely not lyrical. Lol! However I really liked the short story collection Different Seasons and was very oddly compelled by Gerald‘s game. I couldn‘t believe that I was couldn‘t put down a book about a woman handcuffed to a bed. Compelling definitely, lyrical no. (edited) 2y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm I‘m on the flip side of this as I‘ve not yet read Bradbury but am a pretty loyal King fan. I obviously can‘t put my two cents in on which is better. 😅 If you‘re actually wanting to read King to sample it, I‘d try a smaller standalone like Eyes of the Dragon. It‘s different from his other works as it‘s less horror and more epic fantasy. It ties in (as most of his works do) to the Dark Tower books but is not directly part of the series. 2y
Ruthiella I‘ve read both and they aren‘t really comparable, IMO. I‘m not a huge fan of either, but Bradbury is definitely more adventurous in his often poetic writing style. King knows how to tell an epic, engrossing story with lots of moving pieces. 2y
Mary_K_Tilghman I read 11-22-63 before I realized it was THAT Stephen King. Loved it. It‘s historical fantasy though and not horror. Love fantasy so that makes sense. 2y
monalyisha @Mary_K_Tilghman That one‘s just so big! 🙈😅 I think I‘d have to already be a fan to make that kind of commitment. 2y
Mary_K_Tilghman I read it on KIndle. Had no idea how big it was! Lol! 2y
